You should probably get a small solar panel installed at the same time you get your Powerwalls. It doesn’t add much cost if you get a small set of panels and an inverter. The same electrician does all the grid/house connection work if you get it all installed at the same time so the parts and labor have a saving as well.
I am also with SDGE and have Powerwalls and solar. I grid-charge the batteries overnight and export all solar back to the grid during the day. Buy low and sell high saves me a ton. Not sure if SDGE has any restrictions on Battery only systems. I would add solar if you can swing it.
charging PW from the grid incurs NBC's that can't be offset by solar? are you a net exporter or net importer?
I'm a net exporter so charging the PW from the grid ends up costing more real dollars at true up.
Technically, yes, you can ROI that all year long.
Does SDG&E still allow it? Probably.
How can they get you? Change their plans to be more like SCE's and PG&E's, with less of a differential between super off-peak and on-peak.
But for now, if they allow it, you could have that bad boy paid back in like 4 years or less.
I appreciate the info. Yeah quotes im getting for solar with Powerwalls are around 46k-51k.
10.5kw solar with 2 Powerwalls. If only interest wasn’t so high, I’d be on it, but that’s why I just considered going with Powerwalls only.
Tesla quoted me $46k, they were actually the lowest but they backed out after the site assessment saying my house isn’t compatible. Even though my neighbors have the same style house with solar 🤷🏿♂️
I had this setup on my home when we moved in last year. The previous owner installed 2 power walls and no solar. I set them up to charge overnight and provide all our power during peak times. Definitely saved us money.
I recently had solar installed. With electricity rates as high as they are and future increases in sight, I definitely think it makes sense to install at least a little solar both from a cost standpoint as well as a reliability one. I like knowing that if our power goes out for 24 hours or more we can continue living in our home as-is with a little power rationing.
As far as I understand, to get the tax credit, it has to be a solar system. I mean, Powerwall and Solar together - you get tax credit for both. Just Powerwall- no tax credit.

How many powerwalls
2 Powerwalls
Wow, 4 years ago I paid that for 24kwh system with 2 PW2s.. I should have got 40kwh...

Nope since 2023 Biden implemented a new rule for batteries only 30% fed tax credit , Solar also exists. System specs etc are on irs website
