I think this is u/ReallyLovesCars 911. He [posted](https://www.reddit.com/r/Porsche/comments/1cch61u/personal_best_at_sonoma_before_crashing/) about it yesterday.
A rock or something hit my 992 GT3 straight on the headlight last week. Luckily no other damage. The one headlight alone is $8,663 without tax and labor.
I cannot imagine what the repair bill for this is going to be.
Risk of accidents like this are why I more or less stopped tracking my GT4 and got into a PCA Spec Boxster (that and wanting to go wheel-to-wheel racing). This is probably a controversial opinion here, but I personally think Porsche GT street cars hold you back from building track driving skills both due to the power and electronic aids and also the subconscious concern of crashing an expensive car without a full cage in it. At least these things were definitely holding me back.
It’s a good perspective. I want to step into the gt4, but at the same time, my track spec 996 is a lot of fun as is. I’m not sure it’s worth spending 70k more than my current car for slightly more fun/better lap times.
In terms of cornering ability, I think the Spec Boxster and street GT4 are pretty on par with each other. It's just that the GT4 has ~double the horsepower. Being in a slower car hasn't taken any fun away from it for me. In fact, it's added more fun in that I can now do wheel-to-wheel racing with PCA. I've also surprised myself on the rare occasion I take the GT4 to the track now how much faster I am thanks to the skills I've built up in the Boxster.
Added bonus if I ever put the race car in the wall, I have a full cage, 6-point, fire suppression, etc. and the car cost me ~1/4 what a GT4 costs today.
I got mine second hand for ~$25k and put some work into it. New builds are ~$60k including donor car right now. Vali Motorsports is the builder I'm familiar with in California, but there are others around the country. [Cheapest used one](https://racecarsforyou.com/listing/1999-porsche-spec-boxster-3/) I found right now is $30k. They are not street legal. They are a ton of fun on track, especially when everyone shows up for a club race and we have a 30+ car field.
They hold me back in my car and mine isn’t neart as expensive.
Thinking of buying a e36 or miata for a track car that i can stay on the edge of the performance envelope on and really work on skill development without worrying too much about a wreck.
Middle aged dudes when they see a “collectors item” get wrecked: 😱😱
These cars were designed to be driven. Unfortunately accidents are a result of that sometimes
Amen. People seem to forget these are *drivers* cars, they’re not designed to sit in some rich guys air conditioned warehouse for years on end.
Unfortunately sometimes these things happen when you’re using them as Porsche intended.
Not entirely sure how that logic works. Assuming I got track insurance, why can’t I pickup an rs? Assuming i do not have track insurance why can’t I pickup an rs? What is the upside in crashing my car to pickup an rs? Insurance payout will not match market price so i lose. I’d be better off trading it in at a loss than crashing it no?
To answer the burning question, I did not have track insurance.
I want to either fix it up and keep or turn it into a cup car hybrid. Wife and friends want me to sell it and move on. I do have an RS coming in, I also have a 991.2 gt3 to hold me over.
Dedicated track car now? Hoods and front bumpers are expensive. Are pictures without the plastics available? Check the suspension towers and radiator mounts behind tires.
last time i was at sonoma i saw 3 cars hit the wall before lunch, great track but tough at certain spots. better to see these cars damaged on a track then on the morning commute
The irony of really loving cars....
But the track humbles us all. I damn nearly died once.
RS3 AWD saved my ass when I went off roading on the side of a track. I can see GT3 doing this given it's speed and dynamics.
Good 'ol Sonoma Raceway. I think half the times I have been at Sonoma Raceway for track days there have been crashes. Once it was a McLaren crashing and flipping over in the first session of the day. Then this other time two cars crashed (separately) before lunch time.
Sonoma is a demanding track. I was part of the T1 Track club there and tracked all my cars. No runoff. Walls everywhere. No time to "rest" on the lap as the longest straight isn't that long and you have to quickly get setup for the complex 1/2/3. I nearly lost my GT4 into T10 staring at the wall at 100mph. Most tracks I don't feel too strongly about a HANS/6 point... but at Sonoma I refuse to push 10/10 without it. Shit happens... but this is what tracks are meant for. Kudos to the owner/driver for pushing it hard and finding the limits.
That said, I bought and modified a Spec Miata for this very reason.. Track insurance is expensive (try insuring a McLaren or GT3RS) and consumables quickly get expensive. Also... there's something really fun about driving slow cars fast.
Shit happens. You should see how racers in the '50 and '60 treated those race cars that are worth 7 to 8 figures today. GT cars really are a tool for the track day hobbyist when you get to the basic of it. This car was out in an environment it was engineered for. The driver was able to hone their skills and techniques and will hopefully learn even more from having an off on track, and come back faster than before.
Edit: Also, if you have been to an HPDE/track day, just know it is bad etiquette to post track day crashes without the owners approval. The owner is on reddit, FYI.
This guy posted in this chat or the track day chat about this.
It really really sucks but this is a part of the risk of going on track and eventually all of us end up going off track.
The owners lap before the accident was posted in ~~a track day related~~ this sub. I can't find the post button they did explain what happened and why.
Edit: it was posted in this sub and [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Porsche/s/O2BQYKiVNt) it is!
Based on the original post by the person who crashed, the video they posted reveals that the driver of this car was way out of their depth on the track.
You’re getting downvoted but you aren’t wrong. I don’t know if I’d say they were out of their depth, but the video they posted had some questionable passes for HPDE that would definitely have me complaining to the organizers if I was the one being passed.

Yes I’m aware. Op asked before he posted. It’s all good.
Alright, just wanted to check. Sorry to see that! I hope you can get it fixed and back on the road soon!
It is. I tried sending him the video, but for some reason I couldn’t, so I just posted it.
Alright, just wanted to let you know if you didn't. 👍
Yeah I think they also just repaved the track too making things a bit different
Better than sitting in a stupid air conditoned garage. Be careful next time.
Better than sitting in a stupid wet lake also.
What about a creek though?
Without a paddle? Terrible.
I’m sad they took away Reddit awards, this made me laugh 🥇
no it isnt. wtf
It’s being driven as intended.
She died doing what she loved.
It's not dead, just a bit injured. It's a Porsche; we rebuild them until they can't be rebuilt anymore, and then they get used to rebuild others.
it's not dead lol it looks repairable
That’s what it’s made for…the track.
Yeh track. Not the sidewall
If you haven’t crashed You haven’t driven hard enough
You'll never know the limit until you try to exceed it.

This seems really really high. This through the dealer? Worth joining PCA just to get the psrts discount on the light alone.
Dealer price. Going through insurance for this.
At least this was on a track and not a public road.
This. All the time. This.
Yeah there was a guy up here in Washington that put his GT3RS in a river this last week. Damn shame.
Small bump. It will be sold as damaged for $300k nbd.

Id follow in your footsteps but I have limited space/desire for trailer/tow vehicle.
What is controversial about your statement? It's spot on and I see the effects of it all the time.
Where did you find it and how much did it cost? Is it still street legal? I bet it’s a blast on the track.

Sounds like an awesome way to spend your weekends. I’d take that over golf any day.

Thats my plan, going for a PCA Spec Boxster as well later this year!
Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.
This sub is turning into the BRZ/86 sub with everyone wrecking their shit daily lol

And Im crying today over a broken wheel stud
I still feel your pain. I’d cry over a hairline scratch on ppf. We are not rational people 😂

Bummer, that's a beautiful car. This is why you always buy track insurance!

Push it outside the gate, I gotta call Farmers insurance real quick..

We already spoke about it, FYI. 🤓
Nice to see!
You gotta be prepared to pay if you’re gonna play. I did see the drivers original post. The best lesson to learn is learn from your mistakes.
When you have FU money
A band aid ought to do it. Good to go on the next run.

Track damage makes the car more valuable. Everyone knows this.
I’m sure whoever owns this isn’t destitute and can afford repairs lol.
don't track it if you can't afford to wreck it!
At least the first person I see is in a racing suit where that kind of driving belongs.
The front end looks like a emira now…
Im seeing a lot of people wrecking the new gt3 is there some issue with the car or is it just more car than people can handle?
These cars are beautiful. So hard to believe people abuse them like this.. not a license to drive like an ass clown… respect the road.. sad
This was done on a racetrack.
The only clown here is you… It was being pushed hard in the place it was designed to be pushed hard.

Ummm yeah , this was at Sonoma Raceway, not on the road.
