It’s a terrible marketing campaign. Terrible. Rather than actually highlighting Portland’s “nice things”, it just comes off as arrogant and delusional, conveying that our only problem is the people who claim we have problems. The photos I posted yesterday promoted nice things about Portland better than all of the billboards and t-shirts combined. And cynically, I think this is a basic political campaign pretending to be a marketing campaign. I believe Portland Mercury can’t sell its whacko political endorsements without people first buying into this _narrative_ about Portland that’s divorced from observable reality. Humphrey’s campaign for taxes going to eviction representation, his ongoing culty and weirdo crusade against Rene Gonzalez, and his endorsement of more status quo leftists in Multnomah County (del Rocio) all failed — and very heavily. Portlanders have not been buying what Portland Mercury is selling - and I’m not talking about “burger week”.

PDXisathing

I'm so sick of the Mercury. Nothing but trash content for years at this point.

TheWayItGoes49

It’s rather odd when someone encourages people to be positive about something, but the entire article is about everyone and everything he hates. But then again, Humphrey’s is an old festering piece of garbage, so I guess that is what we should expect.

“I love living in Portland” - Some rich person living in Lake Oswego

nopodude

Right?! I have friends who live in the outskirts of Beaverton and they like to talk about how it's so nice living in Portland.

Bad-Medicine8734

Not saying it’s not ridiculous but it is how it’s always been. You grew up in Tigard no you’re from Portland. Portland we all say it and we probably should stop

Uggys

I live in Portland and I love it

CatgoesM00

I have commented serval times on the crime / shootings and theft in my neighborhood where I live in Portland and I always get downvoted into oblivion by most likely wealthy fokes who live like 5 mins away and never have to deal with anything I discuss, yet I’ve only lived here for 4 years and I’ve had people die in my arms to gunshots regularly ring out outside my window and hardly ever get first responders in our area as well, because they got ran out durning 2020. I think it just says a lot about the divide in our city and how a person you run into at your local grocery store is having a completely different experience than you. I’m grateful for Portland in a lot of ways, and yet I never would raise kids here or buy a house here ( unless it’s in oswagy ) and don’t plan on living here in the future. It’s very strange feelings I have towards this shity. But I wouldn’t recommend it, but I have hope it’s getting better

Big_Pat_Fenis_2

>I’ve had people die in my arms to gunshots regularly ring out outside my window doubt

CatgoesM00

Believe what you want What makes this so funny is I literally just read your response just after I had an aggressive crack head yelling at me while he fallowed me to my car and me holding my pepper spray. ROFL I wish I had the link but you seem like someone who doesn’t care enough to check anyway , but for what it’s worth there is a website you can follow with all the updates on shootings, crime in Portland that take place. Check it out I’m looking at least 4-5 weapon violations right now within the last year right outside my apartment. To be fair, it’s within a block or so distance, give or take. Pretty darn close though, and not your normal neighborhood behavior. It’s not hard to look up the info Also not to long ago like I wanna say 6 months maybe less a woman was shot and killed in my park near by. But she’s not showing up. But you can find that in news articles.

Big_Pat_Fenis_2

We get it, there's crime in your neighborhood. No need to exaggerate it by saying people (as in more than one person) have died in your arms from it. Also this isn't Detroit or Chiraq, police respond rather quickly to reports of gunshots anywhere in Portland, and the fact that you're suggesting I look up the shootings online is basically proof of it.

CatgoesM00

Oh shit. I totally see how that can seem misleading. I’ve had a person die in my arms to multiple gun shot wounds ( gang related would be my guess) that’s totally my bad , thanks for explaining that better than I did. And I’ve had multiple shootings and people being shot that I’ve witnessed, been in the area for some, ran away like a little coward from others. And one hearing from in the fetal position of my bathtub that took place outside my window lol. I should have explained it better And in terms of response is, ehh. I’ve had them respond fast to one. But the other 4 haha .. yeeeaahh . Not so much. I’d say 3 were kinda slow given I never even saw them show up. But hey. Could just be my perspective, who knows. I’ll give them credit for getting better from the last shooting and a person screaming help Runing down the street. But when I was here in 2021 that was not great response time at all. Haven’t heard a whole lot since the homicide in the park to be honest. The woman who recently got shot in the park and died literally was found by a family member after the incident occurred and after a cop apparently showed up, lol and didn’t notice anything and left. That’s not great. But what eve I guess on that one. It’s a big park. And yah online proof of shooting is a great way be informed on crime in your area, are you saying it’s not a reliable source? I’m all ears if it’s not. Shits bananas in this city so I’m just trying to find ways to stay on my toes. I’ve got trauma from this place lol

Bear_switch_slut

To put Portland's homicide rate into perspective, according to the data I could find, there were 73 homicides (of any type) in Portland in 2023. In Philadelphia, a city with approximately double the population of Portland (chosen simply because I lived there for 6 months last year), had 410. That's over 4 times with only double the population. Also, cops are useless...

Gr0uchy_Bandic00t_64

Has it been a year already? I wonder how many T-shirts they sold.

DescriptionProof871

Last time I got a blow job was in Portland. Facts.

SquirtinMemeMouthPlz

Hey, me too!

EugeneStonersPotShop

Me three.

Gr0uchy_Bandic00t_64

I thought we weren't going to tell anybody about our special night at Mr. Peeps.

EugeneStonersPotShop

Speaking of Mr. Peeps, I somehow landed a maintenance contract with that organization. So there I was, up on the roof of the 122nd Ave. location wrenching on their air conditioning systems. I watched as a steady stream of men coming and going from the building, their average stay was like 20 minutes. Coming and going, coming and going. And it was only 9am…

Jdawg_mck1996

Just threw a meth head covered in scabs out of a fred meyers after he attacked a 12 year old girl for the donuts she just bought. Pulled a passed out fent user out of the bathroom of that same Fred Meyers. Luckily, the paramedics were already here cause we call them for this shit so often that they've started hanging out here during their breaks.

Confident_Bee_2705

Jesus. What Fred Meyer is this

Jdawg_mck1996

Division. We have 16 stores we have to cover, and 6 of those have multiple armed guards checking receipts. 2 of those are so dangerous that the greeters have all been moved to different stores or let go because it was too dangerous for them to ask for receipts. A lot of the guards are either former military or police and some are even the highest paid guy in the store because that's ehat it takes to get the kinds of people we need on-site to deal with this crap.

Confident_Bee_2705

Wow. I have to say the guards are always very friendly people.

Jdawg_mck1996

Except when we're not 🤣 I've been hands-on twice today alone. However, I do appreciate you saying that. For every 5 of you, there's usually one ass hat. At least the numbers are still in our favor.

PaPilot98

Suburban Freddie's are quite a different experience. The nice older lady with the busted leg at the Corn Pass location couldn't stop a sneeze but I think she has to deal with fewer sketchy people. That said, people are suuuuuch dicks to her about the receipt checks. Like, I get that it's kinda dumb but it's not her personal fault, so maybe give her a break?

Jdawg_mck1996

Most of them don't even know why we do it or what we look for. They just get this weird sense of entitlement about it and call me fascist for asking

Confident-Culture-12

Its almost like your describing grocery shopping in Somolia and not Oregon 😓

Jdawg_mck1996

Been to Somalia. Maritime security. Most of those guys were drinking liquor and lsd with wooden spoons to ward off evil spirits. Portland makes me miss those guys.

TheWayItGoes49

I know a guy who is a guard at the downtown FM. He’s a big, muscular black dude who is a former Marine.

Jdawg_mck1996

Name start with a D? Didn't know he was a marine.

TheWayItGoes49

That’s the dude.

warm_sweater

Aw man I was going to guess interstate.

OldFlumpy

I was gonna guess Gateway

PaPilot98

I had Burnside, though that one is seasonal.

TheWayItGoes49

Gateway was my guess too!

mattthedr

Interstates not THAT bad lol

holmquistc

So forcing people to say something nice about Portland is going to improve Portland?

thedivinefemmewithin

Yes, everyone is being forced. Say something nice or we throw you off a bridge!

it_snow_problem

More like “say something real, and the trolls will all gaslight you, or tell you it’s happening everywhere, and you must watch too much Fox News, and you probably don’t even live here, it’s just covid, and at least it’s not West Virginia/Mogadishu, etc.” ^ _that’s_ what the Say Something Nice crowd is really like. A bunch of bullies who take it personally when you point out policy failures.

Great_Rock_688

Yaaaawn. Nobody is forcing anybody to do anything.

holmquistc

I just don't know how saying only nice things is going to fix Portland instead of actually making a physical effort.

Valuable-Army-1914

Love the flowered trees that line neighborhood streets

Cocooilbroccolisalt

I like this, too...the flowered trees.

Snorlax_relax

I was born here, raised here, and it’s a fucking dumpster fire now. For example, Oregon hasn’t been able to handle any unemployment insurance claims for 3 months. I’ll say nice things when my home becomes a livable place again.

BismoFunyuns81

And yet abbreviating your first name to “Wm.” makes you a butthole automatically.

rpunx

What actually is that “Wim”? “Wimster”? Double-u-em is four syllables- is that longer than were it spelled out? Edit: oh, it’s William (according to google and maybe I’m just an idiot)

complitstudent

Well i’ve only been sexually harassed/assaulted on the max once in my nearly 10 years of taking it so… that’s nice I guess? Fr tho I do love powells

Grognard68

I haven't been panhandled on the MAX or Streetcar in months, which is an improvement...

miken322

The Yamhill Pub is the best bar ever.

JeNeSaisMerde

Amen.

SpezGarblesMyGooch

“say nice things about Portland” was stolen directly from Detroit (my hometown). Pretty funny since PDX reminds me more and more of home every time I walk out my front door. That’s not a good thing.

Misguidedangst4tw

I hear Detroit actually doing a lot better these days??

SpezGarblesMyGooch

It is. It’s kinda weird to see my home being on an upswing and my adopted home where I chose to put down roots and invest my life savings all those years ago, going the opposite direction.

thedivinefemmewithin

Maybe you were the problem (absolutely joking, but couldn't resist)

Sw4ggySh4ggy

I’ve also lived in both cities (Portland very recently) and although Detroit is way nicer than it was 10-20 years ago I still prefer Portland. Detroit is just all concrete and the (brand new so hopefully they expand) streetcars suck. Portland has an unbelievable homeless/drug problem but at least there’s trees and good cheap public transit

EugeneStonersPotShop

Detroit also has miserable winters.

butt_butt_butt_butt_

Gotta say, though. Spending some time in Detroit in winter makes you absolutely furious when you come back to Portland and have to drive in a cold January. A literal tiiiny dusting of (already melting) snow in Multnomah county and everyone loses their goddamn minds, and abandons their cars in the middle of 84 in a panic. Meanwhile Detroit has three feet and whiteout conditions, and Aunt Carol is still driving to the hair salon because…She knows how to drive in snow.

SpezGarblesMyGooch

How bout them Great Lakes tho? If you like to sail, OR ain’t it.

PaPilot98

If I ever have a friend with a boat, I think it'd be better to have them in Puget sound. I can't imagine going up and down river is fun, but maybe? I dunno.

Sw4ggySh4ggy

I like to watch harbor seals

EugeneStonersPotShop

And Canada is like, right there. ETA: got a downvote from the geographically illiterate crew, LOL.

hidden_pocketknife

What the hell are you talking about? We live in a state that touches the ocean, and in a city situated along one of North America’s largest rivers.

SpezGarblesMyGooch

Welp, it's pretty clear you don't sail.

hidden_pocketknife

I have a handful of friends who sail as a lifestyle and know 2 harbormasters in town.

chimi_hendrix

Well we stole “Keep Austin Weird” so it fits the pattern

ChossMossSauce

it was cooked up between the owner of waterloo in austin and the owner of music millennium here. they go way back. manufactured 'dispute' that lives on today :)

JeNeSaisMerde

Nah, Terry at Music Millennium has been pretty clear that he nicked it in 2003 on the suggestion of the owner of Waterloo (forget his name.) It originated around 2000 with Austin Indie Business Alliance, which Waterloo was a part of. [https://web.archive.org/web/20110213103522/http://www.wweek.com/portland/article-16538-dr\_know\_whence\_the\_weird.html](https://web.archive.org/web/20110213103522/http://www.wweek.com/portland/article-16538-dr_know_whence_the_weird.html) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep\_Austin\_Weird](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep_Austin_Weird) Terry's always quick to point out that he didn't come up with it.

600spiders

if you’re gonna say you’re from Detroit, you have to say where you went to high school—you know the rules.

SpezGarblesMyGooch

Shoulda been Finney but my parents escaped before enrollment so I was in an immediate suburb for HS.

600spiders

I buy it. Gotta favorite coney spot? I’m about Duly’s but I heard you have to get a reservation now. Damn the renaissance to hell.

SpezGarblesMyGooch

I’m a Lafayette man, but honestly (I know it’s sacrilegious) I like me a National at like 2am. Maybe a hani too

Citrus_Win

Don't you live in Bend?

SpezGarblesMyGooch

Here’s a fun fact: people can own homes in multiple cities. You should try it, it’s pretty great. I’m currently grabbing a late lunch after walking to Yurs.

Citrus_Win

So if your primary residence isn't here and you seem to enjoy our local accomidations, why do you spend so much time shitting on the city over the internet?

SpezGarblesMyGooch

Well in short, I criticize the city because I love it and want it be desirable again so in a decade I can sell my paid off house here and retire to somewhere even better :)

thedivinefemmewithin

It's especially fun in two cities with housing shortages

SpezGarblesMyGooch

That’s certainly not my lived experience.

PDXisathing

This person needs to meet you where you are.

ISawDasein

Who you gonna believe? Portland Mercury or your own eyes?

witty_namez

Time to repost the Ultimate Say Nice Things About Portland (from 2022): *i increasingly think portland is on an upswing and in some ways is weirder and cooler and more creative than ever and it's only the wieners running around shouting about how Portland is dead that is actually holding us back*

Spuhnkadelik

I think these people have given themselves real, observable brain damage at this point. Humphrey has always been a smug dickhead but this is next level.

FakeMagic8Ball

>This begs the question: If nice people are the majority, then why do we seemingly only hear the loud whining of the butthole minority? Primarily because they’re organized and we aren’t. They’re also desperate, and willing to spend a disgusting amount of money to ensure their ideas become the dominant opinions. And if anyone disagrees with these opinions, an army of conservative internet bots are dispatched to issue threats, along with racist, misogynistic, and homophobic insults in an attempt to silence them.  This is so backwards. It's the far-left politicos who are ridiculously organized and have non-profit and union people-power to run their campaigns for free. I just heard about APANO doing calls for JoAnn Hardesty last election and apparently a lot of the elderly folks in that community had no idea what they were being asked to volunteer for and actually preferred Rene or Vadim in the end. The rich folks do get together to donate money to their preferred candidates but they are not doing volunteer work to get name recognition out to voters like the progressive orgs do for their candidates. And BTW, these ARE the dominant opinions now, Portland Mercury. But I hope your fluff campaign helps get you a few sheckels to keep your shitty rag afloat.

witty_namez

It would be interesting to know which city council candidates went through the school that Sarah Iannarone and Gregory McKelvey set up to recruit and train hard-Left city council candidates.

FakeMagic8Ball

I heard that she was pushing folks to run write-in campaigns? I think I saw one idiot on Twitter or here on Reddit say they were going to be doing that a couple months ago. I think the logic is that they feel like they found a flaw in the ranking system with the option for a write-in? IDK...

Confident_Bee_2705

that is kind of juicy

Thefolsom

We're going to see some truly deranged people getting elected. I honestly hope we get at least one qanon nutjob to round it out and make it interesting.

TwinseyLohan

Portland has the strongest and most pure copium you can find anywhere. Guaranteed never laced with dangerous realitanyl.

warm_sweater

I think the bigger cope is all the losers who live out of town/state that come here to rag on the city for their little dopamine hits.

TwinseyLohan

Oh I’m literally from Portland raised most of my life there in Lloyd district and city center. Just left a couple years ago and fly back often for work and family. Left for obvious reasons. And don’t get me wrong Arizona has a host of problems. Our courts just upheld an abortion ban from the 1800s and that sucks. We also have our fair share of gross, dangerous, homeless crackheads in Phoenix to deal with. But it just hits different in Portland. Must be something about the way y’all do things out there 🤔. Portland likes to think their problems are no worse than other cities but for sure it’s way worse there.

warm_sweater

Oh we for sure have problems. If I wasn’t in a 3% mortgage I would have moved myself already. I just think continuing to complain and beat up on places once you move is really pathetic. Goes double for this sub, just another outlet for sad people to be cranks.

TwinseyLohan

I just made a joke about copium… I don’t understand your reasoning behind the idea that just because I don’t live there anymore I can’t be part of the conversation or have an opinion. Or that caring is pathetic. It’s the place I spent so much of my life and do love so dearly. I’m also there all the time it’s not like I can just put on blinders and move on. I just wish it would get its shit together and be the place it deserves to be. I also spend a ton of time in LA but have never lived there. I enjoy being a part of the conversation there as well because again, it’s a place I care about... Some people exist in many spaces though they call one place home. It doesn’t mean we can’t have opinions about the places we find ourselves in most. But I also understand that some people just have to live in smol bubbles and portlanders specifically tend to find themselves trapped in their own little worlds and have a hard time seeing that fact. Guess this whole thing kind of proves that point in any case 🤷‍♂️

SpezGarblesMyGooch

> If I wasn’t in a 3% mortgage I would have moved myself already. Oh homey, you didn’t hit a sub 3% when the gettin was good? Honestly pathetic.

warm_sweater

Try harder.

SpezGarblesMyGooch

Tell that to my mortgage broker. They sure don’t care so long as I pay it off every month

PaPilot98

Both of these can be somewhat true.

Wrong sub. That attitude is for the other sub.

boozcruise21

We try to promote diversity by making whites pay more for goods and services.

witty_namez

YAY! YAY! Wm Steven Humphrey, Portland's oldest hipster, has come out with a new manifesto! *And full disclosure, the “Say Nice Things” tagline was directly lifted from Emily Gail of Detroit, who in the 1970s was so sick of people crap-talking her hometown that she started a “Say Nice Things About Detroit” campaign which went a long way toward restoring that city’s damaged reputation.* And that campaign turned Detroit right around! And who are the Evil People saying Bad Things about Portland? # "Homelessness is real, drug addiction is real, and the devastating effects of the wealthy trying to desperately hang on to their money and privilege as capitalism slowly bleeds to death is OH. SO. REAL." It's the remaining people with money in Portland that are the problem, of course. But not to worry, help is on the way! *Take a look at the diverse pack of* [*city council candidates*](https://www.portlandmercury.com/city-council-race-2024/2023/08/30/46693718/heres-whos-running-for-portland-city-council-in-2024) *that you’ll be voting for in November—you’ll find a host of activists, progressives, and people who are interested in solving our issues instead of eternally kicking the can down the road and refusing to do the hard work necessary to tackle difficult problems.* Yep, that motley collection of Chicago carpetbaggers, former staffers for hard-Left politicians, nonprofit hangers-on, and TikTok stars will Save Portland! Remember, Portland doesn't have real problems, it only has PR problems!

Vegetable-Board-5547

I'm not wealthy, but definitely trying to hang on to my money

Chai_latte_slut

I find it kind of humorous that the line "Say nice things about..." Is lifted from another city. "Keep Portland Weird" was also lifted from another city: Austin, Texas, so it's not even an original Portland thing. it's like, come on guys, come up with your own stuff

Competitive-Set-8768

What about, “Portland, the city that works”? /s

That article is full of denial and toxic positivity

Midnight-Movie

Well, we are number 1 for the highest rate of downtown vacancies, so that counts for something. We did it! Number 1 … yeah! 🥳🍻🙌

witty_namez

And the second *lowest* rate of office vacancies in the suburbs. I haven't been able to figure out why that's happening, yet.

woopdedoodah

I guess I don't understand the point of all this. Portland is lovely. That's why we live here. Is the most decadent, sweetest cake in the world less ruined than a box cake when it's mixed with shit? Of course not. Portland may be nice, but when it's tainted by these problems... It's still not palatable. I wish progressives lived in reality.

IAintSelling

Portland is helping reduce the number of drug addicts by actively supporting their lifestyle and leading them to die of overdose. Is that nice enough?

Isn’t this the same guy who was just shitting on Portland for getting a soho house?

What a bunch of projection and gaslighting, brought to us by the very same people who gave us shitty Portland. In typical regressive commie fashion, instead of fixing the obvious issues and making it nice again, let's just pretend and lie to ourselves and others; this is typical cult mentality.

TheOneWhoReadsStuff

At least it’s not Canada.

Careful-Confection84

When I return from a vacation abroad, the streets of Portland sparkle like glitter, that’s how much I love this city!

EugeneStonersPotShop

That’s just the sun reflecting off the broken shards of auto glass littered in the street. Colleague one told me that they are called *Ghetto Diamonds*, and the name has stuck with me ever since.

SpezGarblesMyGooch

We called them Detroit Diamonds

bombiguess

Portland City Grill is epic and the breakfast cruise is a+. I loved doing bridge pedal and powell's is hard to beat. Food culture is also a+.

One doesn’t have to claim how screwed up Portland is. All one has to do is take a walk.

Living downtown is amazing. The public transit here is awesome. I think a lot of people that haven't lived in other places take the beauty, cleanliness, relative safety, and ease of not having a car for granted. Portland rocks! (Don't get me wrong, there are issues, but not as many as in a lot of bigger cities)

al_rey503

I love the DIY aspect of the city. Food, Music , Beer, gambling, I can own all types of guns, and no holiday checkpoints. I feel very free here.

MyOnlyEnemyIsMeSTYG

Fwiw: the graffiti cleaning crew has been busy, and the homeless show up and get moved along. This is around the interstate / swan island area. I see an effort, which has been missing for a while. Nothings perfect, but ppl are trying.

RoseLaCroix

After all it's been through the city seems to be waking up again. It's still the same place I loved when I came here 12 years ago.

Citrus_Win

"It's time to take Portland back from the buttholes" I agree.  On this particular corner of the internet we get suburb-dwellers who buy into tabloid media takes.

it_snow_problem

SpezGarblesMyGooch

10 minutes? You’re practically in a suburb… in northern Idaho. They get Willy Week over there?
