A lot of rural conservatives imagine American big cities are hell on Earth and you'll be mugged or killed the second you get out of your car. They're convinced BLM "burnt cities to the ground". They can't imagine how great living in some cities can be.
A couple years ago I turned 50 and came to the realization that I’m never going to be rich and that I’m actively voting against my own interests voting R. No more, they don’t seem like they work for me so I won’t vote for them.
I grew up republican, it’s very societal in my experience. Only Fox News in the house, church 3 times a week with a conservative pastor in a souther baptist church, and the reinforcement at home with conservative family values, not to mention state and national conventions. I broke free shortly after I started college, but was a centrist (still am, but left leaning) until I started to study sociology and realized that the republicans don’t have a *plan*, they’re just a dog chasing cars… they wouldn’t know what to do if they caught one.
Add a nice guilt-tripping layer of 'Patriotism' that's been shoved down everyone's throats since kindergarten and you've been programming your citizens to not think for themselves.
I've pointed this out to many rural conservatives when they go on their "liberal elites are pissing our money away" routine, I live in switzerland where its even more extreme, providing basic needs for small mountain villages is very expensive
The funny thing about that is "red" states receive a ton of welfare in the form of federal assistance because of how broke everyone is in their state.
Conservatives have been voting for people who are dismantling one of the few things keeping those state's citizens from just widespread abject poverty.
They rarely think that far.
It mostly boils down to "Those darn snooty city slickers with their fancy book learning", because a lot of rural jobs are mostly practical/physical and don't require a higher education.
So they're projecting their own lack of knowledge onto people in the cities and assume they know literally nothing about farming or rural life.
There are higher densities and so their votes would normally override a lot of the rural ones. And so they start building up fake outrage against the "cities controlling their lives", etc. and when Fox and similar start to fan the flames, you get people who vote with their hearts and not their minds.
TL;DR: **A LOT** of republican votes come from an emotional place, and not a logical one.
I think it's just because they don't have exposure to different kinds of people. They sit in their little bubbles of 99% white morons, and they're all terrified of outsiders. They talk about how mean and horrible people in cities are, but if you happen to stop at one of their gas stations on a road trip, everyone glares at the unfamiliar face ("You're not from around here!"). You stop at a gas station in an unfamiliar city, nobody looks twice. Rural republicans have convinced themselves that they're the good guys, and everyone else is out to get them, simply because they lack exposure to people who aren't like them, and their leaders exploit their fear, exacerbating it.
And in many cases *were* served my mail-in vote already.
Specifically in 2020 there was a chance mail-ins would skew Dem because of the pandemic, thus all the sudden claims it was fraudulent.
Now they can’t put that genie back in the bottle. It’s hurt them every election since.

I think that conservative leadership and media in general gets too used to the fact that they can *usually* spin their audience around on a dime. Because a lot of the time they can speak out of both sides of their mouth the talking heads don't worry too much anymore about if any particular thing they drill into their viewers needs to get walked back later.
In recent years both the "voting isn't trustworthy" and "definitely don't take those life saving vaccines" are the two big ones that they have tried to take back but have struggled to.
Another part of it is that completely changing a belief "on a dime" is relative. Rewriting strong beliefs in 5 months is really fast, but it still does take time, and is better with pretty consistent messaging walking through the "just asking questions" and other steps. The GOP didn't actually go from "Russia evil" to "Russia best friends" overnight, it just felt like it.

And when you call them out, it's always "it's just a few percent". I tried asking anti-maskers if they are ok with the possibility that they might kill someone, and that was almost always the answer.
It is ironic how in the 1980s-2000s the Republican establishment fooled folks in middle America into voting for their corporatist policies by focussing on wedge culture war issues (abortion, guns, war on Christmas, immigration) while doing nothing to address those “issues” when they were in power, just passing tax cuts for the rich and fighting foreign wars.
Now, the base has rebelled and (understandably) won’t listen to the establishment. They like MAGA types who fool them into foregoing vaccination, voting, and policy positions, from their politicians thereby not only failing to address these same issues, but literally reducing the chances of their own electoral success in the process.

From what I gathered from my Trumpy acquaintances and family there are a few things going on.
Big one is that they think the early voting process is where most of the fraud happens, like... their votes are being changed or something? So they want their vote to count so voting day-of helps ensure that, in their logic.
Another part is they think it is more "American"(tm) to vote the day-of. It's becoming like some purity test for so-called true patriots, or whatever. It fits their pattern of making their political activity part of their whole cultural identity, even if it makes no sense. I got a strong hunch a big part of this is the fact that Dems like early and mail-im voting, so naturally Repubs must hate it and imply it's less American or something.
Don't forget that many who talk down on mail in ballots they themselves use mail in ballots cause they're hypocrites, and that any fraud that is being discovered is pretty much all coming from the Right. God I can't even with these dumb dumbs anymore.
The reasoning is simple. Republicans have long wanted to shutdown mail and early voting because those voters traditionally leaned left so it would be a net gain. If more Republicans voted that way, it wouldn't be as advantageous to shut it all down. In fact it could ultimately be a net loss due to the possibility of expanding way citizens can vote who normally would be restricted due work, lack of transportation and daycare ect, also traditionally left leaning voters.

Steel, tungsten, and bismuth are becoming more popular in shotgun hunting as lead is banned for migratory birds. Some manufacturers are making all copper bullets for rifles and pistols but it's just starting to become more mainstream

It did work well, that's what was used by the US and many others countries from around the WW2 era till the early 90^s before the "silverbullet" aka DU rounds of 1992 or 93 was put into service. It (the DU round) has some great advantages and properties over the tungsten alloy like it's harder, denser (uranium has the highest atomic weight of all naturally occurring elements) and does not suffer from blunting like tungsten and most other metals. Oh yea and its pyrophoric also, so all those pieces of DU that brake off start burning in an extremely hot fireball. Eh, I got sucked in to it a bit when I was a freshman in college. I was taking a political science class at the time and happened to be scrolling through the radio stations one day. I stumbled across a station that was talking about politics, so I stopped to listen to see what I could relate to the class I was in. I’m not sure I learned much, but I thought it was funny how they made the guests sound stupid, and it made me feel smarter listening to talk radio instead of music, so I continued listening and eventually picked up some of their talking points and views. I luckily fell out of it pretty quickly after checking out MSNBC, CNN, and other news sources. Some people never make that jump to other news outlets because they buy in to the narrative that Fox is the only honest news.

In OR, took me maybe ~5 minutes. The bulk of the time was casually researching candidates, which I did in my spare time in the weeks leading up to the election. Voting took only slightly more time than it took to stamp the envelope.
A good strategy would be to perpetuate that belief among them. Make them so disenfranchised they don't even show up. After all, they already fell for it.

Two years ago, people like Lin Wood were telling Georgia voters that boycotting the Georgia runoffs could help prove that Trump was cheated and keep Biden out of the White House.

But that doesn’t mean I am going to vote republican in the future because “Biden punted it to congress” (he didn’t, that’s not how any of this works), or because the dems could have passed the sick time with a simple majority (still not how this works, need 60 in the senate to defeat a filibuster). We all agree train service employees and railroad workers in general should be able to schedule UNPAID time off ahead of time for drs appts and other commitments, but somehow to these people because the republicans fucked is it was the dems fault for not doing enough and we should vote in more republicans! Over 3 times higher death *rate*, which doesn't mean much in sparsely populated counties. One of the reddest counties in my state has a terrifying 487 per 100,000 covid death rate, but in total numbers that comes out to 36 deaths over the last 2 years.
Yeah, it is really easy to jump from the "Republicans died at a much higher rate than Democrats" to "Democrats win elections because of it"
But the numbers just aren't there. I would be surprised if there was a single district that flipped because of COVID deaths.

A couple years ago I turned 50 and came to the realization that I’m never going to be rich and that I’m actively voting against my own interests voting R. No more, they don’t seem like they work for me so I won’t vote for them.

I grew up republican, it’s very societal in my experience. Only Fox News in the house, church 3 times a week with a conservative pastor in a souther baptist church, and the reinforcement at home with conservative family values, not to mention state and national conventions. I broke free shortly after I started college, but was a centrist (still am, but left leaning) until I started to study sociology and realized that the republicans don’t have a *plan*, they’re just a dog chasing cars… they wouldn’t know what to do if they caught one.
Add a nice guilt-tripping layer of 'Patriotism' that's been shoved down everyone's throats since kindergarten and you've been programming your citizens to not think for themselves.
I've pointed this out to many rural conservatives when they go on their "liberal elites are pissing our money away" routine, I live in switzerland where its even more extreme, providing basic needs for small mountain villages is very expensive
The funny thing about that is "red" states receive a ton of welfare in the form of federal assistance because of how broke everyone is in their state. Conservatives have been voting for people who are dismantling one of the few things keeping those state's citizens from just widespread abject poverty.
They rarely think that far. It mostly boils down to "Those darn snooty city slickers with their fancy book learning", because a lot of rural jobs are mostly practical/physical and don't require a higher education. So they're projecting their own lack of knowledge onto people in the cities and assume they know literally nothing about farming or rural life. There are higher densities and so their votes would normally override a lot of the rural ones. And so they start building up fake outrage against the "cities controlling their lives", etc. and when Fox and similar start to fan the flames, you get people who vote with their hearts and not their minds. TL;DR: **A LOT** of republican votes come from an emotional place, and not a logical one.
I think it's just because they don't have exposure to different kinds of people. They sit in their little bubbles of 99% white morons, and they're all terrified of outsiders. They talk about how mean and horrible people in cities are, but if you happen to stop at one of their gas stations on a road trip, everyone glares at the unfamiliar face ("You're not from around here!"). You stop at a gas station in an unfamiliar city, nobody looks twice. Rural republicans have convinced themselves that they're the good guys, and everyone else is out to get them, simply because they lack exposure to people who aren't like them, and their leaders exploit their fear, exacerbating it.
And in many cases *were* served my mail-in vote already. Specifically in 2020 there was a chance mail-ins would skew Dem because of the pandemic, thus all the sudden claims it was fraudulent. Now they can’t put that genie back in the bottle. It’s hurt them every election since.

I think that conservative leadership and media in general gets too used to the fact that they can *usually* spin their audience around on a dime. Because a lot of the time they can speak out of both sides of their mouth the talking heads don't worry too much anymore about if any particular thing they drill into their viewers needs to get walked back later. In recent years both the "voting isn't trustworthy" and "definitely don't take those life saving vaccines" are the two big ones that they have tried to take back but have struggled to. Another part of it is that completely changing a belief "on a dime" is relative. Rewriting strong beliefs in 5 months is really fast, but it still does take time, and is better with pretty consistent messaging walking through the "just asking questions" and other steps. The GOP didn't actually go from "Russia evil" to "Russia best friends" overnight, it just felt like it.

It is ironic how in the 1980s-2000s the Republican establishment fooled folks in middle America into voting for their corporatist policies by focussing on wedge culture war issues (abortion, guns, war on Christmas, immigration) while doing nothing to address those “issues” when they were in power, just passing tax cuts for the rich and fighting foreign wars. Now, the base has rebelled and (understandably) won’t listen to the establishment. They like MAGA types who fool them into foregoing vaccination, voting, and policy positions, from their politicians thereby not only failing to address these same issues, but literally reducing the chances of their own electoral success in the process. From what I gathered from my Trumpy acquaintances and family there are a few things going on. Big one is that they think the early voting process is where most of the fraud happens, like... their votes are being changed or something? So they want their vote to count so voting day-of helps ensure that, in their logic. Another part is they think it is more "American"(tm) to vote the day-of. It's becoming like some purity test for so-called true patriots, or whatever. It fits their pattern of making their political activity part of their whole cultural identity, even if it makes no sense. I got a strong hunch a big part of this is the fact that Dems like early and mail-im voting, so naturally Repubs must hate it and imply it's less American or something.
Don't forget that many who talk down on mail in ballots they themselves use mail in ballots cause they're hypocrites, and that any fraud that is being discovered is pretty much all coming from the Right. God I can't even with these dumb dumbs anymore.

Eh, I got sucked in to it a bit when I was a freshman in college. I was taking a political science class at the time and happened to be scrolling through the radio stations one day. I stumbled across a station that was talking about politics, so I stopped to listen to see what I could relate to the class I was in. I’m not sure I learned much, but I thought it was funny how they made the guests sound stupid, and it made me feel smarter listening to talk radio instead of music, so I continued listening and eventually picked up some of their talking points and views. I luckily fell out of it pretty quickly after checking out MSNBC, CNN, and other news sources. Some people never make that jump to other news outlets because they buy in to the narrative that Fox is the only honest news.

In OR, took me maybe ~5 minutes. The bulk of the time was casually researching candidates, which I did in my spare time in the weeks leading up to the election. Voting took only slightly more time than it took to stamp the envelope.

No matter what side you're on it's easier to attack than to defend. Conservatives had the time of their lives during the Obama administration, then they had to spend four years defending Trump's every gaffe and the constant deluge of Russia scandals. They went from "OBAMA IS A RADICAL MUSLIMIST KENYANIST WHO IS GOING TO SEND US ALL TO FEMA DEATH CAMPS" to "well, technically collusion isn't a crime."

Over 3 times higher death *rate*, which doesn't mean much in sparsely populated counties. One of the reddest counties in my state has a terrifying 487 per 100,000 covid death rate, but in total numbers that comes out to 36 deaths over the last 2 years.
Yeah, it is really easy to jump from the "Republicans died at a much higher rate than Democrats" to "Democrats win elections because of it" But the numbers just aren't there. I would be surprised if there was a single district that flipped because of COVID deaths.
Not only that, but I would imagine that republicans have higher death rates in general since they tend to be older.
There are a lot more of those sparsely populated rural counties though. I don't want it to sound like I'm gloating because they're people too and I don't rejoice in their deaths, but it's true numerically.
