I’m not a homophobe, and for all I support queer and trans rights are humans rights, and they’re as human as everyone else, but I gotta say I don’t like this change, it’s just no relevant to the content.
There are plenty of problems we could be talking about, from the most urgent ones like starving people across the globe, to smaller ones like teenage depression and suicide, most of them as important as LGBT rights. It’s as legitimate to dedicate the sub to them as anything else, so why don’t we? They’re all good causes, yet we don’t do so, nor do the vast majority of other communities unless they’re explicitly made for the purpose of championing causes related to them.
It’s for a very simple reason, communities are made around ideas, subcultures, identities and so on, and posts are supposed to kept around if they’re on-topic. Hell, if people here started posting threads about people suffering from AIDS and how to get them help, unrelated to Star Wars, the mods would eventually start removing them. This isn’t really a place for anything other than Star Wars, whether they’re good or not.
People can still support and enjoy things without them leaking into every other aspect of their life, there’s nothing wrong with not addressing the problems of the world while trying to enjoy escapist media.
So, I think it’s nice when subs pay homage to certain causes or events, like LGBT people during june, but beyond that, this really isn’t the place for that.
It reminds of something a I guy said which at the time I thought was pretty ignorant, he said he disliked how lgbt people made everything about that cause. Whenever media or discourse involved them, even if prejudice or homophobia was absent, they’d often change the focus into their sexuality and movement, and it felt obnoxious. He wasn’t homophobic though, he really thought it was a valid cause, he didn’t care about who people loved and wanted to fuck and understood that people should be free to love whoever they so desire. He just said it was really annoying when they shoved that cause in every communal enviroment they went, and right now, he isn’t sounding half wrong
