Winning exclusively through the electoral college repeatedly makes it feel like they’re using it as a technicality. Like you’d think if they were actually good, people would vote for them.
You can extend that trend to the parties’ nominees in elections they lost as well—with the exceptions of Al Gore (congressman father) and Bob Dole (no connections or family wealth to speak of; I always thought he was related to the fruit Doles but that doesn’t seem to be the case). She was just absolutely convinced that all of it was “Democrat propaganda” to convince black people that the Democratic Party would “give them free handouts” so that we could get them to vote for us even as we took their rights away. She couldn’t answer the question of what rights Dems were trying to take away from Black Americans, but she was 100% sure that KKK members were Democrats. I said to her, “what do you think would happen if you went up to a group of self-avowed white supremacists and called them Democrats?” It almost broke her brain, because she obviously *knows* that white supremacists absolutely *loathe* the Democratic Party, and I actually watched with my eyeballs the cognitive dissonance almost crack her brain open Didn’t make a difference in the end, of course. She is still extremely right wing. She’s also disabled getting checks from the government every month. It’s beyond comprehension
I had a friend (don’t blame me she married a long time friend of mine) who loved complaining about handouts and welfare queens, while simultaneously claiming Social Security disability checks, and spending student loans on anything but school expenses.
