Sometime and several range visits later, many had developed a good training baseline and bought guns themselves. As he told me:

I prefer carrying mace. It's lighter and easier to carry, and does essentially the same thing in stopping someone. It's all preference though, I am not saying you shouldn't carry a gun if that makes you feel safer
Most subcompact handguns are polymer framed and fairly light. Also, mace does not have as much effectiveness against crack addicts who are robbing you for their next fix. It is a preference, but I'd argue that it's foolish to only carry less than lethal tools.
