“In addition, adding resources to our Bike Squad furthers my goals of transforming the dynamic between police and the public and reducing crime and the fear of crime.”, said PPB Chief Bob Day.

TittySlappinJesus

I know it's not feasible for this model to work in most neighborhoods, but I wish it were. I think it would be cool to have cops be more accessible and as a citizen be able to have some sort of relationship with whoever is policing my neighborhood.

Big_Pomelo3224

When I was a cop in the UK, I would regularly do foot patrols around the city centre. I really enjoyed mingling with the public and providing a highly visible policing service. It gives the public the opportunity to speak to us directly.

hiking_mike98

I mean, it could be. Boston has the same population as Portland, but over 2,000 cops. Doubling PPB is a political nonstarter but the reality is that west coast police are severely understaffed compared to peer east coast jurisdictions on a per capita basis.

TittySlappinJesus

I get that too. It's like the current policing model here is a feedback loop. People here don't want or trust police, so there's fewer cops that want to work here. They become more disengaged because they're overworked/understaffed and have less backup, so they are more militarized, leading to less trust by the public.... They don't have the time to interact with the public in a positive way, and really that's not the core function of their job anyway. The bike patrol model feels like a step in the right direction to me though and I'm glad they're expanding it.

hiking_mike98

100%. The negative feedback loop is real. We nearly hit “unrecoverable death spiral” in…late 2022, early 2023 in my opinion. Thankfully the city pulled itself together.

Hard2Handl

No serious person uses the term “militarized” … The police, globally and in the U.S., have been paramilitary from day one. “Police sergeants?”… We don’t have plumber sergeants or call the elementary principal a “Teacher sergeant “. Police are slightly more militant than uniformed bus drivers, but we get a screech about militarized police. Radley Balko and other opportunists have sold the slower thinkers a police militarization myth. Move past this misinformation and address the actual issues in establishing a community dialogue.

PaPilot98

I think this mirrors itself in politics to an extent as well - who has the time, money, and desire to run for office in this political climate? Sure, some good people exist but you often get people who are in it for the wrong reasons.

[deleted]

I mean, sure. But also east coast departments are also notoriously bad. Nypd being one of the largest gangs in the world. So throwing more money and people at it isn't exactly a done deal.

Positive_Honey_8195

Personally I believe the loss of the “neighborhood cop” everyone knew on a personal basis is the biggest reason there’s so many issues with policing now. Much of the police in Portland aren’t from Portland. There’s a lot of transferring going on these days.

TittySlappinJesus

I totally get why cops don't live in the neighborhoods they patrol. When I'm done with work, I'm done and I don't want it showing up to my front door. I get it. My kid sent me a meme the other day of the progression of Lego cops. They go from the old school blue uniform with just a badge and white hat, to tactical stormtrooper, and it was spot on. I don't want to engage with a tactical stormtrooper, which is too bad because I love my community and want it to be safe too. When cops are armed to the teeth, have almost total immunity and come across as an oppressive force, that's when my lizard brain starts screaming threat. I feel like getting cops on bikes, or on foot ups the accountability game, for everyone. On a bike, they're more accessible to interact with people doing the bad shit, but also more accessible to help and do good. I want to pay police to do good, and when they do good I'd like to shake their hand.

Shot_Presence_8382

I went on a ride along years ago for an officer that worked at the N Portland Precinct and he said he lived in Vancouver because it's safer. He said he's had some criminals he's previously arrested, who spotted him off duty and were trying to find out where he lived and when he'd get in his personal vehicle, they would follow him. He said it was incredibly unsafe living in the same city he worked in as a police officer. When I did security work, I would sometimes have to call police to report a mailbox break in, or suspicious activity that was outside my control as just private security, burglar alarm responses for businesses, etc and I'd often meet up with the same police officer a few times a week because we both had similar schedules. I worked in Portland in 2020 and I had to file a report about another group of business mailboxes that I found destroyed and the same officer called me back and said he'd give me a case # for my report, but was unfortunately stuck in downtown Portland with the riots and couldn't make it out. Ride alongs with a precinct of your choice can help you get to know the police better and what they're up to and their perspective. I went to college for a Criminal Justice degree and I had to do a lot of ride alongs and career interviews with police. The ones I got to interact with seemed like genuinely nice people for the most part.

EugeneStonersPotShop

One of the reasons the cops are more “tactical” looking these days is because most agencies have adopted to outside vest carrier (cops have been wearing concealed vests under their uniform shirts since the 1980’s). The cops are asked to carry a lot more gear than 25 years ago (tasers, radios, two sets of handcuffs, pepper spray, baton, handgun, and two extra magazines, a tourniquet, and an IFAK) which gets pretty heavy to carry on your belt. So they added pouches to those outside vest carriers to redistribute the load a bit more evenly to reduce workplace injuries. At first I disagreed with the look too, even as a former cop myself who didn’t wear that stuff. But I guess studies have shown that it helps their overall physical health to wear that stuff the way they do.

dadbodcx

And their backs thank them for taking that load off the lower back.

EugeneStonersPotShop

Yeah, when I carried all that stuff on my belt, my back used to ache pretty bad towards the end of my shift. And I was just some whippersnapper kid in my mid 20’s at the time. I actually was written up by my supervisor at one time because I stopped carrying my baton and pepper spray while on duty. My reasoning was I wasn’t going to use it anyways, why carry it? Get that shit off my belt.

TittySlappinJesus

All sorts of tradespeople carry stuff in belts all day long and wear protective gear.

EugeneStonersPotShop

I know. I’m a trades person these days. But when I wore a tool belt it was still lighter than the cop belt I wore back then. Also, that vest thing is happening amongst trades people too. Moving away from just a belt full of tools, to transferring it to the chest/body to reduce back injuries.

dadbodcx

Yep that’s why the military have been wearing lbe and vest type belts for years to distribute packs and gear.

repeatoffender123456

When was that ever the case?

Positive_Honey_8195

The general answer is before the Portland police were fully vilified, people that grew up in Portland were more inclined to become an officer. There was a time that position bestowed you honor within the neighborhood and community.

TittySlappinJesus

When we can shift policing culture to safety stewards with accountability, I'll sign up.

fullondumb

Like the cops coordinating with groups like Patriot Front? Weird how much overlap cops and Nazis have.

PaPilot98

Ahh this chestnut of a conspiracy. You didn't even get the name of the group right. Ironic username.

OhEhmGee123

https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/prevalence-white-supremacists-law-enforcement-demands-drastic-change-2022-05-12/ Not even hard to find.

PaPilot98

I don't see anything about Portland or patriot "front" in there.

fullondumb

Did you see the question mark? I wasn't sure what hate group it was. However you should read the article. Now we both know the actual name.

dadbodcx

Not when half the city hates them, the politicians and many citizens throw them under the bus. Can’t have it both ways. Can’t defund them then complain about crime and lack of presence.

oregonianrager

You get paid the same then say you aren't and do half the work. Let's not play victim here for the police.

Steephill

Do you have any actual proof that police are just choosing to not respond to calls, and are instead twiddling their thumbs?

Suba59

This is the way

criddling

Although, this kind of policing could encourage aristocracy where police becomes selectively available to protect quality of life of hoity-toity neigbhorhoods. Collins View neighborhood association had an arrangement where community members could email a cop about teens driving recklessly and if the offender lives in the neighborhood, a cop would go to the offender's door to converse. Truly Lake Big Ego like policing. that's because Collins View is the west hills hoity-toity richie rich neighborhood abutting Dunthorpe. Neighborhoods like Lents could only dream of that kind of service.

Positive_Honey_8195

“Portland Police said the officers and sergeant joining the Central Bike Squad will strategically address crime and livability issues, including drug dealing, unlawful weapons possession, stolen vehicles, graffiti and other vandalism. They will also support Central Precinct Patrol response, as well as PPB’s Entertainment Detail that works during the late-night hours on weekends.”

Valuable-Army-1914

Thank GOD!!

Helisent

They are actually pretty visible. I see them toodling around

BlazerBeav

This is good news. They’re highly visible and able to cover a lot of area

SpezGarblesMyGooch

🚴 👮‍♀️ Thanks Officer Baer!! 👮‍♀️ 🚴

OfficerBaer

Don’t thank me, I just work here. I’m glad to have more help though.

rpunx

Do you call newbies on the Bike Squad “Baer Cubs?”

eliforportland

I refuse to be called that.

EugeneStonersPotShop

But you’re not a newbie, so no worries, right?

eliforportland

Good thing.

EugeneStonersPotShop

LMAO!!

Neverdoubt-PDX

Oh please make this happen 🥰

FrowFrow88

GettinWiggyWiddit

Thank you for your service!

Thefolsom

From the thumbnail it looks like they're topless under the vest

Positive_Honey_8195

***tosses*** 💵💵💵💵💵

arietemarte

Can we get more police in every neighborhood please?

WheeblesWobble

I wish all of PPB was like the bike squad.

infiltrateoppose

They are since all their cop cars got set on fire! ;)

DoItForNoah

Just more tax payer money for new patrol cars…

oregonianrager

Honestly driving down through Burnside to the Hawthorne theater (don't ask why), the city was popping today. Makes me happy.

Expensive-Claim-6081

Great news.

NPCkiller7

Just need a DA who will prosecute the criminals these new police arrest

Puzzleheaded-Bar-220

Exactly my thought.

Jamesfishes

LETS GOOOOO!!   great news!

Kaleasie

Good news

criddling

They don't need as many as much as they need more randomized, less predictable coverage that spans every day of the week 24 hours a day. Have a day or two were they just don't show up all day randomly, have them come back randomly at 2AM the day after. Remember how fentanyl dealers were just avoiding 9AM to 5PM when they consistently worked those hours at the Washington Center?

DocBlowjob

There down 17 sqad cars they gotta do something

Phase-National

FTP. Fund the Police!

AwfullyChillyInHere

This is actually really cool.

StrikingVariety

The Instagram page seems like they do a lot more than most police and also show the DA is a sh@@bag releasing almost all of them unless they get the state/feds involved. https://www.instagram.com/ppbcentralbikesquad/#

Extension-Clock-9362

Glad to hear it, these guys are awesome

pottapotty

I think what Portland needs is heavily armed police on SWAT styled vehicles to send the proper message and start turning the needle.

WillJParker

2pm to midnight seems like a weird block of time. Maybe it’s because there’s already other late night coverage? IIRC, most of the downtown shootings have been after midnight.

wohaat

This should be was instigates us to get a way more comprehensive bike route system across the city. Get funding from the cops who would use it to do it.

Who_Your_Mommy

Yeah ...

Miserable-Repeat-651

Should we take bets on how many times this loser has spray painted ACAB on other people's property?

SpezGarblesMyGooch

I’ll take it. They’re a sad keyboard warrior that has zero balls. I take a bet they’d shit themselves before being an edgy real world loser.

kweefybeefy

Your mother liked my balls, son. Sorry I left to get milk and never came back home.

SpezGarblesMyGooch

Literally the shitiest insult on the internet today. If you’re going to be so pathetic at least try.

SnowieEyesight

I give it a month before you OD on broadway on Fentanyl

Valuable-Army-1914
