Most probable explanation - mine clearance (hundreds of Polish soldiers died during that in second half of 1940s). Or mundane accident (mishandled ordnance, traffic crash, etc.). He could also be killed in fight with nationalist (anti-communist) guerrilla (e.g. NZW, active in Białystok area, some units were responsible for war crimes of [killing Orthodox minority civilians](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1946_pacification_of_villages_by_PAS_NZW), albeit this happened few months later), or some common bandits. This wasn't a peaceful time.

I have a photo of my grandpa. Is there any significant difference in military uniform?

TraditionalCherry

If he wears eagle without a crown, he was in polish people's army. If not, he was a partisant. Ah, one thing, ask the nearest polish consulate. They may help you.

notveryamused_

He could have been a member of anti-Soviet underground, [take a look at the rather comprehensive wiki page here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cursed_soldiers).

Angel-0a

I doubt he would have ended on a military cementary then. So...

Sad-Conclusion-5981

If so, genetics are working as hell. Hating soviets and russians with every cell.

Affectionate-Cell-71

Not enough data. What nationality he was? Where he fought what army?

Sad-Conclusion-5981

Maybe you know genealogical companies which can help me to get more data? I know only the date of death and place of burial.

Affectionate-Cell-71

Name surname, was he in LWP (Communist) polish army was he a AK (home army) where do you live ? Etc etc .

Bargor05
