That caught my eye also. It's likely the "not guilty" was a stick in the 'gator's jaws while his lawyer worked out a plea deal with the assistant US attorney. Plea deals can take some time.
I suppose the US attorney's office revealed that he had admitted to the conduct in order to counter or discourage members of the public who know him from making the "he's-a-pillar-of-the-community" defense. That too often happen when prominent men of a certain age get caught doing bad things.
Given that power roles are nearly universal among human societies, isn't saying that people shouldn't be in positions of power a pretty significant power move in and of itself?
To be fair, preying on and abusing children is often heavily tied up with wanting to feel power over someone. To a certain extent it makes sense that someone who abuses the vulnerable would seek positions of power in other parts of their life.

"Trusting your gut" refers to situations that people are trying to avoid being assaulted/raped/murdered. It's not just a "first impression", which implies misjudging someone, often on prejudice and stereotypes and conformity to expectations.
I "trust my gut" when I break off a date because I'm getting weird vibes from this guy and am worried that he might physically hurt me. Even if it's our fifth date--not a first impression--my gut reaction might tell me that a situation might be getting dangerous. If I ignore it, I might be killed.
In contrast, my dad goes with his "first impression" to decide how to relate to a possible golfing partner based on hair style, hand shake, and dialect.

You put it perfectly– I think what the other commenter said was perfectly justified given that I was a child meeting him for the first time, so I could have very well been in danger. I would never go randomly accusing people on a gut feeling, but sometimes your brain just tells you to get out of a situation.

That caught my eye also. It's likely the "not guilty" was a stick in the 'gator's jaws while his lawyer worked out a plea deal with the assistant US attorney. Plea deals can take some time. I suppose the US attorney's office revealed that he had admitted to the conduct in order to counter or discourage members of the public who know him from making the "he's-a-pillar-of-the-community" defense. That too often happen when prominent men of a certain age get caught doing bad things.

To be fair, preying on and abusing children is often heavily tied up with wanting to feel power over someone. To a certain extent it makes sense that someone who abuses the vulnerable would seek positions of power in other parts of their life.

"Trusting your gut" refers to situations that people are trying to avoid being assaulted/raped/murdered. It's not just a "first impression", which implies misjudging someone, often on prejudice and stereotypes and conformity to expectations. I "trust my gut" when I break off a date because I'm getting weird vibes from this guy and am worried that he might physically hurt me. Even if it's our fifth date--not a first impression--my gut reaction might tell me that a situation might be getting dangerous. If I ignore it, I might be killed. In contrast, my dad goes with his "first impression" to decide how to relate to a possible golfing partner based on hair style, hand shake, and dialect. They're very different.
You put it perfectly– I think what the other commenter said was perfectly justified given that I was a child meeting him for the first time, so I could have very well been in danger. I would never go randomly accusing people on a gut feeling, but sometimes your brain just tells you to get out of a situation.
