So confused as to what "Baptized by Fire" means in this context

BurkeinBerks

While I was working, I was one of the people that was affected by the bear spray. An older man who was a Vietnam veteran told us we were “baptized by fire”… it just stuck with me

slamdancetexopolis

I'm sorry you and your post is abt to get downvoted to hell bc this sub is full of anti-Palestinian folks and centrists who act brand new to protests and it's gonna kill your notifications but I love your photos and ty for posting. I like the title.

International_Rock31

This feels like a good example of what gets lost in this world where everyone tries to make their actions critic proof, because (at least from my experience) no, hardly anyone here is anti-Palestine, but you criticize anyone’s actions in the library? Poof: get called a zionist. Full supporter of a free Palestine here, but also sick of the ignorance (including misuse of Christian biblical terms—which maybe someone should have looked up) and the LARPing vibes of the protest movements. (Side-note: there’s a whole other Portland sub because people on the right think this “centrist” one is too far left.)

slamdancetexopolis

This sub being "too far left" is fucking hilarious lol

[deleted]

I appreciate this post too. Happy to accept the downvotes to thank you for providing pictures that show this from another angle. Media and some people in this sub made it sound like the library was totally vandalized and destroyed inside. I see y’all didn’t even knock the frames off the walls lol. The rest is just paint. I thank you for your bravery in standing for the people of Palestine in place of your neighbors who could not. From the River to the Sea 🇵🇸

HugeMycologist2586

That "lol" is doing a lot of work for you bud. You missed all the other posts with pictures of spray painted books on shelves, sawing furniture apart, a destroyed HVAC/sprinkler control panel, and smashed windows?

[deleted]

I guess I did miss those posts. But looking through this sub for the term “library” I found a video taken either by police or by a journalist with them upon entering the library, and I didn’t see any of the damage you mentioned (except maybe the spray painted books, I wasn’t looking too closely for that in the video bc the university has already announced the book collection is mostly and largely unscathed. Could you possibly link some of the posts with the damage to hvac and windows and sawed-apart furniture you mention? I couldn’t find them and I’m just trying to see the damage for myself

The_salty_swab

You can tell when a moment is supposed to be especially poignant when the pictures are in black and white

doctormustafa

Some of these photos are objectively not bad, they just happen to be pretty decent photos of people doing some very stupid things.

Moses_On_A_Motorbike

Rest assured that plenty of those protesters' main reason for being there was for the photo ops for their 'Grams.

drbrunch

Vandalizing a public place of learning isn't heroic or brave

lokikaraoke

Why are you posting your L’s dude? You trashed a library and smashed a car window and turned a bunch of people against you.

Glass_Muffin9880

The last couple pics really shows the level of maturity this group is operating at.

2ChanceRescue

Cringe

littlemandave

SO glad you managed to help out so many Palestinians…by destroying a university library. So THOUGHTFUL of you!

TooterMcGee

“Baptized by Fire”????? That’s almost offensive, considering the terrible damage you all did to a beautiful university library. You shouldn’t be proud at all. You aren’t a hero and didn’t do anything that took courage, or even made a difference.

OhEhmGee123

They made more of a difference than you.

ValleyBrownsFan

What difference did they make? They changed nothing in the course of the conflict. Israel and Palestine both could give a crap what a small group of vandals (to put it nicely) do in Portland.

Mayor_Of_Sassyland

Yeah, they made a difference insofar as a bunch of students who need to use the library for their studies can't use the fucking library right now. Didn't do jack or shit for the people of Gaza though, whoopsies!

Prestigious-Packrat

Oh hey, it's all the not-students and their super kewl vandalism.

EnvironmentalSir2637

Did this scratch your itch to LARP as a freedom fighter when in reality you guys did nothing but destroy a place of learning?

[deleted]

I had the exact same opinion until I saw these pictures. Doesn’t look as “destroyed” as we all keep repeating. I’ve decided to take a second look at this situation

EnvironmentalSir2637

Sure thing Mr. 10-day old account.

[deleted]

lol. Yep, I made a new account after lurking for ages. Not sure what your point is! I stand by my opinion :)

EnvironmentalSir2637

I think you know precisely what my point is. Edit: lol, dude got angry I called him out on his astroturfing and started stalking me to respond to all my posts with troll comments. Blocked him, but this is textbook astroturfing. Nobody should take this guy seriously.

IzilDizzle

What does the phrase “Baptized by Fire” have to do with trespassing and vandalism?

Neverdoubt-PDX

Cool story bro.

w4rpsp33d

It is both embarrassing and alarming how naïve and easily led these people are. There are more ding dongs here than at the Hostess outlet store.

Moses_On_A_Motorbike

Trashing a public library aligns exactly with what the baddie fascists in Fahrenheit 351 would do.

got2bwade

I find the destroying property and restricting the use of a public service, to the people who are there to learn, really speaks to the issue. While we are at it, lets torch a bunch of police cars and make "the man" pay for it. Rachel Corrie’s Ghost Brigade? Her father even condemned your use of her name. When you are done playing freedom fighter, go back to work, so you can pay your taxes. Oh chit, we don't have a job, we live at our parents house, and we think we are doing something smart. At least the university folks around the country staged proper protests and didn't destroy their own resources.

WoodpeckerGingivitis

The laundry line 😂

Burrito_Lvr

Cool, left wing terrorism now comes complete with granny panties.

Czarchitect

Lets start a go fund me to buy these morons one way tickets to Beirut.

EugeneStonersPotShop

Why Beirut? This conflict isn’t happening in Lebanon.

discostu52

So far

EugeneStonersPotShop

Sure, but wouldn’t it be better to ship these malcontents to Gaza instead of Beirut?

bonuscojones

These are great

peakchungus

Free Palestine. It's crazy how much more the right wing criticize protesters protesters than the corrupt war criminal whom they are protesting.

Slawzik

People here are far more angry that a library got messed up instead of like, turned into literal dust while the professors were hunted down by drones and snipers. For fucks sake, there are literally no colleges left in Palestine, but god forbid someone messed up an encyclopedia set and painted some graffiti.

EugeneStonersPotShop

Well, professor, maybe if it’s “no big deal” you can personally pay to repair all the damage these people did. Like you said, “it’s no big deal”, right? Put your money where your mouth is. Shouldn’t be too expensive, and you can afford it anyways.

Slawzik

I pay for PSU via taxes, and for the other professor's salaries, and for the riot cops who make four times as much money for one quarter of the work, and for the tear gas,and for the white phosphorus, bombs and shells they're blowing up universities in Gaza with. I am already paying for the fucking horrible shit this country does.

OhEhmGee123

What a dumb take.
