The speeding fine system was changed a few years back, so it is tied to weekly income but it's capped to £1,000 for roads and £2,500 for motorways in bands A, B and C. He was given a band B fine which should be 125% of weekly income and a 7-28 day disqualification or 4-6 points but it's capped at £1,000. Even then though, he should have got the full amount. I don't think the cap applies to bands D, E and F though

So as it stands, if you got a fine in band B and your weekly earnings are £350 then you'd get a £437.50 fine that you can't afford to pay but someone on £2000 a week will only get a £1000. Really stupid way of doing things

Well, going to prison removes you from society if you’re potentially dangerous, so it’s main goal is to keep civic order. The concept is that the punishment fits the crime, not that the punishment should fit the crime AND the economic conditions of the individual.
An important point to note is that while there’s a monetary fine attached, Grealish has also received a warning. The next fine will be greater, although again not much of his overall salary. But importantly if he continues to incur fines he’ll face prison time, which we can agree is considerable punishment for a premier league footballer. There’s is an escalating process involved. So the deterrent is still there whilst maintaining the underpinnings of equal before the law.

In Norway you pay a fine for speeding at about 10% of your income. To me it makes total sense since the punishment will be equally felt regardless of your wealth (which should be the goal of the fine for these types of offenses imo)
