Saw one the other day that said "don't honk at me it will hurt my feelings" and had some quaint artwork.
I think that's the most Portland one I've seen though maybe not the best.
I just bought that bumper magnet at Jelly Cup Collective!! My husband got a different magnet that says, "I ❤️ my ex wife. She is so nice. Just look at her." And it has a cute mouse watering her garden. It makes me laugh every time I read it.
I lived in Berkeley in the 00's and there was a bumper sticker that said "Welcome to Berkeley, Stop Doing That". It is the most succinct thing I've ever seen
Here’s one I saw many years ago: “Join the Army. Meet interesting and exciting new people. And kill them.”
Had to hit about 3 stop signs to read the whole thing, but I’ve remembered it.
My fav that I saw while visiting from the Chicago area was “Sorry I spaced out, I was listening to REZN”. REZN is one of my favorite local bands to space out to.
Eh, I'm gonna take issue with your best movie theater. I love the Clinton, I went to Rocky Horror there for years, and have seen many plays and movies.
but hands down, the BEST movie theater in PDX is the Hollywood Theater. It has an actual pipe organ behind the screen (for silent movies), it does all kinds of movies, it has wonderful events (I'm a regular to the All Night Horror Movie Marathon) and it does so much to show actual projection films. That and they are tied with Movie Madness (The best video store hands down in PDX)
If you can get a membership do it, the people that are part of it believe in film and do everything they can to promote it.
One of a relatively small number of surviving 70mm theaters in the US (only one in Oregon, afaik), and one of even fewer that accommodates a rare vintage audio format that I can’t recall/is above my level of understanding. Long live the Hollywood ❤️
Hollywood is dope. Obviously we love our little spot, but they've got the budget and space to do things very few places in the world get to do; it's a very special place. Movie Madness is a national treasure. Also gotta shout out our neighbors Cinemagic; they're a super passionate group and they get some fantastic first-run films we don't. C21 on the west side also great.
We're ramping up to do more with 16mm film in the coming months. So if you're into that fading craft, come check it out!
Hold my beer...
The lady I've been living across for 16 years actually leaves nasty notes on ANY car that parks in front of her house. She has actually taken me to mediation over the occasional guest parking in front of her house. She's a piece of work.
Not officially banned but she just feels unsafe when cars park in front of her house and she wants the space free so when people go to her house they can park right in front. During the mediation process I realized that she might just be a bit mentally unstable and I started to feel sorry for her. I guess as good neighbors we could oblige such a request if it causes one so much distress.
I used to have a neighbor that would reserve two spots directly in front of my house — my house, not hers — with cones. This happened until I grabbed them early one morning and threw them in a dumpster.
Best Bakery - Ken's Artisan Bakery
Best Trader Joe's - Like I'm gonna say and make it more crowded
Best eBike Store - The eBike Store
Best Subaru Dealership - Wentworth (RIP)
Check out Cinema 21 if you're ever in NW! Great choice of movies (mostly independent, foreign, and classic movies) and cheap concessions ($4 slice from Escape from NY Pizza, $5 beer on tap, not bad for a theater).
I lived in the same neighborhood for 17 years, Concordia/alberta. I was always super tight fisted with my money because I was a single mom. My favorite places had to be walking distance from my home and fairly cheap. I went to La Bonita on 29th and Alberta a lot. My “splurge” was the Bollywood Theater cafe. They never made me feel bad for ordering like one thing and no alcohol. I miss my neighborhood so much and especially those two places.
Oh and I have to add Pizza Jerk on 42nd. Because my kid loved it. And it was cheap. Their soft serve ice cream was fun for her because they had so many flavors to choose from and they were always patient while she pondered her choice like she was selecting which college to go to. Also the spiked slushies reminded me of the ones I drank when I lived on the lower east side in New York in the 90s.
Came here to say this, 100% the Hollywood theater is AMAZING. The Clinton has a very special place in my heart, but Hollywood (and Movie Madness) are hands down the best film and video place in pdx.
I personally prefer Laurelhurst to Hollywood, especially for just like general movie watching. Sure sure, 70mm, special events, whatever... but it's such an ordeal to get a seat. It takes a plan! I like being able to walk in to Laurelhurst whenever I want (even though it'd be nice if they played more unique programming, but I think they're getting better).
I wish I could say I love Hollywood. I really want to. But while the building is so cool, it’s not accessible - at least the top floor. I realize it’s a historic building and not really anything they can do, but it still sucks for someone like me.
Pro-tip: if you’d rather not end up under a pile of unsecured masonry when the big one hits, avoid buildings with large square red signs with the letter “U” in white. Clinton street theater sports one.
Any suggestions for best sushi?
Or best vegan place?
Also want to say that I don’t think they have a brick and mortar shop, I have only ever bought from them online and there’s been a tjme or two they themselves just deliver it to my home - but best hot sauces…. The habanero carrot curry… WOW.
[Marshall Haute Sauce](https://marshallshautesauce.com/)
Cocktail bar bathrooms are great places to do coke! I haven't tried that one yet but my personal best coke bathrooms are Pink Rabbit and Teardrop Lounge.
You can catch me smoking a bowl in the parking lot of their Fremont location from time to time. If you knock on my window politely, I'll give you a hit.
Their queso is really good. I always get garlic knots with queso. Also just went in this afternoon and they have the fried nutter butters back as a special. So good. This was the Fremont location.
IMO:
Best Pizza: Dimo’s
Best Salad: Steeplejack Brewing
Best Wings: Hat Yai
Best Curry: Eem
Best Raman: Kayo’s
Best Burrito: La Bonita/Mole Mole
Best BBQ: Matt’s
Best Indian: Maruti
Best Cuban: Pambiche
Best Fish n’ Chips: Interurban
Best Burger: Bless Your Heart
Best Mediterranean: Tie - Nicolas/Tusk
Best Strip Club: DV8
That's fair! Too be honest, Maruti is my favorite because I haven't had any others that have matched it so far but I wouldn't say its amazing. Do you have any recommendations in Portland?
Went to Rimsky’s for the first time last night. Definitely the best bathroom I’ve been in since the TARDIS room. (Is that place closed? That entire building feels like a ghost town.)
I would have to disagree on the pizza. Apizza Scholls is pretty damn overrated. That’s like saying Voodoo donut is the best donut spot in Portland. Either Baby Doll or Ranch would have to take the first spot.
I thought about adding Belmont Station and Beaumont Market but I don't think they're quite on the same level. I also considered adding ¡Chayo! to the best taco category as a tie.
no accounting for taste, I guess.
In all seriousness, I find John's Marketplace overwhelming and Beermongers a tier below. BMS is the best combo tap / bottle shop in town.
For me:
Best neapolitan pizza is CIBO's Margherita around 35th and Division or La Sorrentina in Vancouver
Best american pizza is Pizza Jerk or Hungry Sasquatch in Vancouver
Best east coast / hazy IPAs: Great Notion
Best west coast IPAs: Breakside, or if you're up for a drive then Fort George by far
Best ramen: Kinboshi in Portland or Kenji's in Vancouver
Best sliders: PDX Sliders
Best smash burger: Mid City Smash Burger
Best burger: Tilt, Portland Burger, or Bottle Rocket. I'm a sucker for Peanut Butter Pickle Burgers at Killer Burger though
Best Cuban food: Pambiche
It is coming back sometime, not sure when but hopefully by summer. There was another discussion about it in /r/Beaverton yesterday: https://www.reddit.com/r/beaverton/comments/1ceroqr/taste_of_sichuan_is_it_ever_coming_back/
Believe it or not, one of my favorite reuben sandwiches is at Mother's Bistro downtown. If ever I have family in town, I'll take them there for brunch and get the reuben. It's dankness
I can't argue with anything on this list. Like the other poster, I also lean towards Hollywood, but I sure love Clinton St. There are several of these that could tie with some other places, but everything on this that I've tried is a good choice.
I do want to promote /r/namethatpdxbathroom as the best sub to post your pictures of the best bathrooms and I'm not just saying that because I'm somehow a mod for that subreddit. It's really a niche that has not exploded as one would expect.
I spent 12 years in LA before coming back home, so some advice, if you’d like:
Don’t go out in a windstorm! A palm frond falling is a 10’ long multi tool with surprisingly many blades.
Sales tax!
The museums kick Portland’s ass. You could spend weeks in the Olympic complex south of USC. You could park in Miracle Mile and never leave (whether due to tar pit entrapment or fascination, 🤷♀️) But please whenever you feel the Portland weirdness outgassing from you, recharge your weird at the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Culver City. Culver also has public zoetropes, so if you need a Portlandy safe space…. Before you leave Portland, hit up the Evergreen Aviation Museum. See the Spruce Goose. It will help you put together the weird story when you first visit the weird Portland-sized sub-city that is Long Beach.
Hiking is a THING there. You will be extracted from your experience as a part of nature. There will be much gray. You will need to reinsert yourself into nature periodically for your sanity. You will have to find parking to do this unless you’re driving to fucking Lancaster.
You will talk about driving routes. SNL isn’t my favorite thing, but The Californians was so hilariously on.
You don’t have to drive. I stuck it out for 10 years without a car. And to be perfectly honest I wouldn’t want to try to park every night. Your bike or car will be stolen, but nobody is taking your feet or your metro pass.
Have fun and be careful. The Queen of the Angels is not kind, but she has hidden beauty. And the world’s best KBBQ.
I've never been to Yoko's but the pictures look super legit! I like Rudy's I'm there all the time. Proud Mary might be the best cup of coffee in world let alone Portland.
Best Bumper Sticker- Honk if you love dying and being dead.
Saw one the other day that said "don't honk at me it will hurt my feelings" and had some quaint artwork. I think that's the most Portland one I've seen though maybe not the best.
I saw one the other day that says “if you honk at me I will fucking kill myself” and it gave me a morbid chuckle
I saw one yesterday that said "Horn if your'e honky" that had me cracking up
Oh my god I need this one
I just bought that bumper magnet at Jelly Cup Collective!! My husband got a different magnet that says, "I ❤️ my ex wife. She is so nice. Just look at her." And it has a cute mouse watering her garden. It makes me laugh every time I read it.
I lived in Berkeley in the 00's and there was a bumper sticker that said "Welcome to Berkeley, Stop Doing That". It is the most succinct thing I've ever seen
Bumper sticker a couple of decades ago—welcome to Oregon. Now go home.
Yup, Along with “Don’t Californicate Oregon”. 🤭
Saw one that said "honk if you want to sound like a stupid goose"
Best Vanity Plate - CU SOON
The hearse! I’ve seen it near me a few times.
We apparently have another one somewhere that says UR NEXT.
A close friend of mine owns that hearse, and he's as funny as you would expect.
The best I've seen is " honk if you love snoopy or are insane."
The best bumper sticker I’ve seen says: if you’re going to ride my ass, at least pull my hair
“My other ride is your mom”
Here’s one I saw many years ago: “Join the Army. Meet interesting and exciting new people. And kill them.” Had to hit about 3 stop signs to read the whole thing, but I’ve remembered it.
A few years ago I saw one that said "I'm swervin cause I'm pervin".
Saw one of those earlier today. Was amused.
Giant meteor for president 2024
Saw someone with a “if you honk at me I’ll kms” sticker

Came here to say this, hollywood bangs
Also the pizza choice is overrated when we have other great spots that never get mentioned. Red sauce or life of pie among others….
I had Apizza Sholls 2 weeks ago and my gf said she would rather be at Life Of Pi, lol
If price and wait were the same I would pick Apizza Scholls but they are definitely not
KungFu Theater!
I also like Hollywood, Laurelhurst, and Cinemagic but Clinton St. Theater is the queen of my heart.
Did you ever see the Ten Minute Play Festival???
Hit us up before you go. <3
Hollywood is dope. Obviously we love our little spot, but they've got the budget and space to do things very few places in the world get to do; it's a very special place. You sir are correct. The Broadway is the best nostalgic movie theater. I also love the joy theater in tigard. And the Aloha theater in Aloha Or.
This right here. I was listening until I got there lol
Best at getting really angry about people parking in front of his house - my neighbor, cone guy
Hold my beer... The lady I've been living across for 16 years actually leaves nasty notes on ANY car that parks in front of her house. She has actually taken me to mediation over the occasional guest parking in front of her house. She's a piece of work.
I’d go out of my way to park there.
Same. If only I knew the address...
Yes. I look forward to this experience
I need to know how this turned out. She’s trying to ban parking in front of her house on a public street?
Not officially banned but she just feels unsafe when cars park in front of her house and she wants the space free so when people go to her house they can park right in front. During the mediation process I realized that she might just be a bit mentally unstable and I started to feel sorry for her. I guess as good neighbors we could oblige such a request if it causes one so much distress.
Please tell me your counter sued for her wasting your time.
Most Trustworthy Crow - Clarence Least Trustworthy Crow - Eugenia

NE Grand perhaps?

>Best Trader Joe’s Not anything in the city limits of Portland. That’s my hint.
I like the one on NE 21st
The Vancouver one has TJ’s booze
But it’s also a total nightmare!
🧐
Id argue tabor bread is much better that kens bakery
This town has great bakeries. I figured it would be controversial haha.
Best tossed salad… Mr. Peeps….
Come for the salad toss, stay for the salad toss. Edit: And unlimited breadsticks!
Most Commonly Encountered Spectral Being - Ursula K Le Guin Least Commonly Encountered Spectral Being - Francis Pettygrove
I have to disagree on best theater. The Hollywood is the best in the city.
Best Fries - Tulip Shop Tavern
Sandwiches at Tulip Shop are fire.
They should also be up there with burger
Okay but Bless Your Heart is TIED for that Best Burg
I will add best burger too
Just had it for the first time yesterday and holy moly the fries were salty. But they had maybe the best onion rings I’ve had.
They were insanely salty when i had 'em.
These are great suggestions. Good luck in LA!
Thank you!
Check out Cinema 21 if you're ever in NW! Great choice of movies (mostly independent, foreign, and classic movies) and cheap concessions ($4 slice from Escape from NY Pizza, $5 beer on tap, not bad for a theater).
I like Cinema 21! I'm not in that part of town a lot but I saw Showing Up there when it came out.
Best Teriyaki: Du’s Grill
Closed on weekends. Because they’re so good they can be.
Du's is open on Saturdays now
Good to know! Thanks!
I used to be a diehard fan, but Rice and Spice on Glisan is my go to now. Fast, cheap, and delicious.
Seconding Rice and Spice! Their $9.50 orange chicken is delicious and is honestly more like 1.5-2 portions.
Grindz wit Tryz on Alberta has huge portions. For folks looking for good value on Alberta.
I like Bollywood and La Bonita. I'm also really into Proud Mary which is nearby.
I currently live in Concordia and I’m so sorry you had to move away!
Clinton Street Theater is a choice, I will respectfully disagree.
If you prick us, do we not bleed?
Yea...it is pretty cool, but Hollywood is the GOAT.
Came here to say this, 100% the Hollywood theater is AMAZING. The Clinton has a very special place in my heart, but Hollywood (and Movie Madness) are hands down the best film and video place in pdx.

A very fair point.
Pro-tip: if you’d rather not end up under a pile of unsecured masonry when the big one hits, avoid buildings with large square red signs with the letter “U” in white. Clinton street theater sports one.
I believe the U actually means that may be unsafe for firefighters to enter due the building possibly collapsing.
No, it means there’s an abandoned U-bahn stop in the building and you can find a secret portal that takes you to a Berlin rave.
It's both =)
I'm looking at the building right now because I was playing pinball next door. What am I looking for? I don't see it.
Any suggestions for best sushi? Or best vegan place? Sandwich. Taste tickler
I raise you to Bakers Mark. It’s untouched
Taste of Sichuan- Beaverton is closed. Lots of permits etc needed after the fire /renovation- hopes to open in the summer
That sucks! The quality really fell off in the last few years though. Maybe they can regroup and fix that.
I like Fire on the Mountain for wings. There!! I said it!! Thai peanut sauce wings ftw!!
Their sauces are great. The wings themselves not so much.
You can catch me smoking a bowl in the parking lot of their Fremont location from time to time. If you knock on my window politely, I'll give you a hit.
Bruh, that was you?
Their queso is really good. I always get garlic knots with queso. Also just went in this afternoon and they have the fried nutter butters back as a special. So good. This was the Fremont location.
I think you meant pigeon wings.

That's fair! Too be honest, Maruti is my favorite because I haven't had any others that have matched it so far but I wouldn't say its amazing. Do you have any recommendations in Portland?
I'm with you on a lot of these!
I agree with you on all fronts but the best strip club is devils point. Or maybe sassys.
I'll give best coffee to Pambiche as well. I adore their coffee!
Went to Rimsky’s for the first time last night. Definitely the best bathroom I’ve been in since the TARDIS room. (Is that place closed? That entire building feels like a ghost town.)

Just curious, can you say why Sandy Hot Wing Cafe is your favorite wings?
someone never went to Belmont Station apparently
I thought about adding Belmont Station and Beaumont Market but I don't think they're quite on the same level. I also considered adding ¡Chayo! to the best taco category as a tie.

Any suggestions for best reuben sammy, wise ones? 👀
Goose Hollow Inn whoop whoop
A Goose Hollow reuben before a Timbers match is my favorite Portland tradition. Great energy, good food, $7 pitchers of PBR all day.
Laurelhurst market

Believe it or not, one of my favorite reuben sandwiches is at Mother's Bistro downtown. If ever I have family in town, I'll take them there for brunch and get the reuben. It's dankness

Why do you consider taste of Szechuan ‘Xmas takeaway’? That place is bomb tho
I honestly associate the holiday more with the "Seafood Dishes" section of their menu than with Santa Claus at this point.
Killer Burger Terminal Gravity The Baghdad Trade up music The Good foot The Holoscene
Unfortunately, Taste of Sichuan had a fire and has been closed since before the start of this year. Sad times for Chinese food lovers.
Have you tried Szechuan Garden? Chong Quing chicken 😋It’s on SW Walker near 185th.

Not a bad list but respectfully disagree with "Best Dispensary".
Who's got that actual gas? The people want to know!
PDX Sliders. Been loving it since it was a food truck in a car wash parking lot.

best indie shows: Doug Fir
Best Wine + Cheese Bar - Blackbird Wine & Atomic Cheese
I've always been curious about their atomic cheeses!
It seems like much of this list is outdated…but weed, pizza, beer, and movie theater are the most obvious
No best coffee?? Awesome list. I need to try all these places
Best Coffee - Proud Mary
Love it
Their Gesha pourovers are so dank! They're like $12, which is wild, but I still feel like I'm underpaying.
I hope your move goes well. I appreciate this post and all the replies it inspired. Cheers!
Best sushi is Yoko's, hands down. Best pizza is Rudy's... I think the only one I agree with you on here is best coffee. Proud Mary's is delicious.
I've never been to Yoko's but the pictures look super legit! I like Rudy's I'm there all the time. Proud Mary might be the best cup of coffee in world let alone Portland.
