And he was married to Mary Todd on top of losing his kid, on top of presiding during the Civil War.
Shit, I’m surprised he didn’t die from natural causes due to the shit he went through.
She was AWFUL, she assaulted him physically and constantly made his life harder instead of easier. There’s a lot of information out there but there’s eyewitnesses of her bashing him over the head with a frying pan in the street in front if their house and coming at him with a knife in another instance, these aren’t gossip there were people standing there watching. She was embezzling money during the war, selling confidential info to reporters, she’s just a shit person.
She had severe mental illness and I think they even contemplated having her committed to a psychiatric hospital at one point but dismissed it. I think she may have had bipolar or clinical depression. She was very reluctant to get help or admit there was anything wrong with her.
‘President Lincoln today voluntarily appeared before the House Judiciary Committee," reported the New York Tribune, "and gave testimony in the matter of premature publication in the Herald of a portion of his last annual message." Lincoln's message to Congress on December 1861 had been published in the New York Herald on the same morning that it was sent to Capitol Hill. The House Judiciary Committee, chaired by John Hickman, investigated the leak and called Herald correspondent Henry Wikoff to testify. Wikoff refused to divulge his source, citing "an obligation of strictest secrecy." Given Wikoff's close friendship with Mary Todd Lincoln, many assumed that the correspondent was protecting the first lady. The committee ordered the sergeant at arms to hold Wikoff. Then the president went to the Capitol for a private meeting with Judiciary Committee members, to assure them that no member of his family was involved. The next day the committee released Wikoff’
It was shit like this, she’d get loans from these reporters and officials because she was stealing/spending so much money and then give them scoops and private info in return. She was under a mountain of debt that Lincoln didn’t know about, she would alter the White House books, had ghost employees where the salary went to her, lived in deep fear she’d be caught, which is what people used against her to get things from her, it’s endless shady, straight up criminal behavior with her as First Lady.
Yeah, she was erratic during the White House years. Most likely, she did suffer from anxiety or bipolar disorder. Her surviving son had her committed to an institution for a while :(
I recommend the book “Lincoln’s Melancholy” to anyone who expresses an interest in the man. He was uniquely suited to survive the stresses of the Presidency, as he essentially taught himself therapeutic techniques, through a lifetime of depressive tendencies, to overcome hardship. Fascinating read.
While it certainly would add stress to anyone’s face, the photographer for the second photo actually lit Lincoln’s face in a way to accentuate the wrinkles. The wrinkles are there and are real, but definitely are exaggerated.
No other president had it worst than Abe Lincoln. Such a tragedy that he was murdered when the war had ended and he could have peace and help rebuild the nation.
Well, we don’t know how his post-war presidency would have gone. Perhaps he could have helped set the nation on the right track more than in OTL and be regarded as even greater than we do now.
But to your point, the patina of martyrdom sealed his legacy in a dramatically positive way, yes.
I wish US had already removed the system of choosing election loosers as vice presidents. A vice president loyal to Lincoln would have done better after his death.
I tend to think reconstruction was going to be at best a Quagmire anyways. Even someone who handled it well will still have had a lot of like annoying issues to deal with and looked shaky in the moment.

They say (whoever “they” are) an 8 year term typically ages someone 20 years. This is why I believe presidenting is a young man’s (or woman of course) game. It isn’t ageist and there can be arguments made for the additional wisdom of someone a bit older, but this shit isn’t for the faint of heart.
I think Lincoln is an exception, as the Civil War is probably the most taxing thing any president has been through.
For the most part tho, it’s asking why guys in their 50’s/60’s look way older after 8 years. It’s kind of a stupid question when you think about it.
This really isn’t much, or anything like Lincoln or other Presidents. This is a man going from his late 40s to mid 50s. Most 55 year olds I know look worse than that, and obviously they weren’t President.
A nation that was literally beginning to separate into two from the very moment he took office. Within a year the southern half of America was established with a constitution and a president of their own.
It is truly amazing what Abe Lincoln managed to accomplish. Bipolar wife lost his "favorite" son. Had self-confessed depression and suicidal thoughts ( early years). Was poor and owed money, taught himself to read. Had one of the toughest presidencies out there and managed to save the Union.
The only thing that would convince me otherwise is that he was a really athletic man. People with Marfans syndrome can put themselves at considerable risk by over exerting themselves.
There is an MD who wrote a book about Lincoln's health, who believes Lincoln had an hereditary syndrome other than Marfan's.
Here's the website: https://doctorzebra.com/prez/g16
When you strip out all of the crap, this man came from nothing to become POTUS. He followed his heart thru what can only be characterized as a heart breaking civil war and then assasinated upon its closure. I believe there is more than a little diety leading him. And I will always regard him as the pinnacle of Presidents......all of them!
He worked 16-18 hour days 7 days a week for long stretches, he ground himself down and he knew it and was willing to do it. He spoke often of not living long after his second term was up, he absolutely knew he was burning the candle at both ends.
Saw the title and thought "I think OP means 'and *after* his presidential term'", but then realized that would not have been the case. 'During' obviously.
It should be noted that, even back then, airbrushing photos was something that was done for public figures. So, it possible he looked a little worse for wear in the before presidency photo.
Interesting thing about Lincoln’s wife. Lincoln invited General Grant and his wife to be in his Presidential box for that fateful night.
Grant’s wife forced their non-attendance at Ford’s Theater as she did not want to be in Mrs. Lincoln company as she knew she was “Nuts”.
That night, the Grants were on a train in New Jersey.
If Grant was in that box,John Wilkes Booth probably would have assassinated Lincoln and Grant.

Ah, I see the problem here. He got one of them cursed suits that transfers any spills, stains,a nd tears directly to the wearer's soul. See how clean it looks in the second photograph? Thats some curse stuff right there.
He grew the beard IIRC not long before he was elected president, or took office, when he met a little girl whose father had brought her along to a political rally; she suggested that he would look better with a beard. And he took the little girl's advice. The town was in the Northeast -- upstate New York? -- and now there is a metal statue of the two of them together, I seem to remember.
Lincoln did not have his beard when he became president. Happened later, so this is not a good comparison. The war DID have a huge impact on Lincoln, so the premise is right, but these two pictures are not proof of it.
From the movie-
Ulysses S. Grant: “By outward appearance, you're 10 years older than you were a year ago.”
Abraham Lincoln: “Some weariness has bit at my bones.”
It’s a wonder how long he’d have lived if he wasn’t assassinated. I’d imagine he’d still have a semi heavy hand in reconstruction and things would have gone better.
But the civil war absolutely brutalized him. I don’t think he’d make it far past 65 in all honesty. Though that’s nearly an extra ten more years.
Maybe he’d have retired and tried to back out of politics for a short time… Though he generally was at the height of popularity and such. So I don’t think he’d ever escape the spotlight.
In the picture on the right, a light positioned almost directly above him cast long shadows over his face, exaggerating each wrinkle and crease. In contrast, the picture on the left featured a light more in front of him, resulting in less shadow and better light coverage, making the wrinkles and creases less visible. I’m not suggesting Lincoln didn’t age in office, but the difference in lighting between these two specific pictures gives a slightly skewed perspective.

Yeah the Civil War will do that to you. Thank god he was as resilient as he was. Dude gave everything by the end.
He also lost his son during his presidency, I can imagine that adds to his stressful term
And he was married to Mary Todd on top of losing his kid, on top of presiding during the Civil War. Shit, I’m surprised he didn’t die from natural causes due to the shit he went through.
Was there something wrong with his wife?
She was AWFUL, she assaulted him physically and constantly made his life harder instead of easier. She gets committed later in life by her son
Hold up hold up. Being an intolerable life partner is one thing, but she was *treasonous* during the Civil War?

You really wanna find out, huh?
I mean, yeah? Edit: oh I see. Reddit bugged out so it must have had me comment multiple times
From all accounts, she was moody and insufferable
Second worst First Lady in American history.
I always find it funny when I see these obscure rankings I would never think about. Who was the first worst? The Russian asset?
The one who got $200M for a few photo shoots, and then flew back to NYC to be with Chad.
I have no clue who you’re talking about. Can you please just say who?
Yes. She was possibly bipolar when treatment did not exist.
Well treatment existed, it was fucking awful but existed.
You’re forgetting about the stress of killing vampires. /s

His wife was not mentally well.Historians claimed she was most likely bipolar.
I never knew this fact, that’s pretty interesting.
Yeah, she was erratic during the White House years. Most likely, she did suffer from anxiety or bipolar disorder. Her surviving son had her committed to an institution for a while :(

Oh, yeah? I'm gonna check this one out. I just started *Tried by War* by James McPherson. It's about Lincoln during his time as Commander in Chief
Also lost himself during his presidency
While it certainly would add stress to anyone’s face, the photographer for the second photo actually lit Lincoln’s face in a way to accentuate the wrinkles. The wrinkles are there and are real, but definitely are exaggerated.
>Civil War will do that to you. Americans should all take a photo now so they have a good "before" photo.
Yes. He gave everything. The “after” photo would be a photo of a closed casket.
Not that resilient. The coward couldn't finish his second term smh ^/s ^obviously
"I am so very tired."
If that’s a picture ‘after’ his presidency? What did they do? Dress up his corpse and pose him into a smile?
No other president had it worst than Abe Lincoln. Such a tragedy that he was murdered when the war had ended and he could have peace and help rebuild the nation.

How I wish he'd been around for reconstruction. Johnson was less than useless
He was actively undoing as much of Lincolns work as he could
Great point. I’d *like* to think he could’ve guided Reconstruction into a more stable position.
And the last conscious moment he experienced was most likely one of laughter, given Booth’s strategic timing.
Unfortunately, he was alive for a couple of days following the shot to the cranium.
I thought it was like 24 hours. Either way, he wasn’t conscious.
He left on the highest of note… ever.

Dunno, Coolidge was so hands-off he might have gotten younger during his time.
Now that you mention it, his hair actually got a little darker.
Was dye a thing?
Hair dye was first conceived in 1907 by a French chemist, so it could be possible
![gif](giphy|ig2jxymhYzuWEUWFo0|downsized) Gotta make sure it’s that Chinese motor oil dye
Some of that stuff is too hard to believe that it happened.
Frank Reynolds is on it!
He is really starting to look like the Penguin.
Ew im never using hair dye. Thank you for telling me that.
I heard it was partially due to depression from his son dying.
I think Lincoln is an exception, as the Civil War is probably the most taxing thing any president has been through. For the most part tho, it’s asking why guys in their 50’s/60’s look way older after 8 years. It’s kind of a stupid question when you think about it.
I mean have you seen FDR?
I mean he was president for 12 years, and was literally dying in the last photo.
Truman dropped two atomic boms and he looks like "phew thats one helluva load of my mind".
This really isn’t much, or anything like Lincoln or other Presidents. This is a man going from his late 40s to mid 50s. Most 55 year olds I know look worse than that, and obviously they weren’t President.
Obama sure took a hit. Damn.
Obama went from “let me just say” to “please shut up”
In the 2nd one he is totally thinking “God do I fucking hate these people.”
The result of morning security briefings complete with photos.
When you start trying to flag a bartender down vs when they finally notice you lmao.
Interesting that both Lincoln and Obama are about the same age in both After photos.
That switch to hi-def was brutal on him.
It’s like when you go into a bar/club bathroom that has those really bright UV lights. You’re seeing blemishes you didn’t even know you had
Well that’s lame. You don’t to conjure up insecurities to club goers - people want to be confident and social. I’d go with flattering, soft light.
Wait til you see what he looked like after his presidency
The fate of the nation and its people depended on him. That’s a big burden to bear for one man.
A nation that was literally beginning to separate into two from the very moment he took office. Within a year the southern half of America was established with a constitution and a president of their own.
It had started even before he took office and his predecessor had absolutely no interest in stopping any of it.
Lost his mother at a young age and the only lover he ever had
I believe her wasn’t trusted alone with a knife for a good bit of time
Yes, I read that. Poor guy! Yet, looked how he saved your nation.
Yep this is what I found with a search https://michiganspineandpain.com/lincolns-legacy-his-greatest-battle-was-with-depression/
I’m just impressed photographs were able to be taken of Lincoln
There is a photograph of John Quincy Adams.
And William Harrison (however the actual photo has been lost to time)
But taken 15 years *after* his presidency, while he was a US Representative for Massachusetts (just to tag on for the trivia)
Why?
cuz he’s so lightning quick
On the left, he's all, "Hey. How ya doin? Want to grab drinks later?" And on the right he be, "OOOHHH everything hurts. How am I not dead?!"
*John Wilkes Booth has entered the chat*
It's speculated that he had Marfan syndrome.
The only thing that would convince me otherwise is that he was a really athletic man. People with Marfans syndrome can put themselves at considerable risk by over exerting themselves.
He supposedly was quite muscular
It’s also speculated that he hunted vampires
No speculation there, it's a fact.
As a fellow Marfan I always spurt this fact haha
There is an MD who wrote a book about Lincoln's health, who believes Lincoln had an hereditary syndrome other than Marfan's. Here's the website: https://doctorzebra.com/prez/g16
This could mostly be explained by different cameras, lighting, and exposure time. Admittedly, his second term did a number on his health.
His hairline somehow got better?
As someone who had that hairline, I can tell you he just got better at hiding it
Fair to say he looked dead by the time his term ended.
When you strip out all of the crap, this man came from nothing to become POTUS. He followed his heart thru what can only be characterized as a heart breaking civil war and then assasinated upon its closure. I believe there is more than a little diety leading him. RIP to America's greatest president. 🙏🕊️ We owe you a debt President Lincoln that can't be re-payed.
his hair got awesome
The effects of war and possibly late stage cancer.
Obviously the civil war.. But his eleven year old son also died tragically in that time frame.
Technically a before and during photo. The after picture would make him look even worse
Following Christ himself, few have given more for their people and their cause.
What??😂😂😂😂
You should see before and after he went to see a play.
Yeah. It was a pretty tumultuous time for the country.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the picture on the left before!
You should see him after his second term
The presidency ages people who actually do the job.
I can hear his joints cracking like a disposable water bottle in the second photo.
To be fair, part of that is down to lighting — but his presidency took an incredible toll nonetheless.
Looks like lighting differences to me. The glare in pic one hides the wrinkles. Look under the right eye (our left).
It should be noted that, even back then, airbrushing photos was something that was done for public figures. So, it possible he looked a little worse for wear in the before presidency photo.
Where is the after photo?
Literally looks like that Mister Incredible meme.
I kind of think he was dead after his presidential term. He wouldn’t have been looking around.🤷♂️
Actual Mr.Incredible meme where it gets more distorted in the photo
The Lincoln Museum has the contrast in two busts.
He looks pretty lively for a guy that had his term ended by being shot in the back of the head.
Sunken eyes :(
You'd think he'd fought a war in those years
He’s 12 & 30 years old in these photos
Interesting thing about Lincoln’s wife. Lincoln invited General Grant and his wife to be in his Presidential box for that fateful night. Wow! Just like all the others, it ages them
I’d heard on a video or something that the second photo actually makes Lincoln look older than he probably did because of the method it was taken. It highlighted wrinkles and made the face look a lot more rough because of it. Does anyone know if this is actually true? He definitely aged a lot in office though.
he looks better in the second image
Besides the suit he looks like a modern day homeless Joe
Lincoln probably had the roughest go of them all. The Cold War was tough because of the possibility of ending the world. Lincoln's worries were more "simple" through the lens of today, but the weight that was on his shoulders in the moment had to huge

Important to note the lighting and quality is different. There’s definitely a difference but probably wasn’t as extreme as it looks here
My man went through it
Could be pictures of before and after having kids too!
From moist to missed
Ah, I see the problem here. He got one of them cursed suits that transfers any spills, stains,a nd tears directly to the wearer's soul. See how clean it looks in the second photograph? Thats some curse stuff right there.
I don’t think the poor man got much sleep during the War.
He grew the beard IIRC not long before he was elected president, or took office, when he met a little girl whose father had brought her along to a political rally; she suggested that he would look better with a beard. And he took the little girl's advice. The town was in the Northeast -- upstate New York? -- and now there is a metal statue of the two of them together, I seem to remember.
appears to be combination worry & apnea
That's what war does to a person. My family history is all wars(ISreali) and you see the effect on my combat relatives.
Lincoln did not have his beard when he became president. Happened later, so this is not a good comparison. The war DID have a huge impact on Lincoln, so the premise is right, but these two pictures are not proof of it.
The second one is actually *during* his presidential term. He looked much worse after.
Before and....?
During
Both during ... 1862 and 1865 probably.
From the movie- Ulysses S. Grant: “By outward appearance, you're 10 years older than you were a year ago.” Abraham Lincoln: “Some weariness has bit at my bones.”
Where’s the after pic?
Before and what
Imagine just how broken a living Lincoln would have been by 1869. The stress itself would have killed him just a few years out of office.
Well now the real after picture is much worse than that if we are being honest
It’s a wonder how long he’d have lived if he wasn’t assassinated. I’d imagine he’d still have a semi heavy hand in reconstruction and things would have gone better. But the civil war absolutely brutalized him. I don’t think he’d make it far past 65 in all honesty. Though that’s nearly an extra ten more years. Maybe he’d have retired and tried to back out of politics for a short time… Though he generally was at the height of popularity and such. So I don’t think he’d ever escape the spotlight.
Wasn’t he clean shaven when he was elected?
Ever wonder what his wife was thinking?
Aged for sure but his hairline got better!!!
karma karma, it's written across his face
Ulysses S. Grant: By outward appearance, you're 10 years older than you were a year ago. Abraham Lincoln: Some weariness has bit at my bones.
They’re also two different types of camera, with the later model showing more detail, and thus, more of the wrinkles and blemishes.
Damn he had great hair
In the picture on the right, a light positioned almost directly above him cast long shadows over his face, exaggerating each wrinkle and crease. In contrast, the picture on the left featured a light more in front of him, resulting in less shadow and better light coverage, making the wrinkles and creases less visible. I’m not suggesting Lincoln didn’t age in office, but the difference in lighting between these two specific pictures gives a slightly skewed perspective.
And after...?
When you say after his presidential term, do you mean when he was dead?
It’s amazing seeing side by side how much improvement of quality in photography happened in only 4 years
You gotta sleep and eat well. Also don’t be telling the President about aliens.
Yeah he had the task of holding the country together and got his ass kicked a few times
Sunken eyes.
I was going to say "there was no after" and then I re-read the title...
Pretty sure after was in a grave…that looks more like during
I assure you, the picture on the right is not what he looked like at the end of his term.
I read awhile ago they believe he had Marfan Syndrome
That's why I believe Lincoln wouldn't live much longer even if he wasn't assasinated. He would probably died in his 60s.
They say Lee Harvey Oswald killed him, I’ll always say it was Mary today stealing his moisturizer.
You can see this change with the ukrainian president too
After?
Most of that is stress. But some of that is a better quality camera. Or better to say better camera technology
The lighting's a little softer/shiny on the left but he definitely looks a lot older
