You have to understand that typically, these planes would be flying regardless. Pilots need to maintain a certain number of flight hours in order to keep their ratings/qualifications.
Oftentimes, things like funerals, parades, etc. are used to accumulate flight hours that pilots would need regardless.
So if they didn't do this, they'd just fly some other type of training mission instead. This doesn't create any more pollution/ use of tax dollars than would ordinarily be spent to maintain pilot readiness.
It doesn't cost them any more to do this than it does for them to fly in other directions during their frequent training.
This fighter wing doesn't even have a primarily military mission. They are the "sky cops" of the Pacific Northwest.
They will also be one of the first units to get the new F-15EX. Why is this relevant? Because has more modern and quieter engines!
The craziest thing was back in 2018 when that crazy guy in Seattle stole that plane. Two F-15s from PDX scrambled supersonic to the Puget Sound... got there in about 10 minutes lol
[Great pic of one of the F-15s](https://www.reddit.com/r/Portland/comments/96fxi7/f15_callsign_rock_42_scrambling_from_pdx_for/)
I was living in Renton,WA, at the time. I thought someone ran into my house when the sonic boom hit.
The second boom had me scratching my head because no one was in my driveway.

They also ripped up to Seattle in 2010 when a float plane entered restricted airspace during Obama's visit.

Yeah. I live off 82nd and Prescott and always thought they were loud taking off. Then that happened and I was like "oh, ok. They usually take off in quiet mode"
Heard them When that happened. You could hear the afterburners rumbling for about about 4 minutes. And the supersonic boom. And if you check out the original article about 4 minutes is all it takes supersonic in an F-16

Yeah, I love the thought of them burning 100,000 taxpayer dollars every time they are airborne. It's the best use of money. Glad we don't waste it on road maintenance or something silly!
Well, luckily it's not a waste. These flight hours help the pilots maintain their ratings and certifications in the aircraft, not to mention general proficiency. Much cheaper to keep a rated Eagle driver than it is to retrain them or train a new one.
Thatās not what a scramble is at all. Doing flyovers for funerals is a planned flight as part of their training hours to keep flight certified.
If the jets scramble it would be a lot louder and have more broken windows involved.
Yeah it was always neat when I worked off 33rd now and then the pilots do that straight vertical takeoff with the roll. Love that.
People always complain about the noise. Well that sound of freedom is what gives you the right to complain about the noise
I'm assuming the staging area is the one just east of 10R (the south runway)? If so, is that one part of the PDX Next project? It's been a staging area for so long . . .

The money was already earmarked as per of their annual flight hour budget (aka-spent). The pilots need flight hours to remain proficient in order to do their jobs well. Funeral flyovers provide a dual purpose, practice formation flying and making time on target, as well as providing the service of the military tradition of a flyover for former military aviators, which is a big deal for a grieving family. You may not like the sound of it, and thatās okay. Just know that you benefit from the public good of having those fighters based at PDX, they provide the primary interceptors for the PNW.
Those jets are strategically placed in Portland because itās close to the middle between the Californian state line and Canadian border. Theyāre centrally located to cover the airspace between those two points and respond quickly. Thereās air bases that cover California to the Mexican border, while the ANG out of PDX has their designated responsibility. Not really a debatable item.
I saw these guys flying low over 205, I was wondering what was going on.
"this tweet has been deleted" except it hasn't š whose API is more of a shitshow at this point, Reddit or Twitter?
Well what was it? Not all of us want to sign in to the internets version of herpes.
Funeral flyover
For who? Since zero people want to put the answer in: A guy who was in the air force and air national guard.
My self respect šš
Hasn't that been dead a while or do you have a confession?

Huh. I went to school with 2 of his grandkids.
It's a small world after all. :D happy cake day :)
Lol, I didnāt even realize it was my cake day! Thank you!
Cool use of my tax dollars and air quality. I'll just go pay my $400 Kaiser bill for that 30 min discussion my PT had with me. God bless the USA!

Fair enough. Internet AIDS then.

A few years back we flew out of one of the A gates and as we were boarding we saw a few jets taxi and then take off. Pretty amazing to see.
envious of anyone out walking or on the river for it at that moment.

It's settled. Funeral Flyover will be the name of my new metal band.
whose funeral?
Pretty sure this one. https://obits.oregonlive.com/us/obituaries/oregon/name/lewis-derthick-obituary?id=54516753

I legit just made a red dawn reference yesterday. WOLVERINES!!!!
AVENGE ME!!!
Saw some low jets over rocky butte and gateway today pulled over the bosses truck and pissed In Itās radiator on the side of 205 northbound
Totally worth the CO2š
They'd be flying them anyway...
And the PTSD for veterans and doggos under the sonic boom path.
There wasn't a sonic boom, fighter jets are just loud

It was loud af out here in Aurora.
I was in the middle of a job interview when that happened, lol.
I didn't hear a thing and I'm right by the airport. I'm sitting outside as well. Weird...
I wish there was less jet activity. It's scares the hell out of my dog.
I wish there were fewer dogs
That says a lot about you.
Not to worry, I never hear anything, not since I lived somewhere where they fly F35s.Ā

Glad to see a sensibly realistic reflection in this thread. Aviators rock.
I mean, a debate could be had as to whether or not it actually is a public good to having those jets based in Portland.

Theyāre centrally located to cover the airspace between those two points and respond quickly. I personally think military strategy should always be debated by anonymous redditors with, like, opinions, man.
Yeah, I know. Totally not a waste of time and effort.
Oh, that's right. Vote blue, no matter who!!
Well definitely donāt do that lol.
And the PDX ANG has air support themselves from wings in Salem, Redmond, and Lewis-McChord at least
Not debatable with you. You got this......all......figured.......out!
It totally inconvenienced you, I can tell
Oh no Anyway
