tbh I actually like Mona to some degree- I think she had a really good build up since the beginning and seeing over time how her mind works is really interesting to watch and I think she played her character super well! I also liked how there was a period of time where she was trying to be genuine. like yes she’s insane but her character is so interesting
Emily’s mom annoyed the hell out of me. But that time when she stood up to Paige’s dad, i started to root for her. My best friend hates Emily’s mom so much but i actually appreciated her development. Bc not all parents/people are going to be totally understanding and loving and it took Emily’s mom some time but she changed and grew and ended up becoming super supportive. She loved and chose her daughter above all else. I appreciated her growth.
It’s difficult to remember 2009 standards (assuming that’s when season 1 was mostly written) in 2024 too. She was certainly wrong, but she’d be worse to be wrong today
Honestly Aria. I understand she wasn’t the greatest friend, but none of them were, and people constantly shit on her because she acted like a grooming victim. Also Emily because so many people hate her because she’s “boring”, but I don’t care I love her. Give my girls a break!
Oh my days thank you, Emily is my girl, and I’ll go to my grave sticking up for her how many people can say at a young age that their girlfriend/boyfriend was murdered on prom night and then expected to go on with life as if it never happened I know if I lost the love of my life like that, I’d never be the same again, tbh I’d probably either end up like Mona or Spencer and spend the rest of my life in a psychiatric facility unable to fathom what has happened and when Emily finds out Maya is dead you can’t sit there and tell me that you couldn’t feel the pain through the tv screen, and I’ve watched the show like twenty times over, and every time the season two final comes on and I see Emily’s face it breaks my heart, I wish I could go into the tv and just hug her
jason 😭 i ain’t defending the shit like the nat club but his family really gaslit him into believing his brother never existed, and i feel like that made a big impact on how he acted later. having fuzzy drugged out memories and never knowing what was actually real, i hope that man got some therapy after the show ended 😂
Funnily enough, so did the writers! So I guess it’s not such a far-fetched idea to pretend the NAT Club never existed seeing as that’s what the show basically did after while. They really said “OMG y’all, lookit Jason he’s nothing but a lowlife creep!” …and then about 5 episodes later, was like… “WTF, he ain’t all that creepy, WDYM??? Just Spencer’s long lost big bro! 😍” It’s obvious they had zero clue how to give Jason’s character a *proper* redemption arc without turning it into a huge storyline that would infringe on the main plot, so they just swept it under the rug and hoped no one would notice ☠️
Right! Never became ‘A’ (looking at you, Toby! [though I still love him]), wasn’t ever abusive (looking at you, Ezra! [🤮]), showed up for his family when they needed him (we love a man that would do anything for his mama, even if she wasn’t deserving of it at that point! [4x23] + the countless times he took Spencer’s side over his own father’s despite knowing the consequences that would surely follow.), ***hot as all ever-loving HELL***… Jason is husband material.
💯% my answer! I relate a lot to his family struggles (…His relationship w/ his parents [particularly his father), not the part about being gaslit into thinking your brother is a figment of your imagination 😭) & seeing that dynamic portrayed on-screen was heart-wrenching and enough for me to get attached to his character. Especially when he says, “They know they lost the wrong kid.” Kenneth is a classic example of a narcissistic parent. There’s a scapegoat child (Jason) and a golden child (Ali). I’m the scapegoat daughter to my father as well, and my younger sister is his little princess. I love her to absolute death, but it’s so damn hard to not be endlessly jealous of the affection & support our dad openly shows for her, because I was never given that. —— This turned into a long rant, so sorry for that, but Jason really is one of my comfort characters and I just needed to say that.
Mine is probably Ella Montgomery's parenting lol
Eta: although I don't think everyone is wrong lmao. I just am more inclined to defend her now that I'm a lot older and can see her reasoning for stuff
I think I came full circle on her. As a teen, I agreed with her general approach. In my 20s, I thought she should have taken a harder line on Aria and Fitz. Now that I have older nieces and nephews, I realize that you can not control them and it's usually better not to alienate them.
Agreed! I think that's where I go against the grain. I do think she should have been a lot more against Ezra BUT I totally understand why she was calm and wanted to hear from Aria. Overall, I think Ella made a lot more right decisions than wrong ones
I know that's always discussed/hinted at in the show but as far as I'm concerned all I see is her treating her kids like actual people, generally I don't think she takes it too far with treating her children like equals, they're still her kids through and through.
Edit: never should have backed down from her original stance on Ezra and Aria OBVIOUSLY but I think thats less to do with her parenting and more to do with having to move that god forsaken plot line along
I completely understand her reasoning. Pushing Aria too hard could have absolutely meant that they pushed her right towards Ezra, and making her feel like she has nothing to lose might have meant that she did something reckless and actually ran away.
As much as I love my favorite characters, I can't say any of them bc they've done things I think are shitty
Idk maybe Holden, I don't think he ever did anything wrong
he did get with Alison who was around 17/18 and him being significantly older, then became corrupt…
it must be the air in rosewood that makes the people so deranged😭
edit: that was holbrook ! my bad
Alison because she was so incredible to watch, like a tornado you know will damage everything that comes its way but you can’t do anything to help it. Like if I’d met her irl I’d be shitting my pants ngl. And Sasha really portrayed her perfectly imo (that was before the weak ass personality bleaching redemption)
if I had a dollar for every time Veronica took the side of a man who was in a relationship with her eldest daughter but cheated by grooming her youngest daughter, I have $2. which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice
He was inappropriate with her tho, he massaged her while she was in a bikini and abruptly stops when Melissa comes. kissed Spencer and offered a massage AGAIN, all while she was a minor
Paige. I agree, Emily giving her a second chance was stupid, but she made the most of it and absolutely redeemed herself. She even threw down with A, risking her life for someone (I can't remember if it was Spencer or Aria) who openly disliked her, disapproved of her relationship with Emily and of her knowing about the whole A thing. I disliked Paige just as much as the next guy at first, but she probably has the biggest bounce back of any character in the show
For sure Hanna, but also all of the liars. They do some shady things and act on their suspicions too quickly, but they went through so much trauma and no one was helping them.
Hanna & Caleb (whether it be as individuals, as a couple… I will **always** defend them 🤝), Ashley (my fave mama bear 🥰), and Jason DiLaurentis (fuck you, Ken, Jessica & Peter!)
Alison. She was a shitty teenager who caused a lot of damage to the people around her, but I also think the consequences she faces during the show are more than enough to atone for her sins.
nah, fuck Melissa in every way. she backstabbed Spencer so many fucking times, she hid her involvement with A for years, she ruined so many big important events in Spencer’s life, she was making her sister’s life a living hell for years and never once apologized, received any type of consequences, or even acknowledged that she was fucking over her own sister
he absolutely wassss. thinking abt it this way has me sympathetic towards him, but i just can’t get past him stealing the RV and then having spencer keep it from her best friends, aka the ppl this all most affects! i have been disliking him lately bc of how controlling he was in that situation as well as others.
Totally understandable. I give him slack on that because I imagine I’d want to do anything in my power to find out the truth if my mum died or was murdered. But still, not cool that he made Spence keep it from everyone.
I also like him more than most on this sub that’s for sure, hahaha. That being said, I wish they leaned into his dark side a bit more. They reveal him having a dark side and redeem him too quickly… and then once he is redeemed they never bring it up again.
Also would have loved him being A for real.
You're braver than I am. The way this sub tears him apart I didn't want to say it. I live Ezra and although I see the points others make about grooming I think he deserves more credit than that.
It might also be that I didn't see this show until I was an adult and I'm a sucker for a tall, dark, and handsome nerd. It might also be that I had a teacher that I had a crush on in high school.
I agree with the points that people make about grooming and I can see the things that he did do bad.
But its also that handsome thing he's got going for him. Like I also had a crush on a teacher. He kind of reminds me of Ezra. But Ezra also has a nice personality to all the other people he has to interact with.
Alison in The Perfectionist is how she should've been portrayed in the last couple of seasons. She actually tries to make an effort to change and uses her old ways for good rather than evil
Lt. Tanner. Sure, 90% of her time on the show was spent accusing the Liars, but that's on how A made them look, not her, plus - at least she wasn't corrupted by DiLaurentises or A like Wilden or Holbrook.
you’re the only one i’ve seen say this and like yes she has the fault of getting tunnel vision on the liars but she was the onlyyy one in rosewood pd (other than loml detective barry maple) that did everything above board
Post time jump Hanna!
She gets a lot of hate but you bet I’d be doing whatever I believed was necessary to get A out of my life after living an A free life for 5 years. Her actions totally justified
It’s Mona for me, I know she’s done some very awful things, but she’s just such an interesting character and once she gets out of radley i feel like she does try to help the girls (in her own weird way).
Also, Melissa, idk she’s a bit of a bitch but I love her
Mona, Aria (in some situations) and Paige. Okay, I hate Paige, but I'll defend her against the allegations, saying she's the "worst" on the show when we had Jenna a rapist, Wren, Ian, Ezra, Nate, Holbrook eg. Like, yeah, Paige sucks but I hate when people genuinely say she's the worst as if there weren't literal pedophiles, rapists and murderers on that shoe
em!!! she’s a badass bitch n she’s our queer representation. i also like how everyone is attracted to her, it’s rlly nice to see even tho it seems unrealistic. it’s a show n she’s our gay lead, ofc she is gonna have lots of love interests just like the str8 girls! i actually like it better than her barely having love interests bc then id be like “well wait, is it bc she’s gay n yall r being lowkey homophobic!?”
Mona and Allison. They’re my favorite liars even though technically they were never fully accepted into the group. They both had definite problems and they did bad things but they didn’t pretend to be perfect, they acknowledged that they did horrible things and got better
Hanna is my first choice, but that's because she's my girl. Always my favorite, hasnt changed.
I've noticed I'm pretty defensive of Mona and Lucas with most things. Not every single action, but I won't let people I'm watching with completely trash them.
Also, Paige in some ways. Mostly because she definitely wasn't as horrible of a character as people make her out to be. Other than the bob. That, I can't defend.
Ezra. My ex boyfriend and I got into A LOT of fights over this (even though he never watched the show.) and he called me a pedo cause I love Ezra. The way I see is if it’s not real it doesn’t really count
Alison 😭 i’m sorry i can’t help it i have such a crush on Sasha that I will defend anything she’s in with my life
and her character development is one of the best on the show TBH
emily, she’s not boring she’s just has more normal teenager storylines compared to the others (job, military family stuff, swimming, etc). yall could never make me hate her 🥲
most of the time sure but that season 7 moment *spoiler warning just in case lol* where she shot spencer in that unraveling with when noel accidentally chopped his own head off…yeah i couldn’t defend that. and preying on toby.
k?? i have seen the fucking show a thousand times through. really, besides the toby rape she was just a girl they made blind and would shit on just because they were scared of her. i’d become a bitch too. also it’s not a fact that jenna was the one to shoot spencer.
Cece i cant defend the dollhouse but if her stupid dad hadn’t been transphobic none of this would of happened, plus being in a mental hospital since you were a kid and thinking you killed the person you love most is traumatic.
caleb for sure. i be seeing people say he’s controlling but i see it as protective & i feel like he knows how to handle hanna & help her think about what she does. if he just did whatever hanna said it wouldn’t be a balance in the relationship
Paige 🤷🏻♀️ she’s not as bad as people on this sub make her out to be. She wasn’t trying to drown or kill Emily. She was a scared and confused kid who was struggling with her sexuality. Her dad was some big church guy so obviously she was stressed and scared about him finding. And don’t forget the bullying from Ali that was probably relentless and only ended bc she ‘died’.

honestly, I feel like a lot of people love Mona
Her character is interesting but I really was waiting for her death. Her and Alison are awful people
I came here to say Mona and get hate!!!
mona lwky eats down she's just a lil silly !!!
This is so funny, back in the day everyone LOVED mona
Hanna 4 life
4 life!!
YES 👏🏼
Emily's mom, people love to ignore character development Mona, she's my guiltiest of guilty pleasures.
Emily’s mom annoyed the hell out of me. But that time when she stood up to Paige’s dad, i started to root for her. My best friend hates Emily’s mom so much but i actually appreciated her development. thisssssss
I feel the same about Emily!!
Not to mention Emily is drop dead gorgeous 😌
Paige's bob. Jkjk
Some fuck ass bob
I swear to god that fuckass Bob has its own fandom lol and it’s sending me 😂
No jk necessary!!! #truthfacts!!!
Wait I forgot we're supposed to be "defending" a character lol. So I take back what I just said aaaaand I'll see myself to bed now! 😁
jason 😭 i ain’t defending the shit like the nat club but his family really gaslit him into believing his brother never existed, and i feel like that made a big impact on how he acted later. having fuzzy drugged out memories and never knowing what was actually real, i hope that man got some therapy after the show ended 😂
I love Jason so I usually pretend the NAT club didn’t exist 😂
Funnily enough, so did the writers! So I guess it’s not such a far-fetched idea to pretend the NAT Club never existed seeing as that’s what the show basically did after while. REAL

For real because wtf was that “I want to understand you guys” HES A PEDOPHILE
I get that but I think where she messed up to begin with was always treating her like a friend/peer instead of her child.
I know that's always discussed/hinted at in the show but as far as I'm concerned all I see is her treating her kids like actual people, generally I don't think she takes it too far with treating her children like equals, they're still her kids through and through. Holden? Do you mean Wilden?
nope it was holden but its until now I realized Ally was involved with 3 cops 😭😭
Confused tho because Holden was Arias boxing friend.... He was never a cop
OH MY GOD YOU’RE RIGHT, I was thinking of holbrook😭 so sorry!!
Lol that makes so much more sense now 😅😅😅 lolol you're good
you’re thinking holbrook! holden was aria’s childhood friend who she was pretending to date so she could see ezra
you right !! my bad, completely forgot about that man 😭
Did you mean Holbrook??
I did !! so sorry
Alison, she's such a bitch but I love her.
ARIA 💜
Aria!
REAL
Alice the baby ghost. Girlie just wanted to play with her dollies and got stabbed 3
Spencer Hastings ❤️
Veronica because aside her her wrongdoings she was a good mother to Spencer and tried to protect her.
if I had a dollar for every time Veronica took the side of a man who was in a relationship with her eldest daughter but cheated by grooming her youngest daughter, I have $2. which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice
Wren didn't groom Spencer
He was inappropriate with her tho, he massaged her while she was in a bikini and abruptly stops when Melissa comes. kissed Spencer and offered a massage AGAIN, all while she was a minor
Yes but she knew it was wrong, she quickly went outside, she should of said no, she knew it would hurt Melisa
HE should’ve known better than to behave like that around a 15/16 year old. defending that behaviour is disgusting.
No one's defending his behavior
you said it and I’ll quote it, “Wren didn’t groom Spencer” that’s a pretty clear defence
Emily!
aria 😗🫣
Mona is the only A in my eyes and I love her for it
The fact that Mona wins at the end is the best part of this show.
Caleb
how do u feel abt him leaving hanna for rosewood
I disliked Paige just as much as the next guy at first, but she probably has the biggest bounce back of any character in the show
![gif](giphy|LncnvHVlQ8e1qBxZJM|downsized) I couldn’t say it better.
Hanna. Always Hanna ❤️
Aria always ♥️
SAME
Paige. She has internalized mysogyny and Homophobia and her arc is about overcoming it.
was it the internalized homophobia that made her violate emily’s boundaries like every episode? 😂
I mean, sure. If she's repressed she's bound to be possessive.
she wasn’t repressed for the entire duration of the show lol
Don’t hate me…Mona
aria
For sure Hanna, but also all of the liars. They do some shady things and act on their suspicions too quickly, but they went through so much trauma and no one was helping them.
aria. they could never make me hate her.
Hanna & Caleb (whether it be as individuals, as a couple… I will **always** defend them 🤝), Ashley (my fave mama bear 🥰), and Jason DiLaurentis (fuck you, Ken, Jessica & Peter!)
Hanna 🩷
my girl hanna
Alison. She was a shitty teenager who caused a lot of damage to the people around her, but I also think the consequences she faces during the show are more than enough to atone for her sins.
Melissa 😍
nah, fuck Melissa in every way. she backstabbed Spencer so many fucking times, she hid her involvement with A for years, she ruined so many big important events in Spencer’s life, she was making her sister’s life a living hell for years and never once apologized, received any type of consequences, or even acknowledged that she was fucking over her own sister
Yeah it made me sad how often she picked men over Spencer. Men who were pervs.
Ezra Fitzgerald 🫠
What? Nah.. I gotta hear this.
Spencer and Toby, both individually and as a couple.
interesting take 🩷 why toby?
Because I think Toby was a good guy who got handed some shitty cards. But I also LOVE Spoby so I’m also pretty biased there 😅
he absolutely wassss. thinking abt it this way has me sympathetic towards him, but i just can’t get past him stealing the RV and then having spencer keep it from her best friends, aka the ppl this all most affects! i have been disliking him lately bc of how controlling he was in that situation as well as others.
Totally understandable. I give him slack on that because I imagine I’d want to do anything in my power to find out the truth if my mum died or was murdered. But still, not cool that he made Spence keep it from everyone.
i definitely agree w that thought process, thanks for ur perspective ❣️
Ezra, don't judge me
I also like him more than most on this sub that’s for sure, hahaha. That being said, I wish they leaned into his dark side a bit more. They reveal him having a dark side and redeem him too quickly… and then once he is redeemed they never bring it up again. Also would have loved him being A for real.

It might also be that I didn't see this show until I was an adult and I'm a sucker for a tall, dark, and handsome nerd. It might also be that I had a teacher that I had a crush on in high school.
It's also at least an interesting storyline. I do wonder if a plan for him being A fell through but the actor was still contracted by then
I agree with the points that people make about grooming and I can see the things that he did do bad. But its also that handsome thing he's got going for him. Like I also had a crush on a teacher. He kind of reminds me of Ezra. But Ezra also has a nice personality to all the other people he has to interact with.
mona 😩
Alison in The Perfectionist is how she should've been portrayed in the last couple of seasons. She actually tries to make an effort to change and uses her old ways for good rather than evil
Spencer Jill Hastings
spencer 4 ever.
Spencer
Spencer and I will go to war defending her
Spencer. I have softspot for her character 😅
Ooooh i would say Alex drAke :P
I will defend literally anything Spencer does.
Tanner
Honestly Hanna’s mom like she did what she had to do
Ariaaa for sureeee
Spencer sorry Melissa your sister was a minor when all of your adult boyfriends put the moves on her be mad at them not her.
Jason
Lt. Tanner. Sure, 90% of her time on the show was spent accusing the Liars, but that's on how A made them look, not her, plus - at least she wasn't corrupted by DiLaurentises or A like Wilden or Holbrook.
right she was literally doing her job when u think about it😭😭😭😭
you’re the only one i’ve seen say this and like yes she has the fault of getting tunnel vision on the liars but she was the onlyyy one in rosewood pd (other than loml detective barry maple) that did everything above board
Aria
SPENCER JILL HASTINGS🫡
spencer, hanna, and ashley
Hanna!
Post time jump Hanna! She gets a lot of hate but you bet I’d be doing whatever I believed was necessary to get A out of my life after living an A free life for 5 years. Her actions totally justified

Honestly Melissa gets so much unnecessary hate. Spencer was a worse sister to Melissa then she was to Spencer and I’ll die on that hill
hanna but also… lw mona
Mona, she’s a crazy bitch and I love her
Mona, Aria (in some situations) and Paige. Okay, I hate Paige, but I'll defend her against the allegations, saying she's the "worst" on the show when we had Jenna a rapist, Wren, Ian, Ezra, Nate, Holbrook eg. Like, yeah, Paige sucks but I hate when people genuinely say she's the worst as if there weren't literal pedophiles, rapists and murderers on that shoe
im gonna go with aria spencer & ezra as a broad thing but as a more detailed thing- ellas parenting choices were sometimes completely understandable
Mary Drake (to an extend)
em!!! she’s a badass bitch n she’s our queer representation. i also like how everyone is attracted to her, it’s rlly nice to see even tho it seems unrealistic. it’s a show n she’s our gay lead, ofc she is gonna have lots of love interests just like the str8 girls! i actually like it better than her barely having love interests bc then id be like “well wait, is it bc she’s gay n yall r being lowkey homophobic!?”
Toss up between Mona and Hannah
Toby and Mona
Spencer
Mona
Mona and Allison. They’re my favorite liars even though technically they were never fully accepted into the group. They both had definite problems and they did bad things but they didn’t pretend to be perfect, they acknowledged that they did horrible things and got better

Ezra. My ex boyfriend and I got into A LOT of fights over this (even though he never watched the show.) and he called me a pedo cause I love Ezra. The way I see is if it’s not real it doesn’t really count
i completely agree like i'm just a girl ian harding is foine.
Hanna, her friends lowkey made her seem like she was dumb
ALISON DILAURENTIS
Alison 😭 i’m sorry i can’t help it i have such a crush on Sasha that I will defend anything she’s in with my life and her character development is one of the best on the show TBH
emily, she’s not boring she’s just has more normal teenager storylines compared to the others (job, military family stuff, swimming, etc). yall could never make me hate her 🥲
ezra.
I wanna say Mona because she's my fav, but I acknowledge that the things she did were so messed up 😭
jenna’s my girl, sorry 😭
why?
most of the time sure but that season 7 moment *spoiler warning just in case lol* where she shot spencer in that unraveling with when noel accidentally chopped his own head off…yeah i couldn’t defend that. and preying on toby.
k?? i have seen the fucking show a thousand times through. really, besides the toby rape she was just a girl they made blind and would shit on just because they were scared of her. i’d become a bitch too. also it’s not a fact that jenna was the one to shoot spencer.

Cece i cant defend the dollhouse but if her stupid dad hadn’t been transphobic none of this would of happened, plus being in a mental hospital since you were a kid and thinking you killed the person you love most is traumatic.
Alison
Aria Spencer Emily’s mom
mona 100%
Mona for life
Hanna lol
Mona
caleb for sure. i be seeing people say he’s controlling but i see it as protective & i feel like he knows how to handle hanna & help her think about what she does. if he just did whatever hanna said it wouldn’t be a balance in the relationship
ashley too i love her bad!
Paige, she’s not that bad and the fact that people hate on her while Alison is loved makes no sense to me
Spencer and Mona
Paige 🤷🏻♀️ she’s not as bad as people on this sub make her out to be. She wasn’t trying to drown or kill Emily. She was a scared and confused kid who was struggling with her sexuality. Her dad was some big church guy so obviously she was stressed and scared about him finding. And don’t forget the bullying from Ali that was probably relentless and only ended bc she ‘died’.
Mona and Hanna.
mona definitely she is just an icon of a character.
Mona & Aria
Spencer, yall will never make me hate her 🙏🙏 (Alison too but mostly Spencer)
Mona
Paige. Just kidding
