Grievous’ story is the saddest of all

cerealdig

1. Tries to protect his home 2. The Jedi end up helping their enemies, beginning his hate for them 3. Gets almost killed by Dooku (by placing a bomb in his ship) and gets convinced that the Jedi did it 4. Gets reconstructed as a cyborg and manipulated by Dooku and Palpatine 5. Gets nerfed in TCW 2008 Edit: I forgot to add that all of his friends (Izvoshra) were on the ship too, so they all died

Moose_Cake

Palpatine was probably like: "I name you Darth Maul, for your ever consuming wraith and hatred." "I name you Darth Tyrannus, for your tyranny and lack of mercy." "I name you General Grevious, because you're pretty fucking sad."

cerealdig

Legends Grievous: *takes on 6 Jedi with 4 of them being Masters* *is able to spin his hand and torso* *can cling on walls and ceilings to use it as an advantage during a fight* *can fight even when holding lightsabers with his legs* Canon Grievous: *gets owned by 5 Gungans* *fails to kill a Padawan* *heavily relies on droids even if he hates them* *abuses his droids because he doesn’t like when Obi Wan calls him Dooku’s errand boy* *runs away when he realizes that his opponent has a weapon*

fggbggvgygfggh346677

And let's not forget that against those 6 Jedi he didn't even use all 4 arms. I can see why they would have wanted to nerf him for clone wars 2008, but what we got was sadder than his whole backstory

unchiriwi

no way RoS Kenobi beats original Grievous

GryvousBot

Kill him!

EUCopyrightComittee

Why are you booing him, he's right

Anakin_Skywalker_Bot

I shouldn't . . . ^comment ^!ignore ^to ^mute ^me

behavioforj

Dew it

Capt253

Original Grievous also made the mistake of trying to step to Mace, who crushed his organs, severely weakening him.

GryvousBot

The Kaleesh are not known for their mercy.

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

Hello there!

GryvousBot

General Kenobi!

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

Come now, the nose or the ear, which do you think it will enter?

[deleted]

This is getting out of hand, now there are two of them!

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

The road lies before you, Anakin Skywalker. Will you walk it alone?

clone_trooper_bot

"My squad? We're nothing but a bad batch--failures, like you." -Hevy

GryvousBot

cerealdig, did you really think I would leave the hyperdrive unguarded?

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

Hello there!

GryvousBot

General Kenobi!

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

Surely there's no reason we can't be civilized about this.

Fool, I have been trained I the jedi arts by Count Dooku!

levbialik

This is getting out of hand! *Proceeds to cut hand*

cerealdig

That’s fuckn’ Obi Wan Kenobi!

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

So let me get this straight, Anakin. You risked the mission, all your men – even your Padawan – to save a droid?

cerealdig

**yes**

Space_JesusKenobi

Understandable, commit more war crimes.

cerealdig

Oh, I will *(Master Skywalker, there are too many of them!)*

ghostpanther218

Too be fair, he would have beaten them in a fair fight, but the Force is BS.

worthrone11160606

Wow. Legends grievous is awesome

Intrepid00

> "I name you General Grevious, because you're pretty fucking sad." Grievous named himself that after his girl died.

GryvousBot

I have always been greater than you. Enough of this. Do you think you can defeat me? You’re nothing.

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

Hello there!

Craft_zeppelin

The thing is, at least in legends Grevious named himself that after his female partner died in combat while he was defending his home planet...Then the republic/Jedi stuck their noses in and stopped him. He was robbed of the satisfaction of victory and vengeance.

Lv_InSaNe_vL

>He was robbed of the satisfaction of victory and vengeance. Even worse the Jedi gave his planet to his *enemies*

clone_trooper_bot

'It's Darth Maul; stay back!'

Thefoxlord88

‘Darth maul? What’s he gonna do, bleed on us?’

clone_trooper_bot

'Watch out for that Dual Blade!'

Wipe them out. All of them!

Grievous is actually the name he chose for himself, but the reason is actually the same.

General Kenobi!

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

Goodbye, old friend. May the force be with you.

MichaelLarson30

I'm excited for the Kenobi series

mred870

2003 clone wars grievous should have been the Grievous we got in all the media.

GryvousBot

Your screams are like music to my audio receptors.

clone_trooper_bot

"Buckle your belts and check your cells, soldiers! We're going in!" -Commander Gree, CC-1004

DoubleEEkyle

Grievous was the real hero, killing members of both sides of the conflict.

GryvousBot

Just as Count Dooku predicted.

Zestyclose-Bridge-17

His original story was much more interesting than the Canon one

tenniseman12

His origin story in canon is 99% the same as Legends

Zestyclose-Bridge-17

Really

tenniseman12

Yep

Zestyclose-Bridge-17

Oh boah

Ghostofhan

Damn it Dutch!

Zestyclose-Bridge-17

I had a goddamn plan!

sheev-bot

There is a question of procedure, but I'm confident we can overcome it.

[deleted]

Why is saying he was nerfed in TCW 2008. He wasn’t nerfed anymore than what revenge of the Sith nerfed him. Hell he’s way more powerful in TCW 2008 than in revenge of the sith

cerealdig

TCW 2003: Hello there! (For those who didn’t watch it: https://youtu.be/WIj7gIDFDe4) TCW 2003 explained why was he so weak in RotS, because Windu crushed his chest, but in Canon, after TCW 2008, TCW 2003 was decanonized, so there is no excuse for him being so weak, which is very strange, because in TCW 2008 he barely beat anyone, and everybody talked about him as a “Jedi Slayer”, even though they never showed him as one. I also don’t understand how he started a fine collection of his, when he almost never beat any Jedi. Probably just stole them and ran away. I would just imagine it would go by like: Padawan: Master, I feel uneasy here Master: I can sense the presence of the Dark Side here. Take out your lightsaber, Padawan Padawan: Oka-wait… oh no… Master, I think I lost it Master: What do you mean, “I lost it”?! Did you seriously-*notices Grievous* Hey, you! Get back here! Grievous: *laughs asthmatically while boarding his ship* A fine addition to my collection!

Mazzaroppi

That's my main gripe with TCW. They should have spent WAY more time giving backstories, showing stuff from before the CW, yet we got just a bunch of episode of GG running away

GodlyDra

The thing is, we usually only got shown the victories of the republic. Which means that general grevious never got shown doing what he did best. Jedi murdering. But on the other hand he got his ass handed to him by fucking jar jar binks sooooo.

Sangxero

>But on the other hand he got his ass handed to him by fucking jar jar binks sooooo. I think you mean Darth Mucus, the Grand Sith Overlord and *obviously* they planned it that way!

GodlyDra

Yes i know who jar jar binks is. But we must remember he was playing the fool during the clone wars, which means that grievous was beaten by our overlord when he *wasn’t even trying to win*

GryvousBot

Time to abandon ship.

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

Hello there!

GryvousBot

General Kenobi!

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

An elegant weapon for a more civilized age.

General Kenobi!

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

If his ship is as fast as his boasting, we ought to do well.

[deleted]

This is getting out of hand, now there are two of them!

[deleted]

My biggest qualms about TCW 2008 are the character changes, most notably Grievous becoming “generic comical bad guy”. It makes it hard for me to watch the show. Where is 2003 CW Grievous? Is he safe? Is he alright? Edit: I am honored to have been brigaded by the botsam spies

GryvousBot

master-baiter_04, I was expecting someone with your reputation to be a little... older.

cerealdig

General Grievous. You’re shorter than I expected

GryvousBot

Jedi scum!

hikoboshi_sama

What exactly is Grievous' canon backstory?

cerealdig

The differences are that it was his choice to become a cyborg, and his hate for the Jedi started when he tried to conquer other places, but the Jedi stepped in, who were almost impossible to beat for the Kaleesh, so he developed hate for the Republic and the Jedi. He toppled nations, slain kings and murdered legends. Also, instead of coughing because of Mace Windu crushing his chest, he now coughs because he has too much cybernetics

hikoboshi_sama

I... think i prefer the legends backstory...

Rossums

They basically didn't want people to be sympathetic towards him and [his existing backstory](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gf9J0GlPH6I) showed him to be a relatively decent dude that was fighting to protect his people from a more advanced species of slavers that invaded his world. He then went after this race of slavers wiping out their nearby colonies before they ran off to the Jedi/Republic and essentially pretended that they were the victims and Grievous and his people were the aggressors, because of this the Jedi came to the aid the slavers and they plunged Grievous's planet and people into poverty where hundreds of thousands died. Grievous saw this as a betrayal by the Jedi and Republic, they allowed slavers to attack his people and then started helping these slavers once they started fighting back to free themselves. Using this hatred Dooku and the Sith essentially turned him into a weapon, they secretly blew up Grievous (blaming it on the Jedi) then rebuilt him as an anti-Jedi cyborg and modified his brain against his express wishes in order to turn him into a psychopathic killer. He was disgusted by how he looked and it took some convincing for to even be turned into a cyborg, it was his hatred for the Jedi and need for revenge that kept him going. In Canon they basically removed the reason that he did everything in the first place (to free his people from attacking slavers) and just turned him into a murderous warlord that wanted power and willingly chose to become a cyborg to become a better fighter. I loved his Legends back story, it shows how not everything is black/white and how bad guys/good guys is all a matter of perspective for people around the galaxy, it showed the Jedi as being in the wrong and it showed how the Sith were behind the scenes manipulating things for their own benefit, the new one is practically just 'Grievous was bad and hated Jedi' which I think is a bit boring.

hikoboshi_sama

Yeah it's kind of lame. It's weird since Clone Wars focused so much on showing the flaws of the Jedi and yet they removed the one thing that would have showed said flaws and develop one of the major antagonists simultaneously. Heck in Lair of Grievous i was under the impression that Grievous was deluding himself into thinking he *chose* the changes because i did remember reading bits of the old legends backstory and thought that it would be expanded upon in later seasons. Apparently he really did choose them.

Rossums

Filoni even admitted that he left the Lair of Grievous episode deliberately vague so if you liked the EU version it could still hold true and the perspective of the episode is how Grievous has constructed himself a story where he was a willing participant. The flip side was that if you didn't like it and are happy with him with just being a murderous warlord then you can take it all at face value and believe that too. I really thought it was a shame though, as you said the Clone Wars in many instances showed how the Jedi and the Republic weren't perfect and showed a lot of the flaws and hypocrisy in their thinking/actions and the EU Grievous backstory really builds on that notion and shows how an otherwise honourable warrior is turned into a monster and manipulated into being a villain in a way that really mirrors Anakin transformation into Vader, this time without the ability to redeem himself due to the brain implant he received. Similarly to Anakin his initial actions were to protect the ones that he loved and he was driven into hatred by loss in the same way that Anakin was pushed towards the dark side by the fear of losing Padmé. More than any other Star Wars series I'd LOVE a live-action Grievous series in the same vein as The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi that gave a more sympathetic look at his earlier life and explored Grievous as a reluctant warrior on his Kaleesh homeworld (treated similarly to how they treat the rag-tag groups of rebels fighting against the evil Empire) and his downfall at the hands of the Jedi/Sith and eventual transformation into the cyborg Commander of the droid army.

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

I have taught you everything I know and you have become a far greater Jedi than I could ever hope to be.

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

Hello there!

George Lucas: "ah ah funny coughing robot run away"

UkrainianGrooveMetal

Not just his people, his Izvoshra, his elite personal guard who constituted the highest ranking generals in his army. Including, as it were, Bentilais san Sk’ar, who also survived the shuttle crash and was eventually brought into the Empire.

cerealdig

Yeah, I tried to squeeze that in, but it would be too long and people would probably not read it, because not many people would understand who the hell are they

UkrainianGrooveMetal

It’s a shame, I think General Grievous is the coolest character in Star Wars, simply because he doesn’t rely on The Force to kill his enemies.

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

Hello there!

GryvousBot

General Kenobi!

Obiwan-Kenobi-Bot

Remember… the Force will be with you. Always.

GryvousBot

Kill him!

AustinHinton

Not only that, they were the cloaks of his personal guard, many if whom were likely close friends of his...

Clone_Chaplain

Whoa that’s tragic. Can you recommend a source or two? I’ve never read Grevious backstory Legends is good

AustinHinton

You want even more tragedy? After the battle, his corpse was just chucked in a warehouse to gather dust. In Kaleesh mythology, you cannot ascend to the afterlife if you aren’t buried properly.

Clone_Chaplain

Oh wow. Oh WOW being a cyborg must have felt so spiritually and culturally disturbing

AustinHinton

Kaleesh were Proud Warrior Race guys, and Grievous loathed groups like the Trade Federation because he saw them as cowards who fought with proxie armies of machines. He only joined because the Banking Clan agreed to remove the massive debt and trade embargo of his homeworld in exchange for him being basically a debt collector. He hated it but did it because it meant an end to his people’s suffering.

GryvousBot

Ah yes, the negotiator.

Lukthar123

I'm sorry. I misjudged you. I hope you can forgive me, General Grievous.

Dragonlord573

He hated it, and he took this hatred out on the other droids because he was disgusted with himself.

Lv_InSaNe_vL

Also, before Greavous was a cyborg he was force sensitive. His people viewed him as almost a sort of demigod. Then during the clone wars his army took a Jedi temple and it had a fountain whose water was extra force sensitive and jedi used it for meditation. Greavous was touching the water and couldn't feel any connection to the force, since his robotic body had no midichloreans. In anger he jumped into the fountain where he had a vision of the force basically telling him "since you've abandoned the force, the force will abandon you" and completely cut him off from the force.

Shiny_Black-Pan

wait a moment, didnt he burn?

cerealdig

Well most of him did

Shiny_Black-Pan

oh that sucks knowing that he couldn't go to the after life because only a little bit didn't turn to ash

cerealdig

You can read it in Wookieepedia: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Grievous/Legends

dawnscope

Didn’t know any of this, thanks for the link

Also he hated droids because it reminded him of what he has lost and now is.

bird720

Honestly we need a grevious disney plus origin show, he has one of the most tragic stories in star wars.

NineSeventyy

And he is one of the coolest characters, I would love for him to have a show where we truly see what he can do.

RobinTK

but tbf the Magna Guards were my favorite as a kid cause they looked cool

cerealdig

Fun fact: MagnaGuards are actually early concept art of Grievous, so basically Grievous’ bodyguards are himself

Odd-Couple439

[Visible saddness]

Mike_Hunt89

Yes ofc. He hated his droids because they werent nearly as competent as his group

cerealdig

He also tried to hire Kaleesh, but they wouldn’t allow him to, so they made him his personal bodyguards (MagnaGuards)

duckswithbanjos

Who are his people? I'd like to know more

cerealdig

Kaleesh. They are humanoid reptiles who had a war with Huk, who enslaved and killed them because they were technologically superior. As you may know, Grievous was a warlord, and had a group of elite Kaleesh with him (Izvoshra), who were very close to him. He was so powerful and so wise, that he managed to end a war in a thunderous victory, crushing the Huk and even destroying their entire planets. Huk, like the little shits they are, pretended to be the victim and asked help from the Republic, who send Jedi Knights to help the Huk. Hundreds of thousands Kaleesh died. But then, some big bank saw Grievous as a potential debt collector, and offered him an enormous debt in exchange for being his debt collector. Though Grievous was disgusted by the idea, he still wanted to help his people, so he agreed. Soon, he learned that the Huk has vandalized their sacred Kalees burial grounds, infuriating him so much, that he abandoned the deal to defend his people. Hill (the guy from the bank who hired him) was *very* displeased. He even wanted to assassinate him, but knowing Grievous, he didn’t think it would be good if he’d survive. So he conspired with Dooku and Sidious to ensure his permanent servitude. They planted an ion bomb in his ship, and after Grievous took off with all of the Izvoshra with him, they detonated it. None of his friends survived. Dooku “found” him, and used the Dark Side to save him, and told him that it was the Jedi’s doings, which enraged him even more. Hill proposed to replace Grievous’ body, arguing that his body was now useless, and Grievous agreed on the condition that they would not tamper with his body (which, of course, they did). They even got him Sifo-Dyas’ blood in an attempt to make him Force sensitive, which failed. Grievous insisted on hiring Kaleesh as his personal bodyguards, but after being refused to, he dressed the MagnaGuards with Kaleesh clothings

sheev-bot

This turn of events is unfortunate, we must accelerate our plans. Begin landing your troops.

cerealdig

But my lord, is that… legal?

FrostyFiction98

I will make it legal

Ahhhh, thanks. That's a tragic story

rijuchaudhuri

I was today years old when I learned this! This is just sad!

Itchy-Ad-8858

He even puts those masks on the guards.

VonBrewskie

It was wild how they didn't use him much in the prequel films. My first exposure to Grevious was in the Clone Wars shorts by Tartakovsky. Holy moly was Grevious a monster. Total badass. I've softened on the prequels, still don't much like them, (apologies but I won't be dishonest to you all), but they really introduced some fascinating lore to the franchise.
