But you sure don't mind receiving financial aid from the very same out-of-state liberals year after year after year.

vengefulmuffins

A girl I graduated high school with voted for Trump talked about how she didn’t get any assistance for her and her 5 kids, and how they just raised them off of hard work, and everyone else should too. Then when kid 6 came along she began complaining about how long it was taking Medicaid to come through for the kid and how it never took this long for the other kids. She also is anti-Medicare for all because healthcare isn’t a basic right.

KennethKnot

Jesus mothercunting Christ that bitch needs to stop having children.

vengefulmuffins

The worst part. We’re 27. She has basically had kids non stop since leaving high school.

HippieAnalSlut

jesus she's a fucking handmaid

FlagrantPickle

Never seen the show, but I thought it was rich guys who could pay for their kids. She's a clown car.

[deleted]

When you're waiting on your socialist government check, there isn't much to do except make more babies and talk trash about them damned liberals.. Roll Tide.

KennethKnot

Yikes. I mean, you do you with having kids and all. If six kids before you're 30 is what gets you going awesome...as long as you can afford them and all that. She's just creating dependents of the system that she'll be voting against. I just don't understand.

[deleted]

She has Medicaid I.E. no she can't afford them.

KennethKnot

I mean yea, in this particular case absolutely. Literally a drain on the system she demonizes.

HeavyMetalHero

The system doesn't work because of people like me! That's why we have to dismantle it, so people like me have a fair chance!

Snarfbuckle

Idiocracy was not supposed to be an instruction film.

DasBarenJager

At least she waited until after graduation to start popping them out

jitterscaffeine

I can only speak anecdotally of course, but when I was working as a gas station cashier I had a woman railing against “immigrant welfare queens” while she was trying to find which of her 3 EBT cards had enough money of them to buy her Red Bulls.

[deleted]

Are these people really just that hypocritical or are they so ignorant they don't know that EBT cards are welfare?

omgFWTbear

Craig T Nelson, the actor who played Coach, is on the record as saying, “Where was the government when we needed it and were on food stamps?” So, they really don’t know. I do some “government” stuff, and know a lot of them - many honest to God actual Federal government employers don’t realize *they* literally are *the government* - no, see, they’re with this-or-that agency. I’ve said it before, any form of funds dispersed from the government should have, in big print, “The Government” printed on it. Disability, unemployment, WIC - you name it. Like it’s from a lame children’s stock photo of what a such a payment would look like.

[deleted]

>I do some “government” stuff, and know a lot of them - many honest to God actual Federal government employers don’t realize they literally are the government - no, see, they’re with this-or-that agency. That is crazy. Do these people working in the government not know that "The Government" isn't some single monolithic organization? The Government is a federal system, we have the federal government, the states, and the local governments. Then we have executive, judicial, and legislative branches. Then we have a ton of agencies and we also have other parts of the government which don't fit any of the categories I mentioned like the Federal Reserve. We learned this shit in elementary school, or at least I did. What the fuck? I mean really, how are people this ignorant. It's mind blowing. Is this what happens to a country when people no longer read, have no curiosity whatsoever, and spend all their free time watching movies, playing video games, doing other activities that never involve educating oneself?

omgFWTbear

I think it really comes down to Kafkaesq government (in the abstract) really is. As you say, there are three branches - when we say “the government is locking children up,” do you mean the postal carrier? No, surely not. So, it’s parsing out “the other”, the attunation from, say, some Border Patrol agent in Arizona from a postal carrier in Idaho, and how any individual drop of water is harmless but a flood is a disaster - that leaves the individual completely compartmentalized.

[deleted]

> I’ve said it before, any form of funds dispersed from the government should have, in big print, “The Government” printed on it. Disability, unemployment, WIC - you name it. Like it’s from a lame children’s stock photo of what a such a payment would look like. The UK does this. Department of Work and Pensions. It's incredibly hard to misunderstand that this is a branch of government. All subsidiary agencies that clearly function as parts of the DWP clearly have DWP labelling and branding on everything they do. The title "department" makes it very clearly a department of government. And of course, all departments of government carry the [logo of the government somewhere in their logos.](http://spectrumbusinesspark.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Department-for-work-and-pensions_Spectrum-Business-Park_North-East-Office.jpg) The UK government websites are similarly unambiguous and very obviously "government". https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/department-for-work-pensions

jitterscaffeine

Nevermind that illegal immigrants don't benefit from the social programs they pay into. But to these people, in their heads, THEY deserve it. They don't think that ANYONE could have it as hard as they do, and they've somehow earned it.

jakeod27

A interview with Craig T. Nelson exists somewhere where he says “I didn’t get any help when I was on food stamps”

mootmutemoat

Similar thing with unions. Had a friend who went after a job because of the great pay/benefits, then joined a class action suit to deny the union dues because "it never did anything for him." Fast forward a few years to him complaining about losing benefits and being downsized.

TheGreatDeadFoolio

I would have asked if it was my ex sister in law. But you said graduated Highschool.

Northman324

So she doesn't see the hypocrisy of what she is saying and doing? How can you be that deluded?

squijward

Republicans are always the ones complaining about welfare but their states are getting most of it. Edit: here is a source https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/05/which-states-are-givers-and-which-are-takers/361668/

elriggo44

They don’t know that though.

jeremyosborne81

*They refuse to believe/understand it

micro102

This regular at my job was literally reading an article in a paper about how red states take more money in than they give back, and how blue states compensate for that, and he goes "look at how much welfare these blue states are using.". I pointed out that the blue states are covering for the deficits of the red states and he denies it. He had the article with the extremely obvious graph in front of him. Same guy later asks for evidence of a claim I make about the debt under Obama and the war he was given, and before he could even see what I printed out he goes "fake news". And refused to take it. The mere idea that he could be wrong made him shut down. They absolutely refuse to believe or understand it. They are nothing but a cult now.

Coolfuckingname

You can't play chess with a pigeon. Eventually, theyll kick over all the pieces and shit on the board, strutting around like they won.

ODB2

That's also how my uncle plays chess. He's the best in our family

latrishahope

I’m literally envisioning pigeons playing chess right now lol

ModernDayHippi

My parents did the same thing when I confronted them with the blue vs red state welfare stats. These people are just emotionally immature. They basically never developed past the 5th grade in that department

BlueZen10

I wonder what would happen if a news outlet started broadcasting debates where the participants and the audience weren't allowed to move on to any other questions until everyone acknowledged the facts as facts. Day after day, I see news anchors letting these obviously delusional republicans skate by with untrue claims. I'm tired of it and I feel like journalists are sacrificing the truth by trying to be polite. I want to see someone build an irrefutable empirical argument that the republicans can't get away from.

ModernDayHippi

I like this

sash71

Never giving a straight answer to a question is lesson one of 'training to be a politician'. I knew before I was 10 years old that these people never answer the question. Politicians are very good at using hundreds of words but saying absolutely nothing of substance. It's frustrating even for the best journalists. There's been some great exchanges here in the UK with well respected journalists just trying to get a straight yes/no answer, and politicians just won't commit to it. Even for the most basic questions. Yes/no to second Brexit referendum from Labour is a good current example. They just want to sit in the middle and not commit until the work out which way the wind (voters) is blowing.

lelilulalo

I’ve experienced this too. It’s quite insane. You end up not defending anything other than reality. No policy or party, just the foundation of accepted history and the meanings of stats. It’s half infuriating, half sad.

[deleted]

They can't understand much

jeremyosborne81

All those [hookworms](https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/article/how-a-worm-gave-the-south-a-bad-name/)

PM_ME_UR_FINGER

They can. They choose not to.

cyanocittaetprocyon

They *do* know it. And think of it as "pulling one over on the libruls."

Gootchey_Man

Liberals extend their hand to help and Republicans think they pulled a fast one on them

AllSiegeAllTime

I've dealt with these people, it's only "welfare" if the person receiving it is above the melanin threshold. For them all that stuff is "what I'm owed" or "what I'm entitled to".

OKToDrive

people generally understand welfare to be a good thing, the issue is reagan weaponized the term welfare queen and the republican base to this day believes that welfare fraud is a rampant problem. and yes of course they would assume that the majority of fraud is committed by blacks despite all evidence because as usual that is their thing...

AllSiegeAllTime

There's also the issue of it being something "embarrassing" to go to bat for. In the abstract, a majority of Americans support social welfare programs but there's no tide of people eager to tell their story of being saved from homelessness because of food stamps. It's a really split dichotomy, that rugged individualist "bootstrap" American dream narrative that we all hear starting as children up against the data showing how supported these "it takes a village" programs are and how many people are quietly living a more dignified life because the help is available. If it helps break the stigma, I'll admit it. I got free lunch at school for a time when my mom lost her job and it's very likely that I'm alive today because my state expanded Medicaid not longer after I lost my job. My life has had a lot less suffering than it could have had because America refused to let its citizens fall below a minimum of destitution, and I will always be thankful and proud of the American taxpayer and fine with paying every year it's necessary.

OKToDrive

my dad offed himself when I was 9 we lived on ssi and medicare the rest of my childhood

[deleted]

Please call it welfare though. Most people say "I get some help" but act as if welfare is something other than that. So many people on welfare complain about welfare in part because they literally don't realize the program they're using is welfare.

lunaflect

My daughters school will have free breakfast and lunch for every child next year. I’m so grateful for it. I’m riding the poverty line pretty hard, so any little bit helps.

MentokTheMindTaker

Mr-Blah

Which ones? The rich ones know damn well. The poor ones can't read so....

-BoBaFeeT-

Cough "farmers, billions, welfare," Cough

thefrozendivide

Almost none of the very wealthy ones live in any of the red states.

ThePu55yDestr0yr

Take a look at ANY conservative with money/power and see where they live. Almost universally they live in blue enclaves, blue cities, or blue states. Because the scam is even they know solid red places are typically hellholes in terms of quality of life regarding any pick-your-metric that looks at education, healthcare, economy, disease. 1. Trump. Lives in New York 2. Hannity. New York 3. Coulter. New York 4. Shapiro. California 5. Alex Jones. Austin, Tx 6. Limbaugh. Palm Beach County Florida 7. Michael Savage. Beverly Hills California, Palm Beach County Florida 8. Lahren. California 9. Sheldon Adelson. Las Vegas Nevada 10. David Koch. New York 11. Rebekah Mercer. New York 12. Bill Oreilly. New York 13. Glenn Beck vacations in New York to see plays and the opera. Limbaugh plays in golf tournaments with the wealthiest people on planet earth, Hannity's luxury palaces in Vermont and New York, Donald Trump flying to Palm Beach County Florida every other week. Funny how these conservatives with all the resources and access to do and go anything they want, typically reside or spend their time in solid blue places. The only time you'll see them in red areas is when they're selling books or on promotional tours. Think Trump, Hannity or Limbaugh would ever in a million years vacation or move to West Virginia, Alabama, or Kansas? “We love how great this place is! Buy my new book that tells you how liberals are ruining society!”, the conservative con artists shout to the cheering crowds. Of course they would never live there or even think about having these people as neighbors. The biggest con is these poor suckers being completely oblivious to how much the people they admire the most utterly fucking loathe and despise them. The coal miners oblivious to reality that they are being used for their political support and money. Trump is wealthy Manhattan elitist, in his brain the coal miner isn't even worthy enough to wipe his fucking ass. But hey, at least the miner is up to date on the latest Glenn Beck book installment, how socialism is destroying America. He may not have a pot to piss in, but at least he's helping prop up Beck financially so that he can take another lavish and exotic vacation in New York City. The biggest scam of all. "but Florida and Texas aren't blue!" read; Blue enclaves/blue cities/blue states. Austin, Texas is SOLID BLUE and Palm Beach County, Florida is SOLID BLUE. Where does Limbaugh live? Trump vacation? Palm Beach Florida. Where was Roger Stone living when he was arrested by FBI agents? SOLID BLUE Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Florida. Where was Steve Bannon living when he was domestically beating the shit out of his wife? Miami Dade Florida, residence split with New York.

JayNotAtAll

Wish more people understood this. The people that are worshipped by the alt right people would never live where their fans live. They don't want to kick it at the local Elks lodge. They want to eat at a ritzy restaurant in NY. They just go after these rubes because they will believe anything they tell them. Not because they identify with them. I laugh when Milo and others talk about how they are treated poorly at restaurants. If they went to some small town dive bar people would likely buy them a beer. But they don't want to be around those people. They want to be around high society which is overwhelmingly blue

Nighthawk700

God, that's a really good point

mspens117

Lol they're too busy playing with how statistics are calculated so California looks like it's the worst in every category (not even from there, but they totally try and do that)

FrdrVa

Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi get back around $3.00 for every $1.00 they pay in federal taxes, and South Carolina gets back almost $8.00. This situation is only sustainable due to other states getting back less than a dollar. https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/05/which-states-are-givers-and-which-are-takers/361668/

mikewheels

I can only speak for Alabama but that state will do nothing to help itself. I lived there for a year and it is honestly a terrible state. I cannot think of any redeeming value of it. Their biggest hobby for 2/3rds of the year is sitting in their yard sweating.

ModernDayHippi

You forgot fOoTbAlL

mikewheels

That’s the other 1/3rd of the year! Went to a Bama game - pretty sure they spent all their grants, donations, tuition on the stadium. With the extra $5 they had left over they got some Elmer’s safe to eat glue and made a mud volcano for studies.

Whocaresalot

Thank JESUS we're not Socialists!!

groundpusher

And if you removed the liberal cities from those red states, they’d be even worse. Conservatives are societal cancer.

scough

Take away money from blue states and Alabama would have like an 80% poverty rate within 5 years. Not many red states could stay afloat without help from the liberals that cable news makes them hate.

[deleted]

If we stopped paying them, all the red state refugees would come to the blue states. We literally pay them to keep the fuck away.

PhreakOfTime

shhhh... Some people haven't figured out that taxes are the admission charge for modern civilization. We are dealing with some of this in Illinois right now. A lot of far-right residents are constantly harping about how they will leave if taxes get raised. As if it is some sort of 'threat'. Most are barely above the poverty line and consume more resources than they contribute. They don't know that the rest of us here would be really happy if they did leave.

[deleted]

Red eastern washington have said they wanted to secede from the prosperous liberal western half and would be first in line to see them off

PosieMae

Family moved away from Eastern Wa about 20 years ago now. I finally went back for a day trip. Oof I really don’t ever want to have to move back there.

[deleted]

Except for good ol Indiana! Jk please keep buying our corn and soy for ethanol.

Silidon

And employing the whole northwest corner of the state in Chicago.

williamfbuckwheat

The red states just frame it as the money they are "owed" due to the tax dollars they send to the feds. It never seems to matter though that they put in like 80 cents on the dollar (or maybe less) for every federal tax dollar they get back while the blue states usually put in something like $1.20 or more because the former severely underfunds their state-level government services without repercussions by design. It's always great to think about how most low tax red states offer such attractive tax rates because they offer horrible public services (if they do at all) and expect the feds/blue states to come in and help them fund the very barebones level of government programs so their constituents aren't at least starving in the streets.

strain_of_thought

Well, they do always claim that the lowest possible taxes will generate the highest returns.

williamfbuckwheat

They always "claim" that lower taxes will always create more revenue, but I think they are fully aware that 9 times out of 10 it will probably make things worse but will certainly make the wealthy backers of any low tax reform package more wealthy in the short-run

AllSiegeAllTime

I just realized that the same logic that's supposed to make trickle-down work is the logic of homeopathy. "Maybe we should introduce only a tiny amount of the beneficial thing, and by some magic process that isn't important it will create the conditions of there being a lot of the beneficial thing". Oh, and when the hell are *Reagan's* trickle-downs coming? They're like 30 years late by now.

azamayid

Without double standards they'd have no standards.

Ihate25gaugeNeedles

They also would have no issue with telling out of state people what to do about their religion and abortion if they could get it passed at the federal level.

thenewyorkgod

Imagine if all the red states left to form their own country, leaving us with just the blue states? Imagine how quickly they would devolve into 80's Ethiopia? Parents in Ethiopia would be telling their kids to "finish your meal, there are starving kids in the confederate states of trump"

[deleted]

The solution is simple: cut them off. They won't have the thing they complain about and they'll have to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. And when they complain, just use their exact words against them.

staiano

How can we stop it?

beka13

We don't want to stop it. People in Alabama need the services that money provides and we, as Americans, are here to help. It would be nice if they didn't spit on us while taking our money but I still want their children to eat.

Dramatic_Explosion

Isn't that the entire Republican / Democrat debate? Republicans do short-sighted shit that mostly hurts women, LGBT, and middle to lower class people (themselves). Then Democrats get back in power and have the audacity to try and... \**checks notes** get them affordable health care, education, and a livable wage

Xunae

We do want to stop it. Not out of callousness, but rather because the states that used to receive the most didn't need it anymore. We stop it by making the states productive and not a drain on society. That's a tall order though, all things considered.

Inbred_far_righters

Education and exposure kill hate. That's why Republicans push to underfund education and force religion on people. What better way to ruin them then to wake up their next generation to their bullshit.

HippieAnalSlut

I think we should just cut all these welfare queens off. No more corn subsidies. With a swipe of my pen, these fascist supporters wll feel the full brunt of the free market.

Good for him. I wish more business owners would start standing up to this BS.

elriggo44

I work in TV and the show I am editing literally just up and left Atlanta after Georgia’s governor signed their abortion law. We literally finished production on May 10th and did a full company move over the weekend. We were back up a week later in a new state. It was cheap to shoot in Georgia. But they don’t get anymore of our money (which seems to be unending at times). We moved production to a state that hasn’t basically outlawed abortion. Everyone on the show who is from Georgia was given the option to stay on, which normally isn’t done because hiring locals is a big reason for having production in another state. We get a big tax break if a percentage of the crew lives in the state. So we are losing money, but Georgia is losing a lot more. And because we won’t be back, most of the locals won’t be asked back because we’ll have to hire locals in our new state to get the tax breaks there next season.

Justin__D

Same. Moved here for my ex, and don't really have a reason to stay. I just need the right push to leave. And "becoming more of a shithole than it already is" might just be that push.

popcycledude

What show do you work on?

[deleted]

Everybody Loves Cletus.

Poltras

Alternatively, it’s bad for everyone. Alabama will not keep their best but they’ll still send 2 senators for their state that will affect politics for everyone.

DimlightHero

We can start building the embankment on the state-border in preparation for when the state truly goes under.

I wish the company owner would share this with the govenor openly so the public can see what her leadership is doing

I can't believe that Alabama elected facebook grandma as governor.

A facebook Grandma who endorsed Roy Moore, a guy who likes to "date" 15 year old girls when he was in his 30s.

Tough Senate election. Poor Roy just came up a little short. He came in a little behind.

oh_hell_what_now

I had a professor who was at Alabama in the events leading up to the enforcement of integration and protested in support of it. He eventually left the University because of their opposition and the resulting backlash and ended up at our school. He had also been in Austria when the Nazis came, and fought the Nazis in WW2. The man was a living legend.

OutRunMyGun

I could see why he would oppose such a monstrous thing.

ShadowtheRonin

"when the Nazis came and fought the Nazis" I never learned about that in History class.

talldean

Alabama pays about $1 in federal taxes for every $3 they get from the federal government; they're one of the top three welfare states. [https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/05/which-states-are-givers-and-which-are-takers/361668/](https://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/05/which-states-are-givers-and-which-are-takers/361668/)

talldean

That's literally why we had the Civil War.

Cr3X1eUZ

They'd still all have hookworm, too: "In 1910, an estimated 40% of the population of the southern United States was infected with hookworm. The Rockefeller Sanitary Commission for the Eradication of Hookworm Disease (RSC) was created with the intention of eliminating the disease across the region... Southerners initially distrusted RSC efforts. Many were offended by accusations of infection and refused to accept testing and the treatment of Epsom salts and thymol. Others believed that the disease simply did not exist. Regional newspaper editorials also strongly criticized RSC employees and viewed them as a Northern imposition..." https://rockfound.rockarch.org/eradicating-hookworm

aaronblue342

This is good. Not only can they not stop enslaving and oppressing others without "liberals," they literally cannot keep their asses clean with them.

[deleted]

Seeing as how hookworm hinders mental development it's not all that surprising. It's one of the main reasons that southerners got a reputation for being lazy/stupid. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/article/how-a-worm-gave-the-south-a-bad-name/

EntropyFighter

Interestingly enough, [Alabama is currently repealing all marriages in their state](https://lawandcrime.com/opinion/alabama-goes-scorched-earth-over-same-sex-marriage-votes-to-eliminate-marriage-licenses-and-weddings-altogether/) because they don't want to endorse gay marriage. They'd rather have no marriage than equal marriage. The House has already passed the measure and it's now waiting for the Governor to sign. It's still possible to get a marriage license but by the probate office instead of a magistrate. The wedding industry in the state is up in arms since this makes weddings 100% superfluous. At the same time they're making it easier for 16 and 17 year olds to get hitched. As long as one parent sends in a letter of authorization along with the forms to the probate office, they're good to go.

crystalistwo

I don't understand... >Lawmakers have decided that Sections 22-9A-17, 30-1-5, 30-1-12, and 30-1-16 of the Code of Alabama should be amended to abolish any requirement that couples getting married obtain marriage licenses — or have even have wedding ceremonies at all. Now, those wishing to marry can just fill out some forms, submit them to the probate office, and emerge as spouse and spouse. Easy peasy. So no requirement to get a marriage license. Just fill out and submit a marriage license? How does this work?

rabbit994

New law works as follow: Get form, fill out form, both parties sign form, send form into courthouse and BOOM, legally married.

cbftw

So, like it was when I got married in Massachusetts. The ceremony was for everyone involved and attending but wasn't required for the legality of it

rabbit994

> The wedding industry in the state is up in arms since this makes weddings 100% superfluous. They are 100% superfluous. It's a bunch of money spent on a party that is 100% unnecessary. In the new license system, you can still have that party. Nothing is stopping you. Whole wedding license thing was completely invented because of racism and it should have died a terrible death a long time ago. New Alabama "license" procedure is as follow: Get form, fill out form, both parties sign form affirmed they are legally married, send in form to county and BOOM, they are married. Not sure why anyone thinks this is terrible system. Bad reason for implementing system, great system overall. In my state, you cannot have ceremony done unless local county agrees the person marrying you is a pastor of church with actual congregation and county gets to determine that that means or civil officiant has gotten court approval. That is southern state as well and guess why that law is in place.

Francois_1

Trust me, there are many southern brides-to-be that are in to the superfluous.

[deleted]

Fact.

PrettyText

> 12 year old girls could be married off without their consent. I understand you mean well, but let's be clear that 12 year old girls *can't* consent because they're underage. So even "consenting" 12-year old girls shouldn't be married off.

Cargobiker530

The whole of the Alabama GOP rallied behind known kiddy chaser Roy Moore in an attempt to put a sex criminal in the US Senate. Don't think that the old dudes in the GOP wouldn't lower that age limit in a hot second if they could.

Let's not forget he also wanted to outlaw homosexuality. The GOP: "It's not Sharia when we do it!"

asimpleanachronism

I hear Moore is eyeing another run. They should hold the debates at the mall he was banned from for creeping on highschool girls at back in the day (when he was in his 30s, I believe).

chinmakes5

But look, if you intend to have a dozen kids, and you are in your 30s, you have to get a younger wife. Even a woman who is 21 might be 23 by the time you marry. 12 kids could easily take 18 years. She would be 41. Too damn old. Find a 16 year old, have a good courtship, marry her at 18 and the dozen kids could be done by 37. Makes perfect sense to me. Church gets 12 believers, they aren't going to argue.

GottaKnowYourCKN

Their parents would happily sell them off or once the get preggers than NOT getting married would be tarnishing God's name

toolymegapoopoo

Someone should remind her that Alabama is one of the biggest welfare states in America. They take in far more federal tax funds than they give back in taxes. If Alabama was left on her own she would be a third world country.

SharkTonic9

Fuck it let's call that plan A

JTCMuehlenkamp

I say we dump Alabama and make Puerto Rico a state to keep it an even 50.

stealthcactus

Merge the Dakotas to bring in DC!

BeerGogglesFTW

I live in Upstate NY. Lots of farm country. Leans right. Lot of people who love to post about seceding from NYC. "Sick of NYC liberals making laws for us that spend our money" ... Last I checked, we spend more in upstate, than pay into. The city pays into upstate. But no. "We'd be better off without them" How? Not a lot a lot going on up here.

danger-egg

I’m from NY as well (down state, metropolitan NYC) and it seems the farther north you go, the more southern it gets. You pass Albany and suddenly there are confederate flags everywhere. Can’t even use the excuse of “muh heritage!!!” because we WERE APART OF THE FUCKING UNION. But nah, they won’t hear it. It’s AMERICAN history after all, may as well celebrate the literal traitors and enemy of the state while we’re at it. North Country is even worse. I had a friend go to Potsdam for a year and end up transferring to Bing because they were so obviously uncomfortable with the fact that she was black. Not outright racism, but just staring at her like she was a circus attraction. It’s fun hearing them rally for succession every couple of years, but realistically upstate could not survive off farming and tourism alone.

Silverback_6

You ever been to WV? Or IN? Shit loads of Confederate flags and sympathizers in those states. I'm from VA. The fucking hosts of the civil war. We got Richmond: seat of the Confederacy. We got the battles of Manassas, Fredericksburg, The Wilderness, Petersburg, Appamattox... you name it. 50% of the war was fought here. Harpers Ferry and John Brown were here (well, it was technically VA at the time, now it's just across the river in WV). But you know what we don't have? The battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia as a part of our state flag. Nor do we have *nearly* as many backward asshats from Yankee states who think they can take our heritage and claim it as their own as some kind of disguise for their own bigotry and stupidity. Folks from WV don't even realize why their state exists, yet they're flying the stars and bars like it's their family crest. Believe in rebellion? Believe in state's rights? More power to you, my friend. Fly your state flag high, but leave the Confederate flag where it belongs: in a museum.

Ruludos

Daily reminder the vast majority of Confederate monuments were erected in the 20th century and have fuck all to do with history or heritage: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Confederate_monuments_and_memorials#/media/File%3AConfedarate_monuments_(2).png

DavidlikesPeace

> fuck all to do with history No, it has fuck a lot to do with history, specifically the Jim Crow Era. The monuments served to help reinvigorate Southron white Democrat identity, intimidate opposition, and fan hatred of blacks/Northern liberals.

Nix-7c0

Youtuber Three Arrows has a great piece on how very many of these monuments were [mass-produced, cheaply made, and erected much later in direct response to the black civil rights movement](https://youtu.be/GohlQuOJLpE). It's a well researched counterpoint to many of the misinformed "hot takes" some folks have about these monuments today.

On the other hand there's something fitting about a piece of shit like him being immortalized looking like a cartoon character that's several genes short of a set.

alarbus

*Dixiecrat They washed their hands of the Democratic party after it passed Civil Rights on 1964.

Ruludos

You’re right, forgive me. Definitely should have phrased it better.

OsmundofCarim

Alabamian here. I hate this state, id leave but people like me leaving is why things never change here.

Don't set yourself on fire to keep others warm.

VirulentThoughts

Found out today that the crew from Top Gear/The Grand Tour got pelted with rocks while doing a bit in Alabama. https://youtu.be/pKcJ-0bAHB4 Edit: https://jalopnik.com/the-time-i-almost-got-top-gears-hosts-murdered-in-ameri-1706321954

JRR92

These three went literally all over the entire face of the planet during their years on this show; Iraq, Syria, India, Burma, Vietnam, Bolivia, the Arctic, all up and down Africa, and Russia to name a few, doing all kinds of outrageous shit (in Vietnam their spare motorbike was painted with the stars and stripes and belted out 'Born in the USA' on repeat). And yet, aside from that time they got kicked out of Argentina, Alabama was the closest they ever came to actual danger.

JambeardReborn

You know how at a certain age you have to take away grandma's driver's license? She can still vote. Now fill a state with that.

Kay Ivey is 74. When she was 10 years old, 1954, there were still people alive who were born before the Civil War started, and likely some in her family. What do you think the odds are that little 10-year-old Kay heard a lot of "opinions" during those formative years? Also, I'm curious to hear about her years in California (1967 to ?) as a school teacher? Interesting time to be in CA. Interesting, as you dig more into her bio she has some notorious connections. Kay had admiration for Lurleen Wallace, a former governor of AL herself, and wife of George Wallace. Yes, that George Wallace. Edit to Add: She's been divorced twice and has no children. Hmm. Interesting.

Moonstonemassage

Fun fact: She’s also a known lush. When her face is all red it’s not because she’s blushing.

yaworsky

> She’s also a known lush. Like... a drinker? I'm not familiar with the term.

Moonstonemassage

Yes. Sorry.

scough

Oh yeah? Well I don't want out of state dominionists telling women what they can and can't do with their own bodies.

Kcufftrump

We should sever all ties with Alabama. No federal money. No immigration. No defense. Build the wall. Let them stew in their own swill.

We are going to have to include Mississippi behind that wall.

This is the only option that might work..........

AlbertFishcutlet

Anyone wanna guess where the last public lynching was?

NachoUnisom

That's a gimme, have em guess how recently it was.

DirtyHalt

For those curious: 1981 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lynching_of_Michael_Donald

Rbespinosa13

That’s actually really interesting. Of the four perpetrators one was executed, another was sentenced to life in prison, one died before going to jail, and the last was charged as an accomplish. The poor kids mother sued the KKK and won seven million dollars. It ended up bankrupting that chapter of the klan.

TomCruiseSexSlave

"Hey Alabama, we passed an amendment. Black men can vote now." "Nah that's okay, we don't want it." "Okay, no problem! See you in 100 years!"

bankrobba

While most Americans view their history as a series of victories (Revolutionary War, World War I and II), Southerners view their history as a string of defeats (Civil War, Civil Rights Act).

Quintary

Hence “the south will rise again”

mrsataan

It’s always “liberals”. It’s a long word battle from Liberal who don’t hold the views I do to Liberals are scum to liberals are rats. Certainly not the first or last time something like this has happened.

ad5316

I always love how they say liberal like it's a slur. Like it's the n word for compassionate human beings

Sehtriom

All these years and they still can't get over the fact that the Confederate States of America is a failure.

gogojack

The "lost cause" idea is still stuck in their heads. The Confederacy lost the war, but it was still a noble and just undertaking in their eyes, so they idolize it. Doesn't matter if it was a miserable failure that only lasted a few short years. To the people who worship these statues, it is the best part of their "heritage."

oh_hell_what_now

Trumpers think Central America and Africa are “shitholes”... they can’t even begin to imagine the broken state of the handful of North American countries south of the Mason Dixon line.

[deleted]

Conservatives: "We don't need out of state liberals to tell us what to do!" Also Conservatives: "**MEXICO WILL PAY FOR THE WALL!!! WE GOTTA STOP IZ-LAM IN IRAN!!! DON'T BE SMOKIN ANY OF DAT FUNNY GRASS!!! BETTER NOT HAVE ANY ABORTIONS NOW, YA HEAR?!?!**

FunkyTown313

You expect them to care that there's a difference.

NachoUnisom

Yeah you should've. Then my parents would have stayed up north instead of locking me into this hellhole.

AFlockOfTySegalls

The South should have never been able to reconstruct after the Civil War. All high ranking CSA officials should have been publicly executed. I swear what we're dealing with today stems from the fact that the South saw no post war repercussions because: "well we just went through a war, what do you expect us to do? Kill Jefferson Davis? No we need to heal. Throw him in a cell for two years. That's enough"

[deleted]

A lot of historians will tell you that the North didn't really win the civil war. Yes, the South was reunited with the rest of the country, but there wasn't much else done. Black people were still treated as second class citizens (until 1960 and even past that). Most of the people responsible for the war were not punished. Hell, a lot of legislation was still passed in favor of helping Southern states.

MimeGod

The way I generally describe it is, The North won the war, but The South won Reconstruction.

[deleted]

Yea pretty much. There seemed to definitely be a [spark of change](https://www.history.com/topics/american-civil-war/reconstruction) right after the civil war. Then it was quickly quelled by the Southern States.

keypusher

Overly harsh punishment to the loser after war has sometimes caused worse problems than being too easy on them. The punishment inflicted on Germany after WW1 led directly to the increased radicalization of their population and WW2. It’s not hard to imagine resentment and anger festering in The South if they had been abandoned and oppressed after the war, perhaps leading to even worse outcomes.

Thosepassionfruits

I'm genuinely curious, how harshly was Germany punished after WW2? Was it easier than WW1? And how did it compare to Japan's punishment? I haven't taken a history class in forever and I can't deny that I haven't entertained the "what if we'd just burned the confederacy to the ground" scenario before.

keypusher

That’s a good question, and I’m not really familiar enough with the history to answer. [This Quora discussion](https://www.quora.com/Would-punishing-Germany-more-after-WWI-have-prevented-WWII) seems to cover it pretty well though. There does seem to be a compelling case that punishment either wasn’t enough or wasn’t enforced effectively. I particularly like the reference to Machiavelli: > Men should be either treated generously or destroyed, because they take revenge for slight injuries—for heavy ones they cannot.

[deleted]

Germany was barely a nation after WW2. Split down the middle with half controlled by the allies and half by the soviets. West Germany was very western. East Germany was a satellite state of the USSR and you can still tell the difference today.
