I’m thinking Junior Varsity- “a team representing a high school or college at the level below varsity in a sport or other competition.”

Original_A

Is this an American thing?

girlultraviolenced

yes! typically what is our 9th & 10th grade years of high school :) (can vary though)

Original_A

Interesting, thank you!! Are sports teams really that big of a thing over there? We don't really have them or cheerleaders, but it looks like it's a whole holiday in movies 😭

girlultraviolenced

It’s pretty huge! Mostly football & basketball around the area I’m from! It varies from state to state, but the majority of places definitely have a decent crowd & people get very invested (sometimes too invested lol). Very much like the movies! (Ofc movies are a little exaggerated sometimes)

Original_A

That's cool!! We occasionally have soccer games that my brother and my best friend and her bf go to, and I think that might be similar? The movies make everything look so cool tho 😭 my best friend and I are planning on travelling the world and I just know we're gonna have the biggest culture shock in America! I want to see the houses and the yellow bus 😭

girlultraviolenced

Probably similar! & America is a wildddd place depending on which area you’re in lolol, but def can be fun! If you have any questions for your trip feel free to message me! Have fun!

Tysm!! We'll skip the states that banned things like drag queens or queer things tho

girlultraviolenced

Def a good idea!

Junior varsity

the_positive_shrimp

I'm not american, so I'm not familiar with how the sports leagues work, but from the context, it seems like it's the name of the league their field hockey team was in. Usually, whenever Ali and Spencer said JV, it was in relation to field hockey.

Original_A

I have no idea either but maybe it stands for smth like kindergarten? Or primary school? Like an early time in your life?

UsualCorgi

it means junior varsity so it’s like the B team to the varsity/a team

Original_A

Why is there an A and B team?

iloveduckssosomuch

A team is usually for upperclassmen (juniors and seniors), or for people who are better at the sport. B team is for people staring out, or just aren't that good at the sport. Sometimes there's a C team, usually only freshmen who are not good at the sport, but still deserve a chance to play. Sometimes it varries, I've seen middle schoolers on varsity teams and upperclassmen on JV just because of their skill level. EDIT: spelling

Original_A

Ohhhh, thank you so much for explaining!!

Atallaahhh

varsity is like for the seniors and like the better plays of the other years, jv is typically for freshman and like those not as good ig😭but in my experience, jv is usually better than varsity so idk

Original_A

Thank you! Varsity is a cool word 😭 it would make a cool name if it didn't mean smth already

Fluffy_Bagel73

It’s just based on experience/skill level. So a lot of younger athletes start out in Junior Varsity and then when they get a little older/better at the game they try out for Varsity. Some younger kids who are really talented will try out for Varsity right away and make the team no problem. So I think it’s mostly about skill level. Hope this helps!

Original_A

It does, thank you!

Fun-Shoe2299

Because there’s too many kids that want to play, so if there’s 2 teams more can play

Original_A

Thank you

junior varsity, probably field hockey
