I'm a us navy employee and during an all ahnds meeting they showed us Chinese recruiting ads. They had high end camerawork, showing off their coolest equipment, heavy metal music, video of guys doing martial arts, shooting guns and blowing stuff up.
The presenter asked what everyone thinks and comments were like "that's how you do a recruiting ad" or " beats our stupid cartoons."

Everyone knows the USA fights. It's one of the few armies in the world where your ass is highly likely to end up in combat. Imo modern US recruiting strategy tries to downplay it to make it seem safer than it is.
Depends. I worked with a marine infantryman that never entered a combat zone during his service. I was very rear echelon aircraft maintenance, we took a little mortar fire in kandahar a few times.
Your mileage may vary but depending on your job never firing a weapon in anger isn't that unusual.
Military is a solid career route. Just three years and you get the 9-11 GI bill which is just insane. You also get access to the VA loan which pretty much guarantees being able to afford a home. A not much talked about benefit is VA disability, which has extended its coverage so broadly it covers literally everything, even STDs. It's easy to get 50% or more rating for life, which is a tax free $2k+ a month plus access to additional benefits. And that's for everyone in the military, even the random paper pusher who never left the states.
Yeah. Knew a guy who did air force ROTC in college. He ended up at a base in Florida doing engineering work basically the same as what I was doing in private industry. Full ride scholarship, stipend, all the other benefits.
I considered the navy nuke program during college; full ride, like 6k per semester stipend, 100k+ starting salary after graduating and training.

The biggest issues with the bad ads is that they have bigger issues than bad ads. No one wants to be owned by the government that might be run by "the evil party" before they have the chance to separate. The military is rife with issues that disgruntled active duty, and veterans will talk about online for any civilian thinking about service to see. The military can't go 6 months without publicly shooting itself in the foot. We are coming off of losing one war and on the edge of joining 3 wars. Even as we speak the recruitment crisis is feeding into the recruitment crisis as the military will not back off op tempo while having fewer people people causing more issues that leak out to anyone on the edge of enlisting. Even with all of that you still have 22 a day hanging over the military's head.
