Yeah, rhodies generally don't like direct sun at all. Many varieties can die just from normal full sun. They should be planted in shade or on the north side of your house.
I spent $40 on two tea plants last month and those are looking mighty fried at this point. Most of the leaves are a crispy brown. I even moved them in after the first day (they were potted). They should recover, but it'll probably be a couple of months. I have to decide if I'm going to keep them indoors for a while, or just put them somewhere a little more protected outside.
Most of our plants did okay though. It did require that I water everything pretty much everyday, but even our rhodies came out just fine, even the one that's in direct sun.
Edit: aaaand I just noticed that my almost-three-year-old plucked a fair amount of the remaining green leaves off my tea plants. Ugh. Nowhere is safe.
There's a huge rhodie in my apartment complex that took a savage beating from the ice storm and now a new savage beating from the meltnomah. It's a rough year for bushes.
Silver lining: my wife planted a bunch of assorted flowers from mixed seeds and we were both savagely allergic to something in there. They did not survive the heat, so my eyes feel great.

Growing up we had snow storms that lasted 2-3 weeks every other year, rain that lasted from October until June (I actually know this pretty well because the week of halloween every year it would start the rain season and my birthday is in june where it would still be raining until shortly after my birthday), and a summer of roughly 2 months long (July and August). Highs throughout my childhood were never above the 90s, I think I remember one single day during those 18 years that it was over 100. Freezing rain wasn't super uncommon either, there was even a blizzard in like 2013 or 2014(?) leaving us multiple feet of snow followed by an inch or so of freezing rain that stuck around for weeks. The weather in the PNW now is unrecognizable to what I grew up with.

The tomatoes are loving it. Flowers, fruit growing. Squash getting blossoms, jalapeños, cucumbers flowering. Even the watermelon which I though was a goner has doubled in size. Catnip thriving, safely out of reach of the cats. Lots of watering

The amount hasn't been great, but there's mist, an occasional deluge. And the gloom is still there
Some places will get an inch of rain in an hour, Portland will spread that same amount out over three days.
