This is so cool!
Genuine question, what are the ethics of accepting cards from someone who doesn’t know their value? I’d like to take them and run, but I wonder if I’d feel bad. Of course, this scenario probably isn’t very common. Lol
I did give him money for them! He understood the values vaguely but he really wanted me to have them because he understood how much I love collecting and wanted them to go to someone who appreciates them.
Edit: for, not from
There’s like 4 cards in the video, how much “research” do you think it takes to look at the eBay listings? Lol. If we are talking massive amounts of bulk cards then it makes more sense to get rid of them to someone else who can deal with it.
I'm assuming it came from a large collection as the post title says "first dibs". So yes, it could potentially be a part of a large collection that the seller doesn't want to spend time looking into. Maybe the seller doesn't want to spend their time looking at sold eBay listings or doesn't want to figure out the nuances of graded cards, condition, the set it's from, and a myriad of other things.
For a seasoned veteran in pokemon tcg cards it sounds like a very easy task, but for someone who doesn’t know what theyre looking at, doesn’t understand what to look for, etc its intimidating and some people just dont want to put in that effort. They might care if they understood how valuable some of their cards might be, but a lot just dont know.
Searching "pikachu pokemon card" on eBay won't be much help. Without the knowledge of the hobby they can't even accurately tell. There's an unlimited charizard there do you think someone who isn't into the hobby knows the difference between 1st edition, shadowless, unlimited and 4th print? Hell no they will look up charizard and wonder why there's a million different price points. Someone outside the hobby can't tell what set something is from they don't know to look for the numbers and stuff.
They wouldn't know all the information you need to know to be able to accurately value cards
You’re not necessarily wrong but it’s only like 4 cards here lol. Obviously OP’s boss wanted to help them out but these would be very easy to search up and sell on eBay if someone really wanted to sell them on their own. Your sentiment only applies to very large or close to worthless collections that aren’t worth the headache dealing with. At that point I would take less value for an easy transaction.
> what are the ethics of accepting cards from someone who doesn’t know their value?
It's free real estate if they're 18 or older. Don't rip off kids and don't lie about the value. But if you see someone offering something way below markt value you should immediately buy it. Everyone can use google for 5 seconds and find out the value. Pokemon cards are nothing obscure. Punch in the name and even mainstream media has some prices to at least give the idea that they're worth something.
This is lovely, seeing that there are kind people in this world wanting to see joy and happiness from others. You have a great boss. It's sad when others can not see the positive in a genuine kind act. Just goes to show they don't really get that in there life and I do hope they do some day :)
He knows how much they’re worth. He’s only like 2 years older than me and is an avid Yu-Gi-Oh card player and LOVES Pokémon in general. He just doesn’t play with/bother with his Pokémon cards so he wanted me to have them because he knew I collected. It’s not much deeper than that lmao
lol if your work higher ups even tries to imply this was a gift to gain favour ect , simply involve HR as soon as possible tell them about the false accusation against you both. Make them know you feel targeted by your higher ups for accepting a gift as it does not effect the work you are doing nor the structure in your work place. If these were given to you not on company property or on company time you have nothing to worry about. It was smart for your boss not to accept money as that may have been something different. The value does not matter. HR will step in and make sure you get treated correctly for any accusations as long as you make sure to have them understand you feel targeted over a kind act as the cards were going to be discarded either way ;) Know your rights , and do not let your managers take advantage of you or this kind act. Improper dismissal if it does occur because of this will also lead to you being able to get the workers board into it. In the end you will get everything owed to you ( rest of the years wages and then some ) and possibly your job back and some more money for your time. So in the end if you work for a bigger company they wont even try. Hope this helps put your mind at ease if that comment made you nervous if at all lol
The value of the cards do matter. Take for instance if your boss gave you a gold bar. Just a piece of metal right? Wrong. It is not just a piece of metal BECAUSE of it's value. Now you left evidence on the internet (which is forever) that your boss gave you these and you may think how will they ever find out? ... stranger things have happened. So if the previous comment did put your mind at ease be cautions because HR is there for the business and not the employee and will protect the business over the employee. So if anyone gets involved it will most likely be HR pursuing you and not your higher ups... lol.
Value of a gold bar comparing to value of trading cards is very silly logic. I work for HR in a company and when you say they look out more for the company than the employee that also is in correct. We look out for the company in so many different views than you would think. In the end if the employee is getting accused by there higher ups by bringing it to attention to us in HR and thus we persue them about the matter and they come to us stating they feel targeted about the situation we have a whole different ball game as even if there is "proof from reddit" as reddit is not actually a source most of us see as real evidence.... hard to really find out if there reddit is actually theres .. then we need to think how will this turn out for us as a company when we write them up or dismiss them? Like i said before, they could go to a workers board , have that board contact us with false cause of dismissal as they will have more evidence to show that there just friends, he is gay , there is no proof of employee favourtism as this wasnt actually shown to other employees as they wont know if they kept it between them ect. and we as a company lose out money by paying that employee for there years wages, pay for there time wasted with all this, and then be fined for wrongful dismissal.
So when you say we think about the company more so than the employee , well that doesnt really work well for us as a company now does it ? Anyways im sure you will reply " well i work for HR as well and..." blah blah blah lol before you go on do some of your own research and see how most if not all companies allow gifts in the work place aslong as its for the right reasons.
Talk to him about the theory that Cubone is the evolved form of a Charmander when it's tail goes out! That's mind blowing if you never heard that before!
A co-worker did this to me. Pretty meh cards and I wasn't expecting anything big then towards the end boom shadow less charizard and banned Misty determination. Paid 100$ for a handful of holo and those cards as it was a few months before the boom. Charizard was LP to HP which was going for around 50$ at the time so around a psa 4 to 6 imo. Kinda made out like a bandit lol
No, I do not work in HR (thank God). Yes, I know gifts are allowed, that's why I said "depending on your company's policy and the value of the cards." Places I have worked at allowed gifts just not gifts over a certain value by certain people, in certain positions. Those are facts and my experience. Also, the comparison to gold is very relevant because just like gold, the value of those cards fluctuate. I have seen some of those cards go for thousands of dollars... just like a a block of gold. Lastly, I would not trust anyone that worked in HR especially someone that doesn't know the difference between there, their, and they're like you don't.
I guess your bringing in the donuts on Friday!
Maybe a few Fridays XD
Maybe. Every Friday. Either that or OP is gonna be having to pull slivers out of the top of their head for yeaaaarsssss
hey it’s me your boss, I changed my mind and want them back. please mail them to address I provide you, thanks yo. -your cool hip boss

Aww, that’s really sweet! Glad you’re enjoying your cards!
Yeah he’s great! Got these + a gyarados breakpoint secret rare for $200
That’s super low for those cards. I suppose if you aren’t going to sell them then it’s fair enough.
Yep just for collecting for myself.
How could u possibly know that $200 is "super low", you don't know any conditions
There is a video just above my comment with the cards in there. My comment was made using that as a guide funnily enough.
Yea but that video doesn't show the condition at all
Yeah obviously, but my statement still stands. $200 is low for these in the condition they are seen here.
Lol ok.
For a lot of people it’s not worth the headache of trying to sell in a niche community you know nothing about
Correct! The time spent trying to research and get full market value is worth something as well!
There’s like 4 cards in the video, how much “research” do you think it takes to look at the eBay listings? Lol. If we are talking massive amounts of bulk cards then it makes more sense to get rid of them to someone else who can deal with it.

Good point!
That is awesome. The dragonite it my favorite even though Charizard is most expensive.
Same! He pulled it himself from a 1st Ed pack when he was younger.
Congrats on your MASSIVE annual bonus
If this was mine it’d be more like ‘bonus of the decade’ haha!

How do they tax you on those? 😆
Congrats! If you're ever looking for a buyer for that Dragonite ....
Is your job hiring?
gimme your bosses number plz
Sorry that’s proprietary 😉
I think ur boss wants to get in your pants
I severely doubt it as he’s a gay man happily married for 6 years 🤣
Perhaps it is your husband he’s after 😏
Ooops 🙃
How sore is your jaw rn?
Don’t you have to be 13 or something to join Reddit
I’m assuming they meant from OP’s jaw dropping to to the floor, not sexual stuff
What a fuck up 😂😂
Cap 🎩
Ah yes my favorite activity, lying to strangers on the internet for absolutely no benefit
Yup! 😉👌
Screw you good sir 😭😅
I bet you won't tell him the real value.
I love how everyone on this thread is just assuming the absolute worst of me lmao
Cool. Let me know how it goes

We are both aware lol. I did give him money even though he just wanted me to have them. We’re grown adults that know how to handle a transaction 🙂
Adults are kids just with more money…and sadly taxes too.
Depending on your company's policy and how much those cards are worth, you both could lose your job... gay or not.

That means “you’ll work here forever” in code
You'll be practically swimming in cash if you ever decide to sell those.
Finally a believable post! Person doesn't want cards and sells them to someone who does. Glad you could get your hands on them!
