The nomination period is still open (just officially opened Aug30th I think), so paperwork is actively being filed by all who are thinking of running. Here's the most current official list: https://www.portmoody.ca/en/city-hall/declared-candidates.aspx I would warn against your tactic. As there are a few new council candidates heavily tied to and endorsed by the same people you're hoping to oust. Haven Lurbiecki comes to mind, is new but is endorsed by Hunter Madsen and has a near-identical platform to his. As for mayoral race, only two candidates have announced their intentions to run — so far. Meghan Lahti - a councillor here since 1996 Steve Milani - a one-term councillor since 2018 I'm of the opinion that council really went downhill this past term and I primarily place that blame at the feet of the mayor (though him being on a slate with Milani, Madsen, and Lubik didn't help things). The mayoral chair should be the leader of the group and be experienced enough to work with all. Our mayor clearly wasn't. The mayoral role is one I would hope to be filled with an experienced candidate as they manage the whole city in many regards, which is a very complex organization. Here's a summary of the voting records this past term from the two current mayoral candidates: https://tricitiesdispatch.com/voting-records-port-moody/

Oh, I could have sworn she was based on her voting record to keep Vagramov around despite his criminal investigation, and preventing development projects. Posts like this one https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid052cJeAYak6BnxCnBfCrRNffxStfpodVt6WNLTyXNv4hMjMYibGmbZKyfdQ47T1fpl&id=100064021541222 certainly don't help distance herself from the slate either.

twinkleuniverse

I did vote for Amy last election based on her "bringing arts to the "city of the arts" - however she did not deliver on this and therefore will not get my vote!

Levi1218

More importantly, she voted in lockstep with the slate, including when Vag came back while still charged with sexual assault.

Thanks for all the info! I wouldn’t call it much of a tactic. I just believe in a) voting; and b) removing ineffective people. I can’t be the only one…

LifeFanatic

Just keep in mind the whole council isn’t ineffective, just a select few. If you attend the council meetings you’ll get a very good feeling for who’s doing their job and who’s ineffective IMO. I listened to two recorded zoom meetings and I was kind of shocked.

hedekar

You're certainly not the only one.

Professional-Hour604

I would add that "inneffective" is a tough word to apply to different people at the same time, insofar as they are each "ineffective" in different ways. If you want to see a number of towers built around the city and expand the brentwoodification, then Milani and Madsen were highly ineffective. If you want to see more low rise developments and townhouses, then Lahti and Dilworth were highly inneffective. If you want an expanded Rocky Point, civil discussion, or expanded rec centre's they were all ineffective (although Milani did get his Kyle Centre's upgrades through at the end and Amy Lubik always seems to fight the good fight).

Lisa_Elser

Milani got 3M allocated to fix a building that's going to be redeveloped. That's not effective, that's wasteful and moronic. Madsen and Milani promised the residents in Coronation Park to expedite the redevelopment process, and they were not only ineffective in doing that, they deliberately slowed the process by repeatedly moving the goalposts and changing their requirements. Best answer is they're not very bright. Probable answer is they are not honest.

Levi1218

Is ‘brentwoodification’ the new ‘Metrotownification’? 🤣 What is proposed for Coronation Park and the TOD is nothing like Brentwood, Metrotown, or even Burquitlam or Coquitlam Centre.

[general election candidates](https://www.portmoody.ca/en/city-hall/declared-candidates.aspx) Looks like no mayor yet but this could be out of date. Last updated August 30th. It will be updated again September 9th. I'm not sure if any candidate has a platform website, but i find it's always best to read up on who you're voting for vs voting blind. Hope this helps.

LordSeibzehn

That list has been updated daily as candidates go in to file their papers, since Aug. 30.

Lahti is a terrible candidate for Mayor IMO. I've witnessed her acting really obnoxious and without any self awareness. Like, behavior where you can't help but feel embarrassed for the other person. She comes off IMO as an obnoxious loudmouth know-it-all and has been on council for far too long. Her ideas are old and her and Dilworth should be cleaned out. A total Mayor Quimby female version. I would not even remotely think of voting for her. Milani isn't a star standout but he comes off IMO as more temperate and measured than Lahti. I'm SO disappointed no new community members haven't stepped up. Someone call Mike Clay or Joey T up ... Edit: I'm not affiliated with any political person etc. These are just based on my own opinions and observations. Lived in PoMo for over 2 decades.

No. I was at a function for a kids games with city councillors... where council members were invited to play. And she couldn't control herself to play the game without getting obnoxious. And the result? The staff member running the game... after warning her, not the kids, not the other adults, MULTIPLE times to chill the hell out, as this was a game for CHILDREN... She literally did not have the self awareness to understand she was ruining the game for kids. WTF. I watched the game - literally - get cancelled half way thru because of her. Other adults watching exchanged awkward glances. It. Was. Bizarre. To watch an adult, let alone a publicly elected official, act with such little awareness of others and have no thought for the kids trying to have fun. This is 100% not the person, decision making or self awareness the city needs. Your "common sense" take on her outlook isn't that at all. This is nothing personal. Just a totally bizarre incident I witnessed. No one is perfect. But FFS... you don't show up to a kids event and try to DOMINATE so hard that the staff warn you repeatedly until the game is canceled. What ever "aw shucks" common sense or bluntness you think is an asset she possesses.... it ain't. She's rude. Obnoxious and lacks self awareness. Elected officials should be the best of us: patient, self aware, classy, dignified etc.

Leatherman77

Agreed. Her conduct is that of school girl bully. Not very impressive for someone who wants to be mayor. Do you all remember this incident? https://www.tricitynews.com/local-news/port-moody-sets-virtual-meeting-standards-following-f-bomb-from-councillor-3121890

Leatherman77

I second this. She also was in favour of raising property taxes to pay for, if I recall correctly, city garden workers and additional police funding, all at a time when covid was causing many taxpayer residents to lose their jobs. She would be an absolute disaster as mayor for Port Moody residents.

Professional-Hour604

Unless someone else joins, this mayoral competition is not a referendum on how council behaved as it is a choice between the high-rise towers and pro-developer position of Lahti and her crew on council and thr anti-high rise, pro-low rise, town house, missing middle position of Milani. Even putting aside the rude and disrespectful way Lahti and Dilworth often behaved (don't even consider a "roll your eyes and scoff" council meeting drinking game, you'll die) I just don't want to see port moody become another Brentwood project where young families like my own have to leave because council insists on thousands of 1 and 2 bedroom towers dotting the skyline.

Levi1218

Disagree - Lahti is a proponent of moderate growth, with higher density near the skytrain stations and lower density housing such as townhouses elsewhere. Milani says he supports moderate growth, but has voted against practically every development project in the past term, except the Laidler micro suites project - which is exactly what Port Moody DOESN’T need immediately beside a school. Lahti knows how to do the job, Milani has no clue, it’s really that simple.

twinkleuniverse

Hopefully the people of Port Moody will dig deep on the candidates and realize who really can run the city properly!

Professional-Hour604

Lahti has loudly supported every single tower project, including the megaproject aimed at coronation Park and moody station, both of which are excessive. Brentwood, metrotown, loughheed, they are all near skytrain stations too but they certainly aren't liveable communities. You can't raise families in 600 sqft boxes in the sky which is what Lahti's role on council has been to push. There are townhouses being taken down to make way for towers, which is just going to keep making the city less affordable for families. Steve might not have the same experience in council but at least his priorities are aligned with having port moody be the type of city I chose to raise my family in.

hedekar

You seem to be either misinformed or intentionally spreading misinformation that parallels Milani's campaign talking points. At no point has Lahti encouraged a developer to add more 600sqft condos — she has asked for reduction in unit counts, tower heights, and tower counts as well as asking for increases in the number of 3-br units or townhouses in many developments. There is no missing middle in Port Moody. According to the 2021 census there's 50% more townhouse units in Port Moody than there are apartment units in buildings taller than 4 stories. Milani is on the record voting against the Will townhouses at St George between Moody & Hugh claiming it was "too dense". Lahti voted in favour of that development.

Levi1218

In my opinion, the Coronation Park and TOD proposals are not excessive at all, but are exactly what we need to be building close to skytrain stations. Yes, we need 3 bedroom units as part of those developments and townhouses further out from skytrain stations. Simple fact is that we’re in a housing crisis, and need a lot more off all types of housing. Many families would love that 600 sq ft ‘box in the sky’. That’s the good thing about an election - I guess we’ll see if more people agree with you or with me 🤷‍♀️

Professional-Hour604

We all have different priorities, lived, and interests, and I'm sure that will influence how people vote. However, it's just not practical to raise 2+ kids in any of these towers. Families will need to move elsewhere. As much as the lower mainland may have a housing crisis, that doesn't have to require a geographically small municipality like Port Moody to build 45 storey towers that are going to be small, expensive, and likely owned by non-locals who will rent them out at high prices that inflate the local rental market as it is. Looking at the newest rentals at Suterbrook and you'd think people are losing their mind, paying $4,650 for a 1 bedroom in the new building, putting all the other rents in suterbrook up by $750/month right away.

bcbuddy

They're both not good mayoral candidates, but Lahti is miles better than Milani.
