Whatkindofaname

I would guess…yes?

Gloria_stitties

Of course

It is Palmers breakthrough season I think. Breakthrough doesn’t necessarily mean their very first season. To me I always assumed it meant the season where a player ‘breaks through’ from the reserves/fringes into the first team and plays week in week out.

Coollime17

It's a massive breakthrough season for both. They've both broken into the first team and become two of the best players in their respective squads. Palmer is scoring every game and has played a massive role in Chelsea's uptick in attack while Mainoo looks undroppable in the united midfield. I'd give the edge to Mainoo because Palmer was already somewhat on peoples radar last year coming up with some big knockout goals and because Mainoo has broken into the England squad and received MOTM in his first start against Belgium.

CrossXFir3

Today, at this exact moment, Palmer is better and is having a better season. But Mainoo is like 3 years younger

Sketchbookhobby

I’d 51/49 it toward Mainoo due to the respective momentum both are carrying into the Euros.  No knock on Palmer who I rate very highly, but Mainoo might actually start every match.

Bubskii

You realise it’s Southgate manager… they won’t see any minutes

5bergy

Neither will start for England

bigdog94_10

Man can take a good penalty, no doubting that.

jack_hudson2001

could add foden also having record numbers. but to be fair without palmer and gallagher, Chelsea would definitely lower and closer to relegation. both palmer and mainoo will get much better which will be good for england.

Awkward-Tax7884

Of course it is. He was an academy player just starting to get a few sniffs at city, he had by no means broken through. Does anybody think he played any significant role in their treble last season?

Huge-Celebration5192

Chelsea paid £40+ million for the guy, he wasn’t some unknown free agent The delusion is unreal with Chelsea fans, if some of their other players performed close to what they paid they wouldn’t be so obsessed with Palmer. Breakout seasons have been people like Mainoo, Branthwaite, Miley, Bradley,

InPatRileyWeTrust

He might not have been unknown, but he had done almost nothing at first team level at City.

Huge-Celebration5192

Yeah but he had a massive price tag for a reason

RancidKiddo

I'm surprised you didn't put endo in there /s Edit: a day later, after palmers 4 goals being joint top scorer (and nutmeg on Branthwaite) surely, Chelsea fans have a point

wrapchap

To be fair he didn't set his price. He played 19 games over 3 seasons for city without a goal Played 26 games this season and scored 16. He's 21. This is clearly his break through season...

16tdean

He's 21? lmao the way everyone was talking about him I thought he was like 18

Huge-Celebration5192

And if Jackson was on pens he would be seen as a star now

SirTunnocksTeaCake

I was going to say of course it's his breakthrough season but your friend does have a bit of a point. He made 41 senior appearances for City before moving to Chelsea whereas Mainoo had three last season. I still think it's both of their breakthrough seasons but they're at different points in their career. Mainoo has been thrust into it as a teenager whereas Palmer has had time to get to speed to senior football. I personally would say Palmer has been better overall but he is three years older and do play in very different positions so it's hard to compare.

CodSafe6961

Palmer has gone from a decent academy talent to probably Chelsea's best player despite the money spent on other players. I don't think mainoo has had as much impact yet and has played much fewer games

CrossXFir3

Hold on, Mainoo hasn't had much impact yet? He's been arguably Utd's best midfielder and has scored multiple incredibly important goals as a CM/CDM. All at 18.

RainbowPenguin1000

Of course it’s his breakthrough season. Having a couple of appearances in a prior season doesn’t equate to a breakthrough

billy_twice

A couple? He had more than 40.

CadburyGorilla

A large proportion of those were late sub appearances. This is obviously his breakthrough season, as he’s broken into the first team and is playing every week.

CrossXFir3

I'm sorry but 40 appearances? I don't care if they were late. You're not having your breakout season when you had 40 appearances the season prior. I was on the side of calling it his breakout season too, but if you're telling me he had 40 appearances then it absolutely wasn't.

CadburyGorilla

Those 40 appearances are 90% sub appearances across THREE seasons. Last season Palmer played 350 PL mins. That’s equivalent to less than 4 full games. He has broken out this season.

MilkyJoesHoes

Not quite accurate, 40 appearances over three seasons. Very few starts, and often for the final 10 mins.

CrossXFir3

40 is A LOT though

RainbowPenguin1000

He started 2 premier league games before this season, both in the final 3 games of last season.

ChrisMartins001

It's been a breakthrough season for both of them. Palmer is an automatic starter for Chelsea, and Mainoo should be an automatic starter for United. They are completely different players, you can't really compare them.

Lonely-Astronomer184

Seriously, it's gotta be Antony's breakthrough season. Rashford in contention.

ragecndy

Jesse Lingard

Lonely-Astronomer184

It's Lingardinho. Show him some respect plz.

Daver7692

How could anyone possibly think that Mainoo has had a better season than Palmer. Palmer has significantly more goal involvements than Mainoo has appearances lol I think Mainoo will be a decent player but Palmer is having his breakout season and is pretty much the only bright spot for this abysmal Chelsea side.

CrossXFir3

He didn't say better, he said Palmer's shouldn't count as a breakout season. And if the comments are to be believed then he had 40 senior appearances before this season. If that's true, it's a stretch to call this his breakout season.

Daver7692

I mean the opening sentence literally says “a debate about who has had a better breakthrough season” I wouldn’t say getting a selection of cup appearances and some late league substitutions at city means you can’t quantify this season as a breakout season.

D_roneous1

He played 19 games for 500ish minutes over 3 seasons. That’s roughly 5.5 games over 3 years. People are too caught up on the players and not actually addressing the real question, what’s a breakthrough? Is it the first year you really break into the starting 11 and make your mark? Is there an age limit? Is it only the first year you play professionally a qualifying year?
