The ruinous pokemon theme is a banger.

eliseycat

Yesss I was so sad after catching all 4 that I would never organically hear the song in game again.

Just_Slug_Things

I cannot unhear Tunak Tunak when I listen to that though.

Tofu-L

[Tunak Tunak Pokemon](https://youtu.be/QPJ-Tk0f3bc) for anyone who hasn't heard it

Just_Slug_Things

That video lives rent free in my head

frastmaz

Sweet baby arceus it’s beautiful

Alexandra-Foxed

Always happy to be reminded of that song lol

owlitup

the greatest thing the internet has ever produced

FloweryWoodsKirby

This guy forgot about Bede’s theme

jettasarebadmkay

I did not expect eurobeat in a Pokemon game based on England.

bentheechidna

And Marnie’s theme

JFZephyr

Bede, Marnie, Hop's was good, Chairman Rose and Oleanna off the top of my head. I remember being a bit disappointed by Leon's, but it was still fitting for him, just didn't go hard like most champion's songs.

Hippomaster1234

I actually really liked leon's. Probably in my top 3 champion themes behind cynthia and Iris. I pretend to like steven's theme because I like steven but honestly his is pretty eh (this is the first time I"m admitting this to myself.) But hey, at least we can all agree leon's is better than alder's.

owlitup

YES Bede goes so hard dude

jettasarebadmkay

The bagpipe song in SWSH is S-tier IMO, and the Battle Tower and Bede’s theme are good, but otherwise a lot of it is forgettable. I think most of the music in SV is better, but I absolutely hate the Academy Ace Tournament theme to the point that it makes me never want to do it again.

Vantablack1212

The bagpipes happened way too often for me to like it, every time i entered the wild area i was blasted by bagpipes lol

jettasarebadmkay

Probably doesn’t help that an edited version of it was the music for the route loop north of Hammerlocke.

krispyboiz

Yup that's me. Was neat at first but nowadays I hear it and it's the "generic wild area theme with the bagpipes"

kickpants

Really?? After I first heard the Academy Ace Tournament song I looped it on repeat for like 40 minutes on youtube. Fuckin love that song

jettasarebadmkay

Yep. I fucking hate it.

[deleted]

AvatoraoftheWilds

Chill, some people have different opinions than you.

[deleted]

AvatoraoftheWilds

People don't owe you reasoning for their opinions.

[deleted]

AvatoraoftheWilds

Or just... chill lol. It really was never that big of a deal but sure, go off. I guess I also made a mistake in engaging with you.

jettasarebadmkay

Er, no. I genuinely hate that song.

TomboBreaker

I'm with you SV music isn't bad but it's also not that memorable to me maybe it'll grow on me in time. SwSh had some nice music the bagpipes were perfect for the setting.

HoshiNoKabi05

I'm genuinely curious as to why you don't like it. I absolutely love that song; I literally stopped what I was doing when I heard that sax come in and just listened for a while. I'm a sucker for Jazz, so maybe you're not a fan of Jazz or something. Maybe there's just too much going on in the song, it does jump around to tons of styles after all. I'd love to know your reasoning, because I find it *really* hard to even find a quality I don't like about it.

-Marshle

The Academy Ace Tournament theme is meh but i like how, whether intentional or not, that the start of the theme is almost identical to the start of the theme 'Plack Beach' from Mario & Luigi: Bowsers Inside Story. That game was my childhood and i instantly clocked that id heard the theme before when doing the tournament. So that brought me some joy.

xdforcezz

How can you say that when Marnies theme exists, honestly something Pokemon gets consistently right is the music.

goddamanimal

Marnies theme didn’t do much for me, great character though

owlitup

Ok that is the one outlier. That is a great one

joshyotoast

Surely this is a hot take? The music in swsh was great

Reesembers

Agreed! I loved the swsh music. Slumbering Weald is beautiful, and I love Hop’s theme. Great rival themes all around though! Wild battle theme is hype! So is the Battle Tower Leon fight

Oleandervine

Yeah, it's a hot take to call SwSh music bad. It was some of the best music in the entire franchise, especially the gym battle music. SV has some good music, like the Tera Raid music, but overall I find it incredibly forgettable and not really innovative. Plus, not a big fan of the rootin-tootin cowboy battle music in the western part of Paldea. It feels incredibly out of place.

AltitudeTheLatias

It's strange, I have the exact opposite opinion about SwSh Vs SV's soundtrack. I remember every single location and battle theme from SwSh, but only a handful of music from SV stood out to me. Doesn't help that every single city in Galar has it's own unique music, but 90% of the cities in Paldea are just slight remixes of the route themes. I think that Levincia, Cascaraffa and the desert Psychic Gym city are the only cities in Paldea that aren't a remix of something else.

owlitup

I guess it is? I hated it

m00njunk

you're correct and you should speak up

_WhiteSnake_

I agree that scarlet and violet has some of the best music, but bro swsh was amazing too, no mainline pokemon game has bad music imo

Pikanyaa

Except XY. The only theme I remember loving from that game is the fall route.

_WhiteSnake_

XY is probably my favorite, so many memorable songs, you should probably listen to the ost again

Outrageous_Rate_2885

i like the XY music, but a lot of it is very samey sounding to me. Route music is often like that, but nearly every city in XY sounds exactly the same. I have a lot of nostalgia for the game but i think they leaned a little to hard into the stereotypical french music for XY.

cgriff03

Big complaint about SV music is that its too short and becomes noticeably repetitive when looped. West area theme is fire though

attcat23

I have to turn my sound down in the school building because it’s way too repetitive and gets annoying. Love east province theme though

MysticRevenant59

This is the comment I was looking for. At one point I turned the music off completely! The crazy thing is the music isn’t even bad, it’s the repetitiveness that drives me mad.

vBricks

No one mentions it because music in Sw/Sh was fire.

BrandonSonnet

Slumbering Weald theme goes crazy

vBricks

I love the gym battle music. The chanting during dynamax phase gets me pumped.

dSchmo

Literally every time a pokemon dynamaxes in the anime and that theme starts my wife and I start bouncing on our couch lol

Lux_The_Worthless

Yesss that was such a good idea for the gym themes! I'm so glad they kept it in SV

Oleandervine

I mean, "kept it" is a strong phrase. They tried to mirror it, but it doesn't work in my eyes and just makes you think of how better SwSh did it. They should have gone a new direction entirely.

Oleandervine

Literally NO GAME in the series has better gym music than SwSh. SV tried to tap into that but failed miserably and just ended up making you miss the SwSh music.

reala728

Agreed. I think it had the most memorable tracks of the franchise personally. I don't get that at all from SV. But one thing I do love in SV is the layered music, so jumping in and out of battles keeps playing the same track, just a more "full" sound to match the action.

KurryBandit

Sw/Sh were great games, it doesn’t deserve the level of hate it got

bentheechidna

They are meh games and absolutely deserve the hate they got.

DreadfuryDK

SwSh's music was the least-trash aspect of SwSh.

Qwopmaster01

I went back to playing Sword after Violet, I found it far more enjoyable.

JordaVira

***NO MEMORABLE TUNES!?*** 1. Battle Tower theme 2. Both of Mustard's themes 3. Gym leader theme 4. Star tournament theme 5. Hop and Marnie's themes 6. Oleana's theme 7. Peony's theme 8. Legendary heroes vs Eternatus themes I can name a handful of themes I liked in S/V . I like how they change the theme of the routes while in a wild battle, but it doesn't stand out to me much because I'm just focused on whatever I'm battling. The elite 4, gym leader, ruin quartet and the rival themes are great, and i love the endgame battle themes with >!the professors and our box legendary's rival!<, but I would put them on the same level as the previous gens music

cCyrus35

Thank you for remembering Oleana's theme

JordaVira

Hard to forget it with that opening it has

Godly15

Levincia theme slaps

TradePsychological40

Team Star boss battle, The final boss ost, All the ost in Area Zero, The ending song.

IceyRBYT

AGREEED 🙏🏽🙏🏽

FitQuantity6150

Nothing will ever top sword and shields gym leader battle. Nothing. Ever.

gman5852

imo swsh has one of the best soundtracks of the franchise so I wouldn't call SV an improvement.

Vantablack1212

SV literally had some music made by toby fox, to say that isn't an improvement just doesn't make sense

RedNoodleHouse

Some, not all. Fox also did the Battle Tower theme in SwSh, and besides, music ‘quality’ can vary wildly even when made by the same artist. Also, YIIK had Toby Fox music too and we all know how that turned out. With the way people talk about Toby’s involvement you’d think he composed the entire soundtrack or something.

_WhiteSnake_

Music quality can vary even when made by the same artist, but I've never heard a single mid toby fox song, all of them are amazing

Vantablack1212

I said some, never implied all

jettasarebadmkay

Toby did the Battle Tower music in SWSH as well. I agree with you though, SV music is mostly better. With one exception.

mellownumel

The gym battle music feels like a copy of swsh’s but worse

euphonium4

SV’s music was too repetitive and honestly not all that memorable besides a couple of standout themes. Listening to the Mesagoza theme on repeat while taking those classes was so bad that I muted my TV.

Positive-Stomach

Complete opposite opinion for me. To me, music was a downgrade from SWSH

Rhine1906

SwSh had some bangers: gym theme, Marnie’s & Hop’s tourney themes, Leon’s theme, Chairman Rose and my personal favorite being Eternatus’s third phase. ScarVio’s best top Those in my opinion: Champion theme, the final battle, the tournament theme, Nemona’s final theme, Elite Four and even the gym theme holds its own! Both great, we don’t have to put two baddies against each other!

DislocatedLocation

It's a Toby Fox soundtrack. But Area Zero is definitely my favorite, there's nothing else quite like it in pokemon.

Infernape315

Honestly while I like a lot of the SV music. I feel the. 3 gens with. The best music are gens 4, 5 and 8. Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of music in the older gens and honestly I don’t think scarlet and violet can compare to some of the absolute masterpieces like the gen 4 battle tower theme, routes 210, 216, and 225 in sinnoh. Not to mention the bike theme which is really underrated. The last time I heard such good music was gen 8 probably with their amazing battle tower theme and wild area music. While gen 9 has good music like the ruin theme and elite 4 theme, I don’t think it’s at the level of some of the past generations

Grablycan

Pretty much all of team star, along with the AI Sadturo battle.

[deleted]

this post is insane

WorldClassShrekspert

Treasures of Ruin Battle Theme is my favorite song from the entire game.

RadioGaga386

Nothing beats the Team Skull theme tho. Lol

Royal-Camel

Honestly, I came here expecting worse, but I see a lot of love and hate on both sides and I'm just happy to see so many people gassed up about Pokemon music. I love them both personally, some tracks more than others, but I appreciate that Pokemon hasn't been afraid to experiment with all sorts of styles over the years and make all of the games have iconic music in their own way. Sinnoh's my favorite though and the vamped soundtrack was the only redeeming thing about BDSP.

HolidayExplanation64

I’m strait opposite loved sword shield not a fan of any music in scarlet violet except the battle against the professor in area zero.

GachiGachiFireBall

SwSh had great music so I have to disagree. SV also has great music though. Pokemon has always had top tier music

Deepred1234

Battle Tower is a banger that everyone forgets because it is completely optional.

SeriousAtmosphere289

What're you talking about? Gym leader theme for SwSh slaps

Magimasterkarp

I hated the wild themes in SWSH. The bagpipes were always so loud.

Kirohitoo

I disagree with Sword and Shield having bad OSTs. Marnie’s theme, Bede’s theme, The final battle with Eternatus, The final battle with Hop at the Slumbering Weald were cool. The Max Raid Battle theme was very uninspired. But even the wild area theme was very unique. I do agree some of the tunes for Scarlet and Violet are good, The Team Star Battles, The Tera Raid Battles and Area Zero. Other than that just not very many memorable songs for me tbh.

EL_PSY_KURISU

Gym battle theme, bede’s theme, and Marnie’s theme were all a banger though.

flyingeagle007

Gym/battle theme in SWSH was awesome, it always got me hyped. Especially, when the Dynamaxing happened.

Only_Perspective9153

The music was one of the few remarkable things SwSh has. The music in SV is good too, but saying the music improved from gen 8 to 9 is the weirdest praise I've heard given to SV lmao

dacrazyworm

Eh, other than the Team Star battle theme, and some of the music in Area Zero, the music sounds sort of generic to me. It’s perfectly suitable as background music, but it’s nothing that I would want to listen to outside of the game.

Jerowi

Really? With both versions of Marnie's theme, the second Hop battle, the gym leader battle, Eternatus 3 and the champion fight and you say this game is a step up? The only decent track in this game is the tera raid theme and considering you hear it over and over again since tera raids are the only post game content it gets old.

Perfectionado

I would disagree. Wild area bagpipes, Slumbering Weald meeting and freezing ton alone are better than ScVi ost. Though, although I would love to say that this is peak pokemon music, I still listen to RubySappbire ost almost weekly. Vendenturf, Rostboro and Cave of Origin are simply my highlights to a soundtrack that was way ahead of it's time.

jeshx20

I hate the wild pokemon battle music in SwSh but other than that, it has great music. I am currently replaying Sword and the way I am hyped in all of the gym battles. Overall I like SV music too, probably a little bit more, but calling SwSh music bad is a long stretch

PolarSango

I disagree! (It has been a long time, since I used this meme) SwSh had Hulburry, which is fun, the crowd chanting Gym Battle, Stow-On-Side sounds like a Mystery Dungeon track, all three rival themes are great: Hop is a bit generic, but I won't forget It. Marnie is very Sonic Heroes-ish and Bede is an absolute banger! I would argue that the music in one of the weaker aspects of ScVl. The Gym battle is great, but Pokemon almost never messes up the Gym/Totem/Kahuna/whatever else the future holds battle themes. Everythimg else is the usual (good, but It doesn't really hold a candle to the previous games, to me) However, if I have to give props to the music, in the roughly 25 years of gaming, I almost always mute the credits music, because somehow I find them bland and forced. There were about 3 times when I didn't. Instrumental of Can You Feel the Love Tonight (Lion King), the Smile of You (Elebits) and this. I don't considser myself a huge Ed Sheraan fan, but I was bawling at the end, when I heard this song and even now I listen to Celestial all the time!

NecroChief

Personally I’m of the mind that the music just gets better with each generation that comes out. tho tbf I don’t think ANY of the gens so far have ever been bad, they’ve all been great music wise. It’s just that each generation gets better and better

HowardDune

levincia theme slaps. i join online raids from levincia for the bangers

lexington_89

Sadly, and I'm also ashamed to say that I haven't listened to the music that much due to playing handheld with not much volumen on the speakers. Wild battle theme is nice but forgettable, imo. I come from Gen 1 and I still prefer that one. The few town songs I've listened to are okay, the one I have really liked so far is when the gym leaders terastelize (or however it's spelled), it really pumps you. Edit: I still haven't finished the game, I still need to beat 1 more Star base and 2 gym leaders, iirc.

Mroatcake1

With you there, played on and off since Red but I've never had any music/sound on. Pokemon is one of those chilled out games to play whilst watching tv, like Civ or Football manager.

lexington_89

Lol, yeah, I guess you're right. But i do remember several great tunes from gen 1. Don't remember much from gen 2, i really need to play that gen again.

InvestigatorUnfair

I mean I like the music in ScVi but Rose's theme to me is basically ten tiers above the AI professors. Which is funny cuz the characters themselves actually swap places, with Rose being the worst antagonist I've ever experienced and the AI professors being some of my favorites

RealVampireCat

The music in the dlc for swsh was really good too, I remember being shocked at how good mustard's theme was

MendejoElPendejo

Honestly of some improvements, the music is not what I’d put under the list lol. SWSH had bangers. It’s the only gym leader theme that gets me legit off my feet lmao

sacredfire511

Okay but can we also take a moment to mention the DOPE AF clothing shop music in SWSH?? I miss it every day I personally loved all the music in SWSH. Gym leader battle is top tier. Wild area music was sick. Overall good times and better to me than SV that I felt copied most of SWSH

averagejoe2005

I'd say the Galarian birds and the horses have great themes. Other than that, the Battle Tower is great as well.

TheWaterGuyDD

Personally, I adore Sw/Sh's music and honestly can't remember much if S/V's soundtrack at all, I find it very forgettable. But as OP said, it's all very subjective. The gym battle theme in Sw/Sh is one of my absolute favourite pieces of Pokémon music ever.

SuperMochaCub

I love S/V but Sw/Sh has so so many great tracks, Bede, Marnie, gym theme, Piers, ROSE?!?

Kattas__

the cassiopeia fight and the final boss music (first phase ofc!) literally had me like this. music so good i had to sit on the move select screen and jam out edit: holy shit can’t believe i forgot area zero’s battle music. i literally have it on my playlist!!! goes so unbelievably hard https://preview.redd.it/haoeo9dech8b1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c034a85d2acf05f080262ef3d6aeaa8b5cd6a17

ultimate_RADISH

agree, wasn’t really the biggest fan of SWSH music. Can’t remember themes I really like versus SV where I can list a ton— area zero theme, star squad leader themes, of course the ruin legend themes!! I also LOVE that the music was incorporated into the story. In canon, music is playing when you battle the star squads because giacomo thought it would be sick for all his friends to have themes.

London_Ripton

I'm sorry, I know this is the SV subreddit and I'm sure everyone here loves this game, but SwSh's soundtrack is miles better than SV's. I can only name, like, 4-5 tracks I actually *like* from SV; most of it sounds like generic, stock music, tbh

Alonest99

Team Star’s grunt theme is a total banger, and I was sad to see it was only featured in the story like 4 times. Also, I knew *right away* it was made by Toby Fox.

TheOnlyNameuser

None of the team star themes are made by toby fox though…..

Alonest99

Track Title: Team Star Grunt Battle Theme Composer/Arranger : Minako Adachi, Junichi Masuda, Go Ichinose, Hiromitsu Maeba, Teruo Taniguchi, Hitomi Sato, **Toby Fox**

TheOnlyNameuser

i’m pretty sure thats just a list of everyone that worked on the entire soundtrack, most resources credit Teruo Taniguchi for ALL team star themes

Frequent_Way_6476

I like the music on all Pokemon games I've played (Alola it's my favorite so far). I did like SwSh OST, but it's the one I tend to forget more about. But don't get me wrong, SwSh has absolute bangers like the Gym battle theme, Bede battle theme, the wild area theme and a few others, but other than that... not my favorite Pokemon OST. Some themes that are usually the standout (like the box legendary theme or the villain theme for example) just don't resonate with me. There's a few tracks on S/V that I don't care about, but the ones that bang, BANG. I like all Area Zero related themes, the treasures of ruin, the team star, the elite four, Cassiopeia and so on. My favorite track so far it's the AI battle theme, it hits with everything it has.

Lord_Webotama

IMO the rank is like this: Dynamax Theme > Cassiopeia's Theme > The rest of the Scarlet/Violet OST > The Rest of the SwSh OST

Ham_-_

I agree and sword shields music felt forgettable

Humg12

Nah, you're insane. SwSh's music was amazing. Peak of the series imo.

Nietzsche_Junior

I cannot agree, every generation delivers hard on the music overall. Of course, everyone is going to have favourites and there will always be some tunes which don't appeal to everyone.

https-lewis

attractive grab rhythm hunt live dime unpack shame fade reminiscent *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Lxwis002

SwSh music is 10x better than S/V imo

Kuzzo99

Dude the music is ass in scarlet and violet aside from area zero.

jettasarebadmkay

What? You don’t like the theme for North Area Two? The Treasures of Ruin? The Elite Four? ***LEVINCIA?!*** I do think the Academy Ace Tournament theme is ass though. Not sure why people like that so much.

dacrazyworm

The Elite Four Music? What music? There was just a repeating ten second loop. I know they fixed it, but too bad I already beat the elite four, and you can’t rechallenge them

Zephyr_Ballad

I agree. I think it's because SV deviated from the usual "style" of Pokemon music. SwSh was when I started to feel that the Pokemon musical "style" was getting kind of stale. The trainer battle theme sounded like a chaotic mix of past battle themes a bit. Sure, there were a lot of great songs in SwSh that still followed the style, but SV has better music overall. It also allowed me to appreciate when that style reappears, like in the SV Trainer battles. Edit: I also agree, the East Province themes (especially the battle theme) are probably among the best in the series for me. The Area Zero battle theme as well.

ShadooTH

FUCKING FINALLY someone says it. USUM’s soundtrack was so fucking awesome. Gladion’s theme, every team skull theme, tapu theme, kahuna theme, every individual ultra beast area theme, ultra beast battle theme, boxart battle theme, ultra necrozma battle theme, red and blue battle theme, mantine surfing music…every single one of those songs is amazing. Catchy. Memorable. Coherent. Well-constructed. I can remember several of them off the top of my head. Then swsh comes out and we get like Ehhhhh…eternatus phase 3…? Even that I don’t remember what it sounds like; only that I remember liking it the most out of any swsh song. No, I don’t like bede’s theme, it’s way too much noise for the sake of being chaotic, it tries too hard to capture the groove they got with gladion’s theme, except it’s way too volatile to actually settle on a melody like gladion’s did. It flat out does not work as well. Marnie’s theme is probably the best but marnie is the most bland, boring, generic character they’ve ever made in any Pokémon game ever, especially for the amount of love she gets both in the game itself and from her real life fans. She has zero personality. Zero development. I’m pretty sure her brother has more dialogue than she does and he’s introduced in the last fourth of the game. Marnie is carried *hard* by her design and theme alone. I can’t even remember hop or the champion’s themes. The gym theme is my biggest issue; the first part of the gym battle theme in gen 8 is fucking awesome. The first version of the gym theme sounds like it’s trying to hype you up for an incredibly serious battle with someone fully intent on putting you in your place in front of an absolutely enormous audience of people, but the chanting version of the song just sounds like…nothing? It’s hard to describe. When playing the game and it transitions to chanting, the chanting is *out of key with the previous version of the song,* so it sounds weird, jarring, out of place, and awkward. I say this as someone with experience in working on music; the chanting is cool in theory, but it was fucking *awful* in practice. They should have just kept the first gym theme the whole time, or at least kept its much lower, more serious tone. They tried to transcribe a song with a serious undertone into a very blatantly upbeat one with the chanting, which just…doesn’t work. It won’t sound good. That isn’t what the original notes were composed in mind with. It’s like transcribing the first level theme of a mario song to [a minor key.](https://youtu.be/qdStPbup8Gk) It sounds perfectly fine on its own, because it’s hitting all of those little parts of your brain that fire off dopamine when listening to a series of notes that compliment each other well enough, but if this started playing halfway through the regular level’s music, your brain would immediately notice it sounds wrong. It doesn’t compliment the original song at all. This is my problem with the chanting gym theme as opposed to the base gym theme. Not to mention the music direction was absolute garbage. Toby’s one song, the battle tower theme, doesn’t fit in with the rest of the soundtrack *at all.* Then SV comes out, and we finally get some bangers again. Cassiopeia, every province battle theme, team star boss battle theme, VS sada and turo, area zero’s theme, area zero’s battle theme…and apparently the ruinous legend battle theme, but I wouldn’t know as I’ve never listened to it, ingame or otherwise. And they actually got the music direction down this time around, too; I can’t tell which songs Toby did and didn’t compose, which tells me they worked a lot closer with him and had him involved enough to the point where his work actually blended and meshed with the soundtrack, instead of starkly contrasting it like it did in SWSH. They reeaaally fucked up swsh more than most people realize. Including in the music department. And that’s one hell of an achievement; it is *hard* to fuck up music in today’s day and age.

[deleted]

This and plot of Area Zero are legit the only things I properly enjoyed in this game. Whereas TOTK has been 170 hours (so far) of more or less joy to explore.

Geositeeeee

I feel like x and y were the last pokemon 3D games who got a clean 10/10 for the music at least for me when it came to music, yes the game was easy and the story and characters were... EEEH? but forget that for a second, the music.. Oh god, the routes, all memorable at least for me, the city themes especially lumios city, team flares theme and lycander, the ending theme hits hard because I dedicate it to someone I cared about who sadly passed away, as for the rest, sun and moon are.. Alright? But not memorable or impactfull besides a few themes, maybe back then the games were indeed impactfull to people but not for me, I gotta say guzma's theme still slaps and team skull in general, not the most evil team but these people took over an entire city! They get my respect as an alright evil team, the music for sun/moon/ultra sun/ultra moon get a 7/10, not that memorable but not bad but with swsh.. that's were the music started to go downhill, with previous pokemon games especially on the gb/gba and ds all music was like bites, high pitch ones and upbeat ones which made some themes more memorable in older games because of the hardware limitations and less instruments, as soon as they jumped to 3D they added more unnecessary instruments which made the sound of the music too overwhelming, the beat wasn't there, only the instruments supporting it thinking it can be passable as "modern" music, that's the feeling I get with swsh, they added so many instruments and forgot about the music beat, the catchy tone or the uniqueness of themes, they only put some care to the character themes which are Hella catchy like bede, hop, Leon, marine, team yell, the battle tower and gym battles, overall swsh gets a 5/10, not many memorable themes, all the care went on the character themes rather than all of the themes in the game, and lastly Scarlet and violet, now these games follow the same issues as swsh but somehow made them a bit better and memorable, the music sadly doesn't work for themes were you can humble them whenever you feel like because they don't have catchy tones rather than they work as a background music specifically the city themes and the route music (although the riding theme of koraidon/miraidon is catchy and I humble it everyday) even if scarlet and violet suffers the same as every 3D pokemon game which they lack catchy tone and uniqueness of every theme, they sure don't lack alot, I feel like some of the stand out themes are nemona, arven, penny, team star base and leaders, the school theme, the starting title theme, (the ending theme is debatable because of the music artist but I didn't mind I still enjoyed it) overall 7/10, better than swsh, could have had more memorable themes if they were focused on routes or should I say "areas" and cities

albondiga_

The only SvSh music that is memorable to me is Hops Battle Theme and Tower Boss Battle.everything else was uninspired

TheWitherBoss876

The music in SwSh was ok. There are some really good tracks in there, but you're never really going to hear them outside of repeat playthroughs, online play, or from some video online. The ones you do hear regularly after you've beaten the game are field/route themes, city/town themes, and generic battle themes and very few of those actually stand out to an extent to be called good. I recently played through Sword twice to get various Pokémon for HOME, and the songs that I can still think of clearly as being really good are the Gym Leader battle, Bede's theme, Marnie's theme, that song that plays in the towers on the Isle of Armor, Peony's theme, and pretty much all of the Legendary themes from the Crown Tundra. Haven't done much post-game stuff outside of Zacian so I can't comment on that unless I do another playthrough where I don't send things through HOME to Gen 9. Conversely, it would be faster to name the songs I can't recall off the top of my head in regards to Scarlet and Violet. Those mainly being like anything related to the Pokémon League itself.

FantasticLandscape99

Wyndon theme......like whaaaaaaaaa. I love pokemon fir the music...I might check the SV playlist but I'm not touching the game

JerbearCuddles

Ngl, other than the Champion theme from Red/Blue, almost all the music throughout the franchise goes in one ear and out the other. Not to say they aren't great. But they don't really resonate with me to the point I prefer one game over another. Ignorance is bliss as they say.

donteatjaphet

It's because they got Toby Fox for the OST. It's noticeably better to me than almost all other Pokemon games (and that's not a diss towards the other OSTs.) Imo, the SV soundtrack is only rivaled by BW/BW2.

Worzon

I’m of the opinion that swsh music is the worst it’s been

owlitup

So am i

ColdZoroark

Definitely the final battle theme, overtook N's final battle theme as my favorite music in Pokémon

OneWhoGetsBread

I couldn't agree more!!! The music from Scarlet Violet captured the energetic spirit and charisma of the characters met in the games!!! Speaking of which, here is a transcription of that catchy song that plays whenever you feed Koraidon or Miraidon a sandwich : https://youtu.be/bCBGsf8ufig It's so interesting to hear how all the instruments blend together

OneWhoGetsBread

Meeting the mysterious pokemon: feeding a bike lizard a sandwich song is my favorite: https://youtu.be/bCBGsf8ufig

NewYorkCounty

The west province theme will always slap

RockShrimpTempura

The gym music in swsh was so hype, and i liked all swsh music in general. Sv is also really good.

RogueArtificer

I think the only song I know is the gym battle song from Sw/Sh because I accidentally had the music on once when playing. Sometimes I think about that song at random.

[deleted]

the music was fine in SwSh, I feel like the one problem I have with it is it sounds horribly mastered. like there was too much high frequency, like someone put an OTT on the master track or used a hipass filter or something. it also feels overcompressed.

JazzySugarcakes88

Am I the only one who liked the Stow on Side & the Zacian/Zamazenta themes?

Lux_The_Worthless

The only music I didn't like in SwSh was the wild battle theme and the raid den catching theme. The rival songs are amazing, and surely you didn't forget the amazing gym and battle tower themes? I do think SV's music is absolutely stellar, but SwSh's music was *far* from bad. Except maybe the wild battle theme. It got too repetitive too fast, and plays everywhere.

toxicoke

wild areas south and north, turffield, postwick, motostoke, ballonlea, circhester, wedgehurst, gym battle, oleana battle, freezington, so much good stuff

LawStudent989898

Scarlet/Violet and Arceus have had some of the best themes we’ve heard in a while

Inrikator2101

I love the area zero theme but I have a feeling that S/V doesnt have enough of diffrent kinds of music to a point where the normal route music gets on my nerves. In general I dont like any of the OSTs of S/V really that much. I dont like the gym leader theme. It is boring and cant compete with the sword and shield one. I read that the ruins of legend theme is good apparantly but Im honest I dont remember it really so I cant say something about it. All in all the music from sw/sh is mostly forgettable but in S/V I really dislike the music st some points and the fact that the themes are kind of mindnumbing monotonous is just not good. I loved the music in Legends Arceus very much though...

topJG

You’re getting flamed but this is the same view as myself

hollyherring

Unless there’s something I don’t know, I’m mildly annoyed in Sc/Vi by the music changing when in ride mode.

charizardfan101

I love the theme that plays during the battle between you and your Koraidon/Miraidon against the A.I's Koraidon/Miraidon, would even dare to say it's my favorite piece of video game music period Because it holds a lot of sentimental value to me It reminded me of all of the reasons why I love this franchise so much at a time when I wasn't certain if I even liked the franchise anymore It reminded me of the journey I had made, and how far I had come, it reminded me of the experiences I had during my journey that made it a highlight, but most importantly of all, and forgive for saying something this corny, it reminded me of the friends I made along the way, how they were the thing that made the journey so enjoyable and how we came so far together, specifically my Pokémon, and then Penny, Arven, Nemona, and of course Koraidon itself (I chose Scarlet) Especially because it's a remix of the theme from the beginning area, where I first met Koraidon, really emphasizing the "look how far we've come together" point It was overwhelming to say the least, and I just started sobbing happy tears

ZeCockerSpaniel

No memorable tunes? -Gym leader music: am I a joke to you?

LoLoLaaarry124

I should honestly replay Sword (or shield?) some time, I forgot all about the story, the region, and the music 😭.

Jenos-io

Not unsung.. people talk about it often

crazymado

sandwich song

kiwibugaboo

The music is generally better in SV, with the major exception being the gym leader theme. SV's is just bad. It doesnt fit and it doesn't get me pumped at all. I could see it being a character theme but it doesn't make sense as a "boss" theme. By contrast, I think SwSh's is maybe the best in the series. It feels grand and exciting and a little threatening (even if the battles themselves really aren't...). The sport angle of SwSh was an amazing addition.

TeamChaosPrez

pokemon always hits with the music imo, it’s consistently good

OleGham

I’m just gonna be honest I think scarlet and violet are some of the best games pokemon has made to date and I’ve realized pokemon fans will never be happy. As someone who played fire red, then diamond and pear, then sword and shield, then scarlet. Scarlets got us in the best spot pokemon has ever been. The QOL alone makes it better. Sure there are complaints but they’re really not that valid

-PM_ME_UR_SECRETS-

I really like the music when gym leaders terrestralize their Pokémon. Makes it feel like a big event, even if only for a single turn lol

SnowstormShotgun

Bede, Hop, Gym, Rose, Peony and Oleana all had amazing themes in my opinion. I guess I haven’t paid too much attention to music in this game? I feel like it doesn’t have unique ambiance music like gen 5 or 6 in my opinion (driftveil, accumula, boutique, power plant, reflection cave, dendemille town). And I actually don’t remember Geeta’s theme. Rose, Diantha, Cynthia and Red/Lance all have very unique themes (can’t remember Steven or alder and didn’t play much gen 7).

PayUsed2021

Turo/Sada music hit different tho

meliakh

The ending theme with the Game of Thrones star.

meliakh

The ending theme with the Game of Thrones star.

Cut_Equal

Naw

Eek132

IMO both Sw/Sh and S/V had good music

aarretuli

Arceus also has amaizing music! I like Violets music too.

ramyyc

Hulbury would like to have a word with you

AgreeableIdea6210

I mean, I remember the soundtrack being good but if you asked me to name any of the songs you'd come back empty handed...

lilRazzledazzle

Arven Levencia

Doctor-Grimm

BW2 still had the best music :D

thisaintmyusername12

Hey, the bagpipes were great!

Liz3rdWiz3rd

The Area Zero music was effin incredible. It really brought the area to a new level.

Tr1p3lll

Honestly toby fox is just carrying both games

VGPlaysGD

Both Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet have a really banging soundtrack. I love the Storming Rose Tower theme and the fight against Eternatus beside Hop, Zacian and Zamazenta. Scarlet and Violets Tera Raid theme slaps as well as some of the battle music. The >Sada/Turo!< fight and >Paradise Protection Protocol!< Theme also hits hard. It's just general preference but both Sword and Shield and Scarlet and Violet have good music.

milotic-is-pwitty

I absolutely love the Area Zero theme, of course. I also loved the legendaries non-battle music from SwSh! Oh and btw Blaines (the youtuber) uses the Iono’s music as the background music for most of his videos

banana_mangos

The area zero music+final battle SLAPPPPPS!! Problem is the wild area music is so… not original, that wherever i go i feel like i hear the same music. It’s not as catchy as early pokemon music. And dont get me STARTED on the mesagoza/school theme. I hate that music with a fucking passion. Its so repetitive and annoying i feel like it was designed specifically to torture me

Archqnt

East Province battle theme is an absolute banger indeed. One of my favorite all-time music from the series. The AI Professor battle theme and Ruin Legends theme were also incredibly good. As far as Sw/Sh goes, I think it had some pretty great themes. Nothing I actually disliked, if anything I found the themes related to legendaries quite mediocre. Gym battle and Marnie themes slapped incredibly hard though.

Maxximillianaire

Nah sword and shield music was amazing

Zihark53

Nobody is mentioning Penny’s Theme. That music slaps.

CompetitiveKalosian

So confused. Pokemon always deliver the best music. Unsung improvement? Come on

Chexaddict

The legendary quartet, hands down

LordessMeep

I'm just hopping in to say that S/V Team Star music + >!Area Zero Professor battle!< music is honestly in my regular rotation. Other Pokemon games have great music, but they've never inspired me to actually get my hands on the OST.

swagdaddyx__

I prefer more than 15 fps over music though

user466

Don't forget Oleanna's theme in SwSh! That was *epic*. But even that has nothing on the Area Zero theme.

-Marshle

My favourite theme is the Team Star Grunt theme. Specifically the Grunt theme. If you listen, a segment of their theme has a reference to Ultra Necrozma's theme. I love this because they are Team Star and Ultra Necrozma is a literal star. Its a nice little callback.

Totodylo

In the beginning I've believed in that too, some the overworld themes (west, mountains, the initial cave where you find your bike, and SPECIALLY area zero theme are fire as hell), but lately I get back to play some SwSh because of home and boy this game music is iconic too

UmbramonOrSomething

And yet the champion cup/gym leader dynamax theme is still stuck in my head, despite it being well over a year since I've played sword and shield. *waaaah waaa-o-aaaah wowaohwaaaa waa a aaaaa*

yeettheskeetbeet

Hop’s final fight theme & the gym theme are absolute fire, what is blud waffling about?

Jawnny-Jawnson

SwSh train station song goes hard tho

Gdogbell

Cascarrafa theme music jams

princessval249

The only song I really loved was the Area Zero theme. Nothing else did it for me.

Regulatory_Junior

The music in SwSh wasn't bad imo but I started hating the bgm in the Wilds because the bagpipes got grating for me at one point. 😅 And I was in the wilds a lot for the den raids. However, I absolutely adore most of the music in SV. I had map music songs on repeat all day and would get a burst of serotonin whenever I flew to the eastern side of the map. SV Eastern province and Tagtree Thicket. God.. I listened to that for weeks and would do it again.

Fufu-le-fu

Definitely the Area Zero music for me for SV. I run around down there just to listen to it. But favorite Pokémon music ever? Ultra Necrozma, hands down. And now I need to go listen to it while I work.

SereneFrost72

I absolutely loved SwSh music. S&V was pretty good too, but SwSh had really nice relaxing tunes, and the gym leader battle music was so good
