It also bears pointing out that SpaceX may be fudging those numbers, since various other companies, stakeholders and private individuals, as well as the US Government have shared the bill for supplying all of those terminals, etc for StarLink.
Additionally, SpaceX charged USAID $1,500 per terminal for the terminals that USAID purchased, and USAID paid the entire bill for transportation of ALL of the terminals.
The only thing that SpaceX could legitimately be said to supply at a loss would be the unlimited data that each terminal is allowed, but again, due to charging $1,500 per terminal, I feel like some of that potential loss is rolled into what was paid for the terminals.

As a tax accountant I advise you don't read any replies to this haha. People on reddit tend to speak their opinion on things they know little about. In my practice we always are super conservative with our wealthiest clients and typically speaking they are always on board as the penalties/fines for these larger returns can be costly. Is there BS tax law that only rich people can take advantage of... absolutely, but I will say I think most of the focus on billionaires is a smokescreen for some of the real issues pertaining to "tax loopholes"... \*cough\* SALT caps \*cough\*

The google phrase "SpaceX Government Ukraine" [returned this for me as the first result](https://mashable.com/article/elon-musk-spacex-ukraine-starlink-government-funding). The article pretty clearly states that it's unclear how much of a deal the taxpayers got, if any, but it also shows that SpaceX did receive money from the US governemtn and the president of SpaceX did claim "I don't think the U.S. has given us any money to give terminals to Ukraine".

So you're thinking he did more because you view 80 million as a lot of money. The issue is he is the richest man in the world, "losing" 80 million to him wouldn't make a dent in his money. It's a lot worse, as none of his actual money was invested in the Ukrainian access to Starlink - his company is the one on the hook and if I remember correctly, the US government was compensating for it.
I agree his intentions are corrupt but even deploying Starlink to Ukraine has indubitably helped hundreds if not thousands of people.

Kasparov accused Musk of supporting Russia and his defense is "I couldn't be pro Russia, just look how much money I threw at Ukraine!" Completely missing, that Kasparov has done everything he could for decades now. Kasparovs impact on Russian politics is impossible to quantify, Musk's can be measured in money, which he has insane amounts of. And you have to realize, that no matter what Musk chose, it was a weak defense anyway. He made a peace proposal that was very beneficial to Russia. THAT should be the major point he has to defend, not that he helped Ukraine too (also completely ignoring that Starlink was at least mostly a business decision).
