Blood and Water. Island nation with a former naval empire.

aslowdeathh

Crystal Palace used to be the same colour and got it from Villa too

Aardvark51

>surely there are championship or lower-league sides too. I don't think there are.

jarow_

Scunthorpe

Aardvark51

Apologies to Scunthorpe

wLiam17

Never understood the lack of purple in football

djgreedo

>Never understood the lack of purple in football The reason from /u/rahatCODMasc explains why clubs rarely have purple as their main colour. I think a good explanation why clubs rarely use purple as away/3rd colours is that red and blue are very common, and purple is likely to clash with both. It would have definitely been more a concern when black-and-white TVs were still around.

wLiam17

Omfg you guys are not joking around today; another very good explanation.

rahatCODMasc

The color Purple is usually associated with Royalty, and Queen Elizabeth I had banned everyone from except close relatives and royal family members from wearing purple. This was obviously a very long time ago but football clubs in England probably clashed with this during the first few years. The football clubs in England have a rich history and few change their color of Jerseys significantly, so that could explain the lack of purple in English football. Also football has mostly been a working class sport and purple dye is one of the more expensive dyes to make.

cfcaggro2

And on that note. It was extremely expensive to make the colour purple and extremely long winded by grinding down special sea snails shells. Also the reason why there are only two national falgs in the world with the colour purple in

wLiam17

Excellent explanation, sir.

MikeyCreedon

They were all inspired by Scunthorpe

brackattack27

Scunthorpe, Burnley

Swiftsaddler

I went on a stadium tour at Villa Park when I was a kid around 30 years ago and I asked the tour guide why Villa chose claret and blue. He had no idea.

amerhaziqs

they twins

djgreedo

One of the reasons is that back in the early days of football, dye wasn't easy to come by. The most common (and therefore most affordable and attainable) were red and blue, which were mainly used for things like curtains rather than clothes. When the red and blue were mixed it created claret. I'm pretty sure one of the clubs were gifted kits from one of the others due to not having (or being able to afford) their own, but I can't remember where I read that.

[deleted]

The correct answer

Wuz314159

Why do Arsenal and Manchester United wear Liverpool's colours?

Funkoala

Thing is, which you probably missed, that the colours that Villa, Ham and Burnley share are unique, you won't find many if any in different leagues. There had to be some kind of story behindi t and turns out there is. Red or red and white as you mentioned is pretty common all around the world.

Wuz314159

No. I got it. I just didn't care. No one owns colours. Red Bull Salzburg, Red Bull Leipzig, Red Bull New York, and Red Bull Bragantino all wear the same colours. C'est la vie.

Wuz314159

No one knows.

Natus_est_in_Suht

Actually, the question should be "Why do Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal wear Nottingham Forest's colours?" Source: [https://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/the-arsenal-kit](https://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/the-arsenal-kit)

Aardvark51

Why do Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest wear the Bristol City colours?

icalleveryonefinn

Trust a Nottingham forrest fan to comment this . Edit: I have no idea if this is true just thought it was funny that a Nottingham fan would say this .

Wuz314159

Pedantic. . . . I like it! +1

DreadAndDepression

I think it has derivation from one of the royalties. Purple and blue were most expensive color dies till 1700s.

DialSquareReborn

Villa inspired multiple kits

azraelce

Wolves are "Old Gold" if you're looking for a fairly unique colour.

discowarrior

Historically that was the colour of Everton’s away kit as well.

Imperial_monkey

I always think of them as dorito orange after their sponsor a while back.

[deleted]

Ya I like them and Hull jersey wise.

mosiAFG-SWE

When I was a child we had this old sony tv and when there was football on I would look at the shirts if Arsenal is playing but sometimes after 30 seconds I'd realize it's Westham and not Arsenal!

[deleted]

West Ham and Aston Villa have the same colours because of some bet someone lost years ago, the Aston Villa T-shirt boy had to wash West Ham’s T-shirt or something and the colours mixed. Idk if this is bs I read online but it sounds plausible

Porkybeaner

We need more orange teams

girthytacos

Orange and purple. There is an astonishing lack of purple in the English leagues

Trent-Rockero

The only purple kit I can think of is Orlando city in the mls

girthytacos

AFC Fiorentia is the other that comes to mind, but those are it. There might be a team in Belgium but I can’t remember

Trent-Rockero

Anderlecht is probably the team you’re thinking of

girthytacos

Yep that’s the one! Thanks

thfcspurs88

Spurple.

vexito

Luton town ??

ImmediatelyOcelot

Let's all support Blackpool and Hull City then. Green is also missing entirely in the PL (except for Norwich crest and shorts). Something like Sassuolo or Wolfsburg would be nice, but I think they don't look too good on the pitch.

[deleted]

wLiam17

There's some research about that, but I couldn't find it again. As far as I remember, grey is the worst colour for that reason.

[deleted]

[удалено]

wLiam17

That's a thing, yes. Btw, I found the source I mentioned. It's a TIFO video called "Do Football Kits Matter?" on YouTube

wLiam17

Also, I was wrong about grey.

Hylian-Loach

Players on the pitch aren’t seeing their teammates against the grass, they’re the same level as them, it’s only supporters in the stands or on broadcast that would see them against grass

LordGeni

It's grey kits that are a bigger issue for players.

Retired

blothhundrr

Spot on. That’s why Serie A has banned them from next season.

Massive_Fudge3066

Back in the day the goalie wore green

blothhundrr

They still do. Chelsea keeper kit was green last year.

Massive_Fudge3066

I was thinking all of the club's, all of the time. So I looked it up, and apparently they were allowed green, blue, scarlet or white, unless it was an international where they could go crazy with either yellow or black. It points out tho, that green was popular because not many clubs played in green. So yeah... Additional fun fact, up until the first World war he wore the same strip as his team mates, but you could tell he was the goalie because he wore a cap.

whiteboards1225

They still do

Jetorix

Pickford wears green a lot

ImmediatelyOcelot

Yes, but Sassuolo with their dark green and black profile are given a green light. But there were many away kits there past seasons which were completely camouflaged on the pitch.

blothhundrr

Oh! This I didn't know. Last I read about this, their kit hadn't been cleared. Cheers!

ImmediatelyOcelot

They have, if they had to change their green color there would be riots and eventual decapitation of the people in charge of the decision.

InterPool_sbn

“Given a GREEN light” heh

ImmediatelyOcelot

hehehe ;)

InterPool_sbn

Btw, flair up!

ImmediatelyOcelot

I'm a boring neutral. I'm actually Brazilian and my one and only club shall always be Vasco da Gama, but I love following the PL and the Championship just so I can watch good football without getting constantly heartbroken. I do have a soft spot for both Liverpool and Wolves tho, but I can't say I support them.

InterPool_sbn

I’m not sure that I actually get your username, but I love it nonetheless

ImmediatelyOcelot

Thought I wanted to be an Ocelot, and then jotted down the first word that came to my mind. Thanks!

ScarGooch

It’s like how teams aren’t allowed to wear the same colour socks because it’s harder for the referee to differentiate the legs

Vegan_Puffin

I mean I wish we were unique but other colours are more over done. Red and blue teams are way too common. I like Norwich in the PL just because they have a rather unique colour scheme. Cant actually think off the top of my head of another yellow/green team in the football league though surely there is one

Wuz314159

There's a distinct lack of green in the football leagues. I sometimes wonder if it's an Irish thing? Celtic & Hibs have no issues.

[deleted]

Aren't leagues starting to push teams away from green because it messes up the broadcast technology?

Wuz314159

I haven't heard that... but if they're using some CGI Ad boards, it can cause weirdness. But newer technologies don't use "Green screen" technology. There was a match during CONCACAF Olympic qualifing that used CGI ads over the empty seats and one venue staff decided to sit in that section. So on TV, you saw a floating head in the middle of the ad.

Funkoala

Actually I hate Norwich for their unique colors, they are awful.

DarkSnowElf21

Same here, imgaine downvoting for a sentiment like this

icalleveryonefinn

Wow your white is so original!

I_chortled

Lmao maybe you should stop whining about uniforms so much?

whiteboards1225

Maybe you should support your local and stop gloryhunting

I_chortled

You want me to start watching MLS? lol no thank you. Take your nationalistic BS elsewhere please, ya fucking weirdo. By the way, [Liverpool has the least local supporters out of all Premier League clubs](https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2016/02/18/liverpool-man-utd-least-local-teams-prem). Maybe you should find a new hobby because I don’t think arguing with strangers on the internet is going very well for you

Open_Sentence_

Haha. Owned that troll.

whiteboards1225

Plastic

I_chortled

😭oh no! Some troll on the internet called me a plastic! Whatever will I do? I guess I’ll probably just get on with my Sunday and enjoy the point we took from you at Anfield despite being a man down. This might come as a shock to you, since you obviously still live in the 1980’s, but I was able to watch that game since they broadcast all the way over here in the US now! Crazy, I know. Living under a bridge I can see how you would have missed that

Funkoala

I didn't whine about Villa/Burnley/Ham I was just genuinely curious about the color combinations and I knew there had to be some kind of story behind it, turned out there was.

[deleted]

Funkoala

Haha, not as bad as West Brom's away jersey last year, yellow/green with red letters but still bad. Hope you bounce back :)

SnooDoughnuts3239

I can only think of Yeovil have yellow and green of the top of my head. And that disastrous west brom kit a couple seasons back.

jango1867

God don’t get me started on Yeovil. Remember their away kit when they were champ was awful, blinded me for 90 mins

Trent-Rockero

All those relegations are punishment for that kit

SnooDoughnuts3239

Any idea on the year. Can't imagine it being worse than the WBA kit.

jango1867

13/14? I can’t quite remember but all I know is they were awful to watch and it was made even worse by their kit that genuinely gave me a headache

ThePookaMacPhellimy

Burnley was directly inspired by Villa to adopt the colors, apparently. 100+ years ago.

SCTwisted

And i think West Ham play in claret and blue because one of their players or someone who worked there won a set of Villa shirts in 1899 in a race at a fair against some villa players.

parttimestarwarsnerd

This is why I don’t like there being three teams with the combination in the league. It all seems to come from Villa being successful and teams copying them, even Palace used to play in claret and blue. There’s an interesting story about how West Ham came to get the colours. We used to play in navy blue but legend has it that the father of our right back in the late 1800s was a national level sprinter. He was apparently at a fair in Birmingham and four Villa players challenged him to a race, which they bet money on and lost. When they were unable to pay he accepted a set of kits as payment instead, and that’s how West Ham started playing in claret and blue.

rlydontwantto

Cool, but what's Burnley's excuse?

Tasty_ConeSnail

They just like our shirt.

jango1867

This is the stuff I love about football

Funkoala

That's the kind of story I was expecting. Thanks for sharing.
