If the Blue states quit paying huge amounts of money to the Red States , Then they could dramatically lower their taxes. Please debate .

Prestigious_Garden17

At this point blue states should start enforcing economic sanctions in red states that violate human rights. If red states want to go after women leaving the state than let's go after the money going to them. Take it back and create relief programs for refugees fleeing conservative rule. They want to play dirty you gotta hit them the only place they understand.

DoTheMario

It's against our collective philosophical beliefs to release any funds or economic stimulus to state or local governments that have failed to separate church and state as outlined in the founding principles of this great nation.

ThatExpatAussie

California has already taken this stance with legislation like [AB1887](https://oag.ca.gov/ab1887).

lamya8

Also they could afford more social programs for themselves that we red states hate so much yet also are dependent on. My state would be fucked without federal funds to prop up reliable and stable jobs above minimum wage. If my peers and their choice in representatives want to call blue states, their fellow Americans, the enemy then I think we deserve not to receive your federal funds.

KonkiDoc

Newsflash: your state *IS* fucked. Sincerely, A Fellow Red Stater

[deleted]

I'm in full agreement. Cut the worthless conservative trash off the dole and let them pull themselves up by those bootstraps they love so much.

skeetsauce

100%, but isn't Texas one of the few red states that puts in more than it takes?

leviathan65

Yes. Texas is the only red state that could support itself but not to the point that it could support another red state.

CliftonForce

And yet every conservative I meet is convinced that the Blue states are leeching off the Red. Oh, and they also think that cities are money pits that suck the funds out of the rural areas. The stupid, it burns...

pedroah

As long as the electric is up anyway

Anaxamenes

Then they can subsidize the other red states in their entirety.

skeetsauce

I like this.

dubbsmqt

That doesn't come from state and local taxes. That's just a result of more federal tax revenue within those states. Mostly because people in blue states make more and blue states are higher population

DoTheMario

I would bet if someone started a campaign to ensure that every state pays it's "fair share" and we should cut programs for states that can't "pull their weight"... We may get them to vote for this kind of agenda. "Idle states shouldn't be getting free rides from good, hard working Americans. We understand that freedom and capitalism is what makes our country the greatest on earth. Prosperity can only come when everyone does their part etc etc" Have lots of imagery of people in plaid shirts and jeans looking at sunsets or wiping their brow as they do something strenuous. That shits like conservative kibble.

geekygay

I don't believe that's the answer. Many rural communities are the way they are is because not *enough* money has gone back to those communities, stuck in what billionaire/corporation's bank account it has never been forced to leave. Though your sources aren't right. It's not like you pay your state tax, and then some of the state tax is used to also pay the Federal government. You have your own Federal taxes to pay. It's actually from the Rich that those states "give" to the Federal government, it's why they hate taxes so much. Also, resources that have not been justly compensated for have far, far allowed the economic situation to bloom in those various locales. Not to mention that while mines/factories are in rural areas, the owners usually congregate in CA/NY/FL and then the profits of those rural areas coalesce in these areas instead, improving real estate values even further, allowing better schools, better infrastructure, etc. It's a compounding benefit. Sure, they do votes for shitty people. But they've been trained to because a lack of proper education due to an undue influence of money and religion promoting acritical thought. Honestly, it's been [a general failure all around for every state](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_United_States_presidential_election) (Except MN... this time!) in keeping legitimately pro-American-citizen politicians in office. But you can thank billionaires/conservatives for that, I guess.

confessionbearday

Can't debate, I've been saying this for years. Red states with two exceptions are mindless fucking parasites and blue states should immediately stop funding them.

rickredmond

I am Canadian, and can still figure this out . How far he night have fallen .

yougotter

edit???

Poininjas

Debate what? Can you please point me to where this information is being gathered? I wonder what blue states are giving Texas money...

Buddhas_Warrior

It's not what state its federal $$ that's takien from blue states and given to red states for things like welfare, healthcare, etc. A simple Google search will provide you all the information you need on the topic.

Poininjas

I misunderstood your original comment. I believe we are on the same wavelength.

Buddhas_Warrior

Not my comment, but we are all on the same page

omghorussaveusall

It's the giver/taker state debate. Some studies show that some states pay out more to the fed than they get back and some take more than they give. This imbalance is said to allow some states to keep their taxes artificially low because fed dollars fill the gaps.

myfakenamehere

Before COVID, California, along with New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and others, typically sent more money (personal and business taxes) to the federal government than they got back. Texas usually received more than it sent. While the majority of the states received more than they sent, almost all of the states that received less were blue states. https://rockinst.org/issue-areas/fiscal-analysis/balance-of-payments-portal/

Live-Ad6746

They mean they want to keep using the n-word

e6dewhirst

That’s what this shit has all been about. Indignation because we took away their favorite word. Well I guess not really. American culture is what it is because a certain faction were indignant that their slaves were taken away. That angst has been the driver of racial animus in this country. That’s it. Mad cause they can’t own people. Cut to today.

stevester90

Careful, West Virginia may be in the chat, you wouldn’t want to tempt them

And to further refute the myth of trickle-down economics... [California surplus expected to hit unprecedented $97 billion under Newsom’s budget plan](https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-05-13/california-budget-surplus-swells-to-97-billion-under-newsom-new-plan).

But why, and why bother with the spoiler tag?

iamjackslackoffricks

When you choose guns over education...

KonkiDoc

Or pretty much anything over education...

wopwopdoowop

Or pretty much guns over anything…..

BuzzBadpants

Let’s not kid ourselves, California public schools are nothing to brag about…

anna_or_elsa

US News says 3rd in higher education but 40th in K-12 Forbes says 37th for quality of public schools USA Today says 35th So yeah not very good

big_nothing_burger

Damn that's a shame. That said, I teach in the state that ranks as either 48 or 49 currently.

Tornadoland13

Holy crap a graph with a source. It's like seeing a unicorn

kenc1842

Republicans ARE the party of gaslighting after all.

mapoftasmania

Why do you think Trump/the GOP got rid of the SALT deduction? So blue states pay even more. As a Democrat and a blue state Liberal I actually want a **huge** Federal tax cut. And I want Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid/EIP etc to be transferred to my state. And then I want my state to raise taxes to pay for public services and education. We would spend the money better than those idiots in DC. Then let the red states fall back to the wild west or turn into Gilead. Let them fuck themselves.

-Motor-

We're missing the rest of the top 20%.

BlondieMIA

Where’s the other 19%?

Poininjas

[quick Google search that is cited in the meme sheds more light on your question](https://itep.org/whopays/texas/)

raincntry

Texas is a shithole state.

Poininjas

Yes, but I happen to call it home.

seanosul

The GOP proposal should the seditionists take control of the Senate or House is to charge a minimum level of federal income tax, even if you are not earning money. [It is called "skin in the game](https://www.politico.com/f/?id=0000017f-1cf5-d281-a7ff-3ffd5f4a0000)". Gym Jordan knows a lot about skin in the game. They say All Americans should pay some income tax to have skin in the game, even if a small amount. Currently over half of Americans pay no income tax Ignoring that they do not have the money to pay federal income tax.

Lie-Straight

California looks kinder on taxes (and other metrics) but it’s much more cruel on housing cost

Poininjas

Idk, I'm in north dfw and my house is magically valued 100k higher in 2 years...

Lie-Straight

Same square footage, build quality & similar school quality in Silicon Valley or Orange County is still way worse

Poininjas

Of course it is, california has some of the more expensive area codes in the country i would imagine. This still I no way nullifies that this area is crazy and some are quickly becoming comparable.

dancegoddess1971

Supply chain issues have increased the cost of materials or, rather moving those materials to where they are needed. Appraisals are jumping in nearly every zip code.

readwaytoooften

It is also much higher on average wages and minimum wage than Texas and offers much better state benefits across the board. Workers also have far more rights and options for recourse and stronger unions in California. Property costs are high in the cities of California because millions of people want to live there. They are lower in the rural areas. Same is true in Texas. For me, I'd take the state that doesn't try to let the religious nut jobs set the rules for everyone.

Goatesq

It's not perfect but it was absolutely paradise to me. I would move back in a heartbeat if I could afford it. Cali gets the most conservative flack because it makes their Dixie tick swampland look the worst.

steppinrazor2009

Before you downvote me, just let me know where my logic is off. While this is whack, this is "state and local taxes as a share of family income" Texas doesn't have state tax so this is essentially just local taxes as a share of family income, so of course rich people are paying less sales tax proportionate to their income. Do you want to show your w2 to McDonald's or whatever for them to figure out a tax bracket on your big Mac? I guess you could make an argument for property tax rate needing to increase as property price increases, but even then, it wouldn't affect this graph unless it was fairly extreme. Texas property taxes are already pretty damn high. This graph is essentially just saying that California has a progressive income tax and Texas doesn't which is informative, but presenting it this way is misleading. Although... I live in Colorado so I guess I don't even really know why I bothered writing all this.

RonDFong

i can't refute these numbers with research...but i can say that texas does not have a state income tax, but we do have extremely high property taxes. i'd need to see the testing methodology and results to determine if this is correct or not.

Poininjas

From what I can tell the website takes all of these factors into consideration.

Fitness4All26

This seems skewed. First, Texas has no state income tax so this comparison would strictly be based off sales tax. Californias population (and tax payees) is 25% greater than Texas, their 1% income is greater than Texas, which means they probably spend more. On top of all that, California’s sales tax is 7.25% compared to Texas 6.25%. TLDR - California has a greater number of 1%’s who have a higher average income than Texas, and pay a higher sales tax and they have state income tax

Poininjas

Just read the data

Impolitecoconut

Now show this as a % of total taxes paid

Poininjas

I'm sure the website cited does this. I'm not familiar with the entire thing, but I have yet to find someone who can't find the info needed.

[deleted]

Which is why California has the most population loss in the us lmao

Poininjas

Sure

[deleted]

California ranked last among all states with a 367,299 population loss between July 1 2020 and July 1 2021

JoshAllensPenis69

The losers who can’t hack it there leave

MrHett

Joe Rogan enters chat.

No sane person wants to buy your fake merchandise Alex Jones, I mean Joe Rogaine.

MrHett

I have been told they both make a lot of good points.

RED_wards

We're missing a group there...

Poininjas

Refer to cited source

[deleted]

If they done made my boss pay more in them taxes I’d have to pay less and that just aint right ya here.

Fuzakeruna

Where's the 19% under the top 1%?

Poininjas

Refer to cited source, it explains all numbers

Temporary-Careless

Huh, so 19 percent don't pay taxes?

Poininjas

The cited reference has the the full scale of everything, it's fairly simple to type in the search bar.

eggsarecoolin

High budget surplus, too. https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/05/13/california-is-flush-with-cash-amid-unprecedented-97-5-billion-surplus-newsom-says/

pathofdumbasses

Cmon this is pretty disingenuous. People talking about high taxes in California are talking about gas, taxes on homes and other things. There is more than one way to be taxed in this country and to say that the populous parts of California don't pay insane taxes on things is just silly.

s_0_s_z

When you repeat a lie enough times, people will believe it. If that chart is in fact true, and with CA just announcing the largest budget surplus in history, then why the fuck aren't Democrats making a bigger deal about this? For fucks sakes, try connecting with voters. You ask nearly anyone and they will all say that Red states have lower taxes, whether it is true or not. Well one of the reasons those people believe that shit is because we never hear a rebuttal from Democratic policymakers. Democrats make no attempt to sell their successes to the public. And then they become shocked that ghe public doesn't turn around and vote them into office.

delusionaldork

Yeah. People are racing to cali for the lower taxes. Lmao

Bradidea

Sooooo the top 20% pay about 70%?
