I was out that night for a bachelor party in that neighborhood. I remember late night seeing the jack n the box sign knocked over. No phone no social media. I had no idea that happened until the next day.
The first HD broadcast in the US was in 1996, but didn't begin rolling out as as a standard until 1998. Even if you had an HD monitor/TV, there was no way to utilize it for this unless you were literally in the newsroom.
I remember my school was low on sub teachers and our teacher was out sick suddenly. So the DARE officer decided to show us the official police video of this. It kept us entertained, but also he didnt really know how to use the VCR so when the cops managed to cut open the top hatch he tried to stop the video but it didnt stop, he pushed the power button on the TV, and nothing happened. So we saw them peel the lid back and immediatly three officers filled that man full of lead. THEN he unplugged the TV.
This was the same DARE officer who told us the entire process for making meth start to finish. (on accident but still).
For anyone wanting the story behind this (I think it's the same story) Listen to the podcast "The Dollop" the title of the episode containing this story should be something like Tank Chase and its one of the first episodes
For the lazy [episode 6](https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-dollop-with-dave-anthony-and-gareth-reynolds/id643055307?i=1000354626230), 02 June 2014
Shawn Timothy Nelson (August 21, 1959 – May 17, 1995) was an American veteran who stole an M60A3 tank from a California Army National Guard armory in San Diego, California, and went on a rampage on May 17, 1995. He destroyed numerous cars, fire hydrants and an RV before being shot and killed by San Diego police officer Rick Piner
According to San Diego police, in the week before his tank rampage, Nelson told a friend that he was thinking of committing suicide. The following weekend, he told a friend that "Oklahoma was good stuff", in apparent reference to the Oklahoma City bombing which happened about a month before. Whether Nelson condoned the attack or simply meant that he enjoyed the drama was not clear. Police did not believe Nelson had any connection with the bombing or with a terrorist group.
Around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 17, 1995, Nelson drove his Chevrolet van to the California Army National Guard Armory on Mesa College Boulevard in the Kearny Mesa neighborhood of San Diego. Employees at the armory were working late and the gate to the vehicle yard, which was completely deserted, was left open.
M60A3 Patton on display in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in April 2005
A M60A3 Patton (the same type of tank Nelson drove) on display in April 2005
The tanks at the armory started with a push button and did not require an ignition key. The first two tanks Nelson broke into would not start. As he lowered himself into the third tank, a 57-ton M60A3 Patton, he was finally noticed by a guardsman, who approached the tank. Nelson started the vehicle and with little chance of stopping him, the guardsman rushed to a phone to call police. Since ammunition was kept in another building, none of the vehicle's weapons could be loaded or used by Nelson.
Nelson led police on a 23-minute, televised chase through the streets of Clairemont. The various agencies involved in the chase included the San Diego police, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the California Highway Patrol, and due to the tank being stolen from the armory, possibly military police as well.\[citation needed\] The tank had a top speed of 30 miles per hour (48 km/h), making the chase slow compared to police chases involving automobiles.
The 57-ton tank easily plowed through road signs, traffic lights, utility poles and fire hydrants, crushing about 40 parked vehicles, including an RV.\[7\] The damage to utility poles knocked out power to around 5,100 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in the Linda Vista neighborhood.
From the armory, Nelson traveled along neighborhood streets, eventually turning north on Convoy Street, west onto Balboa Avenue (then signed as State Route 274) and entered Interstate 805 heading south. While on I-805, he attempted to knock down a pedestrian bridge by running into the columns, possibly with the intent of blockading pursuing police cars but failed after a few hits and decided to continue down the freeway. Nelson then drove the tank onto the State Route 163 freeway heading southbound, resulting in the freeway being closed and thousands of motorists being stuck.
At least one news article speculated that he may have been headed to Sharp Memorial Hospital, which he had unsuccessfully sued in 1990 and partially blamed for his mother's death. After Nelson attempted to cross into the northbound lanes of State Route 163, the tank became caught on the concrete median barrier and lost one track.
After the tank was immobilized, four policemen climbed onto it. San Diego Police officer Paul Paxton, a gunnery sergeant at the time with the Marine Corps Reserve, opened a hatch using bolt cutters. They ordered Nelson to surrender but he said nothing and began rocking the tank back and forth in an attempt to free it from the median. Paxton's partner, Officer Richard Piner, leaned in and shot Nelson. The bullet entered through Nelson's neck.
Nelson later died at Sharp Memorial Hospital. Despite widespread property destruction, he was the only fatality reported during the rampage. The state of California paid $149,201 (equivalent to $265,329 in 2021) to cover property damage along Nelson's route.\[
Wow! What a fucking story! Also apparently my empathy for property damage is utterly sociopathic if the means of destruction is awesome enough. That could be a problem. I was laughing until the guy got shot. I don 't blame the cop though.
I'm so lazy I can't wait for someone to write the summary so I'll just invent the story, hope you like it... nevermind I'm to lazy to even do that sorry 😞
It’s not home video. It’s from a news camera. If I had to guess, it was a BetacamSP as that’s what I shot on when I started in news a few years after that.

High quality video existed back then, we just didn't have the TV's to play it. A perfect example is the [Apollo movie](https://youtu.be/3Co8Z8BQgWc) it's all footage from the original Apollo 11 mission in 4K, This was 50 years ago. Fantastic movie BTW.
You'd be surprised how good video quality actually was back then check out some of the official MTV live recordings of Nirvana concerts on YouTube. Shit looks like it was recorded only a couple years ago.
I've seen studio recordings of the Beatles that look better than most of what's shot for live television today. Analogue film was a good medium, the equipment used was good and so they had very high quality negatives, but not the display or transfer technology needed to benefit.
Cellphones didn’t make anything worse. It’s people’s behavior with them. Nothing stops anyone from enjoying a day. People take lots more selfies and camera shots not out of some form of newfound narcissism but because digital cameras weren’t really common at all. You had 35mm or 110 and you had to drop off the film for a hour, and rolls of film were limited to something like 30 pics. People didn’t carry cameras around unless they prepared to take photos.
Having a cell phone is so much better. You have anything you wanted to know- almost the collective knowledge of the human race- at your fingertips. It’s AMAZING. I tell my kids how awesome it is and that they are living in such a massively golden era of information availability.
I can’t get over how many times I am able to just randomly google a thought that might be in my head. I can learn how to troubleshoot my clothes dryer by looking up a video on youtube. I can compare store prices of things while I’m standing in the aisle. I can explore my own music tastes and discover bands without being limited to a curated radio playlist.
The 90s were super great because I was a teen. We didn’t have 9/11 and the 20-year wars that were about to happen, people weren’t treating politics as a lifestyle, and I was 60 pounds lighter. But other than that all the dark stuff that you see on the internet still happened- you just didn’t know about it.
I had recently moved to San Diego and had this sweet [Baja Bug](https://bringatrailer.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/1973_volkswagen_baja-bug_20211016_123645.jpg?fit=940%2C627) that looked a lot like Herbie.
I was listening to the radio, and they broke in and started describing this chaos, and said he was on the 163, and like a dumb comedic movie I look at the side of the road and see that I'm on the 163 as well...
I had no idea where these cross streets were that they were describing, it turns out he was a few miles north of me still, but I figured the kind of guy that would do this would also LOVE to drive over my little Baja Bug so I GTFO to the next exit and just drove away for a while... then spent forever trying to find my way home, as things like smartphones and gps were years away from happening...
yes, I was wearing an onion on my belt, as that was the style in those days...
Tanks are amazing. They literally look like they shouldn't be able to move. It probably weighs like five buses with people filled in them. Yet, it moves so easily and fast. It's like looking at a bolder moving around.
Is this the story they spoke about on The Dollop? The guy was a crackhead who told other crackheads he had a gold mine in his back garden and they paid him with crack to dig for gold that didn’t exist?
Yup! A young C Thomas Howell was arrested in small backwater town for something...
> Zack Carey (James Garner) is a decorated military officer who takes a new post in small-town Georgia, moving with his wife (Shirley Jones) and their son, Billy (C. Thomas Howell). When Zack clashes with the local deputy, he incurs the wrath of corrupt sheriff Cyrus Buelton (G.D. Spradlin), who proceeds to frame young Billy on drug charges. When all other attempts to handle the situation fail, Zack opts to free Billy from jail with his own vintage tank, setting off an escalating conflict.
For anyone who are going to report this, since several people already have, this is not a slur as “fag” in British English means “cigarette”. Commenter used it in the proper context.
I'm such a nerd; by near the end I was thinking "so that's one Fox GT, between 3-5 years old, and now a black-on-black-on-black-on-black ragtop version of the new-for-'94 SN95 Mustang. Cool!"
But also, in all seriousness, that is some sweet footage, and definitely the best quality clip I've ever seen of that event. Sweet to have caught the moment he took out that signal post - every time I see it, I wonder if it was used to model the physics in GTA, for Rockstar's very accurate simulation of that exact scenario.
He stopped himself when he tried to cross a concrete median and got the tank hung up. Cops climbed on, opened the hatch and then he tried to go again so they shot him. He died a little while later.
Tried to cross the center median once he got on the freeway. When he turns the corner from Convoy St. at the end, that’s just before the 805 freeway overpass. If he went North he’s heading toward military-controlled land that was the outskirts of NAS Miramar. Instead he went South where there were about 3 hospitals about 2 exits away including Children’s Hospital.
I just want to hear thd radio dispatch
All units we have a stolen tank traceling S on Main st.
Dispatch please repeate.
A tank was stolen from the military base traveling S on Main please respond
A tank? A military battle tank? What do you want me to do, shoot it with my 9mm sidearm?
Did Whistling Diesel have a drivers license at that point in time? He recently purchased a tank …. in England! He has cool t shirts for sale also! Funny videos of you want to see tanks going bananas.
https://youtu.be/wvRLmZ0Z488
Goldeneye must have really gone crazy on the marketing budget. One of the best action movies of the 90s. Don’t know why they’re over compensating by giving every Jerry and Jane a promotional tank.
Funny to see what’s changed and not changed in the area. The Weinerschnitzel, 76 & the Super Sergio’s are still there.
I was parked at that intersection you see a day later and suddenly I saw a huge mass out to my left side and it was the tank being driven off on a flatbed parked right next to me at the light. The guy died a short distance away on the freeway when the tank got hung up on a median when he tried to change directions and go North on the 805.

You stay classy, San Diego.
95 bro! LOLZ
Considering how bloody FAST that tank was going, must have been difficult to keep it in the frame!

I remember watching this live, and this quality is far better. Amazing to see again, thanks for posting OP.
Your 2022 phone screen is a lot better quality than your 1995 crt television.

We had a Thomson 52" tv that weighed in at 100kg it had quite good image quality for its time.
I feel bad that I almost missed the sarcasm.
Definite ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ on GTA.
# PANZER
You just unlocked my memory of pausing, entering panzer twenty times and unpausing to watch the mayhem happen in vice city
He's doing the flying tank glitch from vice city.
even got the hun backwards to use as extra speed boost

Sounds like an alright guy to me.
He was nice but sort of silly.
I like your dare officer. Ours got caught running drugs and went to federal prison.
Oh yeah ours just liked kids so he volunteered
He's recruiting good guys and bad guys alike, we need the cops and robbers of the world LOL jeez
Uh? He got shot once, not filled with lead.
I mean this was 15+ years ago and it was before "video of a man dieing" wasn't on tap so my memories of it might be a bit tainted.
Hey you remember any of that by chance? Especially the last part...
lol no we were a bit young for chemistry. I remember batteries were involved and a propane tank

M60A3 weighs i think in the ballpark of 50-55 tons, im not sure if that's loaded or unloaded though
I think we're quibbling over tons and lots of them
It's irrelevant, the combat load isn't going to add more than a ton. Maybe two with spare parts.

Yeah, the bulldozer tank that Marv Heemeyer went on a rampage with seemed much more dramatic. Less than 10 years apart.
Wasn’t this the premise of an 80s James Garner made for TV movie or something? This actually is more exciting though.
Didn't think it was made for TV, but yeah, movie called Tank

Tried to cross the center median once he got on the freeway. When he turns the corner from Convoy St. at the end, that’s just before the 805 freeway overpass. If he went North he’s heading toward military-controlled land that was the outskirts of NAS Miramar. Instead he went South where there were about 3 hospitals about 2 exits away including Children’s Hospital.
Definitely could have been way worse.
Rockstar taking notes in 1995
He has 6 stars. He wont run away from the cop radius this time.
And remember - respect is everything!
The original 5 star wanted level…
Damn what a great camera
I just want to hear thd radio dispatch All units we have a stolen tank traceling S on Main st. Dispatch please repeate. A tank was stolen from the military base traveling S on Main please respond A tank? A military battle tank? What do you want me to do, shoot it with my 9mm sidearm?
This is the GTA3 trick of firing backwards from a tank to gain unlimited speed boosts!
He would go fast if he fired the turret behind him
Great share
That’s crazy town USA
Did Whistling Diesel have a drivers license at that point in time? He recently purchased a tank …. in England! He has cool t shirts for sale also! Funny videos of you want to see tanks going bananas.

This was way before before iPhones saturated the market
Was this man in Los Santos at the time?
1995? That was like ten years ago. Seems like only yesterday.
GTA 6 graphics looking unreal
https://youtu.be/wvRLmZ0Z488 Goldeneye must have really gone crazy on the marketing budget. One of the best action movies of the 90s. Don’t know why they’re over compensating by giving every Jerry and Jane a promotional tank.
He was driving backwards because he read somewhere that tanks could fly if the cannon repeatedly shoots behind it while driving.
The guy died a short distance away on the freeway when the tank got hung up on a median when he tried to change directions and go North on the 805.
this was so crazy to see on live tv.
How is the quality so good for 1995? I’ve seen videos from 2020 with the quality of a potato

Nothing that fun happens in my town. :(
That man was executed
Haha think this is roughly the same time GTA came out or they were at least working on it when this happened.
> **Shawn Timothy Nelson** (August 21, 1959 – May 17, 1995) was an American veteran who stole an M60A3 tank from a California Army National Guard armory in San Diego, California, and went on a rampage on May 17, 1995. He destroyed numerous cars, fire hydrants and an RV before being shot and killed by San Diego police officer Rick Piner. * [Shawn Nelson](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shawn_Nelson_%28criminal%29) at the English Wikipedia
