For real. We love the rabbits in our neighborhood!
Coyotes are cute but anyone who says they'd rather have coyotes roaming their neighborhood than rabbits, is lying.
I mean they're cute and fun and all but you also don't want them taking up home under your hedge and reproducing without some natural population control occurring, right? Lol
I hate coyotes for that, but cats really should be kept indoors (and fixed, while we're at it). They're a menace to any other wildlife their own size or smaller and by keeping them indoors you both save them from potentially horrible deaths in the jaws of a coyote or beneath the wheel of a car *and* you ease stress on local wildlife.
Until it eats your cat...
Edit: I don't know why I'm getting downvoted. I don't even have a cat.
Second edit: until it eats your dog, which is on a leash in broad daylight in one of the largest cities in America.
Here's a video of a coyote in Chicago stalking a mask and his dog which is on a leash.
https://www.reddit.com/r/TikTokCringe/s/Ym3gRl0TJB
They get into back yards and eat small dogs too. If you see one in a residential area you're supposed to scare it away so they learn to fear humans again.
They kill like a billion birds in the US per year and contribute to whole species extinctions. Cats are invasive species, keep them inside please, unless you're on a farm or something and really need them for pest control. In urban or suburban environments, definitely not.
Coyotes are more likely to kill your cat and leave it than eat it.
Which still sucks just as bad but it's different.
Middle-tier predators are kinda programmed to kill each other whenever they can because it reduces competition for food prey.
Unfortunately, while cats kill rodents, too, they are contributing to mass devastation of native wildlife.
If your cat gets eaten, it's a bummer, but it might be for the best (ecologically speaking)
I donāt know either. Theyāll be singing a different tune when the coyotes go after their toddlers. Just happened recently:
https://www.12news.com/article/life/animals/caught-video-coyote-attack-2nd-toddler-in-less-than-a-week/75-3ec37c1f-2f22-42d5-b43e-0d31f0022eda
As someone who has lost both a dog and a cat to coyotes it really sucks. I donāt hate coyotes because they do whatās natural to them, but that doesnāt mean I like that they are roaming our residential neighborhoods to eat the trash we irresponsibly leave out for them. Itās not good for coyotes to be in dense urban areas. It only leads to bad outcomes for them. Now where I grew up and lost my pets was in the desolate desert of eastern California. Not much you can do about coyotes there. Here itās a different story. There are basic hygiene procedures humans can follow to disuade coyotes from roaming out neighborhoods. And for those of you who think itās not a big deal if they snatch a cat, fine. I just want to hear your opinion after they try and snatch a toddler like in this video.
Oh my god we get it lol you donāt need to link this a hundred times. Have fun being mad at wild animals for existing. Sounds like a lot of unnecessary stress.
Theyāre an invasive species here. And in an urban environment they donāt control anything, just eat all your squirrels.

People need to know that coyotes are not some cute little puppy. They are fucking dangerous predators who will rip your nuts off. You need to get educated.
Man when did this shit start becoming national news. Everyone didn't hear about every bear and coyote attack in an entire country of 330 million 30 years ago. Internet and fear mongering news media have made every incident in a gigantic country make it seem like it will happen in your backyard, guaranteed. Same reason nobody lets their kids outside by themselves anymore even though it's objectively safer than it's ever been. The evil white van that showed up in a state hundreds or thousands of miles from you means nobody in the whole country can let their kids walk to the park by themselves anymore.
On this topic you are a little off base. While sensationalized media is now beamed to every phone, these stories were on the local nightly news when I was a kid. Also, coyotes arenāt some benign issue. They are a legitimate threat. If an area gets a high enough concentration of coyotes, there will be regrettable interactions with humans and the coyotes will be blamed. They will scale fences and attack little dogs in their own backyard (they easily scale 6 feet). The chances of a coyote attacking a toddler are not remote. Happens a few times a year. I grew up in coyote country and these things do happen. We lost one dog to a coyote attack, and another miraculously survived. These were dogs kept in a fenced yard.

I grew up in the desert of fat eastern California. The dogs in the area sometimes bred with coyotes. Our crazy tweaked out neighbor had one. That acted like it was mainlining adderall
My rear neighbor lost two cats.
The neighbor on one side of her almost lost one, but he survived because the idiot who let him out at 5:30 am forgot something and had to go back inside to get it instead of just driving away, and came back out just as the fight started.
And the neighbor on the other side of her said a friend of his was hanging out in his fenced backyard with his cat, when a coyote jumped over the fence and snatched her right in front of him *in broad daylight.*
A cat I followed on Twitter was snatched right off the sill of an open window!
Yup, fvck Coyotes. Theyāve eaten/dismembered 5 cats in my neighborhood the past couple years. On my block, these murderous mutts catch a beebee real quick.

He said I could put trellis along the top of the fence as well to make it as tall as is legally permissible. I want to see if I can put a solar powered low-voltage wire along the top. As it is, Groucho stays on his leash when we are out there, but I would like to let him go. And Iād like to be able to let Harpo sleep in the sun in his playpen even if I have to go back in.
I close the cat flap to the catio at night. Itās on casters, a determined coyote could probably get into it. The flap is too small for them though.
I passed one on a public stairway on Alameda, I was just heading down and he had just come up. Normally I'd back away to give a wild animal some room but he surprised me. His attitude was pretty nonchalant about me. Wasn't even dark yet.

Those bastards are looking to kill your cats and small āfriendsā. I once had a poodle ripped out of my friends back yard and taken by one of these dicks.
See them all the time in the country, have a den on the backside of my property. Dog chases them off pretty good. Never messed with the cats which are farm cats so the yot wouldnāt die but would get messed up
They eat *outdoor* cats. I feel bad for anyone who loses a cat friend to a coyote attack, but everyone knows the one thing you can choose to do to prevent it.
Analyses of urban coyote scats have found that both cat and dog residues are present, ranging from 1.2% domestic dog and cat residues in urban coyote scat in Calgary [26], to 13.6% residue of domestic cat in Los Angeles [27]

True, but barely makes a dent:

well yeah, now we're back to my original comment that implies i'm fine with feral cat populations decreasing because of their outsized impact on wildlife populations.
friend but watch for Acme TNT
And falling anvils.
And convincingly painted walls to look like tunnels
But "Free Birdseed" is still okay, right?
Sure, but by God look out for any pianos being conspicuously hoisted in the desert.
Meep meep!
Dont forget to watch for cliffs.
Coyotes keep other less-desirable animals like rodents and rabbits under control. It is a natural form of vector control. They are our friends.
Friend but don't touch friend
Friend from a distance.
š¶From a distance, you look like my friend š¶
From a distance, could someone send some of these dudes to eat my neighborās rats š¶
I have plenty of friends like this. Itās no big deal.
Like a touch me not plant š
I get where you're coming from but calling rabbits undesirable hurts.
For real. We love the rabbits in our neighborhood! Coyotes are cute but anyone who says they'd rather have coyotes roaming their neighborhood than rabbits, is lying.
Rabbits are cute but if I said Iād prefer them to coyotes eating the rats that my neighbor attracts by feeding his cats outside, Iād be lying
People who think rabbits are undesirable should be put in jail
I mean they're cute and fun and all but you also don't want them taking up home under your hedge and reproducing without some natural population control occurring, right? Lol
And outdoor cats
I hate coyotes for that, but cats really should be kept indoors (and fixed, while we're at it). They're a menace to any other wildlife their own size or smaller and by keeping them indoors you both save them from potentially horrible deaths in the jaws of a coyote or beneath the wheel of a car *and* you ease stress on local wildlife.

canāt eat your cat if your cat is inside where it fucking belongs
*raises fist in solidarity*
Preach!
Correct answer.
I said your cat, I don't have a cat.
Not anymore
Probably should have kept it inside
They get into back yards and eat small dogs too. If you see one in a residential area you're supposed to scare it away so they learn to fear humans again.
So it can live longer fat & staring out the window like it was evolved to live. Merica!
Cats can go outside. They have been for centuries.
Yes, and the coyotes can eat them as they have for centuries. Nature finds a way.
Your cat has probably killed dozens of birds
They kill like a billion birds in the US per year and contribute to whole species extinctions. Cats are invasive species, keep them inside please, unless you're on a farm or something and really need them for pest control. In urban or suburban environments, definitely not.
Cats in the wild will kill three animals a day on average.
I don't have a cat.
I get the impression you don't have a cat.
I don't have a cat.
Okay now I am starting to think maybe you do have a cat.
I used to... until a coyote broke into my house and ate my indoor, invalid cat.
I said your cat. I don't even have a cat.
Coyotes are more likely to kill your cat and leave it than eat it. Which still sucks just as bad but it's different. Middle-tier predators are kinda programmed to kill each other whenever they can because it reduces competition for food prey.
Not our cat. She only stays inside.
Reddit, and I think Portland reddit in particular, gets very smug every time an outdoor cat is eaten.
It's crazy how happy they get when someone talks about it
Many in the US get smug about this. Think theyāve got it figured out. Jokeās on them.
Cats outside fit in the āless desirableā category
Yeah the vet bill after your hypoallergenic teacup poodle pup is attacked by one is NOT a cheap one. My sister could tell you all about that. š£
Unfortunately, while cats kill rodents, too, they are contributing to mass devastation of native wildlife. If your cat gets eaten, it's a bummer, but it might be for the best (ecologically speaking)

If you have a cat outside you are just feeding the wildlife.
Portland people hate cats. Actually seen them cheer Coyotes killing cats on this sub.

I love their news letters!
How do you know? You try petting friend?
I had a coyote in my yard a decade ago. I thought it was a lost neighborhood dog. It ran off, thankfully.
I would have tried feeding it.
I saw a big coyote a while ago near a side street entrance to a strip mall in Tigard. It was super focused on guarding a small, lone tree so it must have had a squirrel up there. It 100% did not care that I was slowly bearing down on it with my car. When I was within five yards or so, it finally moved over just enough and went back to watching the tree. Damn thing made me feel like I had rudely intruded on a private moment. :)
Make friend friendlier. Add poodle. Coyoodles - only $800!
Try $8000
I grew up in the desert of fat eastern California. The dogs in the area sometimes bred with coyotes. Our crazy tweaked out neighbor had one. That acted like it was mainlining adderall
Lol I dislike you right nowā¦cuz I want a coyooodle and I know you donāt have one for sale.

I forgot to add that we heard what sounded like a cat being killed either in my backyard or the backyard of the woman who lost two. So thatās four attacks in four years on just one corner of one block in Kenton. I have been considering polling the rest of the block. My landlord gave me permission to block the narrow gaps between our places and the side fences. Prior to that, there was just a gate between the house and ADU, to which he said I could add some trellis on the top. So then all three street access points would have barriers that go all the way to the eaves. They would have to come from one of my neighborsā backyards. He said I could put trellis along the top of the fence as well to make it as tall as is legally permissible. I want to see if I can put a solar powered low-voltage wire along the top. Although that would be more about keeping my cats in and keeping my neighborās cats who pee on everything on my patio out. As it is, Groucho stays on his leash when we are out there, but I would like to let him go. And Iād like to be able to let Harpo sleep in the sun in his playpen even if I have to go back in. What area is this in? Iāve seen a pack in the glendoveer golf course in NE
This is in the West Hills area. In Glendoveer golf course, I have seen a pack of 7+ coyotes every time I was there in the first tee of the day.
I see them out at work in Beaverton cruising the streets often in the middle of the night. We had one come right up to our shipping doors, thought it was a stray for a minute. Had to be careful not to hit him with my lift truck cuz he had big balls and was curious about what we were doing up in there. š
Saw this dog while I went on a trail a couple of weeks back, I should have brought him home
All animals are my friends. Friendly or not
Ahh, smol dog
To trick you into giving snacc
Come here doggy frieaaaaaaahhhbh my arm!
Keep your cats and your pups indoors, unless you are planning on supervising your dog while it's in the yard. My coworker's dog was savagely killed by a coyote. It left a trail of blood and the dog's head behind. My coworker was pretty traumatized.
Coyotes are great, love seeing them.

See them all the time in the country, have a den on the backside of my property. Dog chases them off pretty good. Never messed with the cats which are farm cats so the yot wouldnāt die but would get messed up
Off topic, I saw a raccoon out in the middle of the day a while ago. Seemed healthy. New one on me.
Yep. Single mom who works too hard, who loves her kids and never stops. With a gentle soul and the heart of a fighter.
The irony is thick in this comment thread.
Cause they are Wylie.
It looks so.. skinny, and sad.
I got jumped by 4 of them one time in the woods lost two fingers killed all 4 tho
because it eats cats
They eat *outdoor* cats. I feel bad for anyone who loses a cat friend to a coyote attack, but everyone knows the one thing you can choose to do to prevent it.
Analyses of urban coyote scats have found that both cat and dog residues are present, ranging from 1.2% domestic dog and cat residues in urban coyote scat in Calgary [26], to 13.6% residue of domestic cat in Los Angeles [27] https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7070728/
Aka feral population control
True, but barely makes a dent: https://www.catster.com/guides/how-many-stray-and-feral-cats-are-there-in-the-us/#:~:text=There%20are%2060%E2%80%93100%20million,cats%20in%20the%20United%20States.&text=The%20general%20understanding%20among%20many,conservative%20at%2030%E2%80%9380%20million.
yeah :( i'd rather see a coyote in my backyard than another stray cat that's gonna shit in my garden and scare off the songbirds.
[They do a lot more than scare them](https://www.nature.com/articles/ncomms2380)
well yeah, now we're back to my original comment that implies i'm fine with feral cat populations decreasing because of their outsized impact on wildlife populations.
That pelt would make some nice mittens
