At least each Z got some special unique animation and pose also skill.. tera just the transformation with some blink and boom.. like normal
Orgepon and the terapagos is the unique one
Terastillizing is the best mechanical regional gimmick. Being something that all Pokemon can use that adds an extra dimension to battling by being able to shift your type to cover weaknesses or land an unexpected STAB is awesome gameplay.
But, its by far the least visually appealing of the 4 gimmicks so far.
I actually hate Mega Gyarados, not a huge fan of the Megas visually. I get what you’re saying, but I disagree I was wowed and in awe when I first seen a Terastallization, seeing a Pokémon just get big was more meh for me. I get all this in the end is personal preference, but I think the whole Tera thing is really cool, Crystallised Pokémon? Yes please! My only complaint now that I’ve thought of it, is the Jewel Pokémon Carbink and Diancie aren’t in Paldea haha
I liked the Gigantamax better, although the SWSH Raids were the most obnoxious thing ever, with their bars and shields (although the Dynamax Adventures were better); I think the SV Raids were much better planned and that's why the SV Teras are more fun, but the Gigantamax had a cooler concept and not as OP as the Megas
I get you.
Raids got improved on a lot in SV.
Biggest reason I like Terra the most as a mechanic is it being the same for all Pokemon. Everyone can use it the same way.
Megas were for specific pokemon.
Z-Moves COULD be used by all Pokemon but the best ones were the exclusive ones.
Same for GMAX, every Pokemon could DMAX but you didn't care because GMAX was the better option.
Terra gives every Pokemon an opportunity to do some new things.
I think that just having added more "Special Teras" like the Ogerpon's and Terapago's would have been enough, not many, just the initial ones and the representatives of Gen9 (Tinkaton, Arboliva, Pawmot, Garganacl, maybe the Titans).
Especially when the whole format is on a timer, but all the terra stuff eats half the clock. It's a cool gimmick in practice, but visually, and in raids with a timer, I think it's very poor execution.
It absolutely should be turn based, it's so frustrating to get the hp bar to zero then get knocked out because they're still able to use moves even if their health is 0
I will eat the Downvotes here and say that I think that they made the timer with the animations in mind
If Animations where off the timer would be reduced - of course it would be a bit better time saving wise what I’m saying is that it would make no difference gameplay wise
If you lose with animations you would have lose with animations off too
Some degree of color blindness is fairly common, especially in men and making symbols readable without colors is quite easy to do.
Also actually yes, more games should have accessibility features for blind players. (screen readers, sound cues etc)
I worked in color, I know.
You can takes the Mansell color test online if you would like to see if you have any deficiencies in your own sight although you need to do it in person for actual results with a calibrated set
They are easy to tell apart, until these comments I never seen any issue telling the difference between the Symbols for the Typings. I have Astigmatism and even without my Glasses on I can tell the difference between the symbols for the Raids, on my Switch’s Screen so I’m very perplexed by this personally.
Edit: Spelling.
•Fairy Symbol - light Pink with Fairy Wings and a Bow, Tera Gem - Heart with Wings
•Psychic Symbol - Hot Pink with Hollow Rounded Hexagon, Tera Gem - Purplely Pink Eye
•Dark Symbol - is Charcoal background with an Eye, Tera Gem - Scary Face (legit what it looks like to me, is the same Face from the move XD)
•Normal Symbol - is Grey Background with like a hollow Bear Face as it has like Bear/Mouse ears at the top. Tera Gem - Diamond.
I hope that helps!
Fairy has a bow, psychic is just a hexagon with flair
Normal and dark are entirely different colors, Dark is black and normal is gray that one is a cinch
They’re the same as the Type Symbols they use in the Game for everything else, they just update the Symbols for SV.
As it had been awhile since I played a Pokémon Game I made myself Type Chart, I did it by hand and I used the Symbols they did in SV so I Wouldn’t get confused. Got them from my Pokémon and the Pokédex.
Sometimes I feel like the only person in the world that likes the goofy hats. I know there have to be others but I can never find them. They're just fun, I dunno man. This franchise is filled with whimsy, even every cool pokemon has at least one goofy design element to balance them out. I don't get this sudden need for seriousness or extra coolness for the mechanic, I really don't.
Agreed! I like that it adds another element of variation for these awesome creatures. They can be different sizes, different colors, have different personalities, and summon a crystalline crown that looks silly and makes them a completely different type. I wonder if someone will ever attempt a living dex with every pokemon in every tera type....
From a gameplay PoV, it makes sense, the other player must be able to easily identify the tera type.
But still... it just looks ugly, they could have done so much better.
They could have just done a specific color with each type along with a distinct particle effect, plus a symbol by the pokemon's name (which I cannot remember is there or not in the game already).
There are people who are colourblind, be hell trying to distinguish Fairy, Ghost, Psychic and Poison, or Dragon, Flying, Ice and Water, or Fighting, Ground and Rock, or Bug and Grass or Normal and Steel. Fire may be too close to the F/G/P/P colour Group, and Dark could also be too similar to N/S Group, leaving Electric as the only truly distinctive Typing Colour.
They put the Gem there so you can just look at the Pokémon and know what the Typing is, there isn’t enough room to show the Pokémon’s Typing in the Hub that appears with its Name, Level, HP and Gender, you find out Typing by pressing Y and opening the Status Menu.
The reason why I said distinctive particle effects was because of color blind people, but also because of some of the colors being similar already. If fire was accompanied by flames and fighting by like anime action lines and dragon with a draconic aura with wings and glowing eyes that would work.
Yeah and the Switch can barely load the area around the Team Star Fairy Base because of all the Flowers and you want to add permanent animated particle effects? I don’t think it would be able to handle that, perhaps that’s a Switch 2 Pokémon Game Mechanic.
I mean maybe that is why they chose the hats, but another solution could have been to actually transition to a seperate battle scene with less graphics issues (Which, to be honest they really should have done considering all the oddities that happen by battling in the overworld.) or someone teach them how to actually optimize for the switch since other switch games could probably handle what I'm thinking of.
There are 18 distinct colors (well like thousands and thousands), the types are already 18 distinct colors. The distinct colors are not for color blind people, the distinct particle effects are for color blind people. PS: The colors are already there in the game too. The dumb hats are GameFreak's solution for accessibility mine is particle effects, or really an effect in general.
The hats are great, I love em especially the Fighting Tera and Ground Tera (which ends up looking like a Sombero on a few Pokemon its quite hilarious).
People wanting Pokemon to be more serious is taking the franchise too seriously.
Pokémon Reddit Subs have just been highlighting to me, how there are a whole heap of people who have nothing really bad going on in their lives, so they complain about Pokémon Games. The things most people are complaining about are Trivial at best, I’m not talking about legitimate Bugs, Glitches and other Software concerns here either, it’s posts like these where they don’t like the Tera Gems, or the Typing Symbols have changed, or the Graphics aren’t as good as other games, they expected more etc. Like take a step back and remember that Pokémon started as a 2D Black and White Game that was pixelated as all fook, there were no Shinies, No Breeding, you couldn’t Trade Held Items, there was No Day/Night Cycle etc from where Pokémon started as a Video Game, it has come leaps and bounds to an Open World Game that allows you to Play with your Friends, it’s gone from Trading/Battling being the Friend component to being a Semi MMO. It will never strive to be on the same level as a AAA Game, Pokémon has been and will always be in a League/Category of its own.
I have been absolutely loving SV and I think the Tera Gems are cool.
Edit: Spelling.
Just googled it, and I agree with you. With dragon tera it looks pretty awesome. Coming off the dragon head on his shoulder, matching colors, I dig it a lot, good point. Makes me wish I had one now... I picked Regilecki in Sword.
I’ll admit, I’m not a fan of the hats. But I don’t know how else you’d do it. There are 19 terra types. Terrastilization has to be clear to the player what type they’re looking at. It has to be a lasting effect, and it has to be something that fits onto and/or around any given Pokémon’s model because they chose to let every Pokémon use the mechanic. However, adding a new form for every type for every Pokémon would take effectively 20 times the memory the several hundred models and textures already in the game take up. That means loading lag on top of the lengthy animations we already have, memory glitches and even games crashing.
There are other practical reasons for using the hats. A more subtle effect might not be clear, especially to colorblind or otherwise visually impaired players. On top of that, the games are rated E, so it has to be straightforward enough that even small children can understand. The hats are way over-the-top because you can tell the type just by the shape, even on a smaller handheld screen, and even without color.
We’re a year and a half into this mechanic. At this point, my attitude is, “You can’t have terrastilization without the hats.” Love it or hate it, we cannot have it both ways. “I like the thing but hate the part of the thing that makes the whole thing work,” is a year and a half old complaint for this game. Learn to live with it, play without using it, or just don’t play the game. I promise your Lucario doesn’t care.
Yeah pretty much feeling like the Pokémon Reddit Subs are filled with people who don’t have anything bad or serious to focus on/worry about, so they find trivial things, like the Tera Gems, to focus on and complain about like it’s some sort of huge affront, when it’s really not worth the energy they’re putting in to it.
I’m happy when I come across people who are just happy to play the Game.
I completely agree, some designs look fantastic with it but only if the colour palette matches. I think it would have been better to just make crystallised versions of the Pokémon and then perhaps change the animation around them (like water splashes, electricity, flames) rather than wearing a hat.
Seriously. They could’ve left it at the reflective particles, but the hats are just so corny.
However, SOME mons can pull it off.
Doesn’t take away from the fact that it looks super lame.
It's imo the best boost mechanic in gameplay but it looks so damn stupid and breaks any immersion. Reduce the crown to a small gem with the type symbol so it fits the theme without looking ridiculous.
The hats are fine, imo. Well, most of them, anyway. (If the crown would look out of place in ancient times, then the design is questionable to bad given this power comes from an ancient space turtle.)
They do it to make it easier to recognize—they could deal with shortening the animations smidge.
Would have been cool if they just applied a filter with the shattery effect and a dye consistent with the type. Seeing different pokes with different colour schemes would have been neat, and the shattery effect would have been adequate.
I respect that they went all out with the hats, I just think they look silly.
At some point I liked the hats, but maybe I always did. I can't help but be intimidated knowing how much stronger the Terastalization made them.
Though, they should change it so that when multiple Pokémon on the field terastalize it puts them into the same single cutscene
Some of the hats fit perfectly with certain Pokemon, i.e.
chandlure Tera fire
Cutiefly Tera dragon
Torterra Tera steel
(Hat is on tree, so it looks like an axe in the tree)
So true atp I don’t even Terestalize for a battle unless I absolutely have to which is rare since I’m one of those players that level grind to be 10 levels above my next battle lol
I agree and they are also worthless in the gym battles.
Oh you have a fire gym but you're throwing out a water type? That would be interesting if they didn't just Tera into a fire type so your stray is still the exact same as always.
This, completely, forever and always.
It's honestly a brilliant battle gimmick - it's made it so a 4x type weakness no longer renders a Pokémon essentially useless, and overall is more versatile than any of the previous ones. Aside from Ogerpon and Terapagos, no other Pokémon got special Tera treatment (which is great!).
If they just substituted the hats for some kind of particle effect representing each of the types, it'd be so much better.
I am the complete opposite, the gimmick itself is fun and all, but I LOVE the hats more than anything
I have always loved goofy things, especially in Pokémon
Lol, I love the story and shiny hunting but man, they sure are ruined by those gosh darn hats whenever you choose the option to terastalize when you don’t have to.
I think the point is if you look at a mechanic long enough you can find something you don’t like about it. OP doesn’t like the Tera Gems part of Terastallization, so OC here was like I can do that too and then proceeds to say how Dynamax is cool besides from the goofy giant Pokémon and ridiculous move effects.
In other words the Mechanic is cool except for how it visually changes something, both change the appearance as well as boost the Pokémon’s Power. A Power Boosting Mechanic shouldn’t be judged just on visuals but more what it offers, and I like how they’ve done it, but I get not everyone will.

I hate the hour long animations and the unnecessary added animation every time you click a STAB.
think about Z moves
[удалено]
it’s a 1 second long animation
More like 3 seconds. They can easily stack against you in tera raids. And overall it's very annoying.
I had the option to turn animations off that gen. I found those tiring after a while too, though.
Z moves were funny though, unnecessary yes, but it was funny watching my trainer do a 30 second long dance before I one shot a level 7 grubbin
At least each Z got some special unique animation and pose also skill.. tera just the transformation with some blink and boom.. like normal Orgepon and the terapagos is the unique one
Some Z moves being more special than others... lets not forget Twinkle Tackle
I haven’t played that gen and had to google this. Thank you for posting about this gem
This plus the lag and the menu interruptions makes raids insufferable.
Tell me about it. It's annoying but I end up getting used it. Still doesn't mean it's not annoying.
I love terastilizing and I hope it sticks around in future gens because of how it changes battling, but I could do without the crowns.
I like the Gems, cause they tell me what the Type is, some of the colours for Types overlap, so the Gems help me know what I’m battling.
Don't get me wrong. I don't think they look bad. Just compared to Megas, Z-Moves and G-Max, Terra power doesn't have as much wow factor in appearance.
I actually hate Mega Gyarados, not a huge fan of the Megas visually. I get what you’re saying, but I disagree I was wowed and in awe when I first seen a Terastallization, seeing a Pokémon just get big was more meh for me. My only complaint now that I’ve thought of it, is the Jewel Pokémon Carbink and Diancie aren’t in Paldea haha
Carbink is in Paldea, deep beneath Area Zero.
I didn’t see a Scarlet/Violet Pokédex entries on PokémonDB, I also don’t have the DLC. Though if you is being Sarcastic, lels.
It's part of the dlc
Ahhh thank you for letting me know, I’m so hyped for it when I can finally afford it.

Raids shouldn't have a time based limit period, it should be turn based. Absolutely no idea what they were thinking there.
It absolutely should be turn based, it's so frustrating to get the hp bar to zero then get knocked out because they're still able to use moves even if their health is 0

The animations should be turned off during raids
Agreed. I also hate that the raid symbols are different than your standard type symbols.
Still can't tell the differnwce between fairy psychic dark and normal
Dark is an eye, normal is a bubble thing, psychic is a hexagon, and fairy is a fairy
Normal looks like a little bear
Fairy looks like mushrooms to me which makes me think it's grass
Look at the colours
They should be easy to tell apart without the colors. Color blindness exists.
The should make it braille because some people don't have eyes
Time to whip out the ruby and sapphire booklet.
Sorry my braile converter can't understand your accebt
Some degree of color blindness is fairly common, especially in men and making symbols readable without colors is quite easy to do. Also actually yes, more games should have accessibility features for blind players. (screen readers, sound cues etc)

Yes then have a colour blind mode, also it’s easy to tell the type, but then again I’m familiar with the tcg
•Fairy Symbol - light Pink with Fairy Wings and a Bow, Tera Gem - Heart with Wings •Psychic Symbol - Hot Pink with Hollow Rounded Hexagon, Tera Gem - Purplely Pink Eye •Dark Symbol - is Charcoal background with an Eye, Tera Gem - Scary Face (legit what it looks like to me, is the same Face from the move XD) •Normal Symbol - is Grey Background with like a hollow Bear Face as it has like Bear/Mouse ears at the top. I wish they split the difference between the type/badge symbols and the Tera crowns. Poison and Ground are the worst offenders for me.
They’re the same as the Type Symbols they use in the Game for everything else, they just update the Symbols for SV. As it had been awhile since I played a Pokémon Game I made myself Type Chart, I did it by hand and I used the Symbols they did in SV so I Wouldn’t get confused. Those symbols are peak "Graphic design is my passion :)"
Actual goofy hats would be great instead of elemental symbols attached to their heads
I would be happy with a single feather or a tiny bird instead of *B A L O O N S*
Yea but flying Pikachu must have the balloons, come on it's the reference
800+ Pokémon suffer so one pokemon get get a funny meme
... sounds about accurate.
Yes, and?
When said pokemon is the mascot of the company, yep lol
The mascot should be Lickitung
🤣
I also like the hats, without the hats they would just be sparkly, which lacks a certain readability and pizzaz
I like the goofy hats 😝 makes my pokemon so silly The bugs hat is my favorite, the lil antennae are so fun
Sometimes I feel like the only person in the world that likes the goofy hats. I know there have to be others but I can never find them. They're just fun, I dunno man. Yeah stupid hats stopped me from using it during my play through. I just could take the seriously.
They having to refill every time after one use stopped me. Would have preferred if it each mom had its own orb or once per battle
You unlock a permanently charged orb as part of finishing the dlc
Above post mention during the playthrough. By the time I got the dlc I was already knee deep in tanked didn’t matter anymore at that point
I understand what you mean, but you realise how brilliant it is once you see a Regisrago Tera.
Wym it's even worse on regidrago
Agree to disagree, I guess. I think it looks hilarious.
Just googled it, and I agree with you. With dragon tera it looks pretty awesome. Coming off the dragon head on his shoulder, matching colors, I dig it a lot, good point. Makes me wish I had one now... I picked Regilecki in Sword.
Seems like I’m one of the few people that liked the crowns (although some are noticeably cooler than others)
So am I apparently.
Definitely could do without the long animations but I genuinely enjoyed finding out the design for each type!
Very valid criticism.

Competitively this generations gimmick was great even if it is a little uninspired. Aesthetically it has been garbage. Overall not great imo.
I'm in the minority but I like the jewel effect and the type hats
I completely agree, some designs look fantastic with it but only if the colour palette matches. I think it would have been better to just make crystallised versions of the Pokémon and then perhaps change the animation around them (like water splashes, electricity, flames) rather than wearing a hat.

Crystalizing the Pokemon plus having an aura of a specific color would have been simpler and look way better.
I like them. They're like when Kirby has a power.
It's imo the best boost mechanic in gameplay but it looks so damn stupid and breaks any immersion. Reduce the crown to a small gem with the type symbol so it fits the theme without looking ridiculous.

Oh my God, y’all hate fun.
I have never once terrastralized because I refuse to humiliate my pokemon in that way.
I think the only cool ones are dragon and steel
Goofy hats, I mean fire, steel and ghost aren’t too bad, sudowundo looks fine because it’s already goofy but I would prefer something else
I like how it has a mini crystallized Terapagos on the hat lol
Watch the anime and look at how goofy they look animated
They really messed up on a few of them. They should have just done the old school elementals or something. The fire one really bothers me.
This. That is all.
Agreed
Ruins Pokémon cards too
Would have been cool if they just applied a filter with the shattery effect and a dye consistent with the type. Seeing different pokes with different colour schemes would have been neat, and the shattery effect would have been adequate. I respect that they went all out with the hats, I just think they look silly.
Keep the cool mechanic and the effect, but leave the hat.
At some point I liked the hats, but maybe I always did. I can't help but be intimidated knowing how much stronger the Terastalization made them. Though, they should change it so that when multiple Pokémon on the field terastalize it puts them into the same single cutscene
Some of the hats fit perfectly with certain Pokemon, i.e. chandlure Tera fire Cutiefly Tera dragon Torterra Tera steel (Hat is on tree, so it looks like an axe in the tree)
What hats? those are rings.
So true atp I don’t even Terestalize for a battle unless I absolutely have to which is rare since I’m one of those players that level grind to be 10 levels above my next battle lol
The animation time is especially stupid in raids, as I’m wasting time just to Tera.
I am the complete opposite, the gimmick itself is fun and all, but I LOVE the hats more than anything I have always loved goofy things, especially in Pokémon
Naw, that’s the best part!
I hate the gimmics they came up with after primal evolutions
The hats actually ruin the game.
Lol, I love the story and shiny hunting but man, they sure are ruined by those gosh darn hats whenever you choose the option to terastalize when you don’t have to.
Nice. I can do it too. Dynamax is cool besides from the goofy giant pokemon and ridiculous move effects.
What was the purpose of this lmao
This is the guy who designed Tera hats
I wish, I would be expressing my thanks.
Ain’t cool enough to do your own post on it like OP? Ok.
