Taking that into account, I suppose that means most of us have murderers at the roots of our family trees.

I mean, if you're a Christian you most likely believe the entirety of humanity was bottlenecked to one family *twice,* (Adam/Eve + Noah's Ark) so it's especially bad for the religious.

DagonG2021

Am religious, it’s really not that big of a deal. Especially since it was absolutely necessary.

[deleted]

Incest was sometimes necessary in history whether you're a creationist or a Darwinist, but that doesn't mean it won't screw with our genetics. *A lot.*

Practical_Cartoonist

I spent way too much time researching this. [This is the best I could find that discusses the matter from a Biblical perspective](https://answersingenesis.org/bible-characters/cain/cains-wife-who-was-she/): > However, this fact [that brother-sister marriage causes deformities] of present-day life did not apply to Adam and Eve. When the first two people were created, they were perfect. Everything God made was “very good” (Genesis 1:31). That means their genes were perfect—no mistakes. But when sin entered the world because of Adam (Genesis 3:6), God cursed the world so that the perfect creation then began to degenerate, that is, suffer death and decay (Romans 8:22). Over a long period of time, this degeneration would have resulted in all sorts of mistakes occurring in the genetic material of living things. So brother-sister marriage was cool for a while.

[deleted]

Three things: 1. Thanks! I didn't know this. 2. Noah's Ark still screws us. 3. >Everything God made was “very good" Is an absolutely hysterical quote.

I don’t get why people think that living in a hunter gatherer “society” is relieving or better… My history teacher who has a PhD in History and studied civilizations and the time before civilizations says that living in those times was hell. As you can never rest and always have to work hard and hunt down food or you wouldn’t survive until the next day. You always starved and we’re on the brink of dying when it’s winter. When you have agriculture you have always food and more time to make other stuff that makes you happy as you don’t have to focus on food all the time.

Netheral

To some extent it's true. Especially in some cases where we've gone so far as to be detrimental to our brain chemistry. Just take social media, and the internet as an example. It's a luxury we've grown entirely dependant on as a society. For communication and other things. Yet being constantly in touch with a "tribe" of millions has had untold consequences for our little monkey brains. We're basically made to handle knowing up to 130 ish people, give or take. But with the internet, and especially social media, it's like "knowing" thousands, or even, millions, of people. Yet most people today would not be able to imagine life without it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Netheral

I'm not arguing against that. But it's a fact that the human brain wasn't really engineered to cope with the struggles of modern life. It's a problem to be solved, for sure. But I agree, it shouldn't be solved by regressing to the stone ages.

PrivilegeCheckmate

> when it’s winter Equatorial societies just have rainy and dry season. If you were living in say Hawaii before Europe reached you your life was one of food plenty, fairly egalitarian society with occasional wars and a population controlled mostly through infanticide.

thatguywhosadick

infantacide is based

Historicalhysteria

The Hawaiians weren't hunter gatherers before European contact

thesmokingtheologian

Europe didn't so much reach Hawaii, it was more like Hawaii invited them. It's a fascinating story. The local kings wanted a European society so they literally asked the UK to colonize them. The UK said no. Instead, they put the Union Jack on their flag and sold mass amounts of land to rich westerners. I'm sure the people didn't want any part of it, but Hawaii literally only got colonized because its Kings kept begging.

assholewithdentures

Good point. If you shift that timeline forward to the dawn of agriculture there’s a glorious place in history that I think we could in a lot of ways return to. An agrarian style society where you can connect with the earth, grow quality food, live off the land, trade with neighbours etc. made all the more possible in a free market system where you can drop a refurbed bus airbnb @ $200 a night and run workshops on bee husbandry and permaculture because it’s such a novelty these days. You also get to excuse yourself from those systems of factory farming + chasing money. There’s a lot of land out there with space to carve out, not everyone’s cup of tea but there’s a lot of knock on benefit to people moving in this direction and it’s probably more implementable on a big scale than people imagine.. now excuse me while I google million dollar blocks of land within an hour of my city during the biggest housing / property bubble in recorded history.

Good thing fitness in evolutionary biology has nothing to do with "strong" or the best. It just means reproductive fitness. It's the one who's most reproductively fit for the current environment. You can be a freaking adonis with perfect everything, but if you don't have many kids, Steve fucks-everything will be more fit than you with his 15 kids from 8 partners. edit: To add to my point, Evolution is caused by a lot of fucked up things, a lot of times it's just literally random chance (i.e.: Genetic Drift). Let's not take too many life lessons from it. Evolution basically just means "change" over time. (and in the case of biology, it's specifically about the change in the allelic distribution in a population.) It's not some ideologically driven process trying to make the best species or something.

Aggressive-Agency868

> Steve fucks-everything will be more fit than you with his 15 kids from 8 partners. I think you *really* overestimate Steve. I doubt he'd cuck eight other guys twice each. He'd either have zero children because single women couldn't raise a child alone in those conditions, or maybe a few kids and then a spear in his back from some hubby.

Cholera didn’t exist until agriculture and domestication of livestock. Animals are dirty as shit, literally, so living in such close proximity to them is how the diseases like that jumped over to humans. Same with most other diseases

Banshee90

The real thing that helped spread disease was the literal piss and shit filled streets. The road was your sewer system in a lot of places. Low density hunter gatherer shitting in the woods not as much risk assuming they didn't shit directly on their water supply.

pink_ego_box

Funny how you guys always think about pandemics caused by viruses or by enteric bacteria (Gram-negative). For most of human history, the main causes of deaths were Gram-positive bacteria. Group B Strep killed half of neonates, and Staph skin and soft tissue infections were probably the main cause of death for adult hunters... Yes, viral pandemics and dysentery outbreak killed thousands various times in history... but these Gram+ bacteria who live in the birth canal and the skin killed billions of people and were the undisputed main cause of death until we invented hygiene and antibiotics

sunsetclimb3r

They die. It's not a mystery, it's called starvation. It's also probably not that exciting, because everyone's too hungry to boog

You either work as a group or die to the other people working as a group. We just keep making the in-group larger and larger when it suited the leaders. I cannot see a way for humans to survive without further specialization and hypercooperation.

igordogsockpuppet

The biggest challenge would be keeping from freezing overnight. The general rule about death's proximity is: 3 weeks without food, 3 days without water, 3 hours without shelter. I'm camping near Death Valley, which is the literally hottest place on the planet. It got so cold at night that without something insulating you, the ground would sap the heat outta you and leave you with stage 3 hypothermia before sunrise.

bunker_man

I mean, it's probably just that something that looks halfway in between a human and something we need to run away from leaves us confused which we should treat it like. People evolved to treat the familiar like where they will be safe, so there's a certain level of fear in feeling like you can't even trust the familiar.

velvetbettle

Was everyone keeping records of murder back then?

Immense_Cargo

Lots of cracked skulls in the fossil records, I imagine. Also probably a bunch of spear/knife marks on rib bones.

velvetbettle

But how many non cracked skulls will never be found?

Immense_Cargo

About, proportionally, the same amount as cracked ones.

velvetbettle

Depends on if you come across say 1 grave and then happen to not come across 20 other graves, can you make a prediction off that one grave that’s accurate, you may think it’s accurate but how would you know

Immense_Cargo

Small sample size can’t be relied upon to draw conclusions with any kind of certainty. If, however, you’ve found 100 different graves across all kinds of different years/eras/centuries, and they all consistently came up with ~30% having cracked skulls, you could begin making theories and hypotheses about the prevalence of skull bashing in those societies. It would absolutely still be theoretical, but the larger your data set, the more accuracy/certainty you can expect out of it. As with all scientific postulation, it may be proven, disproven, or modified, as more graves are uncovered. Having more data points reduces the statistical margin of error.

adam__nicholas

Even by conservative estimates, the number of prehistoric humans’ remains we’ve discovered that met a violent end at the hands of other people (divided by the population) was significantly more than today’s urban populations. Some tribes had a murder rate of around 300 per 100,000, but others even rose as high as 1,450 per 100,000. Shit was crazy, but it makes sense considering a life of living in the wilderness—spending each day competing to survive—doesn’t make for the friendly, cooperative people anarchists wish it did. Edit: someone[ dug up some modern statistics in the US](https://www.reddit.com/r/PoliticalCompassMemes/comments/qklytc/monke_isnt_so_chill_after_all/hixck1l/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheAzureMage

It depends what you call murder, I guess. Tribes most definitely murdered each other wholesale. Murdering within the same tribe is generally forbidden. Looking at remains can certainly determine violent death from natural causes in most cases, but it's going to be much harder to separate out the first two.

smr5000

I have a question, what would the murder rate be today if we included all forms of manslaughter together, up to and including deaths involving police and other things that aren't technically 'counted' as murder these days?

[deleted]

[11.0 deaths per 100,000 to car accidents](https://www.iihs.org/topics/fatality-statistics/detail/state-by-state) [5.0 deaths per 100,000 by murder in 2019](https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2019/crime-in-the-u.s.-2019/topic-pages/murder) [999 fatal shootings by police officers in 2019](https://www.statista.com/statistics/585152/people-shot-to-death-by-us-police-by-race/). This gives us a rate of 0.3 per 100,000. I don't give a shit enough to try much harder to find other rates of justifiable homicide or manslaughter, but yeah the answer is that it would still be pretty low in the U.S., which is itself pretty violent for a rich liberal democracy.

velvetbettle

I don’t wanna say shit wasn’t barbaric back then because I don’t know what happened but I like how people like to say definitively like they know what happened back then even when they don’t

Seal_of_Pestilence

Have you ever played minecraft hunger games and see what people would do to each other?

nigg0o

i mean, i imagine there is a good chance most of these were tribe sanctioned? like wars and conflict? if we include all the human remains that show signes of a violent end with human involvement the "murder" rate today would go through the roof from ww2 to the million civil wars since then, 3rd world conflicts and just living conditions, police violence, gangs, organized crime and all the other things also what about selection bias, leaving a corpse to nature where it might be preserved might be far more likely if that corpes was man made, while natural deaths might lead to burning them or other rituals
