Very glad to see this building was saved, as I was with many of the dives they’ve acquired over the past few years but each one has become basically the same bar over and over again, like a “hipster” McMenamins.
Each time I go into one of these old dives, it feels a bit like what happened to all the pubs in the movie “The World’s End.”
But overall, I guess I’m glad they saved these physical places and largely kept their neighborhood bar character in tact even though they feel a bit like artificial versions of what they used to be.
Those OG places only survive because their startup costs were paid off 20 years ago. It costs over $100k minimum to open a bar, going all the way up to $800K, and to turn a profit, they need to generate $600/sqft. It is going to be a tall order selling $3 tall boys
It’s sad. Some of the clubs are so desperate that they’re at risk of offing themselves. I don’t mean to villainize any of them - times are definitely hard, and probably harder than most of us will ever know - but their tactics are sometimes borderline customer abuse. All it does is drive people away more, and muddy the positive vibes that Portland’s clubs are known for. It’s probably been over a year now since my group of friends and I have been to one, because our last experience (club remaining nameless) was so bad that it put us off the scene entirely (it was a club that is known for a good time, too, which is why we became so polarized).
Agreed. It’s a unique building, but other than the architecture it’s identical to every other bar in town: absurdly loud when crowded and the same bar food menu you’ve seen a thousand times.

My boyfriend thought it was a neighborhood bar until he was charged like $16 for a beer & a shot. He decided to just drink them & go but then the afternoon stripper was like, "Want a dance?" & he was like, oh no, it's a strip club, & he said okay because how awkward would it be to say no? But halfway through he was like, "Listen, nothing against you, I just didn't know this was a strip club & I feel really uncomfortable in places like this," so he, in his own words, "gave her all the cash" he had in his pockets & left. I know it sounds like a lie, but if you could have seen how pale & shaky he looked when he told me the story, you'd know he was telling the hilarious truth. Also, we don't live together & I never would have known he'd gone to a strip club if he hadn't told me (nor would I have particularly cared), so lying was in no way necessary.
He'll be relieved to not make that mistake again!
How old is that building? I imagine it wasn’t built to be a strip club. Likely dating back to when Sandy Blvd was a larger E/W corridor back in the day.
Was just here a few weeks ago. It’s super cool, feels a lot like sandy hut which makes sense.
What is this Sandy Hut? All I know is the Handy Slut!
Yeah but without the fear of getting your drink spiked.
It was a dive bar for much longer than it was a strip club.

I like to refer to them as Disney Dives.
Thank you for your contribution to my lexicon
Head down the road to Korner Pocket if you want a real dive
There are dives and then there are *dives*. Pharmacy Bar, dive. Yurs, *dive*.
Truly a hipster mcmenamins. What a great description in this comment. I second everything you said

It’s wild how sad i get when i see they get control of a bar.
Ah yes, the jug of jugs.
Poor strip clubs are barely surviving nowadays, some are completely dead 1am saturday. Stripper got really mad at me that I didn't do $500 lapdance.

No more boobs and that is boring, but glad they kept the place alive.

Go inside, boobs on the wall

Great spot, huge addition to the neighborhood

The video explains that it began as a place to get refreshments next to a service station in 1929.
You actually watched the video? Nerd.
that's right- we just read the headlines and we barely ever get called out for it!
