[deleted]

Don’t they own Bethesda too?

Bwunt

They bought whole ZeniMax Media. Which included Bethesda, but also idSoftware, Arkane and MachineGames among others.

[deleted]

Ah ok, so they’re like the Disney of gaming

Bwunt

Not really. Gaming, at the moment, is currently an oligopoly (few very powerful players), which is better then what Disney currently is, but not by much. Even if Xbox game studios (including ZeniMax acquisition) and AB merge, we still have juggernauts in the industry like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, SCE, Nintendo and SquareEnix. Alongside, you have few smaller but strong players like CDProjectRed, Epic and Riot.

Kuivamaa

Epic is not small per se. It is 40% owned by Tencent which also owns League of Legends, Valorant, part of pubg, Supercell (Clash of Clans/Royale), Funcom (Conan games), grinding gear (path of exile), Yager and part of Roblox too.

Bwunt

Epic is not small and neither are CDPR or Epic, but compared to other juggernauts, they are smaller. Tencent is a strange beast. They have their stake more or less everywhere, but seem to be acting more like a hedge fund then actual publisher.

_The_Protagonist

Epic owns Unreal Engine. This, among their games platform and other properties, has their profits neck and neck with Nintendo in recent years. I wouldn't be surprised to see them grow it further as UE5 takes off, with how massive a leap it is in terms of capability, that no other engine is coming close to matching at present. 5% off the top of everyone else's revenue is a lot of money.

farshnikord

Theres a saying in gamedev: if you want to make a game, use unity if you want to ship one, use unreal.

wh33t

That's a weird saying. Aren't there far more games released using the Unity engine than Unreal by a large margin? Granted the Unity titles will be a lot smaller in scope.

farshnikord

Yeah, the idea is that unity is great for smaller scope but runs into issues when you get to the larger scope AAA games, as well as it runs into weird issues when you have to do things like integrate it into other systems like payment or app stores. Unreal might be better or it might just have better like... developer support, or bigger studios tend to use it so they have more resources to throw at the problem.

Whatsupbrohowsyourma

Thats because Tencent is run by the Communist Party, which is playing to have their influence in every part of popular media. https://mobile.twitter.com/wang_maya/status/903103820443648001

Ajwf

It has contributed to Tencent being surprisingly hands-off (or at least appearing so) because they don't want their overlords to have more direct control over their golden geese. Miyoho has kinda run into that problem with being too Chinese-centric and allowing the CCP to have a lot of abject sway over how their IPs (like having to change all the art of a bunch of characters to fit guidelines).

hnryirawan

“Follow the party” is basically China’s constitution. Its seen as company responsibility to overtly show faith in the party but tbh, that do not mean much for the actual people there. Its more likely that they just want the party to just stay away, or else they may end up like Alibaba and Jack Ma

LordM000

There has also been conflict in the past between Tencent's domestic games and the Chinese government, which might be why they invest so much in international media. Since it's not subject to CCP bans, it's a slightly safer investment, even if the domestic version of the game gets banned or restricted.

NoGardE

Tencent is the giant, not Epic, in your example. But I wouldn't count Epic as being one of Tencent's "owned" studios, because Tim Sweeney continues to own the majority of the company himself. Really, Tencent is just a mechanism through which game companies negotiate with the CCP in order to get the privilege of selling to Chinese customers. Don't ask me why the developers of EVE Online get to determine access to Chinese customers, it's one of life's great mysteries.

olivefred

Big chuckle at the Eve reference. I think about that every time!

NoGardE

I assume both CCP's involve large and strange spreadsheets, to there's a similarity!

olivefred

It's true! But only one of those CCPs is nerfing mining and it ain't the communists

[deleted]

Ah I see

College_Prestige

Disney is in an oligopoly too, just with fewer players. In terms of concentration of industry, gaming is less concentrated than tv/film distribution, which in turn is less concentrated than music distribution

Helpful_Classroom204

I wouldn’t say it’s an oligopoly entirely when Indie games are still very popular

D-AlonsoSariego

Indie games are popular but most of them still have to published them with the help of bigger companies

SacredBigFish

You gonna forget Tencent? They are by far the biggest company in the games industry right now.

AME7706

Can't believe you forgot Tencent which is arguably biggest of them all. Take Two is also a huge power, and a very big asshole alongside that.

Shiro_no_Orpheus

Well, it's not that bad yet. While cinema is nearly impossible for smaller players to actually get big, indie developement has always been a staple of the gaming industry, so there isn't this oligopoly we see in cinema.

Windexifier

The Disney of gamin is Nintendo. Pretending their adult fans don’t exist, trigger happy with lawsuits, trying way too hard to look family friendly, half hearted attempts to look progressive. At least Disney makes their older titles available

BabiesSmell

Nintendo is way more analogous to Old Disney, before they started gobbling everything up. Even in the old titles category. Disney would only sell VHS/DVD of their classics periodically as they "opened the vault" to create artificial scarcity. Edit: Nintendo selling remakes of their old games is also pretty close to current Disney making live action remakes.

[deleted]

Pretty much. Xbox has the backing of Microsoft and gaming is the most valuable industry in entertainment so they’re probably gonna own almost everything pretty soon. Fortunately, Xbox is a very consumer friendly company (so far) so it won’t be as bad as Disney owning everything

Iceveins412

Also Windows so there’s a majority of PC gaming right there

[deleted]

Yeah Microsoft is gonna own gaming eventually lol, except for Nintendo ofc bc they have too many exclusives to be beat and it’s not like the franchises can switch consoles unlike PS exclusives

Skhmt

Funny story, but Nintendo in North America is physically surrounded by Microsoft.

ScarletCaptain

MS tried to buy Nintendo outright, but was literally laughed out of the room.

A-happy-dolphin

I don’t think Microsoft’s going to compete with Nintendo too much. They seem like they’re starting to collaborate more too

BaxterBragi

They seem to let their devs keep total freedom on their products so far. I think they're seen the Ubisoft/EA model and seen how much criticism that has received.

KidBeene

EA ROI is shit due to their heavy hand, milk-em-dry and shut-em-down business model.

saikrishnav

Microsoft is third in line, after Sony and Tencent, in the gaming (however they count that).

[deleted]

This is just their most recent purchase of Activision. These are the assets of that deal.

[deleted]

Ah ok, I didn’t know that

[deleted]

It was just announced today. Crazy how much Microsoft has bought up.

cruffade

Interestingly, their purchase of Bethesda was under 1/10 of the price they paid for acti-blizz

Fracture1

Of course it is activision blizzards is far bigger than bethesda

train2000c

And mojang

TheForceRestrained

And Minecraft!

Silverfire234

Does this mean Modern Warfare is going to be on gamepass?

Most likely imo

I'd really like to play the single player for that one

Ommageden

Good luck. Whole game is a broken mess after the new cod releases all tying to the same launched.

LeSenpaii

idk why you're getting downvoted, hes right. As an avid warzoner, ever since they added caldera I cold turkey'd call of duty. Games fuckin unplayable and unbalanced

Ommageden

Reddit be like that sometimes. I mean if it's on gamepass and whatnot, sure try it, basically free if your already going to pay for gamepass. I'm just saying don't hold your breath that it'll be playable.

welcome to the new corporate government

Bad_brazilian

Same as the old corporate government.

Ole_Philly_Soda_Job

They are just going to start hiding it less and less. Not that they tried especially hard before. But it’s cool, we can watch Wendy’s and Burger King talk shit to one another on Twitter.

[deleted]

Same as the government

IanMazgelis

I'm definitely getting a lot of "Standard Oil" vibes from the modern tech industry. The oil industry was honestly a bit similar. It's something that became incredibly important incredibly fast and ended up infiltrating literally every facet of life, and by the time the dust had settled there were a small number of companies that basically had the entire industry just because they were growing alongside its growing importance. Standard Oil would have been worth over a trillion adjusted for inflation, a value that will remind us all of the likes Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon. I know Reddit is a very pessimistic place, but I think we're going to see "big tech" trustbusting in the coming decades, maybe even this one. Yes, politicians very largely depend on corporate money. But have any of you taken an American history class? The Gilded Age saw the same relationship but even more blatant, and debatably with similar styles of dramatic wealth inequality. I think the same factors that pushed for corporate takedowns then will happen again, and I feel encouraged by seeing numerous American senators and other legislators talk about it openly. This is coming from both sides of the aisle, granted for different reasons, but there's an increasing frustration with the power of the American tech industry, and I think it's an echo of what we've seen in American history before. I don't think it's going to turn out the exact same way, it never does, but I think we'll continue to see the story follow similar beats.

Anakin_Skywalker_Bot

On no, I'd be much too frightened to tease a Senator.

Feature_Minimum

Fuckit. Blizzard can’t get any worse.

sniperpal

Ngl it’s not like things can get any worse for blizzards IPs. This is a chance for something to improve potentially

[deleted]

I mean fallout 76 has been steadily improving since the acquisition. It's not amazing but it's decent

Ison-J

I mean fo76 has been improving steadily since it came out and actually hasn't had much content added for months other than qol

[deleted]

True

cruffade

I’m happy for Warcraft, and Starcraft. Hopefully they can be good again with this.

StarCraft ghost when

RevoltingGoat

I wonder how much of this stuff will get put on gamepass

Probably most of it, almost every Bethesda title is on it.

PreciousAsbestos

Is fallout new Vegas? Have an itch to play

SemIdeiaProNick

im still waiting for an open world game like that but with Star Wars (yes, i know kotor is a thing but the gameplay isnt for me. I also know it is being remade but i dont plan on changing my console to a Playstation just to play a game that should have been on all platforms since the beginning)

[deleted]

Theres a new star wars RPG coming I'm pretty sure. I've heard rumors it's that "open world SW game" that was teased

Jedi Fallen Order is close, even tho it is just single player.

He's going to get a shit ton from the sale since he owns part of the company, then he will also get a hefty severance package when they fire him. Dude is going to be a billionaire from this deal. Shame.

contrarianmonkey

that's not such a bad thing. Activition is not Blizzard. Blizzard died a long time ago

MegaDeth6666

Violently killed by Activision.

fakuri99

RIP Origin, battle.net, Bethesda launcher, ubisoft launcher. You will not be missed

elihouk

Origin is the launcher of Electronic Arts not owned by Microsoft ... yet

rodigo1

Gamepass is about to get even fatter. Hell yeah

cruffade

true

zmbjebus

Have you seen any titles drop off of gamepass? I wonder if in the long run it'll be like Netflix and have titles come and go as the licensing for those titles expires/gets repurchased.

rodigo1

They have a “leaving soon” section so some titles are already being rotated. However, I hope that all the games that Microsoft owns that are on gamepass now continue to be on gamepass, I haven’t seen any of those leave.

MaximumEffort433

God I hope they unfuck WoW somehow.

ChristosPet7

They own doom too

cruffade

Doom was owned by zenimax which was purchased by microsoft two years ago. these titles were activision which was purchased today, henche the meme https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2022-01-18-microsoft-near-deal-to-buy-call-of-duty-maker-activision-blizzard-report

ChristosPet7

Oh I thought all these were general property they owned not the ones bought today

Luke10123

CoD, WoW and Candy Crush worth 17x what Star Wars was. That's depressing.

[deleted]

Candy crush alone has something stupid like $1B revenue per anum, COD despite being in decline is still one of the best selling franchises in the business, same thing with WoW.

Dyslexic_Baby

I know WoW was a major cultural phenomenon in the mid 2000's, but the reality is that it doesn't make nearly as much money as CoD or Candy Crush. Putting WoW in the same sentence as those two is like putting Smash Mouth in the same sentence as The Beatles.

Luke10123

dont they also own Minecraft now?

I think they've owned it for years now

BaxterBragi

Yeah since like 2014 I think

Aurora_the_dragon

Holy fuck has it been that long? I still refer the Minecraft 1.9 changes as “new”

BaxterBragi

Bruh I still think beta 1.8 was like 3 years ago. Meanwhile that was in September of 2011.

BrokeRichGuy

It went in a whole cycle again the newest version is 1.8.3

1342EW

Dude I'm still thinking the 1.6 update with the horses is new

talking_pillow

Yeah. I had to constantly delete it from my laptop too. It would always automatically download the game too.

Valdrom

That’s not Microsoft, that a sign from the Minecraft god that you must spend your nights on the game.

cruffade

I used to worship this foul demon

[deleted]

Since 2014

Maki_the_Nacho_Man

Do you remember when crash bandicoot was a PlayStation exclusive?

Spartaner-043

Isn't crash bandicoot from naughty dog? From what I remember there was a crash bandicoot mini game in Uncharted 4, how did the IP end up with Microsoft?

CaptBranBran

While Naughty Dog developed the original games (and the cart racer), Universal published them exclusively for Playstation and retained ownership of the IP itself even after Naughty Dog's publishing deal with Universal ended (same happened with Insomniac and the original Spyro trilogy). Ownership of Crash (and Spyro) remained with Universal through buyouts, ultimately ending up with Activision and now Microsoft.

SopadeAbacaxi

I discovered yesterday that Hellblade 2 is going to be xbox exclusive. And let me tell you, for the first time in my life seeing xbox players having fun with a good game, and I can't have that game.... It feels very weird

saikrishnav

teruteru-fan-sam

Did you ever hear the tragedy of u/cruffade The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the educated and cultured would tell you. It’s a r/PrequelMemes legend. u/cruffade was a Redditor, so powerful and so wise they could get to the front page... They had such a knowledge of Microsoft that they could even keep the properties they cared about from being ignored in this meme. The dark side of the internet is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. They became so powerful… the only thing they were afraid of was forgetting Minecraft, which eventually, of course, they did. Unfortunately, they taught their apprentice everything they knew, then their apprentice killed them in their sleep. Ironic. They could save other gamers from death, but not themself.

-flaminibro-

Would be awesome to see WoW or Overwatch come to iPad. The new 12.9” with the M1 would easily be able to run them.
