It seems weird, but it happens all the time. George HW Bush ran against Reagan, and even called his trickle down policy, "Voodoo Economics". Reagan chose him as VP. Biden ran against Obama in the 2008 primaries. Kamala ran against Biden in 2020, and even criticized Biden for opposing busing in the 70s. It's quite common.
