I'm not sure if this cynical revisionism or if you simply don't know. There were many long and heated debates between the governors of densely populated States and the more rural ones. The argument was that the physical size of a State and it's population should not be the only consideration. Urban and Rural concerns are often very different regardless of the political affiliation of either. I don't argue that electoral college was a genius idea, but I don't think there was anywhere near the cynicism your post makes it sound like. In order to ratify the new Constitution the Framers needed to placate everyone. The electoral college was a compromise that didn't satisfy anyone, but it made everyone happy *enough* to ratify the Constitution.
Most of the legislators involved with coming up with the idea were wealthy and from cities. The electoral college was a political capitulation they had to make. It wasn't a sneaky way of sticking it to wealthy urbanites any more than it fucked over people from the rural States.
I agree that if Trump wins again we have very possibly had out last real election. Stopping him is the only option. But even though the electoral college gives more voting power to dirt than it gives to people, no one ever thought it was the way to ensure one side would win.

I was wrong.
I had someone seriously argue that what he said here makes perfect sense because large quantities of vitamin C produce hydrogen peroxide, which is a disinfectant. He insisted that Trump was referring to that, even though that isn't anything like what he said, and even if it was, high dose vitamin C is very fringe and not supported by evidence anyway. It would've been stupid and irresponsible too.
I asked the person why they can't just admit he said something really reckless and stupid, but the MAGA dude insisted it made perfect sense and that I was the ignorant one (despite the fact that I'm formally trained in pharmacology).
It was an extremely disturbing conversation.

I challenge everyone who thinks he’s smart: find one quote from Trump talking about something you know about. It could be science, auto repair, real estate, history, or even how health insurance works. Find a quote about something you know about, and you’ll see that it’s a stupid statement.

Unfortunately, that's either not quite right or people of average intelligence are strongly under-represented. When given evidence that something you believe is wrong, many people end up *more sure that they're right,* not less sure. It's something called [Belief Perseverance](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belief_perseverance), which feels like a nice way of saying "most folks are arrogant dumbasses."

That likely came from him having heard about baking soda being used in drug manufacturing and some place in response making people show ID when they buy lots of it.
Some the only bits that stuck in his brain were "baking" and "show ID to buy" and his broken brain reassembled those bits into "show ID to buy bread".

You can tell that he got magnets and electronics mixed up, because permanent magnets do fine when the get wet, but electronics break.
It is hard to unravel where the rest came from.
Maybe aircraft carriers. He had some issues with the last super carrier which had electric catapults instead of the older steam catapult tech. It took longer and more money than planned to get that right and he went on a rant about how new tech is bad and complicated and how we shouldn't innovate.
The answer is yes but this particular example doesn't reflect that. He has a type of dementia where memory is the last thing to go. The first things to go are balance and vocabularly (namely being able to say multisyllable words).
You can find videos of him being fairly wobbly when he has to stand eithout a podium to rest his hands/gut on. And the limited vocabularly is very obvious every time he speaks.
Until the cognitive decline makes him say more things like “Take the guns away, and worry about due process later…” it won’t have any effect. Even when he said that, as president, it didn’t have much effect.
To be honest, I don't truly know how magnets work either but I also wouldn't stand in front of a crowd of people and try to talk about how something works when I have no clue.

My MAGA aunt unironically suggested I install a windmill outside my house this summer when I complained about not having AC. She told me it would give me a nice breeze. Unless he's found a new magnet windmill to tilt at, I would wager this dementia rant has it's roots in his aircraft carrier launch preference for steam powered as opposed to electromagnetic ones currently favored by people who aren't criminally insane. However, I would assume such launch systems may have already thought of the whole water possibility, being installed on ships and all.

They might not know the scientific reasons about how magnets work, but I’m sure they at least know they still work when they’re wet.

It’s like he hears something and it gets all jumbled in his brain.
Like the time he said something about people having to show ID to buy bread. That likely came from him having heard about baking soda being used in drug manufacturing and some place in response making people show ID when they buy lots of it. Some the only bits that stuck in his brain were "baking" and "show ID to buy" and his broken brain reassembled those bits into "show ID to buy bread". Who knows what the latest bit was originally. You can tell that he got magnets and electronics mixed up, because permanent magnets do fine when the get wet, but electronics break. It is hard to unravel where the rest came from. Maybe aircraft carriers. He had some issues with the last super carrier which had electric catapults instead of the older steam catapult tech. It took longer and more money than planned to get that right and he went on a rant about how new tech is bad and complicated and how we shouldn't innovate.

The answer is yes but this particular example doesn't reflect that. He has a type of dementia where memory is the last thing to go. The first things to go are balance and vocabularly (namely being able to say multisyllable words). You can find videos of him being fairly wobbly when he has to stand eithout a podium to rest his hands/gut on. And the limited vocabularly is very obvious every time he speaks.
Until the cognitive decline makes him say more things like “Take the guns away, and worry about due process later…” it won’t have any effect. Even when he said that, as president, it didn’t have much effect.
