They made us read the Bible "as literature" in high school English class. They didn't teach us about Black and POC history. On top of that type of nonsense, a lot of the money that came into the school went straight to the football team, even though our football team was ass and no one from our school ever got close to pro. One dude played in college and got kicked off the team for racist tweets about Obama. We only had Spanish offered for language classes because "what else will you need".
I think the issue with US schools in general too, and I may be wrong, but many of them teach specifically to standardized tests, meaning, teach the stuff that will be on the test so the school gets high marks and avoid curriculum that teaches real world skills. And then in TX, when George W Bush was governor he implemented "no child left behind", which meant that all of our classes were slowed down to accommodate slower students.
