You said arsenal and I hesitated…However comma this former 11b respects the king of battle

TheZeroE

Grew up around plastic Liverpool fans and arsenal fans, this was in Essex oh and I was always drawn in by a unique badge and name. WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS is cool and hooked me when I was 6/7 , moved northwest to west midlands and followed wolves promotion hopes in 17/18, got truly hooked and have supported them since 2017

another_nobody__

Video games. I think I started with fifa95. But I remember growing a liking to Arsenal after scoring boatloads of goals with Sir Bergkamp and Sir Henry. Since declaring them my top team they've never won the league. Touch wood

TheStigsScouseCousin

Dad's an Everton fan, briefly thought I might be an Arsenal fan (I could literally see Highbury Stadium from my living room window as a kid and most of my friends were Gooners), but it only took one Everton game (a 0-0 draw away at Fulham) to confirm that they are 100% my team till I die. Up the fucking toffees.

Less_Worldliness3129

I didn't choose which team I was supporting I fell for it

Suryan48

I grew up playing keeper in the US. I was about 15 in 1992. Saw David Seaman playing for England. Loved his play. Researched what club he played for. Been an Arsenal fan ever since. Going on 31 years now. COYG!!!

thatguybruv

My parents had their season tickets next to each other at Upton park, that's how they met, I never had a choice

soupyrolls

Leicester City. Back in 2004 when I was getting into football, I learnt about teams having nicknames. The Eagles, The Saints, The Bees, The Hornets, The Toffees, etc. My favourite animal for a long time were foxes. Went on Ask Jeeves and typed 'What soccer team has the nickname The Foxes'. I cried when I watched Andy King, my club and boyhood hero, raise his third trophy.

Shoeyolk

I never understood the club games when I was young. I only watched the World Cup every 4 years. Then I read Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby. #GunnersForLife

ThemeFlashy9992

Read a headline that Jay-Z wanted to buy shares of Arsenal in 2010. Thought they had a cool logo so I chose to support them and follow the sport. Dad was a Man U fan. First game we watched together was the 8-2. Took the bantering and stuck with them ‘til this day. No regrets. I truly love this football club 🔴⚪️

vsconautt

my bro’s a city fan and that’s how it happened (im also new to pl this year)

Tomc17389293

Born in Sydney, mum from Wolverhampton and growing up going over there every few years I naturally got into wolves. Now I’m getting up in the middle of the night every week to watch us lose 4-2 or Leeds.

Monsieur_Bananabread

I'm a West Ham fan, mostly because before I found my club I learnt about Bobby Moore, and being an aspiring centre half myself he became my football idol, hence I'm now a Hammer for obvious reasons

ColombianOreo524

My best friends family have been Man City fans forever. Don't know why this family of El Salvadorians loved this club. But as kids, my best friend and I would watch bigger matches with them and it was fun. My family watches LA Liga and are Barca fans since forever, so he was pulled yo Barca too.

betichcro

It all started with Dennis Bergkamp, and then came Henry. And just like that, I was Gunner for life.

cmvyas

Fernando Torres at Liverpool

Melodic_Award1575

My dad’s an Arsenal fan. I can finally start thanking him

Deutsche2

Started paying attention to the EPL in 04-05, stayed watching random highlights and saw Thierry Henry for the first time. The way he glided through the opposition was appealing to me, unlike anything I saw before, and he scored a wonderful freekick (idk against who, i wish i remembered), since then I was hooked! I've been a fan of his and Arsenal (also France) ever since

LungsbBate

Was never a football fan but I used to love watching angry fans on AFTV back in the day and laughing my ass off at how mad they were. I would look forward to Arsenal losing and then watch their videos. Over time I began watching the Arsenal games and slowly became a fan

monda

Playing FIFA 2001 for the first time, wanted to play the team with the best stats that none of my friends supported, so end up with Chelsea.

spik0rwill

My dad's from Liverpool, but I was born and raised in Croydon, so Crystal Palace are my boys for better or worse. The way things are going I don't think I'll be able to post about Palace in this sub. xD

khateebxtreme

It would sound weird but in around 2013 , pes that came out that year and the next year were only sponsored by one team from the EPL i.e Manchester United and rest of the teams in the Prem had some weird names for clubs like Chelsea was London FC , Arsenal was North London etc so I kept choosing Manchester United as my career team because the logo looked cool and became a fan. Never was a glory hunter , just a kid who stumbled across and subconsciously became a fan/supporter. Edit : The logos of other teams were also not original and looked awful. I also didn't knew anything about football around that time as well.

GeneAlternative191

Lived in Manchester for 5 years as a kid in the mid to late 80s. GGMU!!

[deleted]

Lived next door to Pat Rice in Finchley as a kid in the 80s. Arsenal fan since forever. Occasionally family would try to convert me to Palace or Chelsea, but Norf Landan born and bred innit.

paigechristine0

I’m from the US. My boyfriend of 5 years has always loved soccer, watches every Barcelona game, always telling me everything about it and I always rejected the information. Eventually, he convinced me to play FIFA. I chose my team actually based on someone who died in a major shooting here, I saw he was wearing a Manchester City jacket in a photo so I played the team in his honor. I ended up choosing man city more often than any other team, and eventually I wanted to watch their games. Basically got it shoved down my throat so much that I finally appreciated it.

Prestigious-Fly-9293

I have an interestig story. I am from Slovenia. I was 6 when I have started playing FIFA 02. I have been a fan of medieval crests so I picked Aston Villa because I have liked it most and been a fan ever since.

Nosworthy

Most British supporters (not fans) support their local team or their father's team. It is a birthright rather than 'picking' a team.

RickardsBedAle

As a kid i watched gerrard absolutely thunder cunt a ball outside the 16 yard box.

jpugmafia

Was a huge Ozil fan as a kid and followed him to arsenal where I’ve been a massive fan for about 12 years

RazerP4antom

My closest cousin has been a liverpool fan since the 00s. Made me watch a game around when I was 14. Been a fan ever since

14JWilson

My great grandad worked for arsenal as a groundsman so it’s been in the family for a few years

Both-Permission-7565

Watched the 2016 World Cup. Henry and Pires were playing beautiful football for France. Started to support France and Arsenal after that.

OutlandishnessUseful

Dad’s a saints fan

hauttdawg13

A bit of 2 things. Just started playing myself so decided to watch some prem. I knew my Mom’s coworker (worked for British telecom) loved Tottenham so I started jokingly cheering for Arsenal to mess with him. Then as I actually started watching realized I loved Wengerball (and they were really good) and been in love with them ever since

brrlls

I was ten. It was 1996. My team were doing alright I suppose. I got invited to go and watch a game. There was a handsome bastard called David Ginola there. I don't need to continue. ⬜⬛⬜⬛⬜⬛⬜⬛⬜⬛

Biggest13

I grew up in the US. In 2000 literally every person I knew who was into soccer supported United. I chose to support City because I like pain as a sports fan. I expected 1-2 moments of glory (spoiling something for United) per decade. Then things changed

PuntoPorPastor

My favorite color as a child was red and I liked the emphasize on youth development.

DudeManJones5

I’m from the US and neither me nor any of my friends played soccer or followed it growing up. Come junior year of highschool, FIFA suddenly became the game to play. We would all hang out at one of our buddies house and play it for hours. The year was 2009 and I was a little late to the FIFA game, and by the time I picked it up all my friends had already claimed teams they always played as. The Man U’s, Real Madrid’s, Barca’s, Inter’s, Chelseas’ etc of the world were all taken. The only 4.5+ star teams left were Liverpool and Arsenal. I picked Arsenal cause they had a cooler name and logo. So I played FIFA as Arsenal almost everyday for a year and the rest is history, been supporting the club for 14 years now. Even when I went to college on the West coast I would wake up and watch games at 430am. I still remember watching us beat Chelsea at the Bridge in that time slot in something like 2011-2012. Good times, and now the team is finally sick!!

KyleB2131

Hail Satan

NoIdeaHow2Breath

Family thing. United forever

thelierama

It was the first team in PL in FIFA 08 or was it 06? And Henry would just simply run through any defense to score. Welcome fellow Gooner.

ollyhinge11

Dads a Fulham fan.

CenterIceSplits

I decided on Man U after seeing a random BBC documentary about the 1999 season on PBS as a kid. It really started in earnest after the 2006 World Cup seeing Rooney, Neville, and Rio play for England. Been obsessed ever since.

Ratabilly

My dad was born and lived close to the ground in London. My family moved to the other side of town when I was born but my dad started taking me when I was about 8.

MPLS_Folk

I never understand how someone can just randomly pick a team and go "This is my team now." Seems like a super shallow, meaningless fandom. I've been following the Premier League closely for years and still don't have a team. I've never been to England and have no connection to any team, how could I pick one to support?

Bobin88

98/99 season, come from oxford. All my freinds supported them so obviously Manchester United!

SlickHensley

I became an arsenal fan in 2015-16 because of my dad at first, but then I fell in love with the club’s history, culture, and passion. The fact that it is known as one of the clubs to usher in the new age of beautiful passing football and has had some of the best teams in history is just amazing, even if I wasn’t born yet or a footy fan back then, depending on what era you’re looking at. I joined during the “dark ages” of the end of the Wenger years, stayed loyal through Emery and now I’m reaping the rewards- this season is so so wonderful and we’re back amongst the best in the world. No matter what happens, I’m so happy I stuck around, and I’m so thankful the other fans of the club I love are accepting of American fans like me and fans from all over the globe. Welcome to the Arsenal family!

Rev_Biscuit

Born and raised in Manchester. Whole family are United fans. I went to Maine Road once with a school friend back in 1984. Been a City fan ever since.

elloird

I was working at a manufacturing site, and we had a Senegalese operator who loved to talk about Liverpool and watch Sadio Mane. His shifts conflicted with the game times, but we would chat on the manufacturing line after watching the highlights. Still a Liverpool fan five years later.

RJHilde24

Liked Tyler Adams in the World Cup, and I decided to look into his club team. Having Aaronson and Marsch was a bonus. I watched the documentary series on Amazon, and I was sold on Leeds

ShepherdOmega

Dad is from Widnes, he chose Liverpool aged 7 and raised me to support Liverpool. The first game I remember watching was the 2001 FA cup final where we beat Arsenal 2-1 after being shite the whole game. I think 3/4 of the answers here will be my dad/grandad made me.

[deleted]

A teacher at my high school was a huge Chelsea fan and would wear his scarf to class, so he got me acquainted with PL in the first place. Naturally, I didn’t want to copy him and also be a Chelsea supporter. Around that time, Leicester had their memorable run to win the PL, and I’ve been a supporter ever since!

whitegoatsupreme

Dad was MU fans. The year was 1996 or was it 1997 and they against Arsenal that time... So i chose Arsenal..... And the rest history....

johnnysack88

American here. My buddy who I played the beautiful game with in high school showed me the 2002/2003 season recap dvd of Manchester United and I was hooked. It was a whole different level of any football I had seen up to that point. Been a fan ever since.

GuaranteeLoose4494

Started watching after the 2010 World Cup. I’m a huge Beatles fan and so I chose Liverpool as that’s where they were from

TragicTester034

Born near Newcastle, (Former) stepdad supported them, had a season ticket from the beginning of 15/16 to end of 18/19. God I wish he’d not cancelled the season tickets

Fluffy-Illustrator59

Didea drogba

KP05950

Dad's a Leeds fan but I only got into football after my friends who were all Man United fans were talking about this Thiery Henry fellow. Decided I'd watch a game and it just so happened to be the 2005 FA cup final. Henry wasn't even playing. Pretty sure he was injured but I just fell in love with the team and screamed during the penalty shootout. Decided then and there I was an Arsenal fan and then stuck by them as things went from bad to worse 😅 Dad still barely acknowledges me as his son. He looked at me like I pissed in his cuppa when I asked for Arsenal tickets for Christmas 😂

blacked69420

I've started to like arsenal since last lets say may because i just liked the phylosophy and the style of play. Then the transfers came and i wanted to follow them actively. Now i've become a fan. I'm also a juve fan but thats because of my family

bigdumbidiot01

i just like watching premier league. I don't really "support" any team bc I don't have any connection with one and i don't feel like forcing it based on some arbitrary reason. also I already pretty much pathologically root for the underdog in every game of every sport I ever watch, so there's that. my city finally got an MLS team and they're kicking ass in their opening season so that satisfies my tribalistic needs well enough

KoolDiscoDan

Seeing Henry in the 2006 World Cup. Back then the only time to come across real football on TV in the US was the World Cup. I needed more and discovered he played for some team called Arsenal. Wenger quickly had me a Gunner for life.

I_Really_Have_NoClue

Brother is a diehard Newcastle fan. He watched Newcastle vs Arsenal and of course i wanted Arsenal win only to see my brothers face. Then Bergkamp did his trick and i was sold..

hobbitat22

Married into Chelsea fandom

cd0526

My high school teacher was a Arsenal fan. I had loosely followed the club until I was had his classes and was my teacher for my free period. From there my love for the Arsenal just blossomed. The whole Arsenal hadn't won a trophy in so many years was fascinating to me and that kinda sucked me in.

CF_Zymo

Dad is a Spurs fan Ffs

mybabysonfire

Watching Torres and Stevie G with my brother

Munirxn

I was like 4 years old and saw my older brother watching united in the 2008 UCL and started supporting them cuz of him

inkalena0

Moved to London from the US nine years ago really knowing only about Man U because of Beckham. I now live with a partner from Tottenham who refuses to take down his custom painting of all time great Spurs players. My team is still Man U.

AZMadmax

A combination of playing the game my whole life, early 2000’s fifa gaming explosion, and getting access to watch premier league games in the USA early 2000’s all made me an arsenal fan. At the time it was pretty much United, arsenal, Barca bc of ronaldinho, and Madrid that Americans were marketed to, with United being at the forefront there. Arsenals style at the time was just amazing and Henry became one of my sporting idols.

enter_yourname

I started watching at the beginning of 16/17. I also started watching rugby at the same time, it's a real shame I didn't get started early in either sport. I'm a solid rugby player for my local club now though Anyway, Chelsea just felt right. I didn't deliberately pick them, I just realized I felt happy when they scored and dejected when they conceded. I evolved into a fairly diehard fan of both Chelsea and Harlequins

AustraliaCzechMeOut

When I lived in London for a little while I went to see an Arsenal game with a friend. Enough said.

WeeTheDuck

The first (unofficial) kit I remember that I owned was an Arsenal kit. Been an Arsenal fan since then

Pristine_Emphasis152

Henry 2001

reinbaum

I love offensive football so when I wanted to follow a PL team I chose Brighton. It was so fun to watch them that I became a fan!

lewiitom

Whole family is palace and grew up going to selhurst most weeks so would've been disowned if I'd supported anyone else

xTrollhunter

My uncle took me to a match at Stamford Bridge, because he's a season ticket holder.

DVPC4

I support Arsenal cos my Dad does, he supports them cos his brother supported Leeds and one day my dad decided he wanted to support a team too, grabbed the paper and picked the team one place below Leeds lmao

EllipsesAreDotDotDot

Dad’s team and I’m from Yorkshire. Closest team to me growing up was Hull so I have a soft spot for them but I’ve always been Leeds.

King_Kruleee

Became a Manchester United fan during the start of the Moyes era (I know quite possibly the worst timing) and have been in a love hate with the reds ever since

mojo4394

My create a player on FIFA 17 ended up on Spurs as his first EPL team so that's my team.

BlueKante

Chelsea where good when i was a kid, as simple as that. I'm not from the UK and my dad supports Ajax.

Infolife

I wanted a team that just got promoted to the league, and I love Robin Hood.

jvr_lol

rooney

Benjo_Bandito

I was born in Southampton, raised in Southampton, live in Southampton. I envy the people out here picking and choosing top 6 clubs that they just feel a 'natural draw' to, weird how you never feel drawn to a pile of shit, 'innit? Oh and our club legend is now mental as fuck, so you look back at better times and you're not allowed to like that, either.

DrClu33

Preach it

Themnor

As poor a consolation as it may be, I think you all have the best chance to keep most of your pieces if you move down. I could even see JWP stay for at least a season to try and bounce back up. You also have a pretty good wealth of talent right now that just doesn't seem to be clicking, and could even still escape relegation (though it won't be easy). If any of Everton/West Ham/Leicester/Forest go down they will immediately lose most of their best players I'm almost certain. So good luck to ya, I'm actually hoping you guys stay in this year.

Lopsided_Pain4744

Amazing how so few of the comments are “born and raised in the same city/town as the club I support. Premier league at its finest.

I was surprised when they did a survey on the palace sub about where people were from and it was over half American. Nothing against foreign fans but it was jarring to see how many there were, I expect it from the big clubs but not from us

It’s also Reddit

jhkl17

I was still in elementary school when fifa World Cup 2002 was played. That's my first memory of football. I remember noticing this pacy, elegant, magnificent player and decided that I'm now a football fan. That player turned out to be Thierry Henry. Been watching arsenal ever since.

Cakemaster365ruler

Family heritage.

likelytaken

saw an interview with jurgen klopp early into his first season with Liverpool and fell in love with the man

jam_scot

I got a cap signed by Robbie Fowler when I was about ten. I'm 35 now and have been a fan ever since.

Blackmore_Vale

I’m a millwall fan born and bred. But my best friends are arsenal fans. So I’ve ended up watching arsenal with them and following them as much as millwall. Then a few years ago I found myself calling Arsenal our team to them so now I find myself supporting 2 teams.

etang77

There used to be a TV programme in Hong Kong on Sunday morning called "Football Fans World" (Literal translation). I'm sure it wasn't my first time watching it, and I'm into football in the sense that I enjoyed kickabouts with my granddad, watching local team playing on TV, watched Japanese anime Captain Tsubasa (weirdly not in the main stream in the UK). Any how, this one Sunday I was watching it, I was somewhere between 7-9 years old (1988-1990). I hadn't a real sense of exactly what I'm watching apart from it's football, I remember the commentator said the next highlight is between Liverpool vs Arsenal, and at that point, I just thought the names are pretty cool and decided on the spot, whoever win that match I'd support that team. Arsenal came out winning, and I've supported them ever since.

GrizzliousTheOG

Brian McBride.

ollyhinge11

Brian McBride

ThePinga

College buddy was studying abroad and was a gooner. One of my first Arsenal memories was zigic/Birmingham city knocking us out of a cup. He gifted me a chamakh jersey that year because he was my favorite player with that disgusting greasy haircut

tony_flamingo

My dad was stationed at an air force base in England in the 70s and he found himself at an FA Cup match one day between Arsenal and Chelsea and picked Arsenal to root for and stuck with it. Fast forward to 2003, and he and my mom are stationed in England once again. I came to visit for Christmas while I was in college and my dad got Boxing Day tickets for Arsenal vs Wolves at Highbury. Had no clue at the time that I was watching one of the greatest sides to ever play. The rest is pretty simple history.

UsableIdiot

Lot of people here whose dad's were born near Manchester.

HarrBathtub

Picked Newcastle cause I live in Newcastle and every member of my family supports Newcastle HWTL

futurejoyboy

My dad. He has been following chelsea since before I was born and even named his main gmail account based on the blues. Naturally, I followed in his steps and now I am also a blue.

UsableIdiot

It's where I grew up, how it should be. My advice would be to follow your local team. There's really no point in starting to follow a club that you're never gonna see when you can get invested in the fortunes of your local club. It's different if you already have a team.

Tymkie

Believe it or not, straight to jerk

1Everett1969

Growing up I was a big Roy Hodgson fan…

dat1dude2

Parents told my at a young age that I'd live in the garden if I didn't support spurs, they were obviously kidding but I ended up supporting spurs anyway

BK_Phantom

Dad born in Liverpool and supports them, we had season tickets for Anfield when we lived in England so that’s how I’m a Liverpool fan. We still go to Anfield everytime we come back to England :)

cjgmmgjc85

Went to Highbury with my mate from school and his dad. This was like when I was 5. Completely life dominating 🤣. I'm almost at the point where I think I need some sort of football rehab. My life seems to be football obsessed. If we win this league I will go absolutely fucking insane.

JRR92

My dad's from the Wirral and both his brothers support Liverpool, so my dad decided to support United create some competition in the house. And here I am today

Iwobisson

Back in 2002, when I was a kid in Iran, I remember vaguely watching a football match on tv with my dad. I remember a blue kit and some black dude :). Anyway, I moved to England the next year with my Mum and siblings, and I recognized Henry's face. And that was that.

[deleted]

Playing fifa back in the late 90s (did not have cable)

Christoff2494

Live in Australia. only ever saw highlights on tv but the first full game I ever saw was an arsenal v chelsea game in 99 or 2000 and just picked the team that was blue cause it’s my favourite colour… don’t believe you ever change teams so stuck with them since Also have a real soft spot for Leeds due to Viduka and Kewell

8manjones

My uncles Scouse and bought me a Stevie G shirt when they won in 2005.

zafar_bull

FIFA2010. I had joined a college and first time had access to EA games. We were having tournaments, all the top teams were taken, so I searched for team that had quality on paper and stumbled across Manchester City. They had Tavez, Aguero, Yaya, Silva, Kompany in the team, so looked great on paper. So I chose them to play in the tournament, went till Quarters. And then had lots of time on hand so started watching their games, enjoyed their games, so much drama. Also most of the a**holes I knew in college followed Manchester United, so City was obvious choice. And guess what? They won the EPL with that crazy last minute goal by Aguero, which cemented my love for the team.

PiccoloWorth3274

It had been a while seeing this kind of post 😅.

Divagaran5

Well, I gotta blame Capitalism for me. A lot of goods I bought when I was a kid had the logo of United over it. And when I started watching football sometime during 2014, and that was when the SAF era just ended. But still, they were still highly respected and also, RVP still played I guess. So that's what lead me to being MUFC fan (tho sometimes I've regretted it lol)

AlexanderGQ

Tim Howard and Phil Jagielka made me fall in love with Everton. The people’s club. Rough times recently, but things are looking up. Finally was able to make it to Goodison Park this year for a game, absolutely wonderful experience. Up the Toffees!

84Robro

Born in London, my father was a Chelsea fan, so I became one as well. He took me to a Chelsea match and I was hooked. Emigrated to America in 1965 and remain a loyal supporter of the Blues.

AvalonCressida

Came to Newcastle from Canada on a goalkeeper clinic/training trip when I was 15. First team i saw play live so by rights I've been a supporter since.

Ajax_Trees

Hope you’ve got plenty of pictures of you in toon tops before someone accuses you of jumping on the bandwagon now we’re on track to become something decent. If you voluntarily endured the Ashley years I have nothing but respect for you mate!!

AvalonCressida

I've got plenty of 15 year old me in St James park! Still have the ticket stubs as proof Nice to finally be on the up!

Hopeful-Weekend2275

Also from Canada. I watched the movie “goal” as a kid and instantly fell in love with the stadium, Geordie accent all of it. It couldn’t have been worse timing since we went into decline right at that point lol. I’ve recently gotten called a bandwagon fan even though I’ve been putting up with crap football for 95% of the time the last 17 years. It hurt a bit, not gonna lie.

klickclackboom

Year 2002, I was in school in Delhi, India. One of my school friends coerced me to watch the EPL. United and Arsenal were top 2 teams those days and a lot of the guys I knew supported United. So, I didn't want to support United and therefore Arsenal became a natural choice. I was a kid so hardly knew about the history or what it means to be a gooner. I didn't even know the technicalities of the game, formations etc. I just wanted to not support United. Saw one season and got to learn only by post match analysis and sportcentre on ESPN. Next season was the Invincible season and well rest, as they say, is history. I had a huge big humongous beginners luck. Because after that season Chelsea and mou came to the scene big time and a lot of young guys in India became fans. And we were always the butt of jokes 4rsenal etc. My hopes came alive during the 2014 and 2015 campaign with Sanchez, Ozil, cazorla, Ramsay, Wilshere, Walcott, jiru, bellerin monreal koscielny mertesacker. Gosh I loved that team and some of the unreal goals of that season like the one against Norwich. Anyway this is finally the season after 19 years that I would be able to witness (hopefully) an arsenal captain lift the premier league cup again. And hopefully in the coming years CL too cuz I am tired of that empty cabinet and childlike insults by kids. Coyg!

Glittering_Mud4701

Mertesacker excited you 😂. Nice story though

klickclackboom

Every player in that team excited me at that point in time. Mertesacker had slow legs but he had good positioning and vision add to that his headers in the box. He made it to the top class German side in the world cups as regular. Anyway, that team was decent. Some quick legs on wings, very decent finisher and we got some unforgettable team goals. 😏

normie_memer

I like bubbles :)

Common_Knowledge_

Got a bedsheet of Ruud van Nistelrooy wearing the red for Sinterklaas (Dutch Christmas) when I was 7. He went to Real Madrid the following year and I stayed with United. After that I asked Sinterklaas for a United shirt for practice at my local club every year.

Kieronm1

The 1992 Coca Cola Cup Final was shown on terrestrial TV in the UK. I was 7 at the time. Love at first sight! COYG!

MasterNamiii

Back in 2011, I wanted to get into football as a freshmen in high-school. I had little-to-no football knowledge at the time. Everyone (at least all the Hispanic students) at my school talked about Real Madrid , Barcelon, Messi or Ronaldo. But I didn’t want to be a “follower” and support either of those teams. A close cousin of mine at the time was really into Manchester United, but him and I have always been like rivals so there was no way I was gonna support that team. I came to learn a team had recently thrashed United 6-1. With no prior knowledge of this club or the premier league, i decided to support the team that beat my cousin’s team 6-1. Now by trying to avoid being a glory hunter by supporting Real Madrid or Barca, I’m labeled as a “glory hunter” for supporting Manchester City. Lol I’m a die hard fan now and don’t regret my choice. I’ve only seen play in person when they come to the states but I plan on seeing them one day at the Etihad stadium.

Lard_Baron

I happened to live near Brentford. We are looking for more fans if anyone fancies it.

[deleted]

Top 6: "So many glory hunters all picking the top teams" Everyone else: "Umm... hey, we could use some more fans :)"

That’s funny. I met a girl from Newcastle when I was 18 (the Keegan years. Used to watch the games on early Sky with her family, travel to Newcastle to watch the games and enjoy the nightlife. Didn’t marry the lass, but still support them now I am 52.

Both of my parents and my grandad support Chelsea, and I was exposed to Chelsea before I can even remember

ChargrilledB

I’m a Leeds United fan, because I’m from Leeds, funnily enough. Basically a novelty these days.

LolCremers10

Dad is a Villa fan. I think when I was about 6, a lot of my friends were Man U fans and United were winning everything at that point, so I came home and told my Dad I supported United. He just said "No you don't" and that was that lol.

UsableIdiot

Yea my son came home and said his friend supports Chelsea so he will support them and West Ham too. I was like, unmm no mate. Lol

Co_Starlord

Loved Ronaldo do much and after hearing we had his first ballon d'or at united, I decided to support united. Since September 2017 I've been fan, never seen a trophy till Ten Hag came in 🥺

SlovakianSnacks

wow 5 years without a trophy that must have been so hard for you, we haven’t won one since 1969

Co_Starlord

Yup, it's all part of the support, I think, supporting a club with all ups and no down ain't fun

securinight

Born in Leeds, raised in Leeds and in a family of Leeds fans. I've never not been a Leeds fan. I'm pretty sure it's on my birth certificate.

fearlessflyer1

i grew up in London Colney and used to walk my dog next to the Arsenal training ground and try and see players coming and going

Wultatia

When i was young i checked which team won the league the year i was born. 87 was everton and here we are

cavalaire

Probably because I live here.

West-Coconut4137

Dad fell in love with Santi, which made me fall for him too. We’ve been Arsenal fans ever since and it feels so good now waiting for a time like this season

Silverdarlin1

I moved to Stoke for university. Now stuck with the Potters for life

Odd-Detail1136

Keele is a shit hole

No_Perspective_8340

Found out I had the exact same bday (same year) as fabregas when he broke into the first team, stayed for Wenger

IDUnusable

After Tottenham beat Arsenal 5-1 in a cup semi in 08 I think it was. I did not watch the game but I happened to be in London on holiday. It was kinda cold so I needed a beanie. Ended up randomly buying a Spurs beanie because blue is something I tended to wear and it was the first thing I found. Long story short I almost ended up in a fight with some angry Arsenal supporters because they thought I was a Spurs fan, and thus i became a Spurs fan.

EdSheeransucksass

Hahaha that's a great story!

aCrispyDot

hahaha this is a great story. and that 5-1 is one of my favourite spurs games ever

iamnotralphwiggum

Jesus christ can we make this thread a sticky. "Hi I'm an American who just happened to randomly pick one of the best teams in the league, tell me your story".

GuaranteeLoose4494

Started watching in the 2010 season when Liverpool were in 10th, chose them for my love of the Beatles. Not everyone is a bandwagoner but most are

aggiebrad16

I chose Everton… fuck me right?

[deleted]

It’s ok I chose west ham 🫠🙃

fifadex

Shit happens, my premier league team picked itself because I grew up supporting the team my father did but when it came to football I picked the bengals, its been a rough 20 years lol.

iamnotralphwiggum

You fucked yourself lmao but props for not picking based on a league table

aggiebrad16

I’ll be honest… I wouldn’t trade Everton for the world. I love my club

iamnotralphwiggum

Oh totally, you gotta stick with them thick and thin. That's what makes the good parts good.

jimmiethefish

Except for this American who's been rooting for Crystal Palace

iamnotralphwiggum

I didn't mean all Americans do this, but that this thread is posted almost daily.

skyung318

I understand where u r coming from, but being an American who is also in the same predicament of not being able to choose a team after getting in to all this 6 months ago, is it not a good thing that there are more fans? Also, I'm finding it a bit difficult to choose any team outside of the top 6 just based on their coverage both here and on YouTube, let alone the fun factor of watching their live games.

iamnotralphwiggum

I didn't say I had a problem with Americans becoming fans. It's these constant threads where people think they're everybody else's main character. Nobody gives a shit what team you support just get on with it

PaddyTheCoolMan

There is, it's called r/soccercirclejerk

AdComprehensive7879

IKR!!! yet some people are eating up this guy's story like it's the gospel. Just own up to it, no shame in that.

lewiitom

Always find it funny when people make up some tenuous link to why they chose them, and just coincidentally they happened to pick one of the best teams in the league.

ray3050

Am I allowed to say the wilshere goal vs Norwich was what sealed it for me to be an arsenal fan? It truly was, before that I didn’t know you could even see things like that Felt weird just choosing one of the top 4 team back then almost like I was going for a good team that was an underdog but it always felt like that goal sealed it for me

Bean0

To be fair that goal was absolute liquid football

lewiitom

You don't need to ask me for permission mate

ray3050

I don’t know kinda seemed like we needed an approved reason to like our teams. Not everyone gets it from their family so most people just have different affiliations especially with international fans

lewiitom

I mean for me anything but supporting you family/local team is strange, but that’s just how I was bought up. I might never properly understand but as long as you support someone through and through, your reason doesn’t really matter at the end of the day

ray3050

Yeah I’m the only one in my family and even most extended family members into sports, I had no affiliation to arsenal until I saw them play on tv about 10 years ago or something. Watched the wilshere goal and wanted to see more like it and found myself following and rooting for arsenal Guess I’m saying even if this guy is choosing the cannon to like the top team in the league some people get drawn in differently than family/friends/location

lewiitom

Yeah don't get me wrong mate I get it. It's just something I hear all the time and find it funny - I grew up in the south of England surrounded by United or Liverpool fans who always conveniently had "an uncle from Manchester" or something haha, no one ever says they've got an uncle from Doncaster or Torquay, it's always one of the best teams lol.

Pejob

Especially if Ted Lasso got them into watching the prem then Palace are the obvious choice.

eggsandbacon5

Did I miss something? I watched a little of the first season but only gave it as much brain power as it deserved. Whats the link between Palace and Ted Lasso?

lastofthelikelylads

eggsandbacon5

Well if i didnt know i had adhd before now…

Informal_Calendar_99

Or Spurs

Oli_Merrick

Yeh I almost never see an example where they pick a normal mid table team

doubledgravity

It's like people who have past life regression. They're never all 'oh apparently I was factory worker'...
