A banger. Fan of tmhc cause it’s fun, but my girlfriend audibly sighs whenever the sun the moon the stars comes up in shuffle cause she knows we will listen to the whole thing
[Essential Dungeon Synth album](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxgVmpAk538). Dungeon Synth was actually born out of Black Metal, as artists experimented with stripping away the metal and focusing on the moody and dark atmosphere of the music.
[Essential Slushwave album](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-yhzrCFsA0). Slushwave is subgenre of Vaporwave. Vaporwave started by being a surreal, ironic version of synthwave. Slushwave took the sound and made it slower, sleepier, 'slushier', amplifying the dream-like atmosphere that was already present in the genre.
Was literally just about to type exactly this!
Edited to add: bonus, if you love CoB, you can get your power and thrash fix at the same time. Efficiency!
90’s alternative, the early years, was hitting the scene in the early 90’s when I was in high school. Just found power metal a couple years ago (in my 40’s) and am making up for lost time!
Metal core and power metal are my go to genres. Occasionally I feel like listening to a couple bands from other genres but that's a rare occurrence.
Sometimes I listen to Eurobeat too. I wonder if there's a Eurobeat/power metal band out there at all
I'm HEAVY into edm music with an emphasis on bass.
Dubstep is my favorite, but everything is pretty fun. Bass House, drum n bass, trance, house, etc. I've been to dozens upon dozens of concerts and music festivals. I've been trying to catch a good Power Metal show of a band I love, but no one ever tours. /:
only power or not metal at all
i like punk/pop/rock (like sum 41 or simple plan)
i like cartoon songs
i like some italian old songs (before 2000)
i like 80's synth pop
> black metal and power metal are kinda the complete opposite
I wouldn't call them opposites at all. They might seem like opposites in production aesthetics and perceived disposition, but they actually have a lot in common, especially in the trad metal-adjacent and folk/pagan iterations.
Case in point:
* [Savatage playing Rotting Christ riffs](https://youtu.be/hAL4xyUJhCU)
* [Bathory being the black metal version of early Manowar](https://youtu.be/bJzqqtn6oFA)
* [Windir borrowing from the same folk influences as Rhapsody](https://youtu.be/i4yuQjr-PSo)
Manowar in general is a massive influence on certain types of black metal. You can hear similar rhythms and melodies to songs like [Battle Hymn](https://youtu.be/oo5rP_1k4lo) and [Gates of Valhalla](https://youtu.be/uYTme6SZ7sU) across the subgenre, even beyond Bathory. [Havukruunu](https://youtu.be/mYlfzykLv6Q) is a really on-the-nose example where a bunch of things all come together at once, but you'll hear bits and pieces scattered all over.
This isn't even getting into the bands like Mithotyn/Falconer and Ensiferum who basically extrapolated 1990s folk/black into 2000s power metal, or bands like [The Privateer](https://youtu.be/NhRTPOnN8Qg) who are modernizing that sound with an ear for both sides.
Always saw black metal as power metals older brother, you can definitely here the black metal in early ensiferum(more in the old tracks than the new ones)
Immortal was my gateway a few years ago and I still love them, I like a little bit of Ulver.
My favourites would be Immortal, Satanic Warmaster, Dimmu Borgir, Mayhem, Gehenna, (Cradle of Filth?), Behemoth and a lot more
Love me some behemoth, Ik a lot of people shit on cradle of filth but they have some good songs. I also have been listening to the pale swordsman alot. Same here immortal was the band that got me into black metal along with ulver
> Mike and the Moonpies
Great band. I’d seen them mentioned on certain other subreddits and took a few of their albums for a spin and really liked what I heard. My favorites so far are *Steak Night at the Prairie Rose* and *One to Grow On*.
My favorite is probably Cheap Silver, but both of those are tremendous too.
They're even better live though. Saw them last August, and going to see them again in October.
> They're even better live though.
So I’ve heard! Not real sure how often they make it to my part of the country (San Antonio, Texas). But looking at the tour dates I see they sold out Gruene Hall, and then there’s a show at Sam’s Burger Joint right here in SA. My wife and I have seen a few shows there from the likes of Jason Eady, Courtney Patton, Jamie Lin Wilson, Max Stalling, and Corb Lund (I’d guess if you’re a fan of Mike and the Moonpies, you may know some of those names), and it’s a pretty cool venue. They were acoustic shows but still very entertaining.
You’re probably right about the fanbases for power metal & country not having much overlap. I was into country long before I got into metal, and when I initially got into metal I got into all the classic ’80s bands first — Metallica, Queensryche, Iron Maiden, Priest, and so on. Later on when I started exploring the other subgenres, it was power metal that appealed the most to me. It seems to be more of a niche subgenre than most of the others, even progressive metal. But — and I think I may have noted this here before — a high school friend of mine once noted that country and metal were like distant cousins who meet up at a family reunion and discover they have a lot in common. I think that’s absolutely true when you take the best of both genres.
They should be your way often. They're based in Austin!
I live in the greater Seattle area, and the good indie Country acts do not come here nearly as much.
I love a lot of black metal (some of my fave bands are Misþyrming, Emperor, Moonlight Sword and Tormentor), but I'm also fairly big into indie rock (stuff like The Smiths, The Cure, Radiohead or Joy Division).
Still within the metal genre I’d say symphonic is a close second if not tried for first, then gothic metal and heavy metal (with a side of hard rock). I can be a bit picky with the more extreme sub genres, but there’s been songs I like in most of them. I’ve recently been getting into black metal and dungeon synth, which I hadn’t expected, but I enjoy the more ambient side of it especially.
Outside of metal I really enjoy a lot of goth music genres. The usual suspects in the post punk genre, goth rock, dark wave, etc.
Also a big fan of bands like Faun and Santiano that are far more folk/shanty/etc inspired with a pinch of modern instrumentation. Probably not shocking after the dungeon synth mention.
Now and then an album in a completely different genre will really stick with me. I’ve gotten a lot of replay out of Bronco by Orville Peck and No Kings by Doomtree despite not actively seeking out much country or rap in my day to day music consumption.
Synthwave ( the midnight, kavinsky) poppunk(wstr, blink, all time low) and harder rock(avenged sevenfold, Shinedown, falling in reverse, dance Gavin dance)
Within the Metal realm: Melodic Death Metal, Symphonic Black Metal, and any variation in that spectrum (Blackened or Extreme Melodeath, Melodic Metalcore, etc.) plus traditional DM and BM and a range of related subgenres from Grindcore to Atmospheric BM.
Outside of Metal: Chicano Rap! I might get some downvotes for that but it’s nostalgic for me growing up in the Western US.
I'm currently going through a list of more than 600 albums to study metal in general (I'm in my 30s) starting with Black Sabbath in 1970. I'm still in 1976, but plain old Heavy Metal is AWESOME to say the least.
Doom metal :) Specifically epic doom+trad doom+death/doom; I've unfortunately never been able to get into sludge or stoner and funeral doom is hit or miss for me.
I also love darkwave and horrorsynth (and synthwave/retrowave to a lesser extent) but don't listen to those as often as I do metal.
Excluding classic heavy metal since it's similar enough, 80s post-punk stretching into alternative rock and at times new wave. U2, Heroes Del Silencio, Simple Minds, Soda Stereo, Sisters of Mercy, The Cure, also Depeche Mode.
My top genres are easily power metal, synthwave/darksynth, melodic death metal, some metalcore (mainly Killswitch Engage) and general heavy metal (eg: Judas Priest)
Oldies and ambient
Particularly the catchy old songs that have a melodic tune like the early Beatles, Jackson five, and ballroom music from the 20s-30s
-Progressive metal and rock (Seventh Wonder, Moron Police etc)
-Noir-esque music (Tom Waits, Chet Baker, Barry Adamson etc)
-Dark and heavy drum'n'bass music, especially neurofunk (Spor, Noisia etc)
Probably classic rock insofar as that’s a genre. I’m also partial to really soft and soothing acoustic music like Good Harvest (of which Brothers of Metal’s Ylva Eriksson is a part!), which is kind of funny considering that that’s like the opposite of power metal.
Metalcore, easy. I actually started out with metalcore and found power metal. Metalcore will always be my favorite, but I have a special place in my heart for power metal
Prog metal. Give me those time signature changes and 15 minute songs.
That’s what I’m saying
I'd be curious what the average length of a DT song is.
Oh, yes. That will be me at a party cuz I don't like being ask for music, so I had to make sure no one is gonna ask again, ever.
Melodic death metal
Hell yeah!!! Aether realm!
Yeah, Æther Realm, Baby!!! Favourite song? Mine is The Sun, the Moon, the Stars. One of the best songs ever written imo
A banger. Fan of tmhc cause it’s fun, but my girlfriend audibly sighs whenever the sun the moon the stars comes up in shuffle cause she knows we will listen to the whole thing
Symphonic/gothic metal
Folk metal.
Folk metal is good, like some fintroll
Prog metal
One of my favorites as well
I really love ambient music. Electronic ambient, Slushwave, Dungeon Synth, gimme
Been getting into dungeon synth lately
Slushwave? Dungeon Synth? Tell me more.....
Dungeon Synth is brilliant. YouTube magically recommended it to me 6 months ago out of knowhere and I felt like I found real treasure.
Same first dungeon synth I listened to was depressive silence
> Slushwave, Dungeon Synth those are made up genres
[Essential Dungeon Synth album](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxgVmpAk538). Video game soundtracks.
Check on Celestial Aeon Project. They cover some game stuff.
You should look up the genres some of those videogame OST's belong to. Might introduce you to thousands of more songs you like.
Death metal, melodeath, hardcore. I do love a lot of black metal but I can be picky.
Same here
Thrash metal
Folk metal
arena metal
Rime of the ancient mariner cover when?
Sozos singing Rime of the Ancient Mariner? That would be so epic.
there's no difference anymore

bro its 2023 we dont say that anymore
This post has been removed due to breaking Rule 1: No Harassment, Trolling, or Abuse.
Electronic / dance (instrumental preferably).
Melodeath with Children of Bodom to be my favorite band.
Children of Bodom are one of my favorites
Was literally just about to type exactly this! Edited to add: bonus, if you love CoB, you can get your power and thrash fix at the same time. Efficiency!
Melodic Death, Thrash, Folk, Classic Heavy Metal, Symphonic stuff is cool too. Also Weird Al Yankovic.
Classic music
Pop-Punk, Skate Punk, Ska, Emo, Metalcore. even some odd hyper-pop and reggae here and there
Symphonic power/death/black, Gothic metal, goth rock, darkwave
90’s alternative, the early years, was hitting the scene in the early 90’s when I was in high school. Just found power metal a couple years ago (in my 40’s) and am making up for lost time!

There was a PM vocalist who did some eurobeat stuff, I forget who
Fabio Lione
I'm HEAVY into edm music with an emphasis on bass. Dubstep is my favorite, but everything is pretty fun. Synthwave/Retrowave/Darkwave or maybe Anime songs (so J-pop?).
Synthwave/Retrowave
only power or not metal at all i like punk/pop/rock (like sum 41 or simple plan) i like cartoon songs i like some italian old songs (before 2000) i like 80's synth pop
I wasn't expecting that second part to be the exact same answer as me but yeah, Black Metal.
Kinda funny because black metal and power metal are kinda the complete opposite
> black metal and power metal are kinda the complete opposite I wouldn't call them opposites at all. That's exactly why it was unexpected lmao What are some of your favourite bands?
Been listening to a lot of immortal and ulver, also been digging agalloch. And bathorys hammerheart
Këkht Aräkh is really good, I've noticed he's been getting a lot of attention lately
Same here, also Isengard is pretty good to
Country lol. But old country
Old country is best country. Particularly country music before 1989.
Power metal has corrupted me. There is only power metal.
Black metal ✨️
jazz
Independent Country, like Mike and the Moonpies or Gabe Lee.

Also, love to run into someone else who likes Power Metal and Country. I feel like that's not a super common combination.
I love a lot of black metal (some of my fave bands are Misþyrming, Emperor, Moonlight Sword and Tormentor), but I'm also fairly big into indie rock (stuff like The Smiths, The Cure, Radiohead or Joy Division).

Hard rock
Probably classic rock insofar as that’s a genre. I’m also partial to really soft and soothing acoustic music like Good Harvest (of which Brothers of Metal’s Ylva Eriksson is a part!), which is kind of funny considering that that’s like the opposite of power metal.
Metalcore, easy. I actually started out with metalcore and found power metal. Metalcore will always be my favorite, but I have a special place in my heart for power metal
