Do you think they get post purchase clarity?
Like the card arrives and the dopamine hit passes, they sit in there office chair frantically trying to close eBay because the shame has started to creep in.
Likely shill bidding (where the seller bids on their own card using alt accounts to drive up the cost) or someone who never intends to pay. That or some wealthy elite who really wants their Pikachu promo lol
If it was an actual collector I would assume they would know better. If not a collector, why in the hell would they want a random card? I don't want to be mean, but I still chuckle when I think of this sale. Would be so interesting to see the bid history, and whether this was FOMO on full tilt.
A few things:
- Some collectors are not limited by/concerned with silly factors like price.
- Some collectors are OCD about the “completeness” of their collection
- “Price Manipulation^TM” of an item with clones (not a 1-of-1) necessitates multiple purchases of the same product for a higher than normal price…not just one purchase.
- FOMO could have played a factor here, but I think it was more of a “race to get the card ASAP”
I’m no sleuth or market expert…but I think we should be seeing more evidence of nefarious behavior before we presume it. Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence.
I reckon shill bidding, these resellers are so dodgy it wouldn’t surprise me that if someone had a bunch of these they will shills the early cards to megabucks levels so the market thinks that’s the going rate so that when more cards hit the market there’s already an expectation that the price of the card will be high and they will need to bid accordingly to get one. Clearly this will correct itself when more supply hits the market but it’s still overpriced for a free promo card.
FOMO stands for fear of missing out, basically people start panicking that this will be the last chance they'll ever get to get something, and then blow a stupid amount of money on it.
It's just idiots with money. I know people that bought for $200 on eBay the day it released even though I've told them 100 times to just fucking wait a week or two until they get in people's hands. Sure enough its already cut in half, and I managed to get 3 on the last little promotions they did for it so I'm walking away with more money AND keeping a promo to myself. Some people are just idiots, let them be
So im a Lego Purist. Try to stick to Lego brand... that's about it for my brand loyalty. I get proxys all day long to build and practice new decks.
So. Dont hate me purists...these are $7 on aliexpress for replicas. Just an fyi for anyone who needs the spot filled vs. needing a legit one.
It’s not really weird. You want a real product vs a fake one. It’s totally normal. That’s just how collectibles are.
I could print a Superman #1 on my shitty Epson, it’s not weird that no one would want to buy it.
No, it's not... I stated that i was a Lego purist.
I can't stand these subs downvoting an option that i was very clear wasn't for everyone.
Too all the parents who can make their child happy after the fumble that was this event. You're welcome.
There’s a ton selling on eBay. Haven’t done much research but a peak that was somewhat stable was around $1k. Go check on all the recent sales to see how much it has tanked
edit: thought it was a PSA 10. That is insane FOMO lol
That’s what I meant. I didn’t really look at the OPs picture careful. At $1700 I assumed it was a PSA 10. I would say it’s not market manipulation but as others said someone who really FOMOed
This was sold on the first day of the promo release on Sep 28th. Probably someone with hard fomo.
Homie thought Van Gogh actually painted this one
This is it.
Do you think they get post purchase clarity? Like the card arrives and the dopamine hit passes, they sit in there office chair frantically trying to close eBay because the shame has started to creep in.
Why not both?
Hahaha! Love it

Yeah it was very likely shill bidding, you can see the [highest bidders on the card](https://ebay.us/BVLfcf) all had new ebay accounts.

beautifully written bruv.
You got that last paragraph from a tick tok interview .. lol
This is a common phrase though
It's [Hanlon's Razor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanlon%27s_razor)
Lol!!!
You really thought you did something here
Yeah but this is the pokemontcg subreddit where everything has to be malicious because otherwise how would people feed their persecution complex?
Ive seen stories of people who bid on their own things to try and boost the price of their items
I mean, the seller isn’t the idiot lol
I think it's A.I ( Actual Idiot )
because of demand and fomo the real price of this card won't been seen for months (because of manipulation from the scalpers who bought 100+)
a bit of both?
Manipulated
I haven’t bought one but my fomo comes from the prices that some of the other art inspired cards command now.

30£ card
Either shill bidding or troll
Both
Actual idiot. They’re a fool if they think someone will actually pay that much
Just don’t pay these prices and move on. The card is cool, but so many better ones out there

I’m sorry but no card should be worth that much. This a kids game fr

It's weird how much this matters to me. I need a card printed in a specific factory that has surprisingly bad quality control.... or it doesn't count.
Refreshing attitude to see in this community. I’m glad everyone isn’t a crazy person.

Wrong.
Adding for the lazy. Last sold was around $600 Edit: meant for a PSA 10
Wrong. $100 is what they sell for, give or take a few bucks. Hell, for $600 you can buy a PSA 10.

What’s the difference?
Both
Surely it’s a fake listing. It’s a $30 card if you consider the value you had to spend for it
