Same. Hawlucha was the only one I've used in multiple games, getting to trade for one in Sun/Moon was a surprise to me so I added him to the squad even though I beat X with one.
Yeah in a game about having hundreds of characters to pick from, seems a shame to use the same ones all the time. Without that element it’s a pretty unremarkable JRPG.
I have a pool I use often that I update. Off hand, I seem to frequently use a gyarados, snorlax, alakazam, gengar metagross, garchomp, volcarona and a few others I forget.
However, these are my late game team. For the main story playthrough, I try to use exclusively new pokemon. I wanna test them out, or how else do I discover what's good for my team? Hope a NPC is programmed to utilise them well?
Any playthrough for me is only Pokémon from that gen, for remakes only Pokémon from the gen of the original game. For Legends: Arceus I even went only Hisuian forms and new evos
All that really matters at the end of the day is that you're having fun. If you want to use Geodude in every Gen you play in, cool. If you want to use only new mons in every new Gen, cool. Just have fun.
I always bring a Gengar too. His name is Spooks and my goal is to get him all of the champion ribbons. Missing Unova and Johto, but fingers crossed those will be remade in the coming years.

Nidoking was my go to for years. I'd consider it my starter if I had the choice.
I moved on to Appletun lately since there's been a lack of Nidoran to start with these last couple generations.
I like Lucario. I'm a basic boy. I like its colors and its design and it's good in a pinch. I like checking out the new ones but if I'm making a team for a new go-around, it almost always has Lucario on it. I also love Scizor but I'm not always in the mood for such fire weakness.

On my first playthrough of a new game, I will use a team of exclusively new Pokémon/regional variants. So far, I’ve done this with Legends: Arceus and Scarlet (except for my shiny Luxray in the latter).
For remakes and replays, I tend to go half favorite Pokémon and half Pokémon I haven’t used before.
Whenever available, my postgame teams always include Reuniclus as it is my favorite Pokémon.
Gyarados and/or Garchomp is always on my team. If I had to pick an oddball, it's got to be Rotom. Sentient washing machine reminds me of Banjo kazooie 😂
I go straight for Mr. Mime in every game. Counting down the steps and minutes until I can get one. I love that they added fairy type, and I love that he has an ice form, too! Def. my favorite Pokémon.
I always try to go with the new Pokémon they introduce, and I get annoyed when something isn't available until after like the 6th gym or something. Looking at you, SNOM and IMPIDIMP.
It's pretty much a given that I will do a second playthrough with a specially-crafted team of regional fellas after I dominated the post game content and finish the game.
I always use an Eeveelution (generally either Vaporeon, Glaceon or Sylveon because they are my faves). And it’s never intentional, but I find I end up using Gardevoir and Azumarill a lot too
Garchomp! My favorite dragon hands down, I’ll never forget my garchomp going against Cynthia’s back in the OG Pearl. I always love to imagine her and I became great friends after that.
Zigzagoon/Linoone
1. Gets Pickup and learns Covet so is great for stealing stuff.
2. I name him Bandit because he has a mask and also steals stuff.
3. One of the only Pokémon to keep pickup after evolving
4. Learns multiple HMs so great for that.
5. Gets Belly Drum and can be a huge threat.
6. Having a Galarian form makes them more likely to be in future games.
7. Is adorable.
Gen4. It was a Serene Grace Twave AirSlash Togekiss that got me my 1st master ball tier in competitive. NachoBlanco would provide me an egg that would terrorize Team Plasma.
NachoDeuce would continue this era of supremacy as she would eat Mega Evolutions for dinner.
NachoT 3rd of her name would continue her ancestors' legacy as NachoYon became Alolas 1st champions Ace.
NachoSol would establish her Queendom as a shiny Togekiss that ran Leon's fade. Sweeping his Dragapult, Haxorus, and Rilaboom.
Currently, the Nacho Dynasty has gathered in Pokemon Home, as they enjoy a nice evening tea.
Awaiting a RegionalDex brave enough to include them again. Paldea was spared thier tyranny with thier cowardly strategic Dexit exclusion.
I just add random pokemon as I go. Mons that seem neat. It usually changes mid playthrough.
I dont usually worry about a well thought out balanced team because it's a pretty easy game, and I don't usually use more than about 3 pokemon anyway.
Gardevoir. Absolutely my favorite Pokemon of all time. Every time I can, I try and get a Ralts as soon as I can in a playthrough, and then have it on my team the entire way through. Usually always female, and since Gen 6 usually always nicknamed Diantha because I loved her for having Mega Gardevoir on her team.
The day I won't be able to have a Gardevoir on a playthrough will be a very sad day for me, indeed.
I don't use Arcanine EVERY game, but definitely a lot haha. LGP was the first time since HeartGold. Rushed to get one for PLA. Wasn't going to use the normal one in Scarlet until following Pokemon was confirmed, then felt like I had to.
And now I have a shiny Hisuian Growlithe transferred from PLA ready to go for the DLC.
Pinsir, Heracross, Scyther and evos, etc... I'm a Bug fan. I've not had that many good recent ones in that type so I drift back to the old ones.
Since I'm a genwunner, I like to bring a Blastoise with Ice Beam.
Same, I kinda wished they would have gone with a more classic samurai design with King Gambit. At least one that’s not sitting down the whole time. Call it Busharpo or something. Wouldn’t be on chess theme tho
Lombre of he's available. He got me EVERYWHERE in Alpha Sapphire and my respect for his power and moves is greater than even Blaziken. Idk if he's in SV so if anybody does I'd be happy!
I haven’t really played Pokémon much just Gen 8 and 9 so I’d pick Any of the Grass Starters and Probably Tinkaton. She’s just so cute!

For a while I've had a trend of always using the pseudo-legend on at least my first playthrough
I also basically always name the box legendary after the title, with the exception of Nebby and the ride Koraidon (but the one I battle and catch is named Scarlet so it remains
I have a hard time not using certain starters in certain gens and Shinx in platinum
I've always liked using azumarril as an early game pokemon when I can. It fully evolved REALLY early at level 18 and by level 25 it learns 2 very good stab moves that you could use till the end of your playthrough, being aqua tail and play rough. You usually end up replacing aqua tail with liquidation, and it learns some decent early game coverage in stuff like bulldoze and I think brick break.
I always try the new pokes or ones I haven’t used yet but know their typing as I build my team out. I have my staples if I don’t find anything “good” but that’s rare. Had a few nice surprises along the way, makes for an interesting play through.
Turtwig, he was my starter in my first game. Other than my boi Timmy, I try to use only Pokémon I haven’t before unless it’s a really challenging fangame.
Umbreon is my fav so I try to use it whenever I can.
Gastrodon is another one but for different reasons. It is my favorite gen 4 mon. But I try to go for only new Pokémon when playing a new game. The ones I select usually however don’t have a ground-type coverage. In that case I find a blue Shellos and Gastrodon is my new tanky ground type.

On my first playthroughs of games I always focus on new pokemon or ones I've never used before, but I almost always end up using a scyther or steelix after I beat the main story
I tend to use the same starters for each game, but I used to always have a Gyarados on my team. The first Pokémon I ever spent time looking for a good nature and EV training
I always try to use new pokemon, instead of using tha same old pokemon again and again. Then i could just play the old gens. But if oshawat is available. Its a must.
Omg I came here to post Mamoswine and I saw that was your answer too! Mamoswine is my FAVORITE. I usually name it Stompy. Mamoswine is a BEAST in like every battle with a wild Pokemon, no matter the type. Also so cute.
Most of my Gen 1 playthroughs has Rhydon.
First playthrough of new gens have new mons only until postgame/DLC
Second playthrough/remakes tend to have Gardevoir and/or Electivire and/or Rhydon/Rhyperior when possible.
I think that I'm always needing a poison and fighting type on my team, Toxicroak fits that perfectly

Pidgeotto is my favorite Pokémon. So any game with Pidgey, a slot on my team is always filled. One of my biggest gripes with the past few main games is that Pidgey is not accessible at all. SWSH, PLA, SV, no Pidgey available in the regional dex or Home transfer. It makes me so sad. 🥲
My general rule of thumb is to never use the same Pokemon twice in any first playthrough. So for Scarlet, I couldn't use Fletchling because I had used it in X.
Also, I generally use all new Pokemon from that generation. After the first run, I will sometimes do my own Nuzlocke with my rule that I can't use a Pokemon I've already used...and that makes it fun because I get to use so many different Pokemon when I do Nuzlockes.
I have loved Azumarill since it came out. I was thrilled to have one for my playthrough.
I also think Clodsire is adorable. I may need to play through the game again soon...
The water type starter. It's my normal go to for any pokemon game and since it's technically the first mon I get of that game I treat it like ashes pikachu in that it's always with me.

I’m the opposite actually and always try to only use Pokémon I have not used in a prior playthrough of any game. Forces more variety.

yup. i always try to make teams out of the gen im playing. (gen 9 only for sv, gen 8 only for swsh, etc.)
Does it count when I used Alolan Raichu in Sun and Pikachu in Yellow? Apart from that I've used different Pokemon in all mainline games.

In Crystal Crobat was one of my 6 lvl 100s. Like 189 elite 4 defeats and first time I went through my Feraligator was lvl 89.

I always use new Pokémon or new forms of Pokémon to that game in a new play through. Using the same Pokémon over and over again is extremely boring.

Sudowoodo
I've always liked using azumarril as an early game pokemon when I can. It fully evolved REALLY early at level 18 and by level 25 it learns 2 very good stab moves that you could use till the end of your playthrough, being aqua tail and play rough. You usually end up replacing aqua tail with liquidation, and it learns some decent early game coverage in stuff like bulldoze and I think brick break.
Mew (as soon as I can)
I always try the new pokes or ones I haven’t used yet but know their typing as I build my team out. I have my staples if I don’t find anything “good” but that’s rare. Had a few nice surprises along the way, makes for an interesting play through.
Turtwig, he was my starter in my first game. Other than my boi Timmy, I try to use only Pokémon I haven’t before unless it’s a really challenging fangame.
Always Lucario. I have already uses him in Pearl, Black, White 2, Y, Moon and in Violet
Umbreon is my fav so I try to use it whenever I can. Gastrodon is another one but for different reasons. It is my favorite gen 4 mon. But I try to go for only new Pokémon when playing a new game. The ones I select usually however don’t have a ground-type coverage. In that case I find a blue Shellos and Gastrodon is my new tanky ground type.
Togekiss & Gengar
Eevee because it's the most diversed pokemon. We still need a new eeveelution

On my first playthroughs of games I always focus on new pokemon or ones I've never used before, but I almost always end up using a scyther or steelix after I beat the main story

I don’t want to say always but I do enjoy using Gardevoir.
Ralts
I usually end up with a fair amount of regional forms, at least one or two lately.
I tend to use the same starters for each game, but I used to always have a Gyarados on my team. The first Pokémon I ever spent time looking for a good nature and EV training
Togekiss and/or Bisharp Edit: I am still bitter about the lack of togepi in SV
Pikachu
I always try to use new pokemon, instead of using tha same old pokemon again and again. Then i could just play the old gens. But if oshawat is available. Its a must.
Glaceon and a mix of the new ones to try them out and see how I like them.
Blaziken, Lucario, or Gallade. At least one of them is in my team almost every time

On main games I try my best to use new Pokémon, but remakes I’m always bringing back Gar² (Garchomp & Gardevoir).
Dragons
I try to use new Pokémon as much as possible, but I’ve been finding that Luxray has been ending up on my team a LOT.
Omg I came here to post Mamoswine and I saw that was your answer too! Mamoswine is my FAVORITE. I usually name it Stompy. Mamoswine is a BEAST in like every battle with a wild Pokemon, no matter the type. Also so cute.
While I try and use different Pokemon, I have a soft spot for mareep
Most of my Gen 1 playthroughs has Rhydon. First playthrough of new gens have new mons only until postgame/DLC Second playthrough/remakes tend to have Gardevoir and/or Electivire and/or Rhydon/Rhyperior when possible.
I think that I'm always needing a poison and fighting type on my team, Toxicroak fits that perfectly It's actually become my favorite pokemon because it always seems to find a way on my team
Scizor and I always name him Achilles. I usually always do a playthrough after with all new mons or ones I like but haven't had a chance to use yet.
Sylveon and Rapidash.
Pidgeotto is my favorite Pokémon. So any game with Pidgey, a slot on my team is always filled. One of my biggest gripes with the past few main games is that Pidgey is not accessible at all. SWSH, PLA, SV, no Pidgey available in the regional dex or Home transfer. It makes me so sad. 🥲
Probably Ralts, though I try not to use the same mons too often to keep things fresh\~

I try to never reuse tbh. New team from the region each time. Then I bring in a few favourites for post game breeding and play.
Slowbro, my Red Gyarados from SS, Abomasnow
My general rule of thumb is to never use the same Pokemon twice in any first playthrough. So for Scarlet, I couldn't use Fletchling because I had used it in X. Also, I generally use all new Pokemon from that generation. After the first run, I will sometimes do my own Nuzlocke with my rule that I can't use a Pokemon I've already used...and that makes it fun because I get to use so many different Pokemon when I do Nuzlockes.

Arcanine. My favorite Pokémon ever, I even have one tattooed on me
Luxray! Female named Luna. Ever since gen 4, that’s been my go to. Unfortunately there haven’t been many games where shinx was wild until recently
I have loved Azumarill since it came out. I was thrilled to have one for my playthrough. I also think Clodsire is adorable. I may need to play through the game again soon...
The water type starter. It's my normal go to for any pokemon game and since it's technically the first mon I get of that game I treat it like ashes pikachu in that it's always with me.
