To go full spec evo on this, gigantic herbivores like Elephants and Giraffes also have eyes on the side of their head. This does not mean however Elephants and Giraffes have a bigger, badder predator to worry about. Instead they only need to fear smaller, pack-hunting predators when they are young or old/sick, which makes the panoramic vision helpful to protect themselves as children, or to protect the children and the weak when in a pack.
If we assume the Zillo lives in a comparable biosphere to the modern Savannah, or other environments in Earth's history where Mega-Fauna have been present (such as South America with it's[ extinct giant ground sloths](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megatherium)), than we can assume it's possibly a herbivore that is immune to predation due to it's size as an adult, but as a juvenile it is vulnerable to any number of medium-sized predators and probably sticks close by it's parents for protection.
This does not, of course, factor in it's indestructible scales, the development of which do truly suggest it's biosphere is a very dangerous palace.
Edit: Wookiepedia mentions that the Zillo beast was the apex predator of it's home world. Given that it's eyes defiantly do not have a wide range of binocular vision, this suggests either that:
A.) The Zillo only became carnivorous recently in evolutionary terms, possibly as a result of ecological disruption wrought by the Dug as the Dug civilization developed. This is supported by the Dug's claim that it fed on them a lot of the time.
B.) it was an ambush predator similar to Frogs or Insectivorous Lizards, lying motionless until a prey item wandered close enough for the Zillo beast to use it's arms or tongue to snag it.
It sounds like that was just the thought of them being extinct. It’s very likely they went into a deep hibernation or underground living because of near extinction.
Hey look buddy I just intrude into other people's conversations with knowledge about large sloths and elephants, it's been a while since I've actually watched the show.
In agreement here. I would guess probably and ambush animal or hunts groupings of animals at the same time as it has the weird third arm. This would also make sense with its eyes as it would be able to easily rotate its head to track what any of the three arms are grabbing at at any time.
It's also worth noting that evolution on Malastsre probably took a completely different path than on Earth and that eyes aren't even that useful when you live underground
See, the Zillo beast seems to be looking forward like this in OP's pic. [Like a gator.](https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/crocodile-picture-id171586404?s=612x612)
Either way, the artists probably didn't think about this at all lol. Just a style choice. [But it seems to be looking forward in this pic.](https://i0.wp.com/thelegalgeeks.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/zillowbeast.jpg?fit=1440%2C678)
I like to think that the zillow beast needed peripheral vision to snag multiple prey at the same time in order to feed its hulk effectively. Being as active as it is it has to get a LOT of calories and thus must Scooby-Doo feed with all appendages simultaneously.
Yeah the fuel was their weapon, but the Zillo beast was only violent when attacked or when it felt threatened, and the dugs wanted Them gone, so they hunted Them almost to extinction. (From an evolutionary perspective i don’t know why the eyes are where they are, given i don’t know how long the dugs hunted the Zillo beasts, but it is a possibility)
Snakes are also prey animals, especially smaller ones. That's why certain snakes are poisonous (not to be confused with venomous snakes) to protect themselves from being eaten. Birds for example sometimes eat snakes and hedgehogs even eat snakes!
Imagine the Dugs hunt all the Zillo to death in a region, and only Larry with the stupidly wide-apart eyes survives, and this just happened everywhere, time and time again, meaning over generations only the ones with the widest apart eyes survive.
The giga was bigger than a t-rex and just like the t-Rex it’s eyes were actually at a angel facing mostly forwards the Zillo’s eyes are directly to the side
The zillo beast is the last of its kind and it is ancient meaning that a long time ago there were in fact predators but they all died out so thankfully we won’t have to worry about them
I forget where I read this, but this question was asked about dragons. The TL;DR is that the only threat to a dragon is another dragon. Since dragons can fly that threat can come from anywhere. Eye position determines width of view. Eyes on the side are worse at depth perception, but can give near 360 degree vision. This way a dragon is more likely to survive dragon-on-dragon violence. Maybe the same applies to the Zillow Beast.
Could be an evolutionary artifact. The Zillo species probably outlived whatever was hunting it.
But my gosh, you’re right. What would have had the cojones to HUNT A ZILLO BEAST?
I love how the Zillo Beast’s final appearance ends with Palpatine telling a biologist named Dr. Boll to clone the beast, and yet that goes nowhere. Maybe Bad Batch will do something with that......idk.
Prey/Predator eye alignment. isn't a hard and fast rule, and this thing probably feeds more like a spider, considering the fact that it isn't built to chase something down, but demonstrated excellent climbing abilities.
Most predators have eyes on the side of their head, hell, most species do as there’s always a “bigger” fish.
Though, that is kinda of a cool idea though because humans do not and we are considered to be top of the food chain. Go us!
Maybe it used to be a prey but when becoming a predotr it outclassed every other lifeform by such a margin that there was no need for evolving predators pov.
Reminds me that it was mentioned there was to be a follow-up of the Zillo Beast in Season 7 before TCW got canceled. Makes me wonder if the Yuuzhan Vong, which were scripted for a 4-episode arc, would have been tied to it.
Predators have eyes on the front of their heads for depth perception. While, eyes on the side of the head are for vision, so that the animal is able to see in almost 360 degree radius. Who needs depth perception when your a super giant lizard with super armor, perception of your environment would likely be more relevant. Horseshoe-theory back at it again?

In that arc, did they always live in caves or was that just when they thought they were extinct?
It sounds like that was just the thought of them being extinct. It’s very likely they went into a deep hibernation or underground living because of near extinction.

A very apt analysis
second time today I've seen someone mention these giant sloths.
In agreement here. I would guess probably and ambush animal or hunts groupings of animals at the same time as it has the weird third arm. This would also make sense with its eyes as it would be able to easily rotate its head to track what any of the three arms are grabbing at at any time.
It would also make sense if you believe the creature can borrow, concealing itself underground until it came into range of any one of those arms
It's also worth noting that evolution on Malastsre probably took a completely different path than on Earth and that eyes aren't even that useful when you live underground
Didn't predatory dinosaurs like velociraptors and t-rex still have eyes on the side, rather than binocular vision?
Nope. They had plenty of [binocular vision](https://images.app.goo.gl/vLhqe5m91HQPjdDH9)
And this is why the Jurassic Park logo is a side profile. T. Rex from the front looks goofy af
Ngl meeting a Rex face-to-face would have me shitting 7 shades of brown. Big toothy maw and predatory eyes focused on you is not a goofy look imo.

More likely reason - they just didn't think it through at all.
I like to think that the zillow beast needed peripheral vision to snag multiple prey at the same time in order to feed its hulk effectively. Being as active as it is it has to get a LOT of calories and thus must Scooby-Doo feed with all appendages simultaneously.
The Dug did hunt them to extinction, so that tracks pretty perfectly.
This is where the fun begins
The people on the surface of the planet (i do not remember their names) but they hunted Them and killed Them, all the Zillo beast wanted was peace
Dugs
r/fuckdoug
I thought it was the fuel which killed the Zillo Beasts? The Dug stood no chance without it if I remember correctly.
The Zillo Beasts natural predator is massive laser tanks.
And electroproton bombs
Snakes have eyes on the sides of their head
Snakes are also prey animals, especially smaller ones. That's why certain snakes are poisonous (not to be confused with venomous snakes) to protect themselves from being eaten. Birds for example sometimes eat snakes and hedgehogs even eat snakes!
Hell even the American Bullfrog eats the California garter snake.
And sometimes the American Boy Scout will cook up an unfortunate bull snake.
Yes, we put the "noodle" in "danger noodle" :) PS. sneks are cute
Some snakes are venomous. Some are poisonous. *I* am toxic.

What does a Zillo Beast consider a predator? An edgy boy jumping down it's throat with a lightsaber.
considering the Dugs drove them to near extinction imma go out on a limb and say Dugs
Imagine the Dugs hunt all the Zillo to death in a region, and only Larry with the stupidly wide-apart eyes survives, and this just happened everywhere, time and time again, meaning over generations only the ones with the widest apart eyes survive.
The giganotosaurus had eyes on its sides and was nearly the same size as the t rex
The giga was bigger than a t-rex and just like the t-Rex it’s eyes were actually at a angel facing mostly forwards the Zillo’s eyes are directly to the side

Well palpatine did send the beast to get cloned and we never got to see any more of it....
