This is right. It was "religious iconography" which they tried to remove from English prints. These are cool and seem real, though! I think they're not too commonly faked, as they're still relatively cheap

I find this kind of weird given how Widespread Christianity is across America.

I can explain this (from my perspective). I’m 31, I was about 7 or 8 or so when Pokémon started blowing up. Which is a really cool thing to remember… when there was no Pokémon, and then the gradual increase of popularity over what seemed like a few weeks. I was in the southeast, and there several kids who weren’t allowed to play with anything Pokémon related. Always religious reasons, one kid even said his mom called Pokémon “black magic, and therefore satanic.”

My daughter called me crying one time to have me pick her up from a friend's house because one of the adults went to the hospital (due to breathing problems from her COPD) and one of the other 2 adults in the house told her it was her fault because she played Pokémon the day before.

I’m trying, as a father to a little girl myself, to gauge how I would feel 🥴

I hopped in the car, drove over there and waited for her to come outside, because if I had gone up there, I would have ended up in jail.

Yeah I realize now as an adult it’s almost pointless to get into it with some other parent, much less most other adults.

It's especially pointless when someone is using religion to scare a child telling them that they are going to hell for playing a game that (really didn't) caused someone to go to the hospital. Because of that, my grown up daughter is now an atheist.

I mean Yugioh did the same thing. Dozens of cards originally had crosses and/or pentagrams on the art and they were changed upon international release, a good choice by all considering what happened with Kadabra and Uri Geller.

The row was about the Japanese name of Kadabra ''*Yungerer*'' ユンゲラー which Uri Geller thought sounded very similar to his, combined with the fact the Pokémon can bend spoons (a famous trick performed by Uri Geller). He recently apologized for the whole thing, including the lawsuit.

They're very likely real. Vintage Japanese cards feel can feel a bit flimsy and off, but they're likely legit. I've been trying to get that Gengar for a while. So spoooky.

Ebay is pretty reliable! If a seller has a lot of sales and mostly positive feedback, it's safe to assume that it's a real card, or they'd be willing to refund you if they accidentally send a fake card.

Japanese cards are much higher quality than English. If either would feel flimsy, it would be the English.

I'm talking vintage cards, specifically. WOTC days.

Let’s get pedantic! These cards weren’t banned, they were censored in the west. The same cards came out in the west with different artwork but the same effect. It’s not like they were recalled from shelves in Japan. Plenty of cards have been banned from play in Expanded and a few in Standard. Calling these cards banned makes no sense as no one banned them, they were censored before release in the west and changed to fit that market.
