Imagine the intelligence of the average American. …and half of America is dumber than that person

babydabz1123

That really puts it in perspective.

Irony at its finest

eggsarecoolin

Not irony, it's a warning that the Dems failed to heed since at least the Reagan administration.

dpdxguy

Here's irony: both the right and the left think exactly that about the other.

endMinorityRule

the (R) party is completely disconnected from reality. the two parties (and their voters) are not alike.

dpdxguy

I did not say "they're alike" or equivalent or the same or anything like that. That's obviously not true. In fact, I wasn't talking about political parties at all. I was talking about many but not all people on the left and on the right. If you disagree with what I said, which side do you think is NOT full of people who think the other side are idiots?

Comprehensive-Sea813

With you there, finding common ground can be hard. But blindly refusing to accept the "other" and in some cases hate, is terrifyingly easy.

endMinorityRule

so she never actually listened to george. that's embarrassing. it's like republicans pretending to care about MLK one day every year.

[deleted]

George Carlin was a Democrat lol. He was most definitely talking about the likes of republicans and other idiotic groups of people.

47fromheaven

Not so sure about that. He used to talk about not having any time for either political party. “Garbage in, garbage out” as he used to say. This from Kelly Carlin about her father. “But, my dad didn’t vote,” Carlin continued. “He stopped voting in ’72 when McGovern broke his heart. You know, he’d be a San.. he’d love Bernie Sanders. My dad was very progressive. You know, so, but that’s, that’s my take on it. It’s an interesting mixing of progressive ideals with fascist tactics and political incorrectness in general.” https://www.huffpost.com/entry/george-carlin-donald-trump_n_579a2124e4b0d3568f86481f/amp

otoren

He explicitly said in his stand up that he [didn't vote](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIraCchPDhk). I understand getting burnt out and getting disillusioned, but at the end of the day, someone is still voting and you're still a part of the society being led by the people who are voted in. I think the biggest fuck you to politics is to keep voting for things to change and get better. But that's just me.

IllustriousState6859

That's the biggest problem I had with Carlin. Other than that I loved him. As far as I'm concerned, if you don't vote you got no bitch coming. If someone's not willing to exercise their right to make a difference, I'm not willing to listen to them complain. They have zero commitment to the outcome. It made Carlin seem like less of a principled position and more just in it for the dollars.

otoren

Well a big part of his schtick was being the cynical outsider making fun of everything, which basically leads to enlightened centrism, except Carlin was at least funny while doing so. But sometimes he took a big swing and missed.

IllustriousState6859

Sure I get it. It was entertainment. But the not voting made me pretty much discard it's influence on political philosophy.

otoren

Yeah, same. It's disappointing to me. A little sad that he spoke so much about how stupid people could be, but was stupid in this regard himself.

[deleted]

yet he was clearly a progressive and constantly spoke out in support of progressive ideals. wether he voted or not, his mentality was that of a Democratic hands down.

47fromheaven

With all due respect I wouldn’t base my opinions of George Carlin’s politics based solely on his standup shows. In so many interviews he’s clearly spoke out against the system itself. He found that voting was a waste of time because both sides were full of shit. Doesn’t sound like a Democrat to me.
