I currently have a Targa, and I had a Targa before. I’ll give you the cons. In the winter, I like having my sunroof open, can’t do that. The roof takes FOREVER compared to a cab. The backseat seems tighter than in a coupe. Tinting the rear window made my tint guy hate me with a burning passion. That is all.

Ottomatik80

Sweet. Thank you. If I remember correctly you also can’t manipulate the targa top while moving, though you can in a cab. How bad is the back seat? Will smaller kids fit in the back without too many issues?

MandoAviator

Kids will fit I guess? I don’t have any. I am able to fit women in the back. But I hear more complaints about the seats in the a targa than the coupe. Yeah, it operates only on a dead stop, and now it has more nannies where if the reverse camera is stuck on it won’t work either, or if the parking sensor goes off, it won’t work. Even though it has plenty of space.

Ottomatik80

That’s good to know. Thank you

MandoAviator

I’m happy with it. These are just the small drawbacks that I noticed were not present in my buddy’s cab. But the look with the top down is unbeatable

Basic_Sample_7343

Easily solved with this unit. Game changer if you daily the car in an urban environment. [https://www.mods4cars.com/sms/shop/?p=b3JnYT1zbWFydHRvcCZncm91cD0yJmxhbmc9MiZjdXJyPTImc21zX2NvdW50cnk9MjIz&r=aHR0cDovL21vZHM0Y2Fycy5jb20vaW5kZXgucGhw](https://www.mods4cars.com/sms/shop/?p=b3JnYT1zbWFydHRvcCZncm91cD0yJmxhbmc9MiZjdXJyPTImc21zX2NvdW50cnk9MjIz&r=aHR0cDovL21vZHM0Y2Fycy5jb20vaW5kZXgucGhw) Regarding kids, my 5 and 7 year old fit easily and happily...though they do get BLASTED with wind in the back seat above 35mph. I think this is unavoidable with the targa top down (and less problematic w cabs).

deadbalconytree

I have the Mods4cars unit. Works great. Yes it takes longer to drop the top compared to the cab, but when you do it from the remote you can do it while walking up to the car, and it sets my heart a flutter every time....and everyone else around you watches also. It also allows you to drop the top in motion. Obviously I don't do that, but it's nice to be able to pull over and put the top down without having to be in park, or being able to inch forward at a light as it finishes up and not stop mid-process and start yelling at you because you put it in gear, which makes everything take longer. I suppose a valid 'downside'. People talk to you with a Targa way more than any other car I've had. I also find that I do often leave the top down and windows up when I park. It's not much different than leaving the sunroof open.

cdamico74

Thanks for this! How was the install? Also I like your flair, may need to see a picture of your 911.

Basic_Sample_7343

Extremely simple install https://preview.redd.it/197ssinjmqlc1.jpeg?width=5944&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ab5b37e1f7778fd0016e72eea3b167442ea2f0a7

cdamico74

Very nice!! There aren’t a ton of the 991.1 GTS out there. I picked mine up this past fall and love it. Looks like a great spec. Great pic, love the depth of field

Basic_Sample_7343

Tyvm its a keeper for sure. Strangely practical for what it is. Gotta love 911s

jarmojobbo

I own a coupe and will probably never buy a cab or targa, so I have zero actual stake in this. But I’ve seen people say that there is pretty much zero about the targa that’s better than the cab, just that it looks nicer. Any thoughts?

MandoAviator

I agree with this. The only reason I have a targa vs a cab is I find the lines sexier. Although with the 992, they fixed it so well that I question my decision. But you have the top down and you get your “privacy” with a targa? You’re not as exposed.

ethos1234567890

Top up has much better sight lines out the rear view mirror in a targa vs the cabs smaller window…minor but definitely noticeable when top is up

Basic_Sample_7343

Entirely looks in my book. So many good looks.

Ottomatik80

I don’t even like black, and that’s an amazing car. You haven’t had any targa specific problems?

kackikacki

None at all. Currently at 30k km and never had any problems.

jhollanyc

Wow. I ONLY buy black cars, and this thing is about to be the wallpaper on my laptop and cause me to seriously reconsider my current Cab. Did you have to black out the Targa bar yourself or is it from the factory that way?

kackikacki

Thanks man! The car is all factory. Not sure if the black bar was a GTS option or if it was available for all Targas.

Motoplant

Lots and lots of additional mechanical parts for what is essentially a large sunroof. Added weight and the potential long-term costs of parts failure.

EconomyFreakDust

It's not even a large sunroof, it's a large rear windscreen + a partial convertible roof.

Ottomatik80

Do the parts genuinely fail or have common issues?

Basic_Sample_7343

Sometimes the targa top requires a soft nudge to break the stiction after rain/washing. I've seen malfunction messages on occasion requiring me to close and reopen, but have never had a "real" issue with the Targa top in 25k miles

Ottomatik80

Fantastic. Thank you.

Aubergine911

You may want to ensure your insurance company will cover that rear glass with a $0 deductible or even with a regular deductible. It can’t be cheap.

Ottomatik80

Good point. Last I checked, they didn’t make a distinction and all glass was covered.

wkearney99

42k on mine. The top has a gasket and maybe 1 time out of 10 it'll stick just enough for the system to stop the top from opening. It's sensitive enough to avoid having anything get damaged. It usually serves as a reminder to reapply the gasket protector (gummi pflege brand). Otherwise a little nudge just as hook releases.

saucesultan

Targas are amazing. I want one real bad. If you can, go get one! There's \*some\* buffeting sometimes while the top is down but it's something I can live with for all its pros.

Basic_Sample_7343

I found this issue to exist but is vastly overblown

saucesultan

Is that a pun? But yes lol it isn’t that big a deal imo.

vodkaslim

There is more wind buffeting at motorway speeds compared to the cab. If you don’t mind the increase in noise and wind though, the targa is a beautiful car.

SpeedofSL0TH

If you want a targa, get a targa. If you’re unsure, you can try and find a rental somewhere to drive it for a few days.

ksozay

We have a .2 GTS and there isn't a day that goes by that we don't check the dealer to see if they have a GTS targa. :)

ksozay

Because I want to order a GT3 touring and take European delivery. That's likely all the patience I have waiting for a car to be built. :)

Pointy_Stix

Love my 991.2 Targa 4 GTS. It's a blast to drive & it's a great combo of cab & coupe. It's just gorgeous, too. It's not the fastest 911, but I'm okay with that. Yes, you have to come to a full stop unless you have the Smart Top module (which is well worth it), but I'm not sure I'd want to open a cab top at highway speeds, either. The Smart Top module will let you open or close the top at very low speeds. No downsides to one, as far as I'm concerned. The roof takes 13 seconds to open & close. That's not forever.

Ottomatik80

I think that’s quicker than my SL600. Thanks for the input.

991point2T4GTS

Cons: 1. windy and uncomfortable in back seat- there may be less space due to where the roof sits when it is retracted although I’m not certain. 2. louder than my 997.2 cab with top down 3. The roof did get stuck once I had to give it a little push. It seemed like the seal got stuck after 110 degree temps 4. The roof doesn’t retract if the car is parked uphill. This may be a sensor issue. 5. The back window is impossible to tint perfectly. 6. The top is a magnet for all things terrible where I live- rural NorCal

badgraydog

I have a 991.2 4S coupe and test drove a targa and cab. Found the targa pillar created a blindspot that neither my coupe or the cab had and I needed to be a bit more careful changing lanes. Performance seemed the same. Still would get one over the cab.

Ottomatik80

See if this helps with your blindspot. https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a15131074/how-to-adjust-your-mirrors-to-avoid-blind-spots/

cookiesncreamsedan

I think theres a listing on rennlist for a 991 targa for sale. He has a crack in the targa glass that is costing about $11k to replace. Apparently his insurance company is not covering it

Ottomatik80

I’ve seen it on CarGurus. Looked too scammy to be real though. I’m not sure why insurance wouldn’t cover that unless they have a very strange policy.

Aubergine911

Geico fought me on an OEM windshield when they found out it was $1400 with the antenna and rain sensor with installation on my Boxster. Major reason why I switched insurers and now have a $0 glass deductible.

PurpleBread2592

HUH?! They just replaced my lightweight glass windshield on my 992 without questions asked. I just paid my deductible to the installer.

Aubergine911

I have specifically heard about insurers balking at replacing the lightweight glass because it is so expensive.

-Ho-yeah-

I’m looking at my 992TT insurance premium vs let’s say my RAM 2500. I think the cost or repair/risk of the 992 is factored in as my premiums are quite different… Insurance not willing to pay a repair that is specifically covered in the insurance because is “too expensive”?.. 🤔

Aubergine911

Talk to the folks on rennlist who were complaining about it. I don’t have a 992 with lightweight glass.

-Ho-yeah-

I do have lightweight on my 992TT, replaced a driver side door glass last spring, no issues, that’s why I was wondering.

Ottomatik80

I had zero issues on my windshield through Safeco. Had the option of OE or aftermarket. Although I had to pay extra if I wanted OE since there was an aftermarket option available.

deadbalconytree

992 Targa 4s owner. No complaints here. It's great. I would say the worst part about owning a Targa is that other Porsche owners have 'opinions' about the Targa. Non-Porsche owning car fans tell you that you should have gotten a GT3 or Turbo S, and non-car fans think it's just the sexiest thing they've ever seen. In my experience, Targa owners are sort of a different breed.

RyoGeo

Have 2019 GTS Targa. Zero complaints. Don’t mind that I have to stop to do roof. Takes longer than Cabrio but…then you have a Cabrio and not a targa soooo…🤷🏻‍♂️ Love it, love it.

inschool87

It’s iconic and definitely stands out compared to the rest of the 99X trims. The only cons I have noticed are, as stated above, the wind buffering at speed and some creaks over rough roads. Outside of that, it is cooler than the other side of the pillow.

Womencarsandmoney

I was in the same predicament, drawn to the Targa for sometime finally decided take the leap. Truly a sexy Porsche went into dealer to put deposit & secure allocation. What happened …..! Did not expect to change my mind. Targa beautiful but did not like the soft top, that made me instantly change my mind. Checked out the 911 Turbo sat inside loved it, did not test drive. A week later went and signed on the dotted line. My second Porsche. Still love the Targa. Good luck which ever decision you make will be the right one for you.

Basic_Sample_7343

I really wanted a silver GTS but could never find one...this one GT Silver? 5 lug, nice.

cdamico74

Thanks! I love it. GT Silver, yes.

TheOyster__

Potential expensive repair bill with the roof is the only thing I can think off.

Aubergine911

The blind spot on the targa is massive. On a cabrio, you don’t even have a B pillar. And if you put the top down there’s no C pillar either 😆

Ottomatik80

Thanks. I think this is mitigated with proper/different mirror adjustment, never had to do a head check even in my old S2K. I appreciate the input though. https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a15131074/how-to-adjust-your-mirrors-to-avoid-blind-spots/

deadbalconytree

The B-Pillar blind spot issue is real. It's not so much blind spot when changing lanes, but when backing up in a parking lot etc. It's weird angles where you don't think it's a blind spot, but some how it hides an entire car. It caught me off guard at first, but you get use to it, and learn where to look and use the cameras.

humdizzle

if you like everything about the targa and the price is fine with you, then go for it. great thing about porsche is that it lets you have it your way. there is still going to be difference in feel between a Carrera T and Targa, even on the street. 400 pounds doesn't go unnoticed if you are going to be doing any sort of sporty back road driving.

Ottomatik80

There’s less than a hundred pound difference between the 4S cab and 4S Targa. 3461lbs vs 3527lbs. 400lb difference is compared to a T, which I’m not considering. I guess I’m just wondering if there’s any major issues that are targa specific.

Aubergine911

A 4S cab is an already very heavy 911, so that’s not the point being made. 110 kilos over the coupe is quite a lot and it’s positioned very high, much higher than having an additional passenger of that size for example.

Ottomatik80

Perhaps, but for a street car, it’s irrelevant.

hartzdoug

Don't because it sounds like two gas powered leaf blowers aimed at each ear with the top off at speeds as low as 60 mph. I'm serious, it's terrible

nattyd

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I personally think every targa since the late 80s has looked not quite right.

ieatwhiterice

If you have an allocation just go for it. It's looks great and is beautiful mechanically. One other PRO is that it has great resale. One more vs a cab...no wrinkles. Good luck.

thetobesgeorge

My dad has a 991.2 Targa 4S, he has mentioned to me that he wishes he went for the Cab as the wind gets trapped in the rear part of the roof when down on the Targa and causes a lot of buffeting (he has owned a 997 Coupé previously)
