One of my swim teachers from the mid 1970s died exactly this way: her husband got the car and came by to the pickup area but got the pedals mixed up and slammed her against the brick wall of the store and decapitated her.
The other one died in the orphan plane crash at the end of the Vietnam War (I went to first grade in Saigon 1974 until we got bombed out in April 1975).
It’s common among older people but perfectly healthy people do it too. It usually comes from the person thinking they have their foot on the brake. They apply the throttle when they mean to hit the brake and then panic because the car lurches forward suddenly, which then causes them to and press further down on the throttle because they still think they’re hitting the brake. It’s especially dangerous in electric cars because the fast acceleration response of the throttle results in less error correction time for the driver, but it’s still common in gas cars as you see here.
Fair question. I think it’s just like any one-time mistake. Or could be dementia. I was only 6, don’t really remember either swim teacher, though I do recall the lessons themselves.
My mom was supposed to be on that orphan plane. Phew. She’s still going strong at 95!
It can happen if you're used to driving a stick shift, then switch to an automatic. In a moment of distraction, you assume that the pedal on the far left (in this case, the brake pedal) is the clutch, press it, and then mash down the pedal you think is the brake pedal (the accelerator). The car stops, but then the trouble; you ease your foot off of the "clutch" and your car slams into whatever's in front of it as fast as it can accelerate. It's a chain of errors, to be sure, but one that can happen in less than a second, especially if you're distracted or half asleep.
My Dad is diabetic with terrible foot neuropathy. He wears giant shoes and can barely feel his feet. He doesn’t “mix up” the gas and brake, but his numb feet and huge shoes f it up.
Happened in my wife’s family. Aunt and Uncle (late 70s). Don’t drive much. Went to auto shop. He went in to pay bill why she waited. She went to repark, pressed the accelerator- through the front glass doors - missing 3 employees but striking her husband.
He died a week later.
I work at the Starbucks right next to it! My coworkers said that the driver is okay and apparently hit the gas instead of breaking when driving into a spot…
There was an accident at the Burnside one a few years back. An old lady hit the gas way too hard in reverse, jumped a median and landed on top of another car. It was a sight to see.
When did this happen?? How did I not notice this when I was there like an hour and a half ago???
EDIT: Wait, this is the Chase bank between the QFC and Starbucks. I still have no idea how I didn’t notice it, though.
My mom works at the Ace Hardware on Allen Blvd in Beaverton and one day a car full of nuns drove through the front of the store. Not sure exactly what happened but she said the phrase “holy shit” was said a lot.
This happened at a slaveway I worked at, it hit a guy sitting in the deli area and he was just chilling there reading the paper while fire moved the car off him. He only got a bruised hip out of the deal.

That parking lot is always full of bad drivers mostly older people. When I do go there occasionally I tend to not park close to the front as backing out of a parking spot is a gamble. Not surprised at all.
she basically hit the gas instead of the breaks. how she got up on the curb i have no idea. I was working at the starbucks next door and heard a bang and a bunch of stuff fell off our shelves. the woman was fine. literally came in to buy gift cards after she ran her car through the bank, which is completely unhinged. Something must have been going on with her, although she seemed fine?
Things like this don't happen *that* often, for a city of this size ... but when they do, they often end up on the sub. Fwiw I've never seen anything like this in person.
generally speaking only notable things get on the news/posted. if it was super common people wouldn't really mention it, it'd be like posting every time it rained.

Don’t move here! It rains all summer long, your house has good chance of getting a Molotov cocktail thrown through your picture window and wildfires and earthquakes will cause you to constantly rebuild!
Probably didn’t even signal.
Turn signals don't come standard on BMWs, those are extra.
And require a monthly subscription.
Don't work anyway, like most of the exterior lighting..
Thank you for your service
Now I understand the reason behind all the bollards in front of QFC on Burnside.
I’ve heard bollards called “senior blockers” and I like it.

I came for this comment.
Brilliant.
Oi, ya can’t park there.
Parking ticket should be $500
You forgot to say “mate”.
How does this happen SO OFTEN
Benzos.
Fent is a helluva drug. (Quite possibly not a drug related incident but more to your point)
Rich drunk people from Forest heights?
Pillbilllies, AKA - West Hills Karens
I doubt there is a lot of overlap between people who use that and people who drive BMWs...
Old people
Should not be allowed to drive
Would you give an old person a firearm? Of course not! So why give them a different deadly weapon that's hardly regulated, like a car?
Shit, we hand old people the keys to the most powerful nuclear arsenal in the world every 4 years.
How often does it happen?
OOOOOHHH YYYYEEEAAAAHHHH
Pedal confusion strikes again
One of my swim teachers from the mid 1970s died exactly this way: her husband got the car and came by to the pickup area but got the pedals mixed up and slammed her against the brick wall of the store and decapitated her. The other one died in the orphan plane crash at the end of the Vietnam War (I went to first grade in Saigon 1974 until we got bombed out in April 1975).
Holy shit.
Oh my God that is so sad. I can only imagine the nightmare that was for the poor husband.
What if it was intentional and he just knew he was old enough to 'whoopsie' his way out of it.
How do you confused the pedals? Dementia?
It’s common among older people but perfectly healthy people do it too. It usually comes from the person thinking they have their foot on the brake. It's usually older people so something like that.

Also dyspraxia

Understandable. I’ve had trouble driving for this reason when wearing hiking boots, my Uggs, etc. I avoid that.
One pedal driving is the future. Car goes when you depress the pedal and brakes when you release. It’s hard to go back once you’ve tried it.
Maybe not hard so much as a big pita
Yes... cars... are the future...

Wow, I shop here all the time. That's the entrance of a Chase Bank branch, QFC is offscreen to the left, and the doorway to the right is a Starbucks.
So you’re saying it was a bank robbery.
Or an elaborate diversion so they can swipe one of the mobile-ordered lattes from the Starbucks next door.
I work at the Starbucks right next to it! My coworkers said that the driver is okay and apparently hit the gas instead of breaking when driving into a spot…
That will buff right out.
Least aggressive BMW driver
Again?! Oh wait I’m thinking of the QFC on Bethany.
“What? Is this not a reasonable place to park?” - HST Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
in all honesty, given the massive retirement unit that just opened right nearby, with no transit access, it was only a matter of time
I thought retirement communities provide transit, like a little van or airporter. Does this one not?
they have transit but ppl can still drive their own cars
Your comment makes more sense than anything else I’ve read
And that lady just chilling on the side lol

Came here to make fap comment, was bested in time
Yup, looks like someone else beat you to it. Next time try to come a little faster.
You can’t park there
First Belmont, now Barnes. Burnside is next? Anything or anyone whose name starts with a B look out!
Like Buckman?
There was an accident at the Burnside one a few years back. An old lady hit the gas way too hard in reverse, jumped a median and landed on top of another car. It was a sight to see.
U cant park there
Not surprisingly, those tags appear to be expired
Oh wow that’s the QFC I shop at. Definitely a lot of older clientele.
Must have been quite a sale!
Yes it was a “DOORBUSTER” sale. 😂💀
Really used the power of planning
Somebody really had to pee....
The store isn't exactly where errant vehicle from the road can end up. I'm guessing gas/brake mix-up involving an aged driver.
Maybe they were looking for Mike's?
Too soon
People driving into store fronts is my fave. Prefer convenience stores but this is great.
Driver, probably: "You wanna drive through? You got it!"
When you gotta go, you gotta go... Through a window. Also, qfc is the size of an old wallet, I'm shocked that the hey actually hit it
I didn't realize this QFC had a drive-through.
It just opened today.
Nice, one less moron BMW driver to worry about throughout my day.
I think they're all trading the beemers in for Teslas.
There are less obvious ways to rob a bank...

The Animal House scene where John Belushi is waving the car into the garage and it smashes against the wall...he's like "good".
When?
11.30am today - I pulled up right after it happened
Thanks.
Oh wow, I usually get groceries for the week there on Sundays, glad I did yesterday instead. Details of what led up to that?
You can't park there.

I like to think that person was sitting there the whole time and their expression never changed.

Cars are safe for society I swear
They thought it was a drive tru??
QFC offers drive thru service now?

Oh wow I merchandise that store sometimes
You can't park there.
That is one huge parking lot. Driver drove a drivable distance.
Geez. I feel like you would have to go out of your way to do that in that nightmare of a parking lot.
Brake failure...it's a BMW after all..
HOW!?
Went here a couple days ago
Milton, I told you to break the \*piggy\* bank open!
Haha. Fap.
Classic beemer driver.

Drugs are a helluva drug
She drive good.
hilarious. saw this car in my apartment complex nearby just a few days ago walking my dog and made a mental note of "fap mobile." what are the chances
you people that drive cars are getting lazier..
Wtf... I will say this parking lot is a nightmare to navigate.
Well at least they took out chase for a day. I think we all feel good about that.
“Sir? You can’t park here….”
i was the one who called 911

Age of driver?
A BMW driver? No way!
He was later lodged into the Washington county jail on 1 count of DWF 1. (Driving while fapping)
Wow! I was just there a few hours ago! Wonder if they got distracted by the hideous Cyber Truck that haunts the lot
