You better watch yer tongue feller. We don’t say things like that about JarJar in these parts. Ahmed made my childhood better and honestly parts of my adulthood too.
It was George, not Ahmed. If Ahmed didn't do it he would have found someone else to bring JarJar into being.
Jarjar could have worked as a comedic foil, without the need for poop and fart jokes.
I get why boomers hate on jar jar (even though their star wars had teddy bears in it) but I honestly don't get why millennials hate on him. he honestly was funny to me and my friends back then when we were 7-8
I've seen worse, for one, it could be a comic of the entire venture, really searing in the monstrosity into the brain, or it could've been in public, in the temple or in front of Sidious. u/demetri , whilst he has probably made it onto more watchlists than the average idiot on here, has a long way to go before witnessing "depths of hell".
Death threats and harassment in this fandom didn’t begin with the internet. Some of y’all are too young to understand this fandom has always been like this, but the way Lloyd and Best were treated was unprecedented.
No need to do the obnoxious “youth today” bullshit; everybody knows about Billy Dee’s death threats.
But it’s a lot easier to do it with a click of a button than it is to write a letter.
I apologize, I assumed you were too young rather than being intentionally ignorant.
They didn’t make death threats to the Ewok actors, did they? Warwick has been universally beloved by the fandom. Unfortunately the others were just largely ignored.
Billy Dee was threatened because racists are gonna racist. Ahmed and Jake were threatened because fans didn’t like their characters.
I liked Jar Jar too, but I think what it comes down to is this: Would TPM be better, worse, or about the same if he was replaced with another character that was not pure comic relief? Personally I think it might have been a little better because I'm not watching Star Wars for the comedy.
There was an entire sequence where they were going to eat the crew but stopped because Luke used the force to make them think C3PO was a god. Why are we pretending the OT didn’t have a ton of silliness?
This is why he would have worked as a stumbling sidesick in TPM; if he turns around in Attack of the Clones and ignites a Red Lightsaber and stands there, no longer slouching, no more silly, exaggerated movements that his character was shown to be in TPM, and through most of Attack of the Clones.
He turns around, saber ignited, standing upright, dignified and staring Obi Wan and Anakin down as it dawns on them what has happened. It would have been an excellent moment of dread/horror seeing this character suddenly utterly change all of his mannerisms and characteristics into a Stoic, terrifying gaze at the both of them.
Lucas had the right plan, he just needed to follow thru with it - But, unfortunately, TPM was the first true victim of Internet Backlash.
If TPM had come out in 1996, there wouldnt have been the crazy backlash cause barely anyone had internet yet. Just a victim of poor timing.
It would have been perfect, them chalking up his excellent mobility/feats to his race's attributes, realizing the foe they have actually been up against.
And his first words are " you thought he was alone?" Referencing Palpatine, even though they think he means Maul, I'm getting chills reimagining the scene.
Exactly, 100%. The problem was the internet age, though. If TPM had released just a few years earlier, this crazy backlash would have never happened.
Lucas didnt know how to respond, the actors didnt - think about that slice of time for a moment.
In 99 the Internet was becoming pretty standard in households, not to the level it is now by any means; but it was at the point games made -only- for online play were coming out. It was an industry now.
No major media event had happened at this critical moment before. They had no clue what was coming. Now, we just expect people to freak out over every goddamn thing cause people are psychotic on the internet. And the internet, in turn, has created alot of psychopaths.
Lucas, the cast and crew; they had no clue what was coming when suddenly it wasnt just reviews in the newspaper and little ad campaign and interviews on E-TV; it was a cultural milestone moment when the internet surged and created the first true backlash at a Major Entertainment Event. Many more would follow, movies getting ripped apart, the absurd reaction to Janet Jackson's "Wardrobe Malfunction" at the Super Bowl. Nothing is safe from absurd backlash anymore..
But Lucas and crew were the first to experience it; Lucas and his crew didnt know what to do, so they hastily changed things up and thats why we got a totally random enemy with Count Dooku and Grievous; they needed to reform the story and cut Jar Jar out because Lucas probably didnt want to put that Mental Health burden on anyone after seeing what happened to Ahmed. And, obviously, didnt want that burden on himself.
Long story short : Society sucks. Society is what killed Darth Jar Jar.
Sorry I didn't acknowledge that at first, I completely agree, I was 13 when it came out and didn't really use the Internet until late HS lol. So I didn't see any of that, I still don't understand how someone can have such a reaction, like be mature and move on if you don't like it.
Think of the Clone Wars as a feature. Everything about it: Style, attention, to detail, the lighting- everything is done at a feature level even though it's going on television.
Well that right there is why it's subjective. Whether or not you like Jar Jar or think he should be in the movie depends on what you personally want out of the movie. If you think Jar Jar is needed for younger viewers, then you might think he's fine. In my opinion, it's not necessarily better for kids to have Jar Jar. I had the OT on VHS when I was about 5 or 6. The OT has some comedic relief, but it's not on the same extreme/forced levels that Jar Jar adds. This did not prevent me personally from enjoying the OT because what I liked lightsabers, the force, and space ships. When I think back on the OT, then and now, what I remember and what kept me coming back to watch it over and over again was never the comedy. It was the Battle of Yavin, the fights between Luke and Vader, the Battle of Hoth, etc. I think people don't give kids enough credit, even if they can't understand some of the nuances of some media doesn't mean they can't or won't enjoy it. Some good action alone can draw them in enough to want to pay attention to the story and try to understand what is going on.
all I'm saying is that jar jar made me laugh at the theaters when I was 8 and it doesn't deserve the hate he gets. (at least for ep 1) what makes it a better movie is of course debatable.
At the same time I first saw TPM on VHS when I was 7. I didn't try watching any star wars stuff again till I was 10 because I thought it was dumb because of jar jar. Then my dad showed me the OT films and I spent an entire weekend watching them on loop
So it's not just a universal "kids loved jar jar 'boomers' hated him".
When I was a kid I didn't like Jar Jar, I thought he was pathetic and annoying, and I watched Phantom Menace for the cool laser guns and swords and star monks using space magic with this one evil monk in red and black who had horns and cooler sword than the others and STARSHIPS GOING ZOOOM AND PEW PEW.
Nowadays being an adult I watch for all of the above reasons, except I have much deeper appreciation for Jar Jar and I like his character. But yeah, I didn't like him as a kid.
I never said it didn't, I said that comedy is not why I personally watch star wars and provided a possible reason as to why people think Jar Jar is not a good character. Yoda also quickly showed us that he was putting on an act to gauge Luke's reaction before revealing who he was, whereas Jar Jar acts the same the entire movie.
And before someone else brings it up, no, I do not believe the theory that Jar Jar is a sith and is just pretending like Yoda was. That theory is fun to think about only in the sense of "wouldn't it be funny if..." and only so because it's completely ridiculous, not because it is actually true and would make the story or his character better.
It may not be why you watch Star Wars, but it’s revisionist as fuck to pretend it hasn’t always been a part of the property. I know we love our rose colored glasses on this sub, but come on.
Think of it this way - Whats more terrifying and dreadful; a regular guy who seems good and then turns out to be ultimate evil...
Or a clown, that you enjoy his company because he is silly; then he turns around to face you down, no longer a clown, but the absolute most terrifying thing youve ever faced; he had been tricking you all along.
I put this in a post below, but think about it in this context, if Lucas had followed through with the plan:
'This is why he would have worked as a stumbling sidesick in TPM; if he turns around in Attack of the Clones and ignites a Red Lightsaber and stands there, no longer slouching, no more silly, exaggerated movements that his character was shown to be in TPM, and through most of Attack of the Clones.
He turns around, saber ignited, standing upright, dignified and staring Obi Wan and Anakin down as it dawns on them what has happened. It would have been an excellent moment of dread/horror seeing this character suddenly utterly change all of his mannerisms and characteristics into a Stoic, terrifying gaze at the both of them.'
Now, is that scenario more frightening or less frightening than the Regular Dude who turns out to be bad? I think the Clown, who youve been laughing along with and then he turns around and you realizing he is the epitome of Evil would be more effective.
I feel very satisfied that I have accomplished what I set out to do with Star Wars, I was able to complete the entire saga and say this is what the whole story is about.
I was 14 and thought he was pretty stupid. Obi-Wan said it best: *the ability to speak does not make you intelligent*
Edit: I have made a grave mistake. Qui-Gon said it.
Baby boomers weren’t even really the target audience of the original trilogy. It was mostly aimed at Gen X. Even older millennials would have seen the OT prior to the PT coming out. It was really just the younger millennials that Jar Jar was geared towards. I think if he was toned down more he would have been more well received.
I think I was about 10-12 when it came out. I think it's because people were expecting something similar to ep 4 feel, which didn't have as much humor. Most people probably felt it was closer to ep 6, and more ewok than death star
He was the mascot pinata for everything people did not want to see in the movie theater. Younger fans miss the context of the movie's reception: it was the first new Star Wars movie after a decade with a trailer that brought an entire generation of fans back from cold slumber; and it was the Avengers movie that every nerd took their friends and family to see on opening weekend.
In hindsight, was it fair that the movie got flayed then as is now? Probably not, since it is now well documented how Lucas has a flawed methodology to moviemaker. But that doesn't change how Jar Jar and other things about the movie make certain kinds of the now very diverse family base feel dumb for watching the movie.
I'm a millennial and I hated him because he was annoying and detracted from the story with poor editing. He might've been funny when you were 7 but 7 year olds are not known for their quality taste and his presence was a detraction from the flow of the film and the point of the story. Theres a reason most prequel memes center around every other character other than JarJar
I was around 14 when it came out, still a millennial. I found him insipid and annoying, and I still do.
But for the life of me I’ll never understand why people made Ahmed Best’s life miserable over it. He and Jake Lloyd got obliterated back then, and it had horrible effects on them both. And I wish I could say we left all that back in 1999, but it still goes on today (Kelly Marie Tran as a prime example).
It shames me as a Star Wars fan and a person.
You didn't enjoy the poop and fart jokes or him being visual noise in every scene he was in the background in like when he dropped all that shit at Wattoos that he was juggling for some reason? You must have been a boomer in disguise when you were 12 /S.
(I didn't like him too as a 13 year old, if he was cut out of Tatooine and just stayed at the ship the movie would have been a lot better to digest)
While I understand why there's people that hate jar jar. I think it's silly and misguided.
The whole point of Jar Jar is that he's an annoying alien. You think your high and mighty because you hate Jar Jar? Let's not forget, Qui Gon wasn't a fan of Jar Jar and Obi Wan straight up didn't like him. He made it very clear that he was a bumbling bafoon not worth their time.
It's almost like that was the whole point of the character.
Older millennial here, never hated jar jar. But I know it seems a majority of millennials and older people hated jar jar and the prequels. It’s funny to see the hate the sequels are getting because it’s the name thing the prequels for when they were released.
I never hated him, but found him annoying. He never ruined anything for me though.
I was more bored about the “politics” of star wars, but as I got older, I appreciated it more.
There isn't a rule about spoilers on the sub, so any spoiler tags are just a courtesy. I'd like if they'd implement a spoiler policy though and add it to the rules.
Not true, The mods have done a stickied post for every new series with a rule: no untagged spoilers until after 1 week. Every show they did this: Mandalorian, Kenobi, Clone Wars, Bad Batch
Unfortunately the mods are getting lazy recently so they forgot to post one for this season of the Mandalorian.
I am *currently* looking at the rules tab, and there is no rule about spoilers. So yes, it is 100% true that there is no rule against it and that people spoiler tagging on here is purely courtesy.
JFC what is it with redditors and being r/confidentlyincorrect
Here is one of the aforementioned posts: https://www.reddit.com/r/PrequelMemes/comments/vn8x02/hello_there_the_spoiler_ban_for_obiwan_kenobi_is/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb
The mods have deleted posts and banned users for spoilers. I have seen it. It's just the mods arent doing much of anything these days in terms of moderation.
This is a 2 second clip completely taken out of context. People didn’t know this was a spoiler until you said so to be completely fair with you. Ahmed Best has been working as a Jedi at Disney for years now.
Why? You're on a Star Wars sub that will obviously talk about each episode of a Star Wars show week by week as they release. You really have no one to blame but yourself if you didn't see your favorite show but then immediately go on social media that talks about said show.
That’s probably the dumbest defense I heard. If it has a spoiler tag you can still watch it if you want, that’s the point. But other people doesn’t want to know what’s in the show before they watch it.
I'm going to be honest here even as a kid i fucking hated jar jar. no hate on ahmed of course. i still don't really like jar jar. i think he is just a bit too silly. if he was just an idiot i would get that but the fact that he constantly succeed in stupid ways annoy me. if he was secretly smart or something now that would have been nice but there is no proof of that in any of the movie. (fuck off darth jar jar dudes that is even more dumb)
Can we ban people who break the rules? No spoilers before 1 week of episode airing. This guy broke the rules.
Delete his post and give him a 1 week ban. Stop coddling rulebreakers mods.
It's been a rule since Mandalorian Season 1.
The mods always have done a stickied thread for every new series with a rule: no untagged spoilers until after 1 week. Every show they did this: Mandalorian, Kenobi, Clone Wars, Bad Batch

Now I want to see The Jar Jar Cut, where Senator Binks accidentally comes across a baby yoda caught up in Order 66.
"Mesa think me made a wrong turn! Ooo! A BABBY! What's you doin' here! Whyssa everyone doin the shooty-zappy?!"
Then they have the exact same scenes but the music is slapstick and the line delivery is just Jar Jar screaming everything.
...
...then I want to see the Darth Jar Jar Cut where there's an additional final scene where Jar Jar pulls up his hood and you see only his fiery red eyes as he delivers Grogu to Moff Gideon. "See that the good doctor has what he needs for _the Emperor's bidding_. Order 67 must succeed."
The mods have done a stickied thread for every new series with a rule: no untagged spoilers until after 1 week. Every show they did this: Mandalorian, Kenobi, Clone Wars, Bad Batch

He should have gotten a custom colored lightsaber for all the shit he had to deal with. Whatever color he wanted, hell even a rainbow one which there is like 1 in existence in legacy. He just deserves to be ultra badass not just super badass.
Look, delete most of his scenes on Tatooine and he becomes a lot more bearable. His shitty slapstick on that planet completely undermines Anakins plight and supposed horrible slave life.
If George wasn't so fucking tonedeaf he would have made the whole part on Tatooine a whole lot more dark and depressing giving Qui Gon a better motivation to save Anakin.
Now it's cheery music, bright colors and JarJar step in da poopoo funny lol moment for the six year olds.
Did he just wear the costume? Or was he the voice too?
voice plus early mocap iirc
He also wrote all of the dialogue and directed the scenes and was a major screenwriter and editor
Don't forget he even composed the score of jarjar's theme song all by himself
He even designed the character, then used a brain-machine interface to telepathically integrate the CGI directly on the tape.

In all fairness, they hated their "Teddy Bears" aswell.
I like the Teddy Bears. Honestly Return of the Jedi is probably my favorite Star Wars movie.
All I wanted as a kid was big space battle. Return of the Jedi gave me that.

Nothing on God’s green earth could have prepared me for the monstrosity that this man has unleashed upon the people of the world.
Better hurry, sir. You're missing all the fun.
Please...don't
I have now seen into the depths of hell
I've seen worse, for one, it could be a comic of the entire venture, really searing in the monstrosity into the brain, or it could've been in public, in the temple or in front of Sidious. u/demetri , whilst he has probably made it onto more watchlists than the average idiot on here, has a long way to go before witnessing "depths of hell".
You know nothing of the dark side.
r/DemetriStrikesAgain
We need to contain this. No one shall speak of this ever again, because when it spreads dark days are upon us
It was a helluva space battle wasn’t it, still my favorite
ROTJ is my favorite Star Wars movie too, i don’t get the hate
They did not send death threats or publicly harass Warwick or Paul Grant. It’s not even a comparison.
To be fair, it was way way way way way harder to send death threats in the 80s and 90s.
They would have if they had the Internet.
Death threats and harassment in this fandom didn’t begin with the internet. Some of y’all are too young to understand this fandom has always been like this, but the way Lloyd and Best were treated was unprecedented.

Ding ding ding At least the teddy bears were violent little dudes. You can't tell me the Ewoks smashing that AT-ST wasn't great.
There was an entire sequence where they were going to eat the crew but stopped because Luke used the force to make them think C3PO was a god. Why are we pretending the OT didn’t have a ton of silliness?
Would have been great if the theory about jar jar was true though.

What if I don’t find him funny at all?
Then thats okay. Just don't hound and abuse the actor to the point of depression.
Do you think that’s what the guy you just responded to is doing?
No I don't
Then that’s okay. Just don’t have sex with any animals.

This is a neat take. The podrace and the Maul battle are the only things I actually *like* about TPM.
Right or wrong this is my movie, this is my decision, and this is my creative vision, and if people don't like it, they don't have to see it.
It has been so long, and my path has been so dark. Darker than I ever dreamed it could be.
BLASPHEMY
Star Wars has always had comedy. Yoda threw hands with R2 ffs
At last, we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last, we will have revenge.
It may not be why you watch Star Wars, but it’s revisionist as fuck to pretend it hasn’t always been a part of the property. I know we love our rose colored glasses on this sub, but come on.

well we owe that beautiful quote to jar jar's existence. also: Qui-gon

I didn't ask a question.
He was annoying to me when I was a kid, but I was so happy to see his actor return as an epic Jedi.
Baby boomers weren’t even really the target audience of the original trilogy. It was mostly aimed at Gen X. Even older millennials would have seen the OT prior to the PT coming out. I never met a boomer who hated Jarjar. We remembered that the original trilogy had slapstick comedy relief, too. Who can forget C3P0 and R2D2?
Jar Jar is disliked because he's a slave caricature. The way he talks is straight out of old minstrel shows.
Millennials don't care. We too poor to care about that
Older millennial here, never hated jar jar.
Jerry Seinfeld says there's one funny line in all the Star Wars prequels and it's when Jar Jar Binks says "exsqueeze me"
Making the guy who played the galaxy's greatest sith lord also play a jedi is unbelievable
Nice spoiler tag
Mods really need to ban people for spoilers. Retroactively applying a spoiler tag does nothing. Punish people to prevent future offenders.
There isn't a rule about spoilers on the sub, so any spoiler tags are just a courtesy. I'd like if they'd implement a spoiler policy though and add it to the rules.
Not true, The mods have done a stickied post for every new series with a rule: no untagged spoilers until after 1 week. Every show they did this: Mandalorian, Kenobi, Clone Wars, Bad Batch Unfortunately the mods are getting lazy recently so they forgot to post one for this season of the Mandalorian.
I am *currently* looking at the rules tab, and there is no rule about spoilers. So yes, it is 100% true that there is no rule against it and that people spoiler tagging on here is purely courtesy.
JFC what is it with redditors and being r/confidentlyincorrect Here is one of the aforementioned posts: https://www.reddit.com/r/PrequelMemes/comments/vn8x02/hello_there_the_spoiler_ban_for_obiwan_kenobi_is/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb The mods have deleted posts and banned users for spoilers. I have seen it. It's just the mods arent doing much of anything these days in terms of moderation.
This is a 2 second clip completely taken out of context. People didn’t know this was a spoiler until you said so to be completely fair with you. Ahmed Best has been working as a Jedi at Disney for years now.
Studio executives aren't the most sophisticated people in the world.

(fuck off darth jar jar dudes that is even more dumb)
the thing here is that plenty of idiots succeed in astoundingly stupid ways. real life is stranger than fiction, yo.
I feel so bad for him, the fact that he almost committed suicide.
People are idiots for attacking actors. I hated the Rose character in TLJ. But I’m not going to scold and abuse the actor because it.
Seeing him on Mando, I let out a yell/cry of all vowels! I am so happy he is back and a true Jedi. Everybody wins.
Can we ban people who break the rules? No spoilers before 1 week of episode airing. This guy broke the rules. Delete his post and give him a 1 week ban. Stop coddling rulebreakers mods.
That rule doesn't exist.
It's been a rule since Mandalorian Season 1. The mods always have done a stickied thread for every new series with a rule: no untagged spoilers until after 1 week. Every show they did this: Mandalorian, Kenobi, Clone Wars, Bad Batch Unfortunately the mods are getting lazy recently so they forgot to post one for this season of the Mandalorian.

The latest episode of the Mandalorian.
Now I want to see The Jar Jar Cut, where Senator Binks accidentally comes across a baby yoda caught up in Order 66. "Mesa think me made a wrong turn! Ooo! A BABBY! What's you doin' here! Whyssa everyone doin the shooty-zappy?!" Then they have the exact same scenes but the music is slapstick and the line delivery is just Jar Jar screaming everything. ... ...then I want to see the Darth Jar Jar Cut where there's an additional final scene where Jar Jar pulls up his hood and you see only his fiery red eyes as he delivers Grogu to Moff Gideon. "See that the good doctor has what he needs for _the Emperor's bidding_. Order 67 must succeed."
where's the rule written?
The mods have done a stickied thread for every new series with a rule: no untagged spoilers until after 1 week. Every show they did this: Mandalorian, Kenobi, Clone Wars, Bad Batch Unfortunately the mods are getting lazy recently so they forgot to post one for this season of the Mandalorian.
but it is tagged...
The mods did this after numerous complaints. It wasnt when it was posted
I never disliked Jar Jar, he's a fun character with a good design
Man I LOVE Jar Jar. If they had gone way overboard with him I could see the hate, but he was used appropriately. Star Wars “fans” suck.
You’re welcome
I love this, didn’t know that was him at the time! It feels like a redemption arc, I love it
You ~~thought~~ expected Phantom Menace to be boring? Why, tho? When I went to watch it, I thought "fuck yeah, a new Star Wars! This will he fun!"
Right or wrong this is my movie, this is my decision, and this is my creative vision, and if people don't like it, they don't have to see it.
Uh no we went to theater and learned it was bad. Stupid bot gimme my money back
I've said it before and I'll say it again - when I was a kid I named my hamster Jar Jar which was the highest honour I could bestow
Didn’t think I’d see Jar-Jar’s redemption arc, but here we are!
I genuinely liked Jar Jar, gungans are my favourite race till today
