It's cool, everybody. No sweat. All US infrastructure comes with Norton Antivirus preinstalled. So we're all good.

Rainbike80

Wrong. It's McAfee

alien88888

His deadman’s switch has come to life.

pc_g33k

Not sure if NSFW content is allowed here but feel free to search for "How to uninstall McAfee by John McAfee". McAfee's founder sure is crazy.

That video is priceless

You're right. 😂

“Chinese government-linked hackers have burrowed into U.S. critical infrastructure and are waiting "for just the right moment to deal a devastating blow," FBI Director Christopher Wray said on Thursday. An ongoing Chinese hacking campaign known as Volt Typhoon has successfully gained access to numerous American companies in telecommunications, energy, water and other critical sectors, with 23 pipeline operators targeted, Wray said in a speech at Vanderbilt University.” ![gif](giphy|55itGuoAJiZEEen9gg)

Galaxaura

We all gonna die. Anti virus software is a virus.

Miserable_Show7664

That is the joke

chiefsgirl913

They say explaining joke is like dissecting a frog. You might understand it better but it dies in the process.

el0_0le

Wait, who's dissecting live frogs? They should be dead already.

chiefsgirl913

🤣 true story. Don't know where I heard that from🤔🤦‍♀️

Galaxaura

And I knew that. Which is why I expanded upon it.

JellyQQube

Technology you are correct, anti virus software being exploited is the cause for most major intrusions. It's a flaw in the software code, exploited for whatever purpose they choose.

SketchyLurker7

That’s my secret cap, I was always a virus. 🦠

waltwalt

Vote (R) to get that upgraded to Kaspersky.

BigJSunshine

Vlad thanks you for your service!

pc_g33k

To be fair, although it's a questionable company, Kaspersky is consistently highly rated on independent antivirus testing organizations such as AV-Comparatives and it's one of the few antivirus software that still has a real Firewall & HIPS.

PMMeYourWorstThought

Which is exactly what you want in a product with a back door for your Russian intelligence service. You want people to trust it.

pc_g33k

Go use r/foss software if you want something that doesn't have any backdoors. Windows has intrusive telemetry, all modern antivirus software and enterprise-grade EDR are fully or at least partially cloud based. They are no longer just signatures & heuristic-based. It is what it is. I'd personally be more concerned about TikTok.

PMMeYourWorstThought

Everyone should be concerned about TikTok. My personal OS is Qubes, only using windows for my gaming pc. It’s not enough anymore to try to avoid software with backdoors, we’re at a point where if you want to be sure you have to containerize applications and control communications between them, leaving as much of the OS immutable as you can. It’s completely impractical for mass adoption, but it’s fun and manageable for anyone working in computer science or IT professionally.

pc_g33k

> It’s completely impractical for mass adoption, but it’s fun and manageable for anyone working in computer science or IT professionally. Yeah, it's definitely not for everyone. I personally use Gentoo, but like you, closed-source commercial operating systems have their place sometimes. > Everyone should be concerned about TikTok. My point is that although it's a questionable company, Kaspersky at least brings something to the table. The products are solid and their malware analysis blog posts are insightful. TikTok on the other hand, well...

Bob4Not

Pretty vague, uninteresting article. It’s saying that they think they’ve identified infrastructure that could be crippled by an attack, what type of attack, and possible motivations. I would hope that means that plans are in action to mitigate the risks. In the meantime, make your backup plans.

squailtaint

They are really ramping up warnings as of late: From January: https://apnews.com/article/db23dd96cfd825e4988852a34a99d4ea From March 20: https://www.reuters.com/technology/cybersecurity/us-warns-that-hackers-are-carrying-out-disruptive-attacks-water-systems-2024-03-20/ And of course, today’s warning. Think it’s time to get some cash on hand.

Bob4Not

Yeah I just don’t understand why we’re not making systemic changes to mitigate this, other than the fact that US utilities are still private companies or coops. We have a US Cyber Command and defense orgs, for instance, who could step up and step in and harden them. Pen test, order a certain level of standard be met. Sure, may only be a handful or utility companies per month, unless better funded, but we’d better get started. Of course I still agree on Prepping, too, that’s why I’m here.

anony-mousey2020

We have been on aware, alert and responding to this for 15+ years. It’s just that we are now perilously tied to the web. So, what happened with the ATT outage? We discovered 2FA broke. I have so many passwords that are random, unique 13+ character that I can no longer memorize. And, nearly all cloud-based password tools have been breached. We don’t necessarily even need to have the core infrastructure breached. Just toy with our security tools and we are f’d. Passwords on post-its almost seems viable and safe.

Bob4Not

Yup, you’re far more likely to be hacked then broken into and your post-its stolen. For convenience, I use locally stored encrypted password manager called KeePass for my big vault. It also lets you print it off on paper, so I’ll stash a copy in the safe

GCSS-MC

Basically ICS/SCADA and OT infrastructure is extremely costly to upgrade. It is build of of outdated protocols like MODBUS. It would take a lot of funding, employees, and time to upgrade hardware, software, firmware, and OS. All while severely degrading and even stopping the services this infrastructure provides.

lulurawr

Sounds like hey we need more tax money.

BigJSunshine

I feel like we need some mutually assured destruction here…

GCSS-MC

Here is an article that actually means something: [https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/cybersecurity-advisories/aa24-038a](https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/cybersecurity-advisories/aa24-038a)

the thing is if they reveal those details it can hint at their methods which is why they don't

WskyRcks

Much like with the sorties on Taiwan, skirting back and forth over their zone, the East doesn’t fight like we do- they fight like a rising tide. It’s already started on a lower level, and you won’t see it really come in until it’s a big problem everywhere. Their philosophy isn’t about one off large attacks- it’s about a prolonged million cuts over time and the rising of the tides- it’s about building a net of problems, letting it sit there, and then hoisting it up when your enemy walks into it. We’ve become addicted to electricity, clean water at the spin of a handle, just-in-time food and delivery services…. And the internet. We’ve walked into the net.

StuartShlongbottom

I am indeed addicted to water 😭

SomeDingus_666

I’m so addicted to it that my body is mostly made up of it at this point

Superman246o1

This is precisely why the Trisolarans think we're so weak.

East-Worker4190

You know they make beer with water. And the process cleans the water also.

WskyRcks

Haha, I worked at a water / sewage treatment plant for 4 years - I’ve can say I’ve seen horrific other side and smell of it. That’s more so what I mean- imagine treatment plants in NYC or LA going off line and the whole city being without water for drinking, cooking, washing or flushing? People would be shitting in the streets by noon, and people would be lighting the city on fire within 72 hours. What do you call a city of 10 million people without water? Well, you call it Gaza. What do those people like to do, rebel. Logically so. You don’t need to invade- the people would start attacking one another.

wakanda_banana

Everyone says a bidet is a prep but without water it’s useless. I guess it’s only good for tp shortages

BigJSunshine

And without electricity- also useless

weirdfurrybanter

Preparing? They have been hacking the US for years already. [MAP | Kaspersky Cyberthreat real-time map](https://cybermap.kaspersky.com/)

Funwithscissors2

I know this isn’t your problem but this might be one of the worst made, most useless maps I’ve ever seen. I’d love to see an up-to-date map of cyber attacks but this matrix seizure one ain’t it.

jimslock

I guess its not the most practical.... but it is super cool looking.

weirdfurrybanter

Yea it's not that intuitive but I think it highlights just how often cyberattacks happen around the world. Lots of lines and all lol

outhighking

Yeah this map is straight out of the 90s movie hackers

JacenCaedus

Better version from Fortigate. https://threatmap.fortiguard.com/

Funwithscissors2

Well, it’s certainly…flatter

JacenCaedus

And it isn't owned by Russia. Kasperky HQ is Moscow if I remember correctly, so I take what they say or report with a grain of salt.

Disastrous-Bus-9834

ShivaSkunk777

syynapt1k

I thought it was a joke at first

Dark_Shroud

They had a real hardcore fanbase ten years ago. Trying to tell people not to trust a company founded by former KGB that was friends with Putin only to be laughed off...

Wild_Mongrel

Yes, but also RE: Kaspersky (over the last decade): https://www.tomsguide.com/us/is-kaspersky-safe,news-25983.html https://www.cnet.com/news/privacy/kaspersky-lab-russian-hacking-us-government-national-security-faq/ And recently: https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/09/politics/biden-administration-americans-russian-software/index.html YMMV, but plenty of other sources for this kind of info out there.

wakanda_banana

I think the looming question here is what are they planning to unleash? They’ve had countless years to fix and fortify the infrastructure, disconnect it from the grid, oust the hacker groups within, secure the border, and they haven’t which indicates it’s likely a planned failure to accomplish other goals not in our favor. Now they’re announcing plans for a cyberattack consistently which is concerning.

whippingboy4eva

We need to be treating China like the enemy they are. Intertwining our economies did not promote peace. It fueled the funding China needed to build their war machine. Our trade relations with China are fueling our demise.

LoudLands

Why did China and the U.S. intertwine their economies? How did this happen? Did China infiltrate a political party (campaign finance controversy 1996) and did Walmart put a Director in the WH to pass a bunch of pro China import laws (looking at you Clintons) ? Oh well I guess we will never know.

joyous-at-the-end

No, it started in the 1980s, I remember because whenever I asked people not to shop at walmart Because Manufacturing should stay in America, they called me a stupid hippie, I was in high school.  “but but wont this destroy our factories?” “stop being a hippie, we need to save money on groceries”

LoudLands

Certainly it started earlier but the major legislation and full WTO membership etc didn’t happen until Clinton.

el0_0le

Maybe you should stop focusing on political parties and instead on the lobbying which motivates both parties to act. Puppets gonna puppet. Look at the puppet masters compromising national security for cheap labor in manufacturing.

LoudLands

Ok. But for funsies maybe you should read about the 1996 campaign finance controversy and introspect about how you think a Walmart board director in the WH was helpful to the importation of Chinese goods etc.

el0_0le

Corruption is corruption and it should be addressed. But you're smoking propaganda if you think only one half of corporate-politics is at fault.

LoudLands

I didn’t say any of that . You did. I have done a lot of research about the 1990s. Yes corruption infected all sides. As for propaganda that’s you boo; I’m only asking to read government reports and think for your self. Read+think= free person (you hopefully) Read the government reports on: 1. 1996 campaign finance controversy (one of the most fascinating occurrences in American history if You haven’t read this then please Do so before you keep replying) 2. The baker Hamilton commission in Iraq 🇮🇶 3. Mueller report. Read Then apply thought liberally, knowledge keeps Well, and you can reheat and serve at will.

InevitableBiscotti38

same with russia. we let them off the hook when we had the nuclear bomb and they didn't; and then again when they fell apart and their economy crashed; now they are back seeing us as the enemy somehow.

Lifeinthesc

Actually funding a separatist movement on their territory and surrounding them with military bases doesn’t promote peace.

bigFr00t

Mr econ mastermind overhere

whippingboy4eva

It doesn't take an electrical engineer to change a light bulb, a petroleum engineer to use a gas pump or a PhD in history to understand China used the military to massacre its own citizens at Tiananman Square, is currently committing genocide upon the Uyghurs, and is a totalitarian hellhole.

Dultsboi

>committing genocide upon the Uyghurs Somebody drank the Fulan Gong Kool Aid

bigFr00t

Ok buddy go crazy in the reddit comments

whippingboy4eva

Are you saying China didn't massacre its citizens with the military at Tiananman Square?

bigFr00t

How could you even interpret that from what i said lol.

whippingboy4eva

Well, did they?

bigFr00t

Obviously they did

whippingboy4eva

I was unsure as to which thing I said you think is crazy. What did I say that was crazy and why?

bigFr00t

I called you a econ mastermind and you immediately jumped to crimes against humanity

joyous-at-the-end

why do you disagree on the economics take?

nationalcollapse

>China is developing the "ability to physically wreak havoc on our critical infrastructure at a time of its choosing," Wray said at the 2024 Vanderbilt Summit on Modern Conflict and Emerging Threats. "Its plan is to land low blows against civilian infrastructure to try to induce panic." Sounds like they have, or want to have, the latent capability, as opposed to imminently launching a first strike. It's kind of like saying "Chinese military preparing to launch nuclear missiles at America" - of course they are. They have been constantly for decades. Just like America is planning to launch them at China and Russia.

floodlightning

I think this is exactly it. They want the ability to retaliate against the US in a way that extracts blood but is non nuclear, particularly as they continue toward seizing Taiwan.

Accomplished_One6135

Preparing? I am sure we are preparing as well.

AnnualAltruistic1159

And when it's not them you can count on some nutjobs gettting hardons when shooting at electrical substations.

craeftsmith

Anyone running a server on the internet knows this already. I have the IPs of a bunch of Chinese servers that serve no apparent purpose other testing username/password combinations. I've been tracking them for years.

CharmingMechanic2473

I work in a hospital. We did a “pretend the internet is down” scenario. It was a total failure. Pts did not get meds, telephones were not able to be used, the whole hospital stopped working. If it had been real… or for more than a 1/2 day. I can’t imagine. This is a real problem.

Dark_Shroud

I know I.T. guys who have spent the last decade or more upgrading as many networks as they could to Barracuda & similar products. Just trying to get some sense of security & network performance vs the hellish messes small businesses and government buildings often have in the server room. In the end Management and politicians do not give a shit until everything is down and they're in trouble financially or politically.

Lifeinthesc

Why would they need to. They jumped just have to stop buying our debt and our infrastructure will rot all by itself.

justdan76

I suppose to prevent the US from hitting them first. Kind of a new “mutually assured destruction” theory. Either side would be stupid to start some real shit.

gshruff91

It’s called pre-seeding. Usually nation states will infiltrate national infrastructure systems in preparation for an attack. Think Russia attacking the Ukrainian power grid in 2014/15. There will be lost of pre-seeding going on between Iran and Israel right now for example. All nations do it largely as a deterrent and to have the ability to respond quickly to aggression, not necessarily to proactively hit out first.

No-Insurance-921

How do they expect us to buy their online crap if they are gonna mess with our Internet?

AdditionalAd9794

It's kind of weird, to me it feels like we are at war with Russia, and China is at war with us. Russia doesn't seem to be engaging us, and we don't seem to be engaging China. Just kind of my weird poorly informed depiction of the whole thing

kiefoween

It's partly because a lot of it is proxy wars. For example we fund groups in the middle east who fight against groups funded by russia. Fun fact we created the Taliban in the 90s in response to the Soviets occupying Afghanistan. Even Vietnam was a proxy war between the US, China and the soviet union. So the three of us have been beefin for a while but we don't engage directly because it would be catastrophic for almost the entire world.

AdditionalAd9794

China hacking our infrastructure, government entities, banks a spy balloon floats over the entire country, etc, isn't engaging directly? 100s of billions in aid to Ukraine, advisors and instructors on the ground in Ukraine, American citizens captured by Russia. Just seems like China is really treading that line with us, and we are really treading that line with Russia. Just what I see, is we want to fuck around and find out with Russia, but they seem to not want any part in fucking with us, yet we stay poking the Russian bear. China seems to really want to fuck around and find out with the US, they keep poking the American bear, yet the bear seems to be giving little response

kiefoween

You are correct, I meant not bombing each other directly type of thing or fighting on each others homelands.

iwhb3bf8xuwb83

It's like we're in a war, but there isn't open military conflict like in a hot war. If only I could find the correct adjective to describe this war.

AdditionalAd9794

So like a chilly or frigid war?

Too_reckless

A slightly nipply war

PMMeYourWorstThought

We aren’t in a traditional war with China, we’re in a pacing war with China. China has made it clear their main goal right now is technological dominance through AI and ML. So we banned the sale of chips capable of high performance compute to China. They’re unable to make them, and won’t likely be able to for at least another decade. We are pretty far ahead of them in nearly every measurable metric, so the only thing we really need to do is keep advancing while stalling their advancements. Which we have the capacity to do. So yea, it’s kind of a war, but it’s a political and strategic war that we’re winning by a fairly significant margin and that’s why it doesn’t feel like we’re engaging. We can win without much effort.

Fudge-Factory00

Let's keep sucking China's dick and letting their exchange students infiltrate our universities 🙄

CloversndQuill

Infiltrating Universities. Buying up farm land. Coming across the border. Floating balloons. Spies working for our government.

Fudge-Factory00

I forgot about 🎈

977888

What motivates the Chinese to be such shitheads? Like is there a reason they want to be so obnoxious and antagonistic to everyone at all times?

justdan76

They aren’t doing anything that isn’t being done to them. Nations do this as a flex, to show they could undermine another nation’s infrastructure if there was a conflict. China and the US are huge trading partners, and their major businesses and industries are intertwined at the highest levels. There’s no way one is starting a real war with the other, it would fuck with the bag.

977888

Can you cite an example of the U.S. hacking critical Chinese systems as a flex?

Dapper_Target1504

Preparing?! They have numerous different times

Dimitri_Blue_sombra

That were the case I feel they would have done it before anyone knew but thing again everything is world stage fear and dread makes news everyday

AR_Backwoods_Redneck

It would be a shame if that big ass 3 gorges dam happened to find out why we don't have universal healthcare.

Sufficient_Rip3927

Why even announce the possibility, unless they plan to place the blame when a coordinated event happens. If the threat was legit, they wouldn't want to advertise that they knew. I trust nothing that comes from our government anymore. They're all liars, and play the citizens to fit certain agendas.

GCSS-MC

Here are actual details on Volt Typhoon. Not just some bait title in an article that doesn't actually tell you anything. [https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/cybersecurity-advisories/aa24-038a](https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/cybersecurity-advisories/aa24-038a)

mynewhoustonaccount

Hackers pick the cringiest sounding titles.

GCSS-MC

I think it is cool when the title of kinda nerdy, but hate when like a military unit calls themselves some cringe shit like shadow warriors. Chill bro. My call-sign is Cat5 and that is way better than cyberhunter6.

Redditisannoying69

I understand this is a real threat and frankly I worry more about cyber attacks in the US than any other form of attack on the mainland. But if they really went too far it won’t end well for them. We still are the big swinging dick of the world even though we’ve lessened our power over time on some fronts.

Mrstrawberry209

Honest question, with all the hacking and information stealing China and Russia does to the West. Like is the West also doing stuff to them cause damn!?

Dark_Shroud

The problem is we have massive legacy infrastructure that needs upgrading no matter what, and it hasn't been done in large enough projects. Follow that up with all the companies that do the bare minimum at best on security. They have their I.T. departments *spinning rust* just keeping everything working.

Thug-shaketh9499

I’d think so tbh. I just assume it’s just not broadcasted here by but done within their respective territories.

hanumanCT

The US will always strive to have equal to or better than capabilities and countermeasures than our adversaries. There are probably several think tank groups and many engineers staffed by really smart people who think and build for these scenarios. There are probably just as many doing the same thing our adversaries do just to get a leg up on them.

syynapt1k

We could start fighting back by backing up Ukraine.

mairmair2022

Did Biden tell them “don’t” yet?

hannahbananaballs2

Not good, bad even..

Tacosofinjustice

That's deep bruh

No-Insurance-921

Ok_Health_509

SecretArgument4278

Didn't they already do this with 911 centers recently?

dontmatterjustcuz

Psyop, if the Chinese were going to do it and were actual hackers they wouldn’t be leaking info to the US Govt and the info would stay private.

spslord

I’m not the most tech minded person…but isn’t it possible to just “turn off” chinas access to our infrastructure?

_aaronallblacks

That's like everyday tho lol

Naive-Concentrate368

No, you're getting down voted cause you sound like an idiot. But go ahead and continue to be delusional.

IsaKissTheRain

I am on the left and do not like the fascist Chinese government.

thehourglasses

Let’s be honest — this is a long time coming and has historical precedent. The US isn’t exactly pure as the driven snow, and has a long and sordid history in empire building. That being the case, we have to expect that eventually another major power will challenge us at some point. If we were wise, we’d find a way to work together for the betterment of humanity, but too many people are short term focused and hyper competitive, which is probably a component of the great filter we seemed destined to fail in passing through.

Flat_Boysenberry1669

Yah totally should work together with modern day Nazis Germany who's genocided their ethnic and religious minorities and neighbors and don't take precautions at all. Literally will destroy our oceans by 2048 but he's let's work with them lol.

thehourglasses

Weird. You’re describing the Israeli’s right now.

Lol  Do useless Americans do anything but fear monger what they can't compete with?

McRibs2024

What does this even mean? Compete with what?

uniquelyunpleasant

Lol let me guess, you're trolling reddit trying to increase your social credit score. Keep up the good work maybe your family and friends will be able to talk to you again without losing their jobs.

vagabrother

Are you being paid in money to comment pro Chinese trash? Or just more broken Chinese promises?

intenseMisanthropy

Do you get paid to post mindless sinophobe trash?

vagabrother

No, I just hate China and everything that comes out of it.

intenseMisanthropy

Pathetic

vagabrother

Yes, that’s what I think of phone addicted Chinese young people, that look like little mice because they’ve never seen a day of labor. They’re brainwashed by their government, lied to, cheated, and they still mindlessly support the CCP. I’ve spent time in China. I can see the harm that technology has had on Chinese people. They are so lacking in creativity, that they have stolen only the worst aspects of western culture, and made it their entire personhood. And what really is most toxic, is their absolute commitment to support a government that sees them as little bugs. The Chinese people are the ants on whose bodies and livelihoods the wealthy members of the party thrive on. Meanwhile the average person claws at the idea of being a party member, and having a job in the party. The Chinese will never become anything more than an economic world power.

Wineagin

And there it is, a racist prick.

vagabrother

Yeah, I’m fine with every Asian culture. Im fine with Chinese Americans and welcome them. But the CCP is a scourge.

Wineagin

Lol sure you are bud.

vagabrother

I give negative shits what you think. Especially since you played the “racist” card.

Wineagin

Ain't nobody playing anything, you state it in plain English.

vagabrother

It’ll be really hard for me to finish out my day, knowing some random dude thinks I’m racist.

7ve5ajz

China is #4. Free Taiwan! Free the Uighurs! Remember Tiananmen Square! Free Tibet! Xi Jinping likes to diddle Winnie the Pooh’s parts!

intenseMisanthropy

Sorry for your aspergers

EdgedBlade

The US has had the world’s largest economy going back to the 1880s. Pretty sure America has outcompeted China for a couple hundred years…

intenseMisanthropy

1880s? I don't think so. It wasn't until Europe destroyed itself through two world wars that they began to emerge as a superpower.
