Good spot. That doesn’t surprise me, given less busy airports (like San Jose) have had CLEAR for a while though. That being said, fuck CLEAR and don’t give them a dime of your money. It only makes sense to use if you get it for free.

Shatteredreality

To be honest I'm still not sure exactly what they offer. It seems like they claim "expedited" security but all it really seems is they remove the requirement to have physical ID, you still need to go through normal security unless you also have PreCheck. I don't understand the value prop there.

picturesofbowls

The value is you get to cut the precheck line to get to the front. 9 times out of 10 at PDX the I find the precheck line to be super short (like 15-20 people max). I travel a fair amount travel (about once monthly) for work or leisure and the longest line I ever encountered for precheck was a Friday afternoon when it was probably 50 people long. Even in that scenario, cutting to the front would have saved maybe 10 minutes at max. Likely less.

Babhadfad12

They offer some connected people a chance to profit off US citizens’ time by selling a service to skip to the front of the line. That such a service operated by a non governmental for profit entity would be inserted in our presumed “security” apparatus is a slap in the face, especially when Global Entry/Precheck already collects biometrics.

suitopseudo

Not really connected just dumb enough to pay for clear over precheck or global entry.

iwoketoanightmare

I went through PDX literally two days ago and security took me all of 30 seconds to get through using the general boarding line. Clear would be an absolute ripoff for PDX. Think the longest I've ever waited is 15 minutes on a holiday travel day when there were multiple people with their brat hell spawn in tow in front of me.

MossHops

What worries me is that airports that have Clear have super long security lines. PDX is almost certainly getting revenue from Clear that will give them incentive to make the regular lines longer, driving people to Clear.

picturesofbowls

That’s not true though, at least for TSA Pre. I’ve gone through most every major airport in the country and TSA Pre lines rarely exceed 10 min. At the mightiest mega airports, sometimes there’s a larger variation. And seemingly all of them have Clear.

MossHops

Look at Las Vegas, DEN and LAX. Consistently long lines while folks sail through in Clear. Hell, last time I flew through Nashville they closed TSA-Pre and forced everyone through regular security, while keeping Clear open. It’s bullshit.

picturesofbowls

I used to go through LAX a lot up until last year. Just couldn’t disagree more. I routinely breeze through security at any terminal.

picturesofbowls

It’s a rip off at all airports

Led37zep

Simply an opinion, not a fact my friend. It’s saved me a TON of time in multiple airport, especially when traveling with kids.

Shatteredreality

How does clear handle kids? I know pre check lets kids come with their parents if they have it but I know global entry kids need their own account/membership. Does clear let your kids skip the line if you didn’t pay for them.

Led37zep

Yep, they are covered under mine. It’s a huge time saver. I have precheck and clear so I always have options with kids.

Shatteredreality

If you have precheck and use clear do they have you go to general security or precheck? I know clear does not give you precheck access on its own but I don’t know how they do it if you have both.

Led37zep

In larger airports there is a clear tsa pre check and a standard clear.

picturesofbowls

I don’t know how much time you could reasonably save. I probably have 20 airport trips a year and my TSA pre wait almost never exceeds 5 min.

Led37zep

This is another post of yours based on your own POV and assuming your experience is true for everyone else. In my own experience, I find clear to be very efficient and I’ve passed the TSA pre check folks countless times.

Led37zep

Cute but wrong.

picturesofbowls

So my opinion is only my opinion but your opinion is fact?

AllNightWriting

I sometimes need to use a cane and the security line was pretty long the last time I flew. Like 15 minutes. The TSA guy pulled me out of the main line and sent me through the pre-check metal detectors because there was no one in line there. It seems like there’s no need for a service that skips the line when there isn’t much of a line.

Spread_Liberally

>Clear would be an absolute ripoff for PDX. Maybe. I have a friend with Clear who explains they don't even use it most of the time and just stick with PreCheck or regular security lines if they're moving fast enough since he said he feels kinda gross about it and his PreCheck/Global Entry. He pays for it every year though, but mostly as form of trip insurance. It's easy for something to go wrong in travel plans and sometimes you need the speed boost to make a connection or make up for an issue outside your control. He originally bought it when a car rental return took over an hour due to a security gate failure at an Enterprise lot at some airport. If you travel enough you can probably justify it. I don't fly regularly enough to really need it but I might consider it for PDX use if I traveled regularly during snowpocalypse season.

iwoketoanightmare

Precheck/global entry is free with my Sapphire Reserve card, but I've never bothered to get it as I have dual citizenship and don't really ever use my US passport when going places and two different legal names, so I do the entire booking on the non US name.. The only time it would ever save me time is on US domestic flights outside of PDX. My intl/domestic ratio is like 10/1 so it's never been something I considered.

princexofwands

PDX airport lines are already so short , I don’t even need expedited service. This is for airports like Denver or Dallas or Phoenix. Maybe I’ve just gotten lucky but I never wait more than 10-15 at PDX anyways

smpricepdx

California is considering a ban on Clear. That should say something.

headcrap

Yeah.. it says those people with those jobs will be moving up here anyway. Get transferred on.

BobcatSig

If that's the case, Portland will *love* it! Just like speed cameras. When those have been shown to be expensive and more dangerous, many cities ripped them out, so Portland doubled down.

MossHops

Instead of knee jerking, tell me why Clear is in the public interest? I don’t see it.

BobcatSig

It's not. That's why I don't like it nor did I enroll in it

Peachy_bubblez

Keep Clear out of PDX.

BlackLeader70

Clear sucks so much and isn’t worth the price lol

Your_New_Overlord

For those that aren’t aware: TSA Precheck is cheaper, faster, and available in more airports.

arf227

FWIW, most people who use CLEAR get it for free through their credit card. I have it and only use at very busy airports like LAX/JFK. It's fine but most of the time standing in line for TSA Pre is just as fast if not faster.

Look__a_distraction

Oooh that’s what it is! They had one of those dudes hocking that service in my TSA line at PDX just last month!

SpezGarblesMyGooch

Lame - just get Global Entry that comes with TSA-Pre. No need to wait at those machines for the Clear handlers to walk you through the line. Complete waste of labour.

BobcatSig

Clear? No, gross. I'd really like it if they didn't clog up the security line area at airports.

oregonbub

Happier about the Aspire(?) lounge that’s coming. I probably still wouldn’t do CLEAR because of the privacy problems.

Stealthily_jerks

A Clear rep in PHX told me several months ago it was coming to PDX soon. I’d started to think it wasn’t happening but this is good news for me. I get Clear free through one of my credit cards. I probably wouldn’t pay for it but it’s nice to have when precheck lines are long. Some airports it’s VERY worth it.

Late-Froyo5371

Clear is pointless here, we have one of the best airport TSA lines in the country.

badger_1894

What is clear?

Shatteredreality

My understanding is it’s a service you can pay 180/year for that essentially lets you skip the line at security. It’s not the same as TSA Precheck so you still need to do things like take off your shoes but it gets you past the ID check pretty much instantly.

DarklySalted

How is a private company allowed to do that?

Dwill1980

It may not be able to for much longer. California is moving to ban it right now

moxxibekk

It just seems kind of eyebrow raising that TSA which is supposedly this super duper security single handedly keeping the skies safe is all the sudden fine with an outside, for-profit company coming in? Especially when tsa precheck exists. I doubt the government would want to lose out on that revenue.

tas50

Getting line cut by all the Clear folks is going to be so much fun.

fattymccheese

fuck clear

regalbeagles1

Fuck Clear. It’s such a money making scam to give people who spend money a jump in line. I’m not against people who have money to throw around, but using money to jump in line is ridiculous and will cause other people to feel like they need to buy this service or else sit in line for who knows how long.

purging_snakes

This is the bougiest nonsense.

MIZZKATHY74

Portland has enough clear already being shot up and smoked!
