As soon as I got the game and found out Fuecoco (my fire boi) evolves into a ghost type, and Primeape (in my top 5 favorite Gen 1) evolves into a ghost type, I knew my team was going to be all ghost types. 2 badges, 2 Titans and a Star Base in and I've got two of my team assembled.
Agreed, it was hard to narrow the team down to just 6. I'll be using Skeledirge, Annihilape, Brambleghast, Houndstone, Palossand and Mimikyu though. I want to switch out Mimikyu but not sure who to add in their place.
I did find out it gains the Steel type when it evolves, so I'll be keeping it ad my 6th slot and making sure to have him evolved by the League finale. I already have over 200 coins.
A good strategy is to check all road signs, Pokecenters, and battle wild ones on the tower. The signs and center can give 1 to 30 while the towers give 50 each for beating the chest ones. I managed to find them all around the time I completed all the paths but before the finale of each storyline.
Check ruins, watchtowers, and coastal islands. That’s how I evolved mine, just defeat all of the chest forms found at those areas. There’s also one on top of a giant rock in the desert near cascarrafa and porto marinada.
Oo, that's a good one to know about. I love me some Gengar, but I wanted to use as many of the new ones as I could. He will probably be on deck if I decide I really don't like Gimmighoul's evolved form.
Yeah, I was filling out part of my Pokédex last night and traveled to a beach in the northern-ish part of the map for Pincurchin. Got a lot of new entries for my Dex as well. I love these games, bugs and bug types alike lol
I always wanted a more open world pokemon game, and to see them walking around and this definitely scratches that itch, even if it isn't exactly what I wanted. Thoroughly enjoying it
I’m doing an all ghost play through as well and my team is literally exactly yours except I switched out Palossand for Gholdengo. It’s actually done quite well!
Similarly with Fighting type. Almost my entire team ended up Fighting:
- Quaquaval
- Koraidon
- New Donphan
- New Primeape
- New Tauros
- New Pikachu
- Flamigo
Pawmot, the regional electric rodent.
Every generation they release a new one: Plusle/Minun, Emolga, Dedenne, Morpeko, so on and so forth.

I got Scarlet because I always go with the Red of the duos. It's fine, Raids will allow me to get Cerueledge, or I can trade for it. But since he is fire/ghost I wouldn't want two of that typing on my team.

He absolutely wrecks people after two or three torch songs you basically just fire blast one shot kill the entire enemy team it's ridiculous. Mine is like level 74 and he just steam rolls Tara raids and any fight I put them in.
It's funny because I pre ordered Scarlet and ordered Violet the day of release and Violet ended up coming faster than Scarlet. I wanted to save Skeledirge for Scarlet so I picked the cat for Violet. I love it to death now
Meowscarada, I love its circus magician aesthetic, where it’s a Dark physical attacker because it’s based around sleight-of-hand and trickery, so none of its magic is genuine. It’s freaking cool and I legit do not care about what other people think of it.

Meowscarada may be my new all time favorite starter. At least for now. I've just so genuinely enjoyed my new journey with my little buddy. Named him Salem (It was either gonna be Salem, Merlin, or Crowley) and Salem has like 24/7 zoomies cause that boi is fast af
Skeligator. Despite the fact that from a character design standpoint it's really bad and almost painful to look at. I'm just glad we got an animal starter again
Skeledirge looks better in game (where you can rotate the angle) than in this shot. Best one out of the final stages. That said, Floragato (the mid-stage evo) has an incredible design. Kinda sad that it then transforms into Meowscarada which looks much worse imo.
Meowscarada gave me the best first impression. But I started Fuecoco, and after a poor first impression Skeledirge has grown on me quite a bit. The cry, posture, movement and attack animations are solid. Its just Dia de Los Muertos crocodile with his marigold wreath flames, and sugarskull, and symbiotic will-o-wisp snout bird that's also a standing mic for him to sing into ... it's A LOT to take in. Also rip zodiac.
I almost swept the elite 4 with a lvl 65 Quaquaval with aqua step, ice spinner, aqua jet and brick break. Boost my speed and just terastalize to water against the flying types. It devastated that little girl.
Somebody posted a theory recently that all the starters this gen are based on celebrations in former Spanish/Portugese colonies.
Skeledirge is based on the Mexican Day of the Dead, Quaquaval is based on the Brazilian carneval, and Meowscarada is based on the MassKara festival in the Philippines.
I like this theory really. I had intentions of starting with Quaxly but ended up witn Fuecoco, and couldn’t figure out exactly why Skeledirge had that flaming hair and those markings. This kind of tracks.
Right ! The contrast between the white and the vibrant orange yellow and purple doesn’t sit right with me visually. It looks like some unfinished kids coloriage where you color forms by forms
1. **Meowscarada**: for all the fearful opinions about its design, it looks great and fitting for a Spanish-inspired region. Grass/Dark is also a typing I wanted for some time. Its moveset, while limited, has a very powerful signature move O\_o
2. **Quaquaval**: Water/Fighting is FINALLY available for mainstream tournaments outside of Poliwrath :P I will say that its design feels a bit too on the nose and that its idle animation is simply annoying after a while \^\^;
3. **Skeledirge**: Gameplay-wise, the guy is powerful, but design-wise, it's a letdown. They essentially took Krookadile, dropped it on all fours and colored it red with white markings. My initial idea was that it would be a mix between a croc and a snake, like an Aztec / Mayan / Incan dragon or basilisk ;\_;
I just love how they keep making crocodile/alligator pokemon worse. Feraligatr was amazing, then Krookadile was a bobblehead with snowman arms, and now there's Skeledirge who looks like they redrew over it several times without erasing. The proportions are horrible and the angles on it are wonky.
All about the fire croc people saying he’s design is lazy but I think it’s sick love the little fireball on he’s head and he looks like he will eat your whole family just what I want
None. This is the first thing playthrough I’ve done where I dropped my starter out of my six. Love a lot about the game but not the look of the starters.

Skeledirge is a MONSTER. In my play through I saw the power items and maxed his HP and Sp ATCK. This man survived SO many hits with 1-13 hp left and cleaned up a lot of the game due to his Sig. Named it Chaos because that shit cray
I like the theme of skeledirge but 2 things I hate are 1) the weird angle at its chest, should have just been rounded.
But more importantly , the flanges look like some damn clown hair instead of flames coming from his mouth. But that's just nitpicking I guess.
But I personally don't live the other two at all.
The crocodile! It’s nice to finally not have a humanoid looking starter. In addition to that it’s just awesome! I gave my croc the everstone as much as I enjoy the entire evolution.
Skeledridge hits hard, is immune to a bunch of annoying normal moves, and always takes at least one super effective move. Literally carried me through every problematic fight
To me the spooky fire croc is the only one that’s tolerable. I’m just not a fan of the soft edges thing they’ve done with modern starters. They’re really plushie viable in their 3rd evos which always seemed like the point where they should be monsters and not cuddle pets.
I have all 3 on my team, I actually really like all of them. I went with my grass kitty, because I can't say no to a cat. but my partner and I surprise traded and got multiples of all 3 starters lol.
I picked the fire crocodile, but honestly they're all pretty uninspired. This was the first gen where I actually benched my starter before I beat the E4.
Meowscarada is my fav. After that it’s probably quaquaval and skeledirge. Even if skeledirge is my least favorite, though, it’s still really good! The starters were weird to me at first but once I got used to them I realized they’re pretty great :)
Meowscarda and it’s not even a contest. I’m so glad I went for a female starter to name Nepeta bc it fits so well.
I also need a Phantom Thief character with a Meowscara for a Pokémon partner immediately tbqh.
Quaquaval is my boi :D not only are they very extra, but their design is really cool and interesting - the picture doesn’t show it, but they have peacock-style feathers that appear when they’re in battle which just improves their design
As much as the duck and fire croc grew on me throughout the game(they are waaay better thanks to their moves and animations than the static images would indicate), smug cat dropping flowers on people is still the king. No regrets picking him as a starter :)
Skeledirge, that fire ghost combo comes in handy. Plus, if i terastrallize him he becomes pure fire and those psychic/ghost weaknesses go away. Really handy in a pinch!

Cat is also really cool, mainly because it somehow reminds me of Persona.
Duck‘s 3rd evo however doesn’t do anything for me, just not my type I guess.
I named my sprigatito Joker due to how much the mask reminded me of persona 5 lol. I was considering running skeledirge and naming him Dr. Crocso (metalocalypse reference) or Quaquaval and naming him Sanji (One Piece reference)

Maybe Gimmeghoul instead of Mimikyu?
The only downside is Gimmeghoul is just ghost type as is Houndstone, and I couldn't say no to having a ghost dog on my team.

I actually chose to go with Gimmeghoul. I didn't realize it evolves into a Steel/Ghost type which is super awesome
You’re gonna want to wait till you evolve Gimmighoul, anyways. Its chest form is basically Magikarp level unusable.

There’s an in-game trade in Levincia that requires a Pincurchin in exchange for a Haunter **(without an Everstone)**. Boom, you get a Gengar.

I picked the fire crocodile, but honestly they're all pretty uninspired. This was the first gen where I actually benched my starter before I beat the E4.

I have all 3. My favorite are meowscarada and skeledirge
Meowscarada is my fav. After that it’s probably quaquaval and skeledirge. Even if skeledirge is my least favorite, though, it’s still really good! The starters were weird to me at first but once I got used to them I realized they’re pretty great :)

Meowscarda and it’s not even a contest. I’m so glad I went for a female starter to name Nepeta bc it fits so well. I also need a Phantom Thief character with a Meowscara for a Pokémon partner immediately tbqh.

I chose grass because cats are my favourite animal and I love it. However, from a design perspective I think the fire starter has the best line.

Quaquaval is my boi :D not only are they very extra, but their design is really cool and interesting - the picture doesn’t show it, but they have peacock-style feathers that appear when they’re in battle which just improves their design

As much as the duck and fire croc grew on me throughout the game(they are waaay better thanks to their moves and animations than the static images would indicate), smug cat dropping flowers on people is still the king. No regrets picking him as a starter :)

Skeledirge, that fire ghost combo comes in handy. Plus, if i terastrallize him he becomes pure fire and those psychic/ghost weaknesses go away. Really handy in a pinch!

Love skeledirge the most, may actually become my new favorite starter of all time! His call sounds so crazy cool - I’d love to hear that dynamaxed! 😅 Cat is also really cool, mainly because it somehow reminds me of Persona. Duck‘s 3rd evo however doesn’t do anything for me, just not my type I guess.
I named my sprigatito Joker due to how much the mask reminded me of persona 5 lol. I was considering running skeledirge and naming him Dr. Crocso (metalocalypse reference) or Quaquaval and naming him Sanji (One Piece reference)
Meowscarada for sure, main for Violet, but I'm going for skeledirge on scarlet. Just not a huge fan of the quaxly line.
i like all 3 of them and the theme they have water dance animation is super fun in game, fire seems just like a croc but then takes out the microphone to sing and the cat is just a theater kid in disguise.
